Foundation Focus
I often hear about how the Human Capital programs help our grantees make connections that propel their careers. These uplifting stories make my dayand the latest one is no exception. Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program (AFMDP) alumnus Gary Gibbons, MD, (88) has been selected to serve as director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), starting this summer. After the announcement, Gibbons wrote a heartfelt email thanking his Harold Amos colleagues and mentors. I am deeply indebted to RWJF, the visionary leadership of the AFMDP and my AFMDP peers for providing the inspiration, empowering self-belief, and nurturing social network platform that helped make this moment possible, Gibbons wrote. I am eternally grateful for the formative, indelible experience that this fellowship provided me at a critical juncture of my career development. He added that he hopes to repay this priceless gift by passing the blessing on to the next cohort of scholars. Gibbons heads to the NIH from the Morehouse School of Medicine, where he was founder and director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, an NIH-funded Research Center of Excellence. Remarkably, Gibbons selection as an NIH director brings to three the number of Harold Amos alumni who lead NIH institutes. He joins Griffin Rodgers, MD, MACP, (83) Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; and Roderic Pettigrew, MD, PhD, (83) Director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The accomplishments of Gibbons, Rodgers, and Pettigrew embody RWJFs commitment to developing a new generation of leaders

Research Roundup
Clinical Scholars The Laryngoscope, a premier journal in Ear, Nose, and Throat specialty, published a study (May 2, 2012) by VA Scholar Gordon Sun, MD, (11) showing that the current evidence does not support olfactory/smell tests to diagnose Alzheimers. Although this is a relatively new approachless than 3 decades oldand the research is not conclusive, some individuals and websites are promoting smell tests alone as predictors for Alzheimers disease. The authors, who include VA Scholar James Burke, MD, (10) argue that based on the current evidence, the commercialization and promotion of this diagnostic tool is dangerously premature. The study received media coverage in WebMD, Medical News Today, Health Day, and others. Read More Research Roundup
