06EC54: MICROWAVE AND RADAR Overall learning Objectives of the course: This course will provide an introduction to microwave

engineering from 1GHz to 100GHz. The course is suitable for those people who wish to find out the principles and technology of microwave engineering such as is used in mobile and satellite communications.

1 Review of transmission line theory and wave engineering. 2 Microwave frequency bands and wavelengths. 3 Introduction to s-parameter description of 2-port networks 4 Scattering parameters revisited 5 Use to define microwave components. 6 Classical rectangular waveguide. 7 Group velocity and phase velocity, group and phase delay. 8 Other transmission line technologies 9 Components; directional couplers, attenuators, tee junctions and magic tees, ferrite devices. 10 Sources of microwave power - solid state and valve-based. 11 Gunn diodes, IMPATT diodes and related devices, tunneling. 12 TWTs and Klystrons 13 Diodes for mixing and detecting microwaves - Schottky diodes, planar-doped-barrier diodes, germanium backward diodes and tunnel diodes 14 Comparison of devices based on GaAs, InP and GaN 15 Materials considerations in microwave technology. 16 Comparison of devices based on Si, GaAs, InP and GaN 17 High-speed transistors for switching and amplifying 18 Radar & its applications

06EC 74: DSP Architecture &Algorithm Overall learning objectives of the course: 1. To understand the issues involved in implementing DSP algorithms on processors. 2. To understand and appreciate the features provided by various architectures in supporting common DSP tasks. 3. To understand the implementation of common DSP tasks on processors. 4 .It forms a basis for advanced courses in computer architecture, pipe lined processors, superscalar and fast computing processors, distributed processing which increases the performance and efficiency of computer processing.

06EC662 SATELLITE COMMUNICATION The course gives an insight into Satellite communication fundamentals. It involves an in-depth study of orbital theory, satellite Station keeping, satellite launch, link power budget design. FDMA, TDMA concepts, transponders, satellite TVRO, CATV, MATV, LNB, antenna etc. Modern VSAT systems and Global positioning system concepts. Direct broadcast satellite television and satellite radio systems design and installation considerations are also met. THE OBJECTIVES Provide an in-depth treatment of satellite communication systems operation and planning. Provide in-depth understanding of modern satellite multiple accesses, modulation and coding schemes. Review the state of the art in new research areas such as speech and video coding, satellite networking and satellite personal communications. Students should leave the course with knowledge of : 1. Link budgets & planning 2. Modulation, coding & multiple access 3. Digital audio/video broadcasting 4. Satellite Personal Communication Systems 5. Satellite Networking 6. Plus a good all round idea of current and emerging systems and technologies for the future.
