Bilingual School Counseling Intern Job Description

Status: Salary Range:

32 hours/week for 38 weeks (NUSD school-year calendar)during the school year $18/hour including pro-rated medical, dental and childcare benefits. Benefit coverage begins the first day of the month after 3 consecutive months of employment.

Department: Purpose:

Youth and Family Counseling The School Safety Advocate (SSA) placed at NUSDs San Jose Middle School works with youth who have been referred by school personnel for crisis intervention and support services. The SSA collaborates with school staff, family members, and community providers to connect students with resources essential to ensure academic success. S/he coordinates activities that enhance school safety and create a more positive school climate; provides risk assessments, crisis intervention and case management services; tracks services and student outcomes; and performs related work as required. This position is ideal for a candidate with a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology or Social Work working toward licensure as an MFT or LCSW. This position is part-time (32 hours/wk) and will work on the NUSD school-year calendar (mid-August through mid-June). This is a grant funded position. There may be opportunity for additional hours providing mental health counseling in the agencys clinic.

Physical Requirements:

Job involves repetitive motion, i.e. computer work. Employee must be able to lift and move items of up to 25 lbs., walk up and down stairs, stand for long periods of time, bend, and sit. The qualified candidate must also have a drivers license, able to drive to meetings; pass live scan background, TB test clearance, and pre-employment health examination. Clinical Services: 1) Available for crisis intervention, risk assessment; 2) Provides individual and family therapy, as appropriate; 3) provides group therapy and targeted/thematic groups as appropriate (i.e. girls' groups, life skills groups, etc.); 4) in coordination with supervisor, evaluates need, and carries out plan, for emergency hospitalization or police intervention, if needed; and 4) consults with principal, NYC Counseling Interns, school teacher, school psychologist, and others to provide continuity of services between mental health and educational resources and objectives.

Case Management: 1) Assesses needs, locates and arranges for appropriate referrals of clients as needed; 2) participates in Student Study Team (SST) meetings, establishing Individual Education Plans (IEP), as well as other school meetings; 3) encourages and supports family participation in school meetings as appropriate; 4) collaborates and maintains collateral contacts with school and community resources, including school resource officers, county, court, and probation officers, in addition to parents and significant others. Training and Consultation: 1) Facilitates workshops and provides consultation to parents and teachers; 2) promotes team-building and problem-solving; 3) participates in staff and team meetings, trainings and in-service meetings, and other meetings as assigned. Documentation: 1) Tracks student data and outcomes; 2) monitors effectiveness of interventions; 3) ensures that all paperwork and charting requirements are completed and submitted in a timely manner, as described within the NYC Youth and Family Counseling Program Manual; 4) supports integrity of service contract by monitoring eligibility requirements, as necessary; 5) performs other duties as assigned. These duties are to be performed in a manner that is consistent with the legal and ethical standards set by the professional field and the Novato Youth Center's mission. The SSA will demonstrate clinical skills and knowledge with the expectation that the incumbent will attend all department staff meetings, relevant school meetings, and participate in assigned supervision activities. Demonstrates strong assessment skills with reference to the DSM IV-R and welldeveloped interviewing skills. Has knowledge and awareness of best practices in school-based counseling or school social work. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and effectively with other professionals. Has knowledge of and ability to work in a community and agency structure. Demonstrates ability to carry out community assignments including those connected to the school sites. Knowledge and familiarity with multi-cultural populations, especially Latino and African-American communities. Possession of a Masters degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, or in a closely related field. Licensed MFT/LSCW or license-eligible, registered with the BBS. Has the equivalent of two years counseling experience with youth (5-15 years of age) and families, preferably in a school setting. The equivalent of two years full-time case management experience with youth (5-15 years of age) and families, preferably in a school setting.
