Clean Energy Activities

In 2011, the Board of Directors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a total of $2.1 billion new clean energy investmentsa 21.5% increase from that of 2010. Furthermore, the total disbursement under ADBs clean energy projects, financed by ADBs ordinary capital resources, has reached about $1.4 billion in 2011. Asias energy needs are expected to double by 2030, presenting major supply and energy security challenges. In addition, there are still nearly 700 million Asians with no access to electricity, and this lack of energy constrains human development. ADB Clean Energy Program in 2012 will continue its efforts to mitigate climate change through expansion of its clean energy portfolio. Therefore, ADBs major interventions in the energy sector of its developing member countries will continue to be investment support for conventional power supply projects using advanced technologies, renewable energy (such as solar, wind, and hydro), plus energy efficiency in the end-use sector. The Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) 2012, themed Accelerating Low-Carbon Energy For All, took place from 4 June to 8 June 2012 in ADB headquarters, Manila, Philippines. About 800 participants from more than 55 countries, representing governments, financial institutions, civil society, academia, international organizations, and the private sector, gathered in plenaries, parallel sessions, and side events. During the forum, ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda called for more resources to be devoted to green growth, the scaling-up of demand-side energy efficiency investment, and the use of clean energy technology to provide access to energy for the poor. ADB has issued about $600 million of clean energy bonds to date. Proceeds raised through the clean energy bonds will be used to finance a pool of projects related to the clean energy field in Asia and the Pacific.

Shandong Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction Project Project Life: 20 years Total Loan Package: $100 million
PROJECT SUMMARY The Shandong Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction project aims to finance the reduction of energy intensity and emissions from energy-intensive industries in Shandong Province through a financial intermediation loan. The project aims to promote energy efficiency and emission reduction measures in the provinces industry sector, develop energy service companies, and enhance institutional capacity to identify and manage energy efficiency and emission reduction projects.

Gujarat Solar Power Transmission Project Project Life: 40 years Total Loan Package: $100 million
PROJECT SUMMARY The Gujarat Solar Power Transmission project will develop the transmission infrastructure for evacuation of power in a reliable manner from the solar power generation plants to be located in the 2,500-hectare Charanka solar park in the Patan District of Gujarat. The solar park will site more than 500 megawatts of both solar photovoltaic and concentrated solar power plants. Through the development of the power evacuation line from the solar park, ADB will facilitate private sector participation and develop a model that can be replicated to significantly scale up solar power in India.

Our VisionAn Asia and Pacific Free of Poverty

ADBs vision is an Asia and Pacific region free of poverty. Its mission is to help its developing member countries reduce poverty and improve the quality of life of their people. Despite the regions many successes, it remains home to two-thirds of the worlds poor: 1.8 billion people who live on less than $2 a day, with 903 million struggling on less than $1.25 a day. ADB is committed to reducing poverty through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth, and regional integration. Based in Manila, ADB is owned by 67 members, including 48 from the region. Its main instruments for helping its developing member countries are policy dialogue, loans, equity investments, guarantees, grants, and technical assistance.
