The Arts service


Richmond upon Thames Arts service and Orleans House Gallery provide arts for everyone, including exhibitions in three galleries, a diverse range of festivals, special events for families and our award-winning education provision for all ages and needs. 2012 is a year of celebrations and this theme runs throughout annual our exhibitions, arts events and education programme. We will be commemorating the Queens Diamond Jubilee with our Heritage Lottery Fund supported project and community curated exhibition Royal Connections. The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic games are commemorated with the Network exhibition Aspirations (12 January - 18 March) and 2012 Dreams (14 June - 30 september) in the stables Gallery, as well as a summer programme of outdoor music and dance performance that will span the length of the borough, bringing 2012 celebrations to everyone. This remarkable year will be marked by exuberant performances from outstanding UK and international artists in the boroughs parks and green spaces, town centres and along Richmond Riverside. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Ionides Bequest of artwork which formed the core of the Borough Art Collection, and the 40th anniversary of Orleans House Gallery. Fields of Vision: Landscapes Past & Present
28 January - 15 April
This fascinating multimedia exhibition juxtaposes historical works from the Richmond Borough Art Collection with work by contemporary artists, including David Downes and stephen Wiltshire. Works are thematically presented as Arcadian, naturalistic views and bustling urban scenes. Take a tour through the borough, London and beyond.

Royal Connections: Jubilee exhibition


21 April - 17 June
Marking the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee, this exhibition explores the local areas royal connections through history, from palaces and parks to myths and memories. Bringing together historic artworks and artefacts with more recent reminiscences and memorabilia, local people have worked with the gallery to create this celebration of all things royal in Richmond. This exhibition is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Polemically small
23 June - 23 september
Polemically small, curated by Zavier Ellis and Edward Lucie-smith, is based on the idea that small works of art are often more powerful in their effect than big ones. Certainly they require a different, more focused attention from the spectator. The exhibition consists of paintings and works on paper by 50 younger British artists, and offers a panorama of the current lively London art scene.

The Big 4.0: Highlights from the Richmond Borough Art Collection
29 September - 25 November
In this year of celebrations, 2012 also marks the 50th anniversary of the Ionides Bequest and the 40th anniversary of Orleans House Gallery as a public art gallery. This exhibition presents 40 key works from the prestigious Richmond Borough Art Collection selected by members of the local community.

The Building of a Borough: Building Designs


2 December - February 2013
This exhibition from the Local studies Collection, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, explores the built history of the towns and villages of Richmond upon Thames from the 1880s to the 1960s. From workmens cottages and dairies to grand theatres and large housing estates, some of the thousands of historic building plans will be on display, investigating the social history and development of the borough.

Network: Aspirations 12 January - 18 March
For this year of the Olympics, Aspirations will inspire work celebrating personal endeavours of all kinds. Over 70 artists will be exhibiting in various media: print, textiles, photographs, sculpture and ceramic work, as well as paint. This, the fifth Network biennial, will be an exciting and varied show.

Art & soul: Colour Burst! 22 March - 10 June


Art & soul celebrates mental and emotional wellbeing through the visual arts, poetry and sculpture. This year, the exhibitions theme is Colour Burst, and promises to be bolder and brighter than ever, with over 200 artworks from artists across south West London.

2012 Dreams 14 June - 30 september


In collaboration with st Marys University College, children and young people from across the borough of Richmond have explored the themes of the Paralympic Games: Courage, Determination, Equality and Inspiration. Their collaborative and individual works celebrate the Olympics as part of the wider 2012 Dreams events, showcasing arts, music and poetry.

Cutting Edge: Modern Affordable Design 4 October - 18 November
showcasing contemporary and affordable design in a range of media, from jewellery to furniture, ceramics to graphics, Cutting Edge brings the cream of Londons 2012 graduates to Twickenham. The exhibition is curated by Design History students from the V&A and Royal College of Art.

Anne Purkiss: Local Faces (2002-2012) 22 November - March 2013


A collection of black and white portrait photographs of people whose lives are connected with the Borough of Richmond, taken by local photographer Anne Purkiss. A decade on from her first Local Faces exhibition, this new display features portraits ten years on and welcomes new faces.

Good Wood/Wood Works: Contemporary wooden art & craft
21 January - 7 April
Working in wood is one of the oldest native crafts. The aim of this open exhibition is to change public perception of this marginalised medium and to conceptually take wood out of the garden shed, the craft fair and the new age festival to showcase the skill, efforts, talent, imagination and innovation involved.

Modus: The stuff of Memories Embroidered textiles


14 April -16 June
Modus is a group of like-minded embroiderers celebrating its 20th year. This show will present some of the changes in textile art during this period, as well as presenting current work. The group meets to explore new techniques together but produce very individual and varied work, from quilting, machine embroidery, silk painting through to stitched photographic images.

Polemically smaller
23 June - 22 september
This exhibition, the sibling of Polemically small at Orleans House Gallery, features a range of works on paper by 50 younger British artists, offers a panorama of the current London art scene, currently the liveliest in the world.

Thames Triumphant: sydney R Jones
29 September - 3 November
An exhibition celebrating the work of artist and author Sydney R Jones, who between 1920 and 1966 published a series of prints, etchings and books on the River Thames, the English countryside and London. Thames Triumphant brings together a selection of his most celebrated work, published at the outbreak of World War Two, and takes a memorable journey down Old Father Thames from its source, through the capital to the sea.

Picture This... Illustration open


10 November - 20 January 2013
This exhibition, which ties in with the popular Richmond upon Thames Literature Festival, celebrates contemporary childrens book illustrations by a host of UK-based artists. From the vibrant and colourful to the surreal and dark, there is a plethora of prints, paintings and publications to stimulate the imagination.

BOROUGH ART COLLECTION


Richmond Borough Art Collection comprises over 3,200 paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and objects from the early 18th century to the present day. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Ionides Bequest and the 40th anniversary of Orleans House Gallery. The collection will be celebrated through a number of exhibitions and education projects, as well as the study Room project which will make more of the collection accessible to the public at all times.

In Focus and Corridor Gallery

This popular series of themed displays presents works from the Borough Art Collection alongside creative responses to the collection by the local community. Works by children and young people are displayed regularly in the Corridor Gallery.

Free heritage and exhibition-based arts activities are available for children and adults to discover and enjoy together.

HOLI

spring Festival of Colour


saturday 10 March
Performances in Twickenham town centre 11.30am-1.00pm, Holi festival in the grounds of Orleans House Gallery 1.00-4.00pm This year the colours of spring will burst beyond the grounds of Orleans House Galleryas Holi extends to Twickenham. Promenade performers will bring the high street to life with street theatre and music and Church street will host an Indian market selling traditional crafts and goods. The festival at Orleans House Gallery will see the traditional bright coloured powder being thrown amongst the crowds along with an exciting programme of dance and music including Bollywood and Bhangra. Join us in this celebration to mark the end of the gloomy winter days and welcome in the joy of spring. The Richmond Holi Festival, delivered in partnership with the Ethnic Minorities Advocacy Group (EMAG) and the Twickenham Town Business Association combines vibrant music and dance with the traditional play of colours, art, workshops and stalls selling customary delicacies and handmade crafts.

DANCE
March - september
The Arts service continues to produce and promote an exciting programme of dance performance and participation for 2012, with Richdance our annual showcase of the boroughs dance talent. Richdance celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2012, and to mark this occasion we will be presenting a vibrant mix of youth dance with performances from professional dance companies and a platform for emerging choreographers, alongside a dance marketplace offering advice and information for the boroughs aspiring dancers. Choreographer Rosie Whitney-Fish will be revisiting the disused Twickenham Lido site to create a magically nostalgic dance theatre performance based on the memories of those who swam there in its hay day. As part of Big Dance 2012, Dear Lido will explore the heritage of this historic site, gathering stories from the local community to create a performance that celebrates the local area. 2012 will also see the creation of a brand new site-specific performance by the seven sisters Group at Hampton Pool. seven sisters Group creates atmospheric dance theatre with elements of fashion, visual and digital arts. Open studios Festival

ARThouse is Richmonds annual Artists Open studios Festival, allowing residents and visitors the chance to experience the abundance of creative talent living and working in the borough. Local artists, craftspeople and students open their homes, studios and classrooms to exhibit their work in a unique environment. With the chance to buy original pieces and meet the artists, the festival is a fantastic opportunity to explore the borough and to discover the creative talent right on your doorstep.

TWICKENHAM CARNIVAL
sunday 17 June
The culmination of a two-week Twickenham Riverside festival, Carnival opens with a colourful parade from York House to the Carnival Village in the grounds of Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham. The riverside comes alive with the sights and sounds of the Caribbean in a global celebration, welcoming the world to London for 2012. Twickenham Carnival is a wonderful summer celebration with music, dance, food, games and childrens arts activities a free summer party for all the family.

sHOWTIME OUTDOOR ARTs FEsTIVAL


21 July - 9 September
In celebration of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Mayor of London is presenting a festival of free events stretching across the whole of London. To mark this extraordinary year, we will be bringing you the best in theatre, dance and music to outdoor venues all across the borough. showtime will take place in Richmonds green spaces, town centres and high streets and will be an action packed programme of live performances, interventions and installations. With a special programme for children and young people, showtime will bring Richmond to life as we celebrate 2012.

LITERATURE FEsTIVAL
November
Featuring a line-up of authors, thinkers, celebrities, political figures, journalists and opinion formers, the Richmond upon Thames Literature Festival is a calendar highlight for the borough and further afield. The festival features a wide-ranging programme of events set in prestigious heritage locations as well as galleries, arts centres and universities across the borough. The festival features a fringe programme with a focus on live literature, spoken word and poetry from some of the UKs most exciting artists. Workshops for all age groups, promoting creative writing, blogging, script writing, poetry and podcasting provide opportunities for everyone to actively take part. EDUCATION
schools and teachers
Our schools programme supports delivery of the National Curriculum and encourages use of the arts and local heritage sites as resources for crosscurricular learning. We offer art workshops inspired by current exhibitions and an ongoing programme of heritage workshops. All onsite workshops include interactive tours and discussion followed by related practical activities such as print-making, sculpture and creative writing. These can be tailored for Early Years Foundation stage, Key stages 1-4 and sEN and adapted into outreach sessions that are delivered in schools. We also offer bespoke sessions and residencies in schools to support focused projects such as Arts Weeks and Artsmark. A range of services are also available for teachers including Inset, education packs and teachers evenings. EDUCATION
Alternative provision
We provide tutoring for young people on alternative education programmes. As a registered examination centre we deliver a range of qualifications and accredited awards including GCsEs, Bronze, silver and Gold Arts Awards and AQA Unit Awards scheme. Led by artist educators in the relaxed environment of the gallery, these programmes enable young people to gain new skills and develop confidence. These bespoke courses help young people prepare for their future and support them to progress with their educaton and work prospects. Art clubs and holiday activities


Art clubs

During term time exciting weekly art clubs at Orleans House Gallery offer budding young artists the opportunity to be creative and experiment with a wide range of art materials and practical techniques. After school art clubs run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for ages ranging from 5 to 15. Booking is essential; there is usually a waiting list. Octagon is our weekly art club for young people with disabilities aged 11-19 and Transitions is our weekly Art Club for young adults with additional needs aged 18-25.

Holiday activities

Fill your holidays with creativity! We offer a range of full and half day workshops for ages 4 to 14. Visit the gallery exhibition and work with professional artists specialising in a range of different techniques from drawing, painting and print-making to sculpture and textiles. We can provide support for children and young people with additional needs. Booking for Art Clubs and holiday activities is essential. EDUCATION
Families
We offer a wide range of arts activities for families and a targeted family wellbeing programme, which provide unique opportunities to create, have fun and learn together.

All ages
Family events: annual activities include Holi (March), springtime safari (May), Carnival (June), and the Big Draw (October). sunday Afternoon Art: free family drop-in sessions run on the first Sunday of every month for families and children aged 4 upwards. Family Holiday Workshops: drop-in art workshops during school holidays for local families at childrens centres across the borough.

Under-5s
seesaw: weekly drop-in arts and play sessions for families with children aged 0-5. This positive informal learning encourages creativity and exploration whilst developing communication and social skills. Dad Day: weekly drop-in art workshops for fathers with children under-5.

Family wellbeing
HEART: a creative arts group for young parents and their children. EAL Friendship Art Club: art workshops for families with English as an additional language. Expressive Arts: positive engagement and family support through creative workshops for referred and targeted families. EDUCATION
Young people
We provide opportunities during holidays and after school for young people to explore and interpret the Borough Art Collection and gallery exhibitions. Working with professional artists across a range of different media, young people are encouraged to share their ideas and responses with the wider community by creating, exhibiting and performing. Work experience

Orleans House Gallery welcomes applications from young people aged 14-25 for short-term placements and extended work experience. We can support young people with additional needs.

Internships

We offer three month internships throughout the year to individuals who want to gain new skills in gallery education, curatorial practice and arts events, as well as supporting Creative Apprenticeships. EDUCATION
Adults
The gallery offers talks, workshops and other activities for adults including gallery talks on request and partnership projects. The regular full day life drawing workshops enable adults to explore a range of materials and techniques. GALLERY sHOP
The gallery shop is stocked with stylish, contemporary and affordable gifts. Weve worked closely with design companies, artists and small manufacturers to create our own signature range of soaps, stationery and souvenirs. With each change of exhibition, there are new products, themed accordingly designer items for your home; quirky games and toys; beautiful gifts; unusual books; together with a wonderful range of greetings cards and postcards.

NORTH sTABLEs
KARMARAMA Caf
Enjoy a wide selection of hot and cold food using seasonal produce in the KARMARAMA Caf, open 9.00am-5.30pm, Tuesdays to Sundays throughout the year (we close at 4.30pm during winter months). Choose from a large selection of beverages, including illy coffee, in our licensed cafe. As a large proportion of our food is made to order by our chef, personal taste and dietary requirements can be catered for. Relax in the tranquil surroundings, enjoy the works from the Borough Art Collection, reproduced in the stables stalls, and discover the history of Orleans House, the people who lived here and surrounding area through our free permanent heritage exhibition and changing object case display. ARTIsT-IN-REsIDENCE sTUDIO
Our studio offers artists the unique opportunity to work on site in residencies inspired by the architecture, grounds and collection. These projects and commissions result in new works, which offer visitors exciting opportunities to explore the site from alternative creative perspectives. The residency programme forms an integral part of the gallerys offer through education, exhibitions and public art projects.

OCTAGON ROOM
situated within charming woodland overlooking the Thames, Orleans House Gallery provides the peace of the countryside within an accessible urban setting. The 1721 baroque Octagon Room, designed by James Gibbs, was built to entertain Queen Caroline, wife of George II who lavishly dined here in 1729. The room is perfect for weddings and civil partnerships, small receptions, naming ceremonies, blessings, cocktail parties, wakes and corporate events/meetings. The room accommodates up to 60 guests who are welcome to enjoy the picturesque grounds and gallery exhibitions. COACH HOUsE
The state-of-the-art Patel Taylor-designed Coach House Education Centre can be hired for training, meetings, conferences and events, as well as education activities and art parties. This versatile space is fitted with audiovisual equipment and has the capacity to seat up to 60 people.
