Hospital selected for national program
BY KRISTINA SCALA
The Washington Twp. Sun
Kennedy University Hospital
in Washington Township was re-
cently selected to be a part of
Best Fed Beginnings. It is the
only hospital in South Jersey to
be selected for this program.
Best Fed Beginnings is a pro-
gram initiated by the National
Initiative for Childrens Health-
care Quality (NICHQ) where 90
hospitals were selected out of 233
hospitals nationally. The pro-
gram is 22 months long, consist-
ing of learning sessions and
meetings.
Kennedy is already two
months into the program and has
another 20 months to go.
At the end of the program,
each enrolled hospital must go
through a review process, mak-
ing sure the hospital can follow
the 10 Steps to Successful Breast-
feeding. These steps will qualify
Kennedy as a baby-friendly
hospital.
Deb Schoy, nurse manager and
Outpatient Womens & Childrens
Services manager, mentioned
how the efforts to encourage
breastfeeding started before they
sent out the application.
We have already done a con-
siderable amount of training for
the staff, Schoy said.
The hospitals acceptance came
just in time to help celebrate
World Breastfeeding Week a
global celebration to help pro-
mote and support breastfeeding.
Kennedy Lactation Consultant
Joanne Naughton, RN, CCE,
IBCLC, mentioned how impor-
tant it is for mothers to know the
benefits of breastfeeding.
Early exclusive breastfeeding
with the introduction of appro-
priate complementary feeding
around six months of age and
continued breastfeeding for the
first year of life ensures that
both mothers and infants receive

Hospital offers
lactation support
the maximum health benefits of
breastfeeding, Naughton said in
a news release.
According to Womens Health,
the benefits of breastfeeding
helps fight against asthma, obesi-
ty and type 2 diabetes. For a
mothers health, it can lower
risks for breast cancer, ovarian
cancer and postpartum depres-
sion.
To ensure that every patient at
Kennedy University is well pre-
pared and informed regarding
breastfeeding, Womens and Chil-
drens services has lactation sup-
port and educational programs
before, during and after child-
birth.
Schoy and Cusick expressed
their excitement for the hospi-
tals selection into the program.
Once we achieve [the baby-
friendly verification] we will
have to maintain it and continue
to meet baby-friendly standards,
Cusick said.

Student places third
in national contest
Washington Township high
school 2012 graduate Kirk Butler
recently was named one of 10 na-
tional third-place winners in the
Fountainhead Essay Contest,
sponsored by the Ayn Rand Insti-
tute. For his efforts, Butler, who
competed against more than 4,000
entrants nationwide, receives a
$1,000 award.
Butler had to pick between
three topics for his essay, based on
Rands novel, The Fountain-
head. Essays were judged on
both style and content, with
judges looking for writing that
was clear, articulate and logically
organized. Winning essays
demonstrated an outstanding
grasp of the philosophic meaning
of The Fountainhead, the Rand
Institute mem-
bers said.
Essay sub-
missions were
evaluated in a
four round
judging
process.
Judges were
selected by the
Ayn Rand In-
stitute based
on a demon-
strated knowledge and under-
standing of Rands works. One
grand prize winner received a
$10,000 award, and five second-
place winners received $2,000.
Forty-five finalists picked up $100
awards, while 175 semifinals re-
ceived $50.

I
ts hard to believe, but a new school
year is almost upon us. In a few
short weeks, schools open.
But what will be different about this
school year?
Were going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about the
new school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
If your school district switched its
annual election to November, well ask
if there will be any noticeable impact
on the schools.
Generally, well be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you parents, taxpayers and students
need to know before the 2012-13 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions youd like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your
childs school.
Wed love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.
So send us your questions. Well do
our best to get answers.
in our opinion
Ready for school?
Its August, so school doors open in only a few weeks
Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders to
ask them questions about the upcom-
ing school year. So whats on your
mind? Send us your questions, and
well do our best to get answers.
BOE votes against substitute outsourcing
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Washington Twp. Sun
An adjustment to the substitute-teach-
ing program was put to rest after the Wash-
ington Township Board of Education did
not renew its contract with Source4Teach-
ers a substitute outsourcing company
during a meeting July 23.
The council voted 4-3 against the con-
tract renewal and continued the meeting
with a discussion regarding the issues
with both the past substitute hiring pro-
gram and Source4Teachers. Board mem-
bers Ginny Murphy, Andrew Walter and
Paul Marino voted in favor of renewing the
contract, while Chet Nawoyski, Eileen Ab-
bott, Josh Aronovitch and Jim Murphy
voted against it. President Steve Altamuro
was not present for the vote, but appeared
later during the meeting.
Board member Andrew Walter said that
the issue was with the simple mathemat-
ics.
Walter believed that the issue is that the
district continues to pay double than
what the surrounding districts are paying
for substitute outsourcing. He said the ad-
ministration found a way to make the pro-
gram fail and he recommends the rate
should be between $120 and $125 per day.
The rate for long-term substitutes
ranged between $150 and $225 per day, de-
pending on the need for the substitute.
Its ridiculous that the administration
would take down a program that will save
thousands of dollars, Walter said after the
meeting.
Whats getting lost in all of this is that
we have an administration that knew what
the old rate was and recommended a rate
double that, Walter said.
Superintendent Bob Goldschmidt said
the administration was not ignoring the
issues with the program nor was the ad-
ministration setting up the program to fail.
He expressed his disappointment in the
failure of the program.
I have been very interested in seeing
this program succeed, Goldschmidt said.
Many district teachers and residents in
the audience displayed a sign of relief that
the program will no longer be used. How-
ever, many had concerns with not only the
new system Source4Teachers but also
the system that was used before the district
agreed to hire an outsourcing company.
Before Source4Teachers, the district
used an in-house system in which it ap-
proved the names of substitute aids and
teaching assistants. An individual was re-
sponsible for making phone calls to appro-
priate subs.
Walter argued that the old system had

Board has 30 days to find
solution in hiring substitutes
just as many problems as the new
system, with the same number of
complaints arising about cor-
ruption in the system.
Eileen Wallace has been substi-
tuting for Washington Township
schools for a number of years.
She expressed her concern about
the program.
Since the Source4Teachers pro-
gram requires substitutes to have
access to computers, Wallace ex-
pressed her disappointment with
the methods of the program. Wal-
lace said that the only way she
could accept a job is if she had ac-
cess to a computer. Considering
she spent most of her time taking
care of her mother in the hospi-
tal, she did not have access to a
computer.
I was insulted that I was con-
sidered I was a part of a corrupt
situation. I work hard. It brought
tears to my eyes because you
dont know the mechanics of the
system, Wallace said.
Altamuro, who appeared after
the vote to deny the contract re-
newal, said that the board is
going back in time, and if the
surrounding towns are saving
money by using this program
Washington Township should be
able to save money as well. Alta-
muro blamed himself just as
much as other council members
regarding a change to have a
more cost-effective improvement
when hiring substitutes.
Only Washington Township
cant get it together and save
$300,000, Altamuro said.
The council has approximately
30 days to find another solution in
hiring substitutes. Goldschmidt
stressed that the issue and resolu-
tion is much larger and more
complicated than people realize.
We have a huge task ahead as
a district to try to redo our sys-
tem, Goldschmidt said.
