is teetering on the brink of collapse and what is at stake is our future. Period! The distrust of the government has made people in Lowndes County nervous and suspicious of our leaders. Not a day passes that story ideas are not sent to our publication or passed on by word of mouth. Some are true, some are false most lay somewhere in between. But the end result is all the same: citizens feeling that their local government is out of control. Over the past several weeks, The Real Story has been approached about concerns over hospital/police security during a high-stress situation at Baptist Hospital wherein a shooting victims family became disorderly. Conflicting details emerged as to how many local police officers were there, but it still concerned citizens enough to make them feel that their safety had been compromised. Baptist does not have armed security, and the police become the de facto security at the facility during these times of crisis. Regardless of whether one officer or six were present in the aftermath, it was obvious that some people had lost trust in anyone being able to handle the situation properly, judging by their comments. who has a close relationship with the Mississippi State Medical Association. The proposal, sponsored by Representative Jeff Smith, never even made it to the House floor. We do have doctors who are extremely supportive of acupuncture, stated Mallory, and those doctors also dont understand either why the law exists as it does, or why other doctors refuse to sign referrals for their patients who request it. The law, as it stands today, is prohibitive and, in the end, often prevents patients from receiving care, according to Mallory, for conditions where they have reached the end of the line in terms of Western Medicine. The saddest part of that situation is that this is where acupuncture tends to shine - in those cases where chronic medications or surgery are the only options left. Dr. Blake Mitchell, vice president of the Mississippi Council of Advisors in Acupuncture, and himself a big supporter of acupuncture, commented, tonguein-cheek, that the biggest problem doctors had with acupuncture was the fact that they had to sign referrals; none of them understand why they need to do this, whether they support acupuncture or not. He, himself, is also baffled as to why other doctors will not sign referrals for acupuncture when requested by their patients to do so. The Mississippi Medical Associations response to the Mississippi Oriental Medicine Associations attempt to have the referral clause of the Acupuncture Practice Act removed was, There are less than 10 acupuncturists in the state; therefore, the physician referral process should not be affecting a large population. In a statement to Rhonda Freeman, bureau director for the State Medical Board, who attended the meeting on behalf of Executive Director Dr. H. Vann Craig (who was ill), Mallory said, One person in pain should already be too many. She pleaded that the Medical Board do something about this situation, either by helping to have the law changed or by informing doctors about the practice of acupuncture, as the majority of them seem to look upon it with a degree

__________

The Mississippi Council of Advisors in Acupuncture met in Jackson, Miss., last Friday, July 27, 2012. Prominent on the agenda was a discussion of the perplexing laws of the State of Mississippi regarding the practice of acupuncture - namely, that Mississippi is the only state in the country that requires written consent from a physician in order for a patient to receive acupuncture. The problem is that it is the patients who are being negatively affected by the current laws. Take, for instance, an elderly woman who is on chronic medication for incapacitating back pain or arthritis, who could benefit from acupuncture. If she asks her doctor about the possibility of being referred to an acupuncturist, the decision as to whether to allow her to receive the treatment rests solely with the doctor, regardless of the doctors level of knowledge about the procedure. This difficulty in obtaining a referral results in patients incurring higher medical bills than necessary and delays the commencement of what, for many people, could be a very effective course of treatment. Ive had situations where it took up to three months to get a doctors referral, using up to seven different doctors, stated Clare Mallory, L.Ac., M.Ac., a licensed acupuncturist who was on the meeting agenda to speak on the topic and who had brought with her a stack of copies of refused referrals. It comes down to a patient care issue. When I get letters from doctors stating, I dont think this would help her, it seems like an emotional response because the doctors dont know enough about acupuncture. In order to be licensed as an acupuncturist, an individual is required to have a Masters Degree along with upwards of 3,000 hours of instruction, yet the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure, which is the governing body for licensed acupuncturists, still holds that doctors should have the ultimate authority over what should be a patients right. The State Medical Boards support for The Acupuncture Practice Act, which was signed into law in 2009, was contingent on the inclusion of this ridiculous clause. Acupuncturists, as well as their patients and supporters, advocated for an amendment to the current law during the most recent session of the state legislature but were thwarted by Sam Mims, chairman for the Public Health Committee on the House side,

of skepticism. Ms. Freeman suggested that the Advisory Board write a letter that the Medical Board would then send to doctors across the state, advising them of the law. Another topic of discussion at the Advisory Board meeting was a recent meeting of the Mississippi State Board of Physical Therapy, which was attended by Debbie Moore, DC, L.Ac., and Jerusha De Groote Stephens, MSOM, L.Ac., President and Secretary, respectively, of the Mississippi Council of Advisors in Acupuncture, at which a decision was made to include dry needling into the scope of practice for physical therapists upon completion of a 50-hour course. The Advisory Boards concern revolves around the following issues: the small number of hours required in order to practice dry needling (even MDs have to study 200 hours to practice acupuncture); the term dry needling itself - which, by definition (according to the current law), is acupuncture; and the fact that no legal avenues have been pursued to implement such a practice. The Advisory Council is considering legal action on the matter. Jerusha Stephens commented, after the meeting, that for a practice [acupuncture] that everyone [the political committees opposing it] seems to think is something people arent interested in, its interesting that even physical therapists now are trying to include it in their scope of practice. Its a case in point that acupuncture is gaining in popularity as a valid form of complementary therapy. The Mississippi Oriental Medicine Association will be revisiting the referral clause of the Acupuncture Practice Act in 2013, when the Practice Act is up for review - which means it wont be able to be swept under the rug again this time around. If you would like to aid the Mississippi Oriental Medicine Association in their efforts to move Mississippi more into the 21st century by removing this oppressive clause, please contact them at mississippiorientalmedicineassoc@yahoo. com.

George Swales Resigns As Member Of CCVB Board

The Real Story Staff Report
George Swales has submitted his resignation as a member of the Board of Directors of the Columbus Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau. Swales hand delivered his two-sentence letter of resignation (a copy of which appears below) to the Board of Supervisors offices on the morning of Wednesday, July 25. When contacted at his residence, Swales was tight lipped about the situation. I have served on the CCVB Board for six years, as comment. Supervisor Jeff Smith, who walked into the Supervisors office just as Swales was delivering the resignation letter, said that he was shocked to learn of Swales decision. When asked what Swales said to him about the matter, Smith replied, He didnt have much to say. It was obvious that he had done a lot of thinking about the situation. George has been a good advisor to me in terms of the CVB, stated Smith, in describing his relationship with Swales. I did not know him before I was elected to the board [Lowndes County Board of Supervisors], but we have developed a good relationship since then. As a matter of fact, I have held two of my district meetings at his house. I want to commend George Swales for his diligent service to the people, stated Smith in regards to Swales departure. When contacted for comment, Board of Supervisors President Harry Sanders indicated that he was unaware of Swales resignation and thus would have no comment. He did add that Swales resignation does not become official until the board votes to accept his resignation - likely at its next meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, July 31.

well as 27 years in the military, and I have decided to do something else, stated Swales in response to a question about his reason for resigning at this time. When asked if there was a single incident or situation that prompted his resignation, Swales said, No. He also denied that he had been pressured into resigning. In response to a question as to how he felt, in retrospect, about the divisiveness that has plagued the board over the last 18 months, he responded, No

The Drug War Recedes?
Chris Christie is not a wimp, a hippie or a countercultural icon. Hes not known for taking time out from budget negotiations to smoke dope, or for his sympathy for drug dealers. Yet he is a so -liner on the war on drugs. at the combative New Jersey governor and Republican rock star -- just tapped to keynote the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla. -- vocally dissents from drug-war orthodoxy is another sign that the tectonic plates of the drug debate are shi ing. Perhaps our appetite for spending billions and incarcerating millions, in the service of pieties immune to rational analysis, is not limitless a er all. In a speech at the Brookings Institution, Christie called the war on drugs well intentioned, but a failure. He just signed a law to mandate treatment rather than jail time for nonviolent drug o enders. e Democratic rising star in New Jersey, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, recently condemned the drug war in strikingly similar terms as big overgrown government at its worst. In Jersey, the drug war is getting it from both barrels and both parties. Exhaustion is nally setting in with the enormous human and scal costs of attempting to eradicate the ineradicable. People have always used intoxicants, and always will, in ways ancient and new. e Good Book tells that no sooner had Noah planted a vineyard than he drank of the wine, and was drunken. A er all the countless resources expended trying to keep illegal drugs from entering the United States, e New York Times recently reported, abuse of indigenous prescription drugs is the nations biggest drug problem. In 2008, it accounted for the lions share of overdose deaths. e war on drugs overseas, a U.S. foreign-policy priority for decades, has only shi ed around trafcking routes. Mark Schneider of the International Crisis Group notes how -- in the mercury e ect -- pressure against the cartels in Colombia squeezed the action into Mexico, where it is now being displaced again, to Central America and the Caribbean. No wonder that at the Summit of the Americas in April, Latin American leaders expressed disenchantment with the entire enterprise. No one cra ing American laws from scratch purely on a basis of public health would make marijuana illegal while alcohol -- much more damaging to society -- is legal. Slowly, the prohibition on marijuana is giving way. Medical marijuana is legal in 17 states and the District of Columbia. Colorado, Oregon and Washington state will consider ballot measures to legalize the drug in November. e current regime makes criminals of millions of casual users, but legalization -- even in one state, according to experts Beau Kilmer and Jonathan Caulkins -- could collapse the price nationally and lead to more widespread use. Every alternative has its pitfalls. But we are exiting the era when a focus on the harmful e ects of illegal drugs excludes all consideration of the harmful e ects of their hard- sted prohibition. e debate is becoming less susceptible to cheap rhetorical bullying. If Chris Christie, arguably the toughest Republican in the country, is open to new approaches, theres hope for everyone else. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review. Topic: Teaching Children How To Be Accepting
Meagan ONan
Dear Meagan, I am constantly trying to expose/talk to my children about the differences in all people. I want them to grow up to be as non-judgmental as possible and sympathetic to many. With that said, we live in a very sheltered area. My kids are not exposed to people with different skin colors, religions, points of view, etc., very often. What are some ideas that you might have on ways to incorporate tolerance and acceptance in young people? What lessons do you think are most important? Sincerely, Caring parent Dear Caring Parent, It all starts with you. When you are around people who are different, how accepting are you, and what do you say around your children during those moments? When you are watching a TV show together or traveling, how do you deal with cultural differences, and what might your children be learning from your own actions? I wanted to start off by saying that because children are sponges - especially around their parents, as their parents approval is vitally important to them. Children learn from you as parents what is right (to you) and what is wrong (to you), so it is important that you first look at yourself and determine if the messages you are sending about people who are different than you are, in fact, tolerant and accepting. Beyond being aware of what you are saying and how you are acting around your children, it is important to expose them to as much as possible. Go to a different church on a Sunday, eat at new restaurants, travel more to areas that are not like your own and have conversations about different people on TV. Or you could even talk about a new culture/new religion/ new part of the world each week or month. Have your children help you do research about a topic you choose, and learn about them together. Make it exciting. You might consider traveling to places you have researched together. If you dont have the means to travel often, find places in your community (or close by) where you could go and give your children a taste of what they have learned. Life is an adventure, and the more your children know about all of our differences, the easier it will be for them to adjust when they get out on their own. Try and refrain from saying anything negative about other cultures or ways of life. Its important that you allow your children to acknowledge how they feel about their own experience before you share your opinion. Value their perspective, and make sure you tell them that how they feel about things is okay. One of the most important things that are passed on to our children is the message you give them about who you want them to be. I have seen numerous parents and children who struggle with this very concept. I always ask parents: Are your children who you wanted them to be? Even with the best of intentions, I often find that parents put a lot of pressure on their children to be something they are not. Accept your children for who they are, and help them develop into who they want to be you can do this by valuing their thoughts on life and what they think about differences in the world. There are a lot of lessons in life that are important to share with our children. The most important, in my opinion, are to teach them to feel good about who they are, to be compassionate and loving towards others (you can do this by giving them a lot of information as illustrated above), and to show them how to trust life (integrating some sort of spiritual practice into your daily routine would be key meditation, yoga, prayer, or simply talking about what you are grateful for at the dinner table). These are lessons that we learn on many different levels as we grow, and its important for the success of your own childs perceived self-worth that a strong foundation be built around these concepts. After that, it is up to your child to be who they want to be through their own tough choices, hard moments and decisions about their future. The toughest job for you will be to let them go be exactly whoever that is.

Have you ever found yourself people watching? That is, simply sitting or being in a public place, just observing the actions and behaviors of others? Have you ever found yourself people watching at the Columbus Riverwalk? Points For Your Health: Migranes

If youve ever had a migraine, you dont need to be told how miserable it makes you feel. e intense pain, blurry vision, light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, foggy thinking, nausea and other symptoms that can accompany a migraine can incapacitate even the most stoic person. Many people have what are called intractable migraines - migraines that dont respond to traditional treatment. And for those whose migraines do respond to traditional treatment (medication) or even Botox (which can be very successful in treating migraines), it can be a very costly a air. Even acupuncture, which has very high success rates with migraines, adds up unless you happen to nd a low-cost clinic (which we are lucky to have here in Columbus). Most of the people I see for chronic migraines have tried, at some point, to gure out what it is that may be causing the migraines, and many have tried cutting out triggers such as chocolate and alcohol. But there are other foods that are known migraine triggers that many people havent tried eliminating. A good majority of my patients, when they do start experimenting with these foods, notice a signi cant di erence in their headache patterns and intensity. e main foods that I suggest my patients try cutting out of their diet are gluten, monosodium glutamate and aspartame. I always recommend eliminating them one at a time (you can eliminate all three together, but if you do that, you will need to add them back into your diet one at a time to determine which one was the culprit). Dairy can also be a migraine trigger, although in my experience its more of an exacerbator than an actual trigger. Gluten, as Ive mentioned in previous articles, is the sticky protein found in barley, wheat and rye (and on oats). It is also hidden in a huge variety of other foods, so if you are going to try cutting out gluten (which I highly recommend for migraine sufferers), spend a week or two researching foods that have gluten in them. One website that I nd extremely helpful for this is www.foodfacts.com. Gluten has been linked to many other conditions, in addition to migraines, from asthma to epilepsy to infertility. I recommend researching it and educating yourself on how it may be a ecting your health, regardless of whether or not you su er from migraines. One last thing about gluten: You need to commit to cutting it out for at least three weeks in order to really know if its triggering migraines, because gluten stays in your

system for 14 days. And plan on some withdrawal symptoms in the rst few days, but stick to it anyway! e next two foodstu s (an inappropriate title, to say the least), should, in my opinion, be illegal: MSG and aspartame. Both are huge migraine triggers. Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, is a avor enhancer used in many restaurant foods and is present in a majority of processed foods and spices. MSG has been extensively researched and is a known trigger for migraines and other neurological conditions. It has also been associated with the growth and spread of cancer cells and sudden cardiac death. Aspartame is a non-sugar sweetener used in most diet foods. With research backing its association not only with migraines and other neurological conditions but also many types of cancer, brain tumors, hyperactivity in children, depression and other disorders, its shocking that its not only still legal but also the main non-sugar sweetener on the market. (Incidentally, ladies, nonsugar doesnt make it slimming; it also increases the risk of obesity.) And nally (back to the migraines), lets not forget the roles of stress, exercise and water in migraines. Stress is a known migraine trigger. Keeping your stress levels down (through meditation/yoga/ acupuncture/rest or whatever else you need to do) is inarguably one of the best things you can do for your health in general. Exercise moves Qi: Any kind of pain is stuck Qi, so moderate regular exercise is important for overall health and pain reduction. Water is Gods medicine, period. Drink it. e recommended daily average is half your body weight in ounces, so if youre a 140-pound woman that means you should be drinking 70 ounces of water on an average day. Pain syndromes increase when you arent drinking enough water. (If you dont like the taste of water, drink it at room temperature so you can slug it down - think of it as medicine.) ere are other common migraine triggers that can easily be found with a quick Google search. If you su er from migraines and havent explored all your options, take heart, because there very well may be something you can do to relieve your pain. Remember - taking charge of your health now will save you a ton of time, money and misery in the long run!

Financial Tips for Newly Single Women
Within a marriage, a man and a womans nancial circumstances are generally pretty much equal. But if a divorce occurs, the womans situation tends to be somewhat more challenging than that of her exspouse. And thats why, during this major life transition, you may want to meet with a professional nancial advisor to go over your spending needs and your cash ow, so that you know what you absolutely need today - and how you can plan for tomorrow. But before we get into some possible steps you can take, lets look at some of the reasons that women may fare worse than men, nancially speaking, following a divorce: Lower income - The average womans family income drops by 37% a er divorce, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And, in many cases, divorce exacerbates a situation in which women are already trailing men in earnings. In fact, women still only earn 77 cents for each dollar earned by men, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Smaller retirement accounts - The average balance on womens de ned contribution plans (such as 401(k) plans) is only 60 percent of mens average balances, according to LIMRA, a financial services research organization. Of course, averages are just that - averages. But whether you recognize yourself in the above numbers or not, consider these suggestions: Create an emergency fund. Try to put six months to a years worth of living expenses in a liquid account. Once youve established this emergency fund, you wont have to dip into long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs such as an expensive car repair, a new furnace or a large medical bill. Contribute as much as you can a ord to your retirement ac-

counts. Even if you will eventually receive some of your ex-spouses retirement funds, you need to take full advantage of your own savings opportunities because its pretty hard to save too much for retirement. If money is tight, it wont always be easy, but contribute as much as you can to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. At a minimum, put in enough to earn the employers match, if one is o ered. Rebalance your investment portfolio. If you are now investing for yourself, youll want to take a close look at your asset mix to make sure it is appropriate for your situation. For example, your risk tolerance may be quite di erent than that of your ex-spouses, so if you now have total control over an investment portfolio, you need to make sure it re ects your needs and preferences. Consequently, you may need to rebalance your holdings.

Above all, get some help. As mentioned above, now is a good time to meet with a nancial advisor. And if you dont have much experience in managing your nances, you may even nd it helpful to work with a trust company, which can collaborate with your nancial provider to manage your assets and can also provide a variety of other functions, including bill payment and recordkeeping. A trust companys services can prove especially valuable to you and your family should you ever become incapacitated. Unfortunately, a divorce may leave you feeling at sea in many areas of your life. But by following the above suggestions, you can at least help keep your nancial ship in calmer waters. is article was written for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Veterans Eligible To Return To Active Duty

Enlisted veterans who have been honorably discharged over the last few years or are currently serving in the National Guard or Air Force Reserves may be eligible to return to active duty. The Air Force, through its prior service recruiting program, is seeking 250 highly quali ed prior service applicants to ll a variety of jobs, from recruiter to contractor and many others, depending on past experience. I have had many veterans in the past ask me if they could come back, said Technical Sergeant Gregory Hite, the local Air Force recruiter. This new program will allow interested and eligible veterans to return to the active duty Air Force. This program is open to prior service members of all branches who have successfully completed Basic Training and been separated for at least 90 days. Guard and Reserve

applicants will need a conditional release from their commander. The process can take anywhere from one to four months, and applicants may be required to retake their physical and ASVAB tests. All applicants will ll out a base-of-preference worksheet for assignment, and pay grade will be determined by current Air Force Instruction. This is a win-win program; many service members get out to pursue another passion and realize how much they miss the Air Force, said Hite. The Air Force wins with the members experience being returned to active duty and, in most cases, can send an airman right to a gaining unit. Please contact Technical Sergeant Hite at 662-241-5811, as additional quali cations for the program may apply.

MUW Is Recipient Of U.S. Department Of Energy Grant

Paige Canada-Greene
Karen Bishop, Director of Energy and Natural Resources Division for the Mississippi Development Authority, announced Wednesday at a Mississippi University for Women press conference that e W is one of nine universities in Mississippi to receive a grant to advance energy efciency in public facilities. Other universities to receive grants include: Mississippi State; Ole Miss; University of Southern Mississippi; Jackson State University; Mississippi Valley State University; University of Mississippi Medical Center; Delta State University; and Alcorn University. Mississippi was awarded $725,000 to support energy e ciency improvements at the states public universities. Monies will be used to help create an energy e ciency retrot strategy for the states Institutions of Higher Learning facilities. e goal is to reduce energy consumption at Mississippis public universities by 20 percent by the year 2020. In addition, the Tennessee Valley Authority committed $150,000 towards the project to each of the three Mississippi public universities within its service area. Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi State and the University of Mississippi will bene t from the funding. e money will be dispersed in annual increments of $50,000 over a threeyear period. David Sparks, Mississippi energy e ciency manager for TVA, said, Mississippi is home to the rst TVA municipal power supplier and the nations rst electric power cooperative, and the state has always been a vital region of the TVA service area. e partnership with the State of Mississippi to promote energy efciency leadership at the states public universities is the latest chapter in a historical relationship that TVA values dearly. We want to continue to promote energy e ciency leadership at the states public universities. MUW President Dr. Jim Borsig said that the details of the programs implementation are yet to be nalized, but it is expected to commence in the next several months. It will help us to accelerate projects to save energy that save us money every year, which we can re-invest in the academic side of the university, said Borsig. Institutions of Higher Learning has been at the forefront of advancing energy e ciency in state buildings for a number of years through the creation of the IHL Energy Council and its work to implement energy management strategies throughout state universities in 2009. Borsig was instrumental in the development of this program. Bishop said, ere are some-

Our goal is to create more jobs in our state by educating Mississippians and local government officials about the benefits of bed-andbreakfast inns in the community, said Ron Fry, president of BBAM. These workshops will give attendees the knowledge and tools necessary to open or invest in their own bed-andbreakfast inn. Each event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. The dates and locations are as follows: August 21 Columbus: Pope Banquet Room, Mississippi University for Women Campus (Registration deadline August 15). August 22 Clarksdale: Hopson Plantation (Registration deadline August 16). August 23 Jackson: Fairview Inn (Registration deadline August 17). September 5 Natchez: Monmouth Plantation (Registration deadline August 29). September 6 Hattiesburg: Cultural Center (Registration deadline August 30). September 7 Gulfport: Oak Crest Mansion (Registration deadline August 31). Attendees will learn about developing a business plan, identifying potential properties and existing facilities suited for bed-and-breakfast inns, zoning requirements, available tax credits for historic properties, marketing and operations, and a checklist of steps necessary to open an inn. The workshops are also designed to inform local officials

Mississippians interested in starting their own bed-and-breakfast inns, but also mayors, city council members, Main Street Association representatives, and tourism boards and staff to these informative events, said Joy Foy, director of MDAs Asset Development Division. Many communities have the potential to add lodging options that create jobs, generate tax revenues, attract additional visitors, preserve historic landmarks and contribute to community revitalization with the establishment of bed-andbreakfast inns in their areas, and this workshop series will provide valuable information to both prospective owners and investors and local leaders interested in building their local economies. The cost to attend the workshops is $25, which covers materials and lunch. For more information, contact Maybelle Beasley at (601) 956-0084 or Peter Sharp at (601) 9511000, or visit www.missbab.com. A Home For Spirits

The Real Story Staff Report
The Golden Triangle, and especially Columbus, is an area with a rich and complex history. The Civil War may have skirted this part of Mississippi, but our area was not untouched by the tragedy and pain of that horrible conflict. After the Battle of Shiloh, Columbus was used as a hospital town. Wounded soldiers from both the North and the South were brought here to be nursed in homes, schools, and buildings of all sorts. That sort of suffering creates energy that does not dissipate, even though more than a century-and-ahalf has passed. The echoes of profound grief and loss still reverberate. That intense force is manifested in phenomena that we call hauntings. Ghost hunting is something that has experienced a great rise in interest and popularity thanks to several television shows that explore the subject of ghosts. This article will give you a bit of guidance about where you might find local ghosts. We have a professional ghost hunting group in Columbus. Monica Adams, the founder of Ghost Encounters of Mississippi, gives a few hints for the serious hunter: Wear dark clothing Leave the shiny jewelry at home (it may create a flash in a photograph) Do not wear perfume (many ghosts are associated with an aroma, like flowers, spices, tobacco, so you may miss a clue if your personal fragrance is overpowering) Always be respectful Perhaps the most haunted place in Columbus is Friendship Cemetery. There have been many documented sightings - some of them very recent - even within this year. Spirit soldiers still patrol the grounds. They are most often seen on the south side of the graveyard, where the land slopes down toward the river. They move in and out of the trees at the waters edge, ever watchful. These men are almost transparent. It takes a keen eye to pick them out of the trees shadows. They seem to be attracted to women, much more than men, and reveal themselves more frequently to ladies. A beautiful lady in a long white gown walks among the headstones. She may be seen as a complete figure, but at times only her full flowing skirt is visible. This lovely specter comes out in the evening, seldom during the daytime. The soldiers and the White Lady seem unaware of visitors. They are reliving some important moments in their lives. Their work, or purpose, does not concern us. One Friendship ghost is quite aware of human presences. She is dressed all in black and kneels over the grave of a child. There is much sadness in her expression as she looks up at passersby, but does not speak. The early morning hours are best for spotting her, just after sunup. If you see her, look quickly. This ghost evaporates in a second. Of course, in a town as old as Columbus, the ghosts are not confined to the cemetery. Almost every antebellum and Victorian home has a tale to tell. The walls of our lovely homes hold many fascinating stories. Perhaps this is because Columbus is such a charming place that some people wish to stay, even after death.

Some time ago, I read an article by a college professor who stated: The best thing that could happen to the New Testament has happened to it. Within the University, at least, the Bible has become simply another great book. Many in the world today consider the Bible to be a good book containing moral teachings written by noble men, yet they reject the idea that the Bible was given by inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16). Many college professors today teach that the Bible is simply a good book that is no more inspired than HomersOdysseyor Chaucers Canterbury Tales. It is the mere result of natural genius characteristic of men of unusual ability. Common sense, however, compels the honest person to reject such illogical notions. If the Bible is a great book but not inspired of God, it makes either liars or lunatics of the biblical writers, who claimed the Holy Spirit as the ultimate source of their writings. The honest person surely will admit that the Bible - a book that has

been studied and examined more than any other book in human history - definitely is not a product of insane men. Its unity, fulfilled prophecy, historical accuracy and scientific foreknowledge testify to an intelligent source. Thus, the Bible was written either by the honest or the dishonest. Logically, no other choices exist. Moses either lied or was truthful when he recorded: AndGod spoke all these words, saying: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:1-3). Moses claimed such inspiration literally hundreds of times. Was he a liar, or did he tell the truth? In the New Testament, Peter wrote that prophecy never came by the will of man, butholy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). Did Peter tell the truth, or was he lying? This same question can be asked of all the writers of the Bible who claimed inspiration. To say that

Can We Trust the Bible? If Its Just a Good Book, Then Its Not Gods Book

the Bible is simply a great book written by good men makes liars of the biblical writers who repeatedly claimed that God was the ultimate source of their documents (cf. 2 Samuel 23:2; Acts 1:16). The Bible is either a product of God or a product of liars. There are no other options. If these men were liars, then they insanely pronounced their own destruction, for they claimed that lying was wrong and that all impenitent liars would burn in hell (cf. Exodus 20:16; Colossians 3:9; Revelation 21:8). If these men were liars, it leaves as inexplicable the mystery of why modern man, with all his accumulated learning, has not been able to produce a comparable book to make the Bible obsolete. Finally, if these men were compulsive liars who filled an alleged historical work with thousands of lies, pray tell, why do so many unbelievers still call it a great book? Non-Christians who profess an admiration for the Bible should consider the foolishness of their position (www.apologetics-

It is the desire of God that we live a full and abundant life, not only in heaven but on this earth as well: The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10). If we are going to live such a life, we must follow the commands laid out for us from this book. May God bless! Eric Lyons, M.Min. Buddhism: A Way Of Life, Not A Religion

by Tom Wekenman
Buddhism is a way of life and a spiritual journey. Most people are surprised to know that Buddhism does not qualify as a religion: Unlike most common religions, it does not recognize a Supreme Being as the source of truth. Instead, Buddhism empowers individuals to discover their own spiritual strength through reflection, meditation and study. As such, Buddhism and the way of life it encourages can be used by individuals who practice other religious traditions. Even the Dalai Lama, who is widely known as a spokesman for world Buddhists, encourages people of mainstream religions to be open to Buddhist teachings for answers to spiritual questions. Two thousand six hundred years ago in India, a young prince named Siddhartra left his family and his sheltered life to seek a way to understand human nature; mostly, he wanted to know what caused men and women to suffer. What he found, after much consulting, teaching, observing and meditation throughout India, was that human problems are brought about due to our distorted attachment to things and ideas that seem solid and permanent but which are instead a creation of our own mind. It is through an understanding of how our mind truly works that people can understand the true nature of reality. This journey of understanding can, in time, produce a sense of calm enlightenment and reduce our feelings of tension, anger and pain. The growing popularity of Buddhism appears to be partly due to the hectic, fast-paced life in the modern world and the need to balance this lifestyle with more calming influences. Siddhartra, who became known as Buddha, urged people to find out these truths for themselves, and not to rely on the higher authority of others or even themselves. Through studying the teachings of a wide variety of spiritual leaders throughout history, individuals can find the true wisdom of enlightenment within themselves. The essence of Buddhism can be seen in the phrase Change your mind, change the world. This reflects the view that our perceptions often govern the way we live our lives. When we join the Buddhist path to understand and change our mind, we are practicing the Buddhist way of life. In his first sermon after achieving enlightenment, Buddha presented what is called The Eightfold Path, which contains the specific areas that Buddhists learn and develop in order to lead a successful, honest and compassionate life. The broad areas covered in the Eightfold Path are wisdom, ethical conduct and mental

discipline. Buddhists meditate in order to understand and strengthen their commitment to these principles. The actual items of the Eightfold Path are: Right View; Right Intention; Right Speech; Right Action; Right Livelihood; Right Effort; Right Mindfulness; and Right Concentration. Buddhism today has a rich history of written scriptures from Buddha; these and other important teachings are known as the Dharma, while the community of people who practices Buddhism is known as the Sangha. Indeed, the three pillars of Buddhism are Buddha, Dharma and Sangha: Buddha refers to the fact that Buddhists look to the Buddha because of the wisdom and clarity of his teachings; the Dharma is what Buddhists study; and the Sangha is the community of believers that supports each other in Buddhism. In modern times, Buddhism is spreading from its original base in Asia to Europe and North America. The two major schools of Buddhism are Mahayana and Theravada, and there are sub-groupings within each. The Golden Triangle is fortunate to have some options for people who want to take part in Buddhist study and meditation to enhance Thrift & Consignment their spiritual life. 131 Gardner Blvd. Columbus More information is available by call(662) 549-9943 ing (662) 705-0290.

Cavalier vs. Yankee The Importance Of Myth In The Makings Of The Civil War
By Ron Parlato
In a recent article on Southern mythmaking, James McPherson of the New York Review of Books discusses the issue of the regional identity of the South and the North Cavalier vs. Yankee. The Southern gentry believed that they were descended from the Normans and from the English aristocracy that continued the cavalier, chivalric and heroic tradition in the United States. They believed that Northerners, coming from peasant stock, were inferior, as were their social and economic models. This clash of cultures was an important factor contributing to the Civil War. While Southern bloodlines may not have followed the exact routes that early Southerners claimed, the importance of the belief in and propagationof this myth cannot be over-overestimated.As time went on, not only had the South consolidatedthe conviction thatits way of life was the higher expression of human society and its values, but the North also subscribed to it. The Puritan value of free labor, a concept which emerged out of the Enlightenment and found its way into the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, has often been cited as one of the most important issues of the Civil War. This term did not refer to slavery per se but to the God-given right of Americans to benefit from the fruits of their toil the exercise of which was ennobling and spiritually enriching. The Southern plantation value of work without reward i.e., slavery - was its diametrical opposite. Slaves were unable to benefit from their own work, and plantation owners became dissolute and depraved because of their idleness. The Cavalier-Yankee myth was a key component of this distinction. The Southern aristocrats felt that the plantation life they created was of a higher order than that of the common Northern working man. It was a world of higher culture and distilled social graces, and the defense of that culture was certainly a factor in the War.McPherson notes: By 1860 the notion had taken hold in the South that Southern whites, at least those in the planter class, were descended from the English Cavaliers, who in turn were descended from the Norman barons of William the Conqueror, while Yankees were descended from the Puritan Roundheads, common people who traced their descent from the Anglo-Saxons, who were conquered by the Normans in the eleventh century. In this view, Southerners were a race distinguished, in its earliest history, for its warlike and fearless character, a race, in all time since, renowned for its gallantry, its chivalry, its honor, its gentleness, and its intellect. The Souths foremost writer on political economy, James B.D. DeBow (1820-1867), helped popularize the Norman-Cavalier thesis in his journal, DeBows Review. DeBow justified secession on the grounds of irreconcilable ethnic differences between Northern and Southern whites. The Cavaliers, Jacobites, and Huguenots who settled the South naturally hate, condemn, and despise the Puritans who settled the North, declared DeBow. The former are master races, the latter, a slave race, the descendants of the Saxon serfs (McPherson). These ideas percolated into the popular press. The Richmond Dispatch, with the largest circulation of any newspaper in the Confederacy, published frequent editorials during the Civil War, one of which (February 1863) is quoted here: One must note the incongruous and discordant elements out of which the framers of the Constitution sought to create a homogeneous people. The great wonder is not that the two sections have fallen asunder at last, but that they held together so long. The dissimilarity between moral constitutions, habits of thought, breeding and manners of the Cavalier and Roundhead must run in the blood for generations, and defy all the glue and cement of political unions (McPherson). By the time of the Civil War, this mythology was complete. It was not only a war about slavery, free labor and economic competition, but about culture. It made no difference whether or not the claims to a Normanblood lineage were valid. The point was that the South fought to defend this Cavalier honor. Another historian claims that not only did the South believe this myth, but so did the North: Whatexactly is it that shores up the[Souths] mythology? What is so appealing, and to whom, in the concept of the enduring uniqueness of Dixie? One answer to these questions emanates from the relations between the South and the North while the process of regional identity construction was at its most intense. Rapid urbanization and industrialization in the North created a need for a usable opposite as an antidote to the speed of change. Emerging mass society, ethnic and racial amalgamation, the consolidating state machinery menaced the individual. The South seemed to be a very attractive cure for all these ills.

perspectives

For the pragmatic North the grace of the romanticized Lost Causism of the South held a great deal of irresistible power. Even in the heyday of abolitionist crusades, Northern representations of Southern life tended to have an aura of charming mystery (Southern American Regional Sensibility versus the North, Krzysztof Kowalczyk-Twarowski CLC, 5.11). This conclusion was confirmed by Ernest Moyne: The strident materialism of the aggressive Yankee first aroused in Americans definite longings for some form of aristocracy. By the 1830s this need seemed to be filled by the legendary Southern planter with his large estates, his impressive style of life, his Cavalier ancestry, and his reputed indifference to money matters (University of Delaware Review, 1961). William Taylors book, Yankee and Cavalier, subtitled The Old South and American National Character, discussed the elements of Southern myth: These concepts were reflected in the literature of the time, which also helped form them: the Yankee is pictured as industrious, ascetic, mercenary and hypocritical, the Southerner as gay, generous, cultured, and also as weak and vacillating, the Gentleman who was a doomed Aristocrat. The plantation novels of the 1830s by William Wirt, James Kirk Paulding and others, helped build the myth of the Southern Gentleman (Kirkus Reviews 1961). In conclusion, the Cavalier myth, regardless of its origin, was a central feature of the antebellum South, and it must be thrown into the mix of causes and antecedents to that conflict.

Portrait of the Artist: Bob Damm

The Real Story Staff
Most musicians learn to play their chosen instrument; often times, they become very proficient at it. Then there is Bob Damm. Damm (pronounced dah-m) has immersed himself in the study of percussion instruments. Not only has he obtained a PhD. in music education, which requires proficiency in a number of different instruments, he has actually spent time in other countries studying the culture and the history of specific drums as well as learning from masters of the various instruments. In response to a question, Damm stated, The drums chose me. When Damm was in the fourth grade, his Dad took him to a drum demonstration and said, Do you want to do that? Damms response was Yes! After college, Damm had a stint teaching band in a public high school. Soon, though, he decided he wanted to do more. Eventually, he received his doctorate from North Texas University, and for the past 18 years Damm has been a professor of music at Mississippi State University. In an effort to slake his thirst for knowledge, Damm has done more than staying current on trends in music. He has traveled to the African nations of Ghana (2004) and Mali (2011), and also to Cuba (2002). He has spent three weeks in Cuba, three weeks in Ghana, and, just last fall, he spent three months in Mali. During his trip to Mali, Damm studied under a Malian master named Bassidi Kone. He spent his first month there becoming acclimated to the country and the harsh conditions: Despite the fact that he was staying in Bamako, a city of two million people, Damm still had to shower using a bucket of water, which he had to get from a communal spigot in the city. He also had to learn the dialect that Kone spoke. Although he did not master the dialect, he learned enough to be able to communicate with his teacher. Damm spent the remainder of his time in Mali receiving instruction from Kone and traveling with him to performances of Kones band, Group Bwazon, in neighboring towns and villages. Although Damm is proficient on many types of percussion instruments (he owns about 200 instruments, in all), the djembe is perhaps his favorite. Djembe (jembay; the d is silent) comes from the Malinke language and, roughly translated, means there is a gathering or lets come together to understand each other. Back here in the Golden Triangle, Damm performs in a couple of bands. Primarily, he plays in Big Joe Sheltons band, the Black Prairie Blues Ambassadors, along with Ben Ferrell (guitar), Ed Swan (bass) and Shelton (harmonica, vocals). Occasionally, he plays in a Latin jazz trio called El Rio Trio. Damm is organizing and performing in a September 9 concert at MSUs McComas Theater called An African Musical Journey. The event, which is FREE and open to the public, will begin at 3 p.m. and will feature Damm and other local musicians performing the music of Mali, Ghana and Cuba. Bob Damm can be reached at RDamm@colled.msstate.edu.

Posing As An Adult
Saying Goodbye To A One-Of-AKind Grandmother
By Emily Gather Smith
My 91-year-old grandmother passed away on Sunday, July 22, and if I wanted to talk about all my memories of her, Id need about a hundred pages, plus two. My grandparents lived half a mile down the street from me my whole life, so, needless to say, they both had a tremendous impact on my life. I was named after my grandmother; my middle name, prior to marriage, was Beryl. I really resented that name most of my life because it was different and people made fun of it. Barrel of monkeys? Barrel of pickles? And I would sigh and say, No, its a precious stone, which, when explaining it to middle-schoolers, makes you sound about as cool as Al Gore. Now I almost wish it was my first name. It grew on me, for its individuality and for the fact that I got to be named after such a spitfire of a woman. One of my earliest memories of her is driving back from Starkville around dusk. She had taken me to get my hair cut, which was one of our little activities. She also used to Ogilvie home perm my hair (as well as my sisters), but the less said about that, the better. Anyway, we were driving, and it was a little foggy. She said, Wouldnt it be awful if we just dropped off into nothing? I said, Ummwhat? She said, People disappear all the time; what if they just fall off into the fog? My 7-year-old self sat, unblinking, in the passenger seat, watching for secret portals and air pockets big enough to swallow a car. I couldnt sleep that night, and I asked my dad about dropping off into nothing. I told him Mamaw had told me this was a possibility, and he said, Only listen to about half of what your grandmother says. She also told me that not only did lipstick make you feel better about almost any bad situation, you should never go out of the house without it. To this day, I dont leave the house without it. I feel like being bare-lipped at Walmart might bring about Armageddon. She told me, as a child, when I spent the night, to wash my face, neck and hands when I took a bath. I dont know why the other body parts werent as important; I just thought this was one of those things adults knew that children didnt. She was hilarious, but she told me not too long ago that she really didnt have a sense of humor. I asked her what she meant, and she said she just didnt get many jokes or much humor. I found this to be even funnier than if she had told a joke because shes made me laugh to the point of crying on many occasions. One of the first times I brought my husband to her house, which was always about 93 degrees, she had actually turned on one of the window-unit air conditioners. She was convinced that it didnt work, telling my husband and me that it was just blowing cool wind. A different time, at a Sunday dinner, she said, I dont drink tea, and then five minutes later said, I love tea. We all started laughing, and she had no idea what was so funny. Im speaking at her funeral, and I feel honored to do so. Im blessed to have had such a special woman help guide me through life, and I will miss her terribly. I cant imagine never hearing her high-pitched laugh again or never getting another voicemail from her that starts, I wish that girl would stop talking, that girl being me, on my voicemail greeting. There will never be another person like her. Maybe I can be that kind of grandmother, the kind that youll never forget as long as you live. I sure hope so. She will be missed and will always remain in my heart. Farewell, Mamaw, and Ill see you, although hopefully not too soon.

Blue Blazer Blast - Part 1

On the VIPs latest adventure, I attended Project Design Week at Auburn University (July 15-20), and it was absolutely fabulous! I made many new friends, gained valuable skills and developed a love for apparel design. While I was there, I discovered that the dorm halls and classrooms are just a tad bit frigid, and, sadly enough, I was not prepared for such conditions! After all, this is summer in the South - 100 degrees in the shade! So I was forced to purchase a sweatshirt (talk about irony); however, from this experience, the wonderful idea of a versatile blazer was born! As soon as my parents picked me up from camp, I demanded retail therapy at Urban Outfitters! There, I found the most fabulous turquoise blazer that just screamed 1980 - in a good way! I will not go into all the reasons why I decided to purchase this blazer this week, but join me next week to see all the glamour this blazer can

e next time that you hear somebody say, You cant teach an old dog new tricks, you should smile inwardly and think to yourself, at is so wrong! Almost every dog, regardless of age, can bene t from obedience training; training older dogs simply requires more patience and repetition. Puppy classes provide the opportunity for getting your new family member started o on the right track. ese classes provide the experiences and opportunities for your puppy to develop interaction skills with other puppies and people, and in new environments. Puppy socialization has been found to be an important factor in determining the psychological health of adult dogs. Training provides dogs with the basic good manners we all want - from how to o er a polite greeting when guests arrive, to walking nicely on the leash, to coming when called. A trained dog joins in the fun when company comes, accompanies the family to the kids sports games, goes with you to visit friends and relatives, and goes for hikes, swims and everything else the family does together. A trained dog is a fully participating member of the familywhat a gi for all of you! Having a well-trained dog opens up a wide range of advanced skill activities that you can participate in and enjoy with your dog, such as dog agility, rally obedience, dancing with your dog, tracking, search and rescue, skijoring, sledding, water rescue trials, obedience, carting, reading programs, therapy work - a nearly endless range of fun and philanthropic things to do! Training has been shown to be the single most important thing that keeps a dog in his or her forever home because it not only makes a dog into a better companion, it also lessens the likelihood that s/he will become a disruption to others. Training also builds your mutual bond, enhances the partnership and enriches the relationship you share with your dog. Is there anything better than that? Brees Will Steer Saints Through Adversity

By Jeremiah Short
The opening of NFL training camps signals the start of football season. Every team has challenges, questions and holes to fill. Normally, the topics of discussion are whether the new quarterback will get the job done or whether the defense will be more aggressive in the upcoming season. But I dont think anyone anticipates their teams head coach The Saints arent strangers to overcoming adversity, as they put together a winning season in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans in 2005. Over the past six years, they have faced on-thefield issues as well, such as injuries to key players like Reggie Bush, Deuce McAllister and Marques Colston. The question now has to be whether even a resilient team like the Saints can overcome the loss of their offensive mastermind, Payton, and defensive leader, Vilma. It doesnt help that the interim head coach, Joe Vitt, is suspended for the first six games due to his role in the aforementioned Bounty Gate. Many believe that the Saints will struggle this season with the (Sean Payton) and starting middle cloud that is hanging over the 2009 linebacker (Jonathon Vilma) getting Super Bowl Champions. I disagree, as suspended for the season, because of I believe the Saints still have one acetheir role in Bounty Gate (a pay-to- in-the-hole: Drew Brees, the startinjure program). This is what the New ing quarterback who has captained Orleans Saints are facing in 2012. the team through Katrina, injuries and scrutiny since arriving from San Diego following the 2005 season. Brees, who has thrown for 28,394 yards and 201 touchdowns since becoming a Saint, was a question mark himself to open training camp as the field general. The 11-year veteran was involved in bitter negotiations with Saints management over his new contract. Brees wanted $20-millionplus per season, and management thought that was too much. Eventually, the two sides came to a resolution in the form of a five-year, $100-million contract, with $60 million guaranteed (NFL record). The new deal makes the Saints at least formidable

on the field, even with their player and coaching losses and the ire they will draw from the media and opposing fans. With their superstar quarterback in the fold, the Saints have some semblance of normalcy as they get ready for an expected tumultuous season. They have obvious things to overcome, such as lack of leadership and overall game planning, but if there is one player who can steer the Saints through this adversity, its Drew Brees. Do you think Brees can steer the Saints through this adversity?

Five years probation doesnt make up for a lifetime of hollowness. Yes, Penn State received a harsh punishment. So what? What Sandusky did to his victims was from the darkest depths of the imagination - except for one crucial difference for them it was real. His victims were real. His actions were real. His perversion was real. His deviance knew no boundaries. On the news, some sportsreporting talking heads questioned whether the NCAA had any jurisdiction in this matter. They questioned whether the NCAA really had the right to punish the university for what occurred. That is right, happy readers.
