Oh Heck! This is a nasty one.

This little birdy can be a truly troublesome little problem to solve.

The 0x00000024 or 0x24 error message will appear when there is a problem with NTFS.sys file.
The NTSF.sys file only happens to be the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS
drives. YOUR HARDDRIVE!!!
The error message occurs when Windows XP encounters an unrecoverable error when it tries to access
an NTFS partition or a volume on the hard disk. Typically, you receive a Stop: 0x00000024 error
message during Windows XP Setup when one or more of the following conditions are true:

• The file system or partition structure is corrupted. (Oops. That's not good.)
• A driver compatibility issue exists. For example, the file system driver for an antivirus program
or for other utility can cause this issue. (A lot better than the first.)

This error is a real kick in the teeth. A real little devil.

It can be a real nightmare to solve, because it can be due to...
Disk Corruption. (can you hear the dramatic music)

So how on earth are we to solve this sucker?

Corruption in the NTFS file system or bad blocks (sectors) on your hard disk can cause this error.
You may have corrupted SCSI and EIDE driver/s which will affect your systems ability to read and
write to your hard disk, causing the error.
If you are using SCSI, then right click My Computer and click Manage.

Once the Computer Management screen come up look for Event Viewer, System.

Check Event Viewer for error messages from SCSI and FASTFAT (System Log) or Autochk
(Application Log). These may help you pinpoint the device or driver that is causing the error. But that
is if you can get your system booted and to this stage.

If you can get here then try disabling any virus scanners, backup programs, or disk defragmenter tools
that continually monitor your system. I good thing to do is run a hardware diagnostic tool supplied by
your system manufacturer. You should find from your owners manual how to use the tools for your
computer.
Another piece of advice is run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and resolve any file system structural corruption.
Do this on a regular basis as well. You will have to restart your system before the disk scan begins on a
system partition. If you cannot start the system due to the error, use the Recovery Console and run
Chkdsk /r. For more information about the Recovery Console, see Recovery Console tutorial.

*WARNING *
Make sure your Hard drives have been formated with either FAT32 or preferably NTFS. If your drives
should happen to be formatted with FAT16, then the long filenames used by windows can be damaged
if Scandisk or another MS-DOS hard disk tool used to verify the integrity the of your hard drives from
an MS-DOD prompt. Always use Windows 2000 Chkdsk on Windows 2000 and Windows XP Chkdsk
on Windows XP.

Make sure you are up to date with service packs and any other Microsoft update. These can and will
prevent any future misfortune that may come your systems way.
Simply – Keep Your System Up To Date.
To check if your system is up to date then do this.
Click in START, RUN and type Winver and then press Enter or click OK.
Your will see this or something like this.

This will tell you if you have the latest service pack installed.
Occasionally, remedies to specific problems are developed after the release of a Service Pack. These
remedies are called hotfixes. Microsoft does not recommend that you install a post–Service Pack hotfix
unless the specific problem it addresses has been encountered. Service Packs include all of the hotfixes
released since the release of the previous Service Pack.

Solutions if you cannot get into your system.

Solution 1
Insert your Windows XP CD and get into Console Recovery. Run Chkdsk.
Please read the tutorial called Console Recovery for a detail explanation of what it can do for you.

Solution 2 (It may seem long winded but it could help you.)
If you do not have the Windows XP discs then:
Make sure everything is switched off. Your computer system switched off. Physically take out your
hard disk that has Windows XP installed on it and attach it to a second desktop (make sure it is a slave
by altering the jumper settings in the back. Look at the hard disks instructions on how to do this.)
If you don't have a second desktop take it to a friend who has a desktop and attach it to theirs.
When you have attached it, then run Chkdsk on that drive. Use these commands.
Chkdsk /p (performs an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors.) /r (Locates bad sectors
and recovers readable information.)

Example: chkdsk c: /p /r
The C: is the C drive that Windows XP is installed on.

If you can get into your system then get into a DOS prompt and run the same chkdsk command.

This hopefully will help you to recover a failing system. The other alternative is to do a complete
reinstall of the operating system. My advice if you are to do this is to strip your system down to a bare
bones system so that you will have a running Windows XP system without all the bells and whistles.
After everything is smoothly working, then start to add all your NASA instrumentation to your System.

Like I said at the beginning, the 0x00000024 error is a real pain in the rear end and can make you pull
your hair out.

Enjoy!
