The Voorhees Sun
Volunteers from the Animal Orphanage in
Voorhees returned from a 3-day journey of a
lifetime to Texas on Thursday, May 26. The ar-
rival home was a relief; the four dogs they res-
cued were safely back where they belong and a
welcome home party set up for their return.
Milky, Chaz, Theodore and Gina returned
home after they were sent to the Spindletop
Rescue facility in Texas.
According to Shelter Director Christine
Todd, the Animal Orphanage had sent the four
pit bulls there earlier because the facility and
its owner were highly regarded in pit-bull be-
havioral techniques and knowledge.
This place is the last resort for animals with
behavioral issues, Todd said.
Spindletop is a well-known rescue group in
Willis, Texas. However, Texas law enforcement,
due to alleged negligence, recently seized ap-
proximately 300 dogs from the property, accord-
ing to Todd.
Still shocked by the outcome of the situation,
Todd explained that the condition of the Ani-
mal Orphanages dogs does not compare to the

The Camden County Depart-
ment of Public Works held a
meeting Tuesday, July 31, to dis-
cuss the reconstruction of Had-
donfield-Berlin Road (Rt. 561).
Its important for Camden
County to make necessary im-
provements and invest into our
infrastructure, said Freeholder
Ian Leonard, liaison to the De-
partment of Public works in a
news release.
The construction was set to
begin Aug. 6 and take approxi-
mately 12 weeks, according to a
news release.
Underground pipework, curb
work and milling and repaving
will take place from the Voorhees
gas station to the Voorhees-Cher-
ry Hill border at Evesham Rd.
New traffic signs will be added
and traffic-monitoring cameras
are going to be installed at the in-
tersections of White Horse Rd.,
Voorhees Drive, and Laurel Oak
Rd.
In addition to the construction
on Rt. 561, an eroded pipe is set
for repair on White Horse Rd. A
creek runs perpendicular under a
portion of the White Horse Rd.
The construction will take
place Mon. to Fri from 7 a.m. to
3:30 p.m. Paving to the road will
be done at night.
Delays are expected, but the
road will still be passable unless
the roads need to be closed.
Township officials said the
roads should only be closed on an
as-needed basis. Otherwise, one
lane should be open for cars to
pass through.

other dogs that were seized from
Spindletop.
Gina, 5-year-old pit bull, was in
the best condition out of the four
dogs. Gina was sent to Spindletop
in Nov. 2011 and supposedly was
adopted in July 2011. Todd was
surprised to hear that Gina was
still at Spindletop.
Gina was under weight with an
ear infection, while the other
dogs are still in quarantine.
Todd said that the dogs are
going to be separated from the
other dogs until they can get back
into the swing of shelter life.
Some dogs were damaged
prior to us sending them, and
they are still not right, Todd
said.
Luckily, Gina passed her be-
havioral examination Monday
July 30, and is adoptable to fami-
lies with children over the age of
10.
She runs two miles with her
running partner and volunteer,
Tony Todd, practically everyday.
She is a great running part-
ner, Todd said.
The Animal Orphanage is a no-
kill shelter. Posted on a sign as
you enter the Animal Orphanage
is Every dog has its day.
Todd explained that, along
with many of the staff members,
she believes that the dogs they
sent to the Spindletop Refuge, as
well as all the animals in the shel-
ter, deserve a chance.
Volunteers Mike Hoffman and
Joanne Collier tagged along for
the 3-day drive to recover the
dogs.
We dont send [the dogs] out of
space, said Hoffman. We send
them out of compassion.
Both Hoffman and Collier took
the 26 hours worth of driving to
Texas as a mission.
Collier said that those dogs
needed to be returned, and it was
their responsibility to make sure
they are well taken care of.
According to Todd, Mont-
gomery County Animal Control,
Humane Society of the United
States, the Animal Farm Founda-
tion and the law officials collabo-
rated beautifully with the Or-
phanage volunteers to make sure
all the dogs returned safely.
Unfortunately, many dogs are
still waiting to be relocated. A
Facebook page was created to
make sure all the dogs are safely
recovered.

Mt. Laurel resident Alene
Brennans focus in the health-
care field began at an early age
when she became plagued with
unbearable migraines.
They were so severe when I
was younger, the 32-year-old
said. I needed something to help
me get out of that cycle of mi-
graines.
After locating foods that trig-
gered her migraines, such as
chocolate, and cutting them from
her diet, she noticed a dramatic
change.
It piqued my interest in the
power of food, she said. If food
can have that much of an impact
on how I feelwhat else can food
do?
Brennan is now a certified
health coach and yoga instructor
who hosts events primarily in
Voorhees to help area residents
improve their livelihoods.

events on natural remedies to

This year, N.J. celebrates the 25th An-
niversary of the states milestone Manda-
tory Recycling Act. Recycling has become
second nature to many N.J. residents and
businesses. Containers bearing the famil-
iar recycling logo filled with bottles and
cans, and bundles of magazines, newspa-
pers and cardboard, placed at curbsides in
neighborhoods across the state are part of
the Jersey landscape.
Residents in large numbers have em-
braced recycling for its environmental ben-
efits. In 2010, N.J. saw an encouraging in-
crease in recycling rate (recyclables that
are not trashed or burned) up from 37
percent in 2009 to 40 percent for municipal
solid waste. But there is still plenty of
room for improvement.
To date, a third of New Jerseys munici-
palities recycle less than 25 percent of their
municipal trash. Only 16 percent have
reached the mandatory 50 percent recy-
cling rate. Running an effective recycling
program has a cost for municipalities, in-
cluding recycling
infrastructure, per-
sonnel, training,
and recycling col-
lections. However,
the economics of
recycling versus
disposal demon-
strates that recy-
cling provides a net
economic benefit to
cities and towns
that are diligent
about recycling.
In Voorhees, we
are proud of our
recycling efforts.
In 2011, our com-
munity recycled 65 percent of our munici-
pal waste. The 17 tons we recycled saved
our township $900,000 in disposal fees.
The township has adopted single stream
recycling where paper, cardboard, bottles,
cans and plastics are placed together in the
township supplied recycling container. We
recycle plastic containers with numbers 1,
2, 4, 5 and 7. Look for those numbers inside
the triangle recycling logo.
There is no question that recycling pro-
tects our environment while saving money.
Farmers market
The Voorhees Town Center Farmers
Market will be held every Saturday

honey, wine and much more from vendors
throughout the Delaware Valley.

MAYORS MESSAGE
N
ew Jersey does solar power.
Does it well. Does it too well,
as it turns out.
According to the governors office,
the state installed more solar capacity
in the first quarter of 2012 than any
other state and led the nation in solar
installations on commercial and indus-
trial properties in 2011.
Now, thats a source of pride. Being a
national leader in something other
than reality television shows is a good
thing.
But, as it turns out, you can have too
much of a good thing.
The supply of solar power has now
surpassed the demand, bringing the
market crashing down. And when the
market crashes, solar projects in the
construction phase can stop. Jobs can
be lost. The momentum of the solar in-
dustry can come to a halt.
The measure signed by Gov.
Christie, which had bipartisan sup-
port, aims to boost the market by re-
quiring power companies to purchase
more solar power. In other words, the
state is trying to increase the demand,
hoping that, eventually, it catches up to
the supply, thereby giving those in the
business of building solar projects a
reason to keep doing what theyre
doing.
We think the bill certainly cant
hurt, given the current market situa-
tion, but we also agree with experts
who think more might need to be done.
In a statement, the Mid-Atlantic
Solar Energy Industries Association
points out that the measure doesnt do
enough to prevent a recurrence of the
over-supply situation. It proposes con-
trolling the pace of solar project pro-
duction.
It might be a bit premature to take
that step, but, as the state has seen, this
is a market that, left to its own, can run
itself into the ground fairly quickly.
Give the new measure time to work.
See if the demand can catch up to the
supply. But be ready to step in if it be-
comes clear that more steps are needed
to avoid another crash.
in our opinion
Solar solution
Recent action will help the market, at least in the short term
A super-solar state
New Jersey is a national leader when it
comes to producing solar power. Oddly,
that is now a bad thing. Supply exceeds
demand, and the market has crashed.
A measure signed last month will help
to correct that.

Health coaching and yoga
have been my overall approach to
wellness, she explained. You
find there are so many ways to
connect with people through ei-
ther food or yoga.
Brennan looks for a diet that
works well and makes the sub-
jects feel good at the same time.
She begins by identifying the
foods the person currently con-
sumes and then sees which foods
can be easily canceled out of their
diets and what they will need
some help with.
Its not about stripping some-
bodys diet of all the foods that
they love, she said.
In the case of migraines,
chocolate, caffeine, nuts, artificial
sweeteners, candy, gum, soda,
processed meats and red wine can
all potentially be triggers to the
pain.
Once realizing that chocolate
was one of her triggers, she devel-
oped a taste aversion for it.
I dont even crave it at all, she
said. I have that association of
what chocolate does to me.
There are other foods that I
enjoy instead of chocolate.
For some people, food is the
secondary issue.
Many people, she said, overeat
from the stress of a job or rela-
tionship.
It doesnt matter if youre eat-
ing carrots or if youre eating
chips, she said. Neither is get-
ting to the root of the real issue.
Health coaching, therefore, cre-
ates a complete program to ad-
dress all issues.
Sometimes I describe it as life
coaching with a twist on food,
she said. So often, when there
are issues around food, it doesnt
really have to do with the food.
Brennans tagline is, What
nourishes you?
Shes not out to persuade any-
one to follow a program, she said,
but is a resource for people who
are looking to live a happier,
healthier life.
Many people find her through
her online presence or the work-
shops she hosts.
A lot of people will attend a
workshop and understand my ap-
proach and understand how a
health coach can benefit them,
she said.
Others, she said, sign up for a
breakthrough session.
According to her website, a
breakthrough session is a 50-
minute confidential conversation,
available either online or in per-
son, that is used to identify life
and health goals, long-term goals
and to learn how she can help in
the process.
Brennan has taken a particular
interest in pelvic floor pain, a con-
dition that affects many women.
The pelvic floor is a group of
muscles at the pelvic base, she
said, that is similar to a ham-
mock.
Its great when it works fine,
she said, but over time, due to
trauma, childbirth, surgery,
abuse, or even poor posture, the
muscles can weaken, causing
symptoms such as painful inter-
course and frequent urination.
They can find relief, she said.
I introduce a form of healing
through yoga.
She works with the women in
the workshop through breathing
techniques and yoga postures to
strengthen the muscles.
She began her interest in yoga
due to her migraine pain as well,
she said.
Though she was skeptical
when she first heard that yoga
could help with her migraines,
she decided to give it a try any-
way.
When its your health, why
wouldnt you? she asked.
