Chapter 5

Exponential and Logarithmic Functions

5.1 DEFINITION OF EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION

Wizards Note An exponential function is a function in which the independent variable x is the exponent in which b is a positive real number and not equal to 1. Its general form is f(x) = abx where a is a constant b > 0 and b 1.
The table of values of a function defines an exponential function if equal differences in x produce equal ratios in corresponding values of y .

Example 1

Determine which of the following describes an exponential function 1. f(x) = 3x 2. f(x) = x2 b > 0 and b 1. Item 2 , f(x) = x2 is not exponential function because x is a base and this function is a quadratic function. Item 3, f(x) = 3(-2 ) x is not an exponential function also because b = -2 ,b<0 Example 2 Determine if the table below describes an exponential function.
x y 1 2 2 4 3 8 4 16 5 32

3. f(x) = ( ) x 4. f(x) = 3(-2 ) x

Item 1 and 3 are exponential function because x is an exponent,

ratio:

2 = 4

1 2

4 1 = 8 2

8 1 = 16 2

16 1 = 32 2

Notice that the equal differences in x produce equal ratios in y, therefore the table describes an exponential function.

5.2 EXPONENTIAL EQUATIONS

Wizards Note Exponential Equation Exponential equation is an equation in which the unknown variable is the exponent.
Equality of Exponents Theorem Let b> 0, b1, and x and y are real numbers. If b = by, then x = y.

Example 1 Solve the following exponential equations . 1. 4-1 =

1 16

2. 125x+2= (

1 ) 25

Solution: 4-1 =

1 16

125x+2 = (

1 2x ) 25

4-1 = 4 -2 x 1 = -2 x = -2 + 1 x = -1
solution set is { -1 }

(5 3)x+2 = ( 5 -2) 2x (5) 3(x+2) = ( 5) -2( 2x ) 3(x + 2) = -2(2x) 3x + 6 = -4x 7x = 6 x=

5.1 RECTANGULAR COORDINATE SYSTEM

Wizards Note The Cartesian coordinate system uses two axes that are usually drown horizontally and vertically which are referred to as the x axis and y axis, respectively. The position of a point in the plane is determined by the ordered pair (x,y). The first element of the ordered pair, x, is the perpendicular distance of the point from the y axis and is called its abscissa. The second element, y, is the perpendicular distance of the point from the x axis and is called its ordinate. Together, x and y are called its coordinates.
