Augusta Township had several candidates put their names in for civil service during this years primary elections. Pete Hafler won the Democrat nomination for township supervisor with 47 percent of the townships votes. Hafler, the incumbent, beat fellow Democrat candidates William Tobler, who had 41 percent of the votes and Richard Tsvetanoff, who Haer garnered 10 percent of the vote. Brian Shelby won the Republican nomination for township supervisor by snagging 58 percent of the votes. Shelby beat out fellow Republican candidate Kathleen Jackson, who had 41 percent of the vote. Kathleen McDonald won the Republican nomination for township clerk with 51
percent of the votes, beating out Linda Adams. Incumbent Kathy Giszczak won the Democrat nomination over Iva Bielec with 52 percent of the votes. Lynda H. Dew won the Democrat nomination for township treasurer over incumbent Susan Burek with 50 percent of the votes. Nevel Overton Slack won the Republican nomination uncontested. Ira Todd, Cath Howard, Joseph Keefe and Laverne Kailimai won the Democrat nomination for township trustee with 17, 16, 16 and 15 percent of the votes respectively . Superior Township residents voted yes on all three millage proposals during the primary elections. Two millage renewals for fire and police services have been passed as well as a .25 millage to provide funds to defend the townships master plan and zoning ordinance in future litigation. The fire millage won 76 percent of the townships votes, the police renewal won 78 percent of the votes and the planning millage garnered 59 percent of the votes. Township Supervisor William McFarlane said the
.25 mils will help the township enforce its master plan when developers attempt to build outside of the townships sewer and water system. In our master plan, weve designated certain areas for our development, he said. Its when they go outside of the mast plan. They want to move a prime residential area into agricultural space. We feel that kind of dense development should go to our public sewer and water system. The .25 mils levied will charge residents .25 cents per $1,000 of taxable value for a period of three years. The township approximates $137,945 would be raised in
the first year through this millage. The fire millage is for 3.0 mils, or $3 per $1,000 of taxable value, and is a renewal of a previous millage that is expiring this year. The fire millage allows the township to run its fire services and is not an increase from the previous millage, McFarlane said. Superior Township has its own fire services and collaborates with Ann Arbor Township to help provide services to both areas. About 14 firefighters work to cover the areas. The police millage is another renewal for 2.25
