Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are
subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as
necessary. It is important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest
edition, and any amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australian Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The
Australian Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications,
new editions and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head office of Standards
Australia, are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard
should be made without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 97477.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee MN/6, Ferroalloys to
provide specifications for ferrosilicomanganese.
In preparing this Standard, reference was made to the following international Standards:
ISO 5447:1980 Ferrosilicomanganese — Specification and conditions of delivery
ASTM A922-93 Specification for Silicon Metal
JIS G 2304-1986 Silicon-manganese
ISO 5447 is a very general document having limited commercial application to the
Australian industry. The following particular points are of relevance:
(a) Chemical analysis for the major elements, in this case manganese and silicon, must

comply with specified concentration ranges. Material that does not fall within these
concentration ranges warrants a complaint. The ISO standard refers only to nominal
target concentrations.
(b) Many clauses of ISO 5447 make mention of agreements between the parties
concerned. Such statements in relation to the specifications render the document
unacceptable as an Australian Standard.
(c) The general terminology in ISO 5447 is unacceptable. Terms such as preferably;
other methods; may be used; may be agreed detract from the reasons for preparing
specifications.
The objective of this Standard is to prepare an appropriate Australian document which
clearly defines specifications and test methods to be used and reflects the real needs of
producers, traders and customers in the ferroalloys industry of Australia.

Standards Australia will permit up to 10 percent of the technical content pages of a Standard to be copied for use
exclusively in-house by purchasers of the Standard without payment of a royalty or advice to Standards Australia.
Standards Australia will also permit the inclusion of its copyright material in computer software programs for no royalty
payment provided such programs are used exclusively in-house by the creators of the programs.
Care should be taken to ensure that material used is from the current edition of the Standard and that it is updated whenever the
Standard is amended or revised. The number and date of the Standard should therefore be clearly identified.
The use of material in print form or in computer software programs to be used commercially, with or without payment, or in
commercial contracts is subject to the payment of a royalty. This policy may be varied by Standards Australia at any time.

Ferroalloys — Specifications

Part 4: Ferrosilicomanganese

1 SCOPE This Standard relates to the principal grade of ferrosilicomanganese

currently used in Australia, as shown in Table 1. The Standard specifies the key technical
and commercial requirements for the supply of this product.
Sampling methods for ferroalloys, precision and bias in relation to sampling of
ferroalloys, and methods of chemical analysis for selected ferroalloys, including

3 DEFINITIONS For the purposes of this Standard, the definitions below apply.
3.1 Customer —any party that purchases ferrosilicomanganese.
3.2 Ferrosilicomanganese — an alloy consisting mainly of silicon, manganese and iron,
produced by reduction smelting of silicon, manganese and iron-bearing ores and slags, and
used mainly in the manufacture of iron and steel.
3.3 Producer — any party that operates a process to produce ferrosilicomanganese for
sale to other parties.
3.4 Supplier — any party that sells ferrosilicomanganese.

4 CONSTITUTION OF CONSIGNMENTS Ferrosilicomanganese shall be supplied in

consignments constituted by the graded lot method.
A consignment constituted by this method consists of a number of melts, or mixed parts
of a number of melts, of ferrosilicomanganese of a single grade.
