9 BOOTSTRAP SWEEP CIRCUIT Aim:-To design a transistor bootstrap ramp generator to provide output amplitude of 8V over a time period of 1ms. The ramp is to be triggered by a negative going pulse with amplitude of 3v, a pulse width of 1ms, and a time interval between pulses of 1ms. The load resistor to be supplied has a value of 1K and the ramp is to be linear within 2%. The supply voltage is to be 15V. Take hFE (min) = 100. Components and equipments:- Resistors, Capacitors, Transistors, Diode, Function Generator, CRO, Groove board, Clips and BNC cables. Circuit Diagram:V C C D1 R1 C 2 RB Q1 C1 C 3

Ib2 = 0.23mA- 0.15mA = 80A Allow 1% nonlinearity due to Ib2 (i.e., Ib2 represents a loss charging current to C1) I1 =100 * Ib2 = 100x80A = mA C1 = I1t/ v = I1* (ramp time)/Vp = 8mAx1mA/8V =1F. VR1 = Vcc-Vd1- Vcesat =14.1V R1 = VR1/I1 = 1.76K (Use 1.8K standard Value) For 1% nonlinearity due to C3 discharge Vc3 =1% of initial Vc3 level Vc3 = Vcc = 15V Vc3 = 15V/100 = 0.15V C3 discharge current is equal to I1 = 8mA Thus C3 = I1t/Vc3 = 8mAx1mA/0.15V = 53F (Use 56 f ) Input and Output waveforms:1) When Tg =Ts

2) When Tg > Ts Vi 0 -V Vo Vcc t Vcesat- VBE2 Ts Tg Procedure: Construct the simple ramp generator circuit. Apply a negative going 3V, 1ms pulse input with a space width of 0.1ms. Monitor the input and output waveforms on an oscilloscope. Sketch the waveforms showing their time relationship and record their amplitudes and time durations. Halve the resistance of R1 by paralleling it with another 2.2K resistor. Note the effect on the output waveform. Alter the circuit to a bootstrap ramp generator as in figure9.1. Repeat procedures 2 and 3. t

Analysis: Compare the performance of the simple ramp generator with the performance designed for in example1 (Class Notes). Analyze the circuit with the reduced R1 value and compare with the results in procedure 4. Compare the performance of the bootstrap sweep circuit with the performance designed for in example2.
