Chapter Diagnosis 1.

Identify issues pertaining to power and its abuse Immediately in the chapter, following the death of Old Major, two abusees of power are presented - Snowball and Napoleon. The two formulate Animalism, a philosophy that they themselves lead, in a communist manner. Before the end of the chapter, the pigs are begin to establish themselves as the 'rulers' of Animal Farm, by revealing to the other animals that they have learnt to read. This is a main factor of the parallels that are made between the Russian Revolution, with Jones and Old Major reflecting the personalities and perspectives of Tsar Nicholas II and Karl Marx respectively. 2. Brief plot overview (what happens) Old Major dies. The pigs take up the leadership roles with Snowball and Napoleon on the top. The pigs elaborate on the rebellion that old Major speaks about in the previous chapter which all of the animals become completely devoted to, they name it Animalism. The rebellion takes place a few days later when the animals break into the food stores because they had not been fed all day. Mr Jones and his men strike them with whips and the animals turn on them and chase them off the farm. They then dispose of anything that has to so with humans, after this the pigs introduce the Seven Commandments. The pigs become the leaders among the animals and teach them how to read and write. 3. Stylistic elements which validate Animal Farm as a canonical piece It is mainly within this chapter than any other part that stylistic elements which validate Animal Farm as a canonical piece are explored. Without knowing the background of the author or the storyline, it is within this chapter that the reader would start to discover the parallels between the novel and the Russian Revolution. As a major part of history, this is an event that people of the time could relate to. Animal Farm contains various examples of finely crafted language and certainly offers serious themes for consideration. Furthermore, upon reading the first page of the book, and developed further in chapter 2 is that the novel is both imaginative and creative. Because it references important historical events in an allegorical way that is readable by a large demographic it is relevant, and Orwell has allowed his novel to become part of the mutually agreed - upon English Literature Canon. 4. Key character developments and reference to the geo political events of the time The sudden death of Old Major represents the death of Lenin in 1924 leaving Snowball (Trotsky) and Napoleon (Stalin) to struggle for leadership in Russia. When the animals rebel against Mr Jones (Who represents the The Czar) and throw him off the farm, it mirrors the rebellion against the Russian royal family; the only difference is that the royal family are executed whereas Mr Jones, Miss Jones and his men are simply chased off the farm by the animals. Development among the animals happening mostly to the pigs who become the organisers and leaders of the farm. They are the smartest and can grasp the true meaning of why the animals should rebel against the humans.
