The start of the school year brings a busy time for many of us, between managing fall programs

and transitioning into a new school year with children. I challenge you to try to find time for yourself to reflect and rejuvenate. As the old adage goes, our cup must be full for us to best give of ourselves to others. A few reminders as we enter this demanding time of year, for us and for the young people that matter so much in our lives: Be sure of good physical and mental health o Schedule check-ups and address potential problems in a timely manner Register for extracurricular activities o Choose quality over quantity Re-establish routines o Morning routine, dinner time, bedtime Integrate healthy food whenever possible o Calcium, found in low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese and spinach, helps form bone mass o Protein, found in chicken , fish, lean meats, and beans, helps form muscle cells o Iron, found in fortified breakfast cereal, beans, tomatoes, and leafy greens, helps replace blood cells and capitalize on muscle and bone growth

Starting Hearts is an independent nonprofit founded in 2010 by sudden cardiac arrest survivor Lynn Blake. At the age of 27, Lynn became one of the fortunate few to actually survive this typically tragic event and three years later she was inspired to set out on a mission to save others and established Starting Hearts. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is our nation's leading killer. It affects an estimated 325,000 people every year and more than 92% will NOT survive. During 2011, 250 individuals in Eagle County experienced cardiac related emergencies. The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that 1-2 in every 1,000 people will suffer a SCA each year. According to these calculations, more than 50 Eagle County residents and hundreds of visitors will experience a SCA this year and most will not survive. Starting Hearts was established to address the astonishingly high number of people that unnecessarily lose their lives to this largely preventable cause of death. To accomplish this mission, Starting Hearts seeks to motivate individuals, organization and communities to take action and to help save the life of SCA victims in Eagle County through free cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) outreach, education and access programs.
