05/2011 Average Hours/Week: 30 Family Medicine & Community Health University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Externship, James A. Nicholson, MD, MSCE During my tenure at the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Pennsylvania, I have an ample opportunity to see and observe medical advances in family medicine field in a state of the art institution. I fathomed the importance of research and need of new ideas in this field of medicine. The environment of learning, teaching interwoven with research is brilliant. I took histories, performed physical examinations, assisted in PAP smears and microscope examinations. I have an opportunity to see different STDs and their preventive modalities. I educate my patients about healthy course of pregnancy and counseling about healthy life style changes to avoid harm to the mother and fetus. Routinely, I make differential diagnosis and discuss the cases with Dr. Nicholson. Here, I also consolidated patients interview tips, techniques and skills in US clinical settings. That's why I have developed a logical and stepwise approach to manage my patients. 12/2010 - 12/2010 Average Hours/Week: 40 Rosedale Medical Center (Family Practice)., Maryland As an Extern, Sohail M. Qarni M.D., M.P.H. I had a valuable experience in managing clinical patients with multitude of problems in this state of the art Rosedale Medical Center, Maryland. It is a community clinic setting in Baltimore, MD. This gave me a comprehensive idea of health care patients needs in urban, suburban and rural settings in United States. My duties included history taking, doing physical examination, diagnostic workup and presentations to Dr. Qarni along with documentation in the electronic medical record system. I had an opportunity to provide immunizations to the kids. I also had an opportunity to see children, adults, women and geriatric population as my patients. I loved the act of educating mothers about childrens nutritional needs. This practice has increased my knowledge of US health care system. 01/2009 - 05/2010 Average Hours/Week: 48 Locum Tenem, Pakistan Primary Care Physician Working as a resident in Mayo Hospital Lahore gave me a good hands on clinical experience in Pakistan. As a primary care physician, I enjoyed my work in private as well government setup. In DHQ2 Hospital Lahore, I was rotated on medical, OB/GYN and pediatric floors. I am fortunate enough to have wealth of experience in tropical medicine, minor surgeries and deliveries. It gave me a comprehensive idea of health care patients needs in urban, suburban and rural settings. 07/2001 - 05/2006 Average Hours/Week: 48 Foreign Experience Locum Tenem, Pakistan Primary Care Physician I worked continually in multitude of urban, suburban, private, government and volunteer settings in primary care in Pakistan. Especially at LGH Lahore, I had an exposure to the wide spectrum of diseases, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. I took histories, did physical exams, worked on differential diagnosis and treated my patients with compassion. I also got the opportunity to work with highly skilled and proficient colleagues. During this time period, I developed a logical and stepwise approach to manage patients.

Volunteer Experience
07/ 2002 - 03/2010 Average Hours/Week: 16 YDA Punjab and Helping Hands, Pakistan Primary Care Physicain I had an opportunity to volunteer basic health services in under privileged areas. During this period, I arranged medical camps in the rural and underserved areas with the help of my colleagues. I always educated my patients about the communicability of the diseases, their modes of spread, preventions and immunization. I also arranged and supervised flood and earthquake relief camps actively & efficiently. I worked tirelessly to ease the sufferings of victims of these natural disasters.

Research Experience
05/2011 Average Hours/Week: 24 University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Research associate, James A. Nicholson, MD, MSCE I feel pleasure of working in a state of the art institute of University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Family Medicine and Community health, as a research associate under supervision of Dr. James A. Nicholson. The cutting edge research here is deciphering many enigmas which were always mysteries. The environment of learning, teaching interwoven with research is brilliant. We are working on a research project, the active management of risks in the pregnancy at term in an urban population. In this retrospective clinical study, more than 2000 pregnant subjects have participated. This research has shown remarkably low cesarean section rates (20%) & NICU admission rates (9%) as compared to standard care where it is 35% & 20% respectively. It shows an association between a higher induction of labor rate and a lower cesarean delivery rates. We studied the impact of various risks like short stature, high BMI, anemia, nulliparity, multiparity and advance maternal age in pregnancy at term on birth outcomes.
