BEST plAcE To pEoplE wATch:

Potato Head. This is worth going to just for the people. Very new (opened in Dec 2011) with Jakarta owners. Trendy, lots of plastic people, lots of euro trash. Believe the food is quite good and a great place to watch the sun go down and perv on the beautiful people poncing around the pool. On the beachfront Jl Petitenget.

BEST ThAI/BAlInESE food:

Cafe Degan. Jl Petitenget No 9. This food is amazing, so authentic and brilliant flavours. Prices very, very reasonable and is possible to bring your own wine with a small surcharge. There is also a patisserie on the premises and they make all their own desserts and tasty treats. We saw creme anglaise being made from scratch and we tried one of the delicious crumbles for dessert. Ask the waiter for suggestions, they are very knowledgeable about the food, speak good english and were spot in with their suggestions the night we visited. Bookings +62 361 889 3271.

Restaurants
kUTA:
Mads Warung in the street that runs off Kuta Square, between Jalan Legian and Jalan Pantai. Cheap local food, sit and watch the world go by. Sederhan, on The Bypass at Kuta Grahe. Large air-conditioned restaurant serving Padang food. Popular with locals. Nosh type food, even does home deliveries. Not tried yet, but has been recommended. Ban Dar is a Chinese Seafood restaurant on Jln. Mertanadi [opp. Bali Bakery] in Kuta. It is immaculately clean and air-conditioned, spread over two levels and specialises in live seafood of every description. It is not only under Hong Kong management, but also with a Chinese chef. As you park your car in front the live seafood tanks line the wall; large grouper, abalone, lobsters, prawns and crabs. Your fish can be braised, pan-fried, steamed or deep-fried. This is a Bali Eats recommendation. eikon is a new late night place in the middle of Jalan Legian. A really good tapas menu and is open until the early hours of the morning. Sky Bar, also in the Jalan Legian drag. Three floors, one for dining (food is good) or party the night away on one of the other floors. The Aussies love it! The palace at Kuta Galleria (above Tiara supermarket) has a dim sum 7 days a week and reports are usually positive. Havent eaten there, but others have recommended. Basically Chinese food and rather cheap.

legIaN:
Warung Asia, Thai restaurant, tiny tiny difficult to get a table without queuing at night. Jln Warkudara, link road to Jln Arjuna (double six road). Great pad thai, and host of curries. Owned by Singaporians, real foodies, Laksa etc. Situated in a small block of shops in the one-way system that runs around the back of Peanuts, Bali Bungy and the football ground. Yet to eat here, but good reviews. The following Legian restaurant is a critique from Bali Eats newsletter (havent eaten here yet) Warung Murah is yet another street-side warung. On the road referred to as Jln. Double Six, in Legian, it is only 100 metres before the beach. What separates this warung from all of the others is that it always seems to be full.

SaNUr:
Cinnamon, in the middle of the main road (Jl Tamblingan). Has seriously good Illy coffee and professionally trained baristas.Cool and worth trying the specials the lunch menu steak salad with beetroot relish, fresh prawn salad roll, lemon herb squid. They buy in seafood and meat fresh every day. Friends went back a second time from Seminyak to have the grilled fish and reckon the best they had ever eaten. All vegetables washed in filtered water. BYO is possible. Pergola, on Jln Danau Toba. Has recently changed to a Japanese restaurant. Totally airconditoned. Little India Jln. Cemara 4. A tiny Indian restaurant and serving really, really good Indian food. Very large menu and why not try the Rogan Ghost (gotta love the Indo spelling). The Village, Jalan Danau Tamblingan (the main shopping street in Sanur). Really good Italian food, nice, trendy decor. Try the lemongrass marguerita for something different. Ph: 62 361 285025. Street Caf, in Jln. Danau Tamblingan, Sit either inside in air-con comfort or out on the tree-covered terrace. Casual, relaxing restaurant. We tried the steaks and they were very good, comes with a self serve salad bar. The following Sanur restaurants are a critique from Bali Eats newsletter (havent eaten at these places yet) Fire & Spice is a newcomer in the ever-changing food scene of Sanur. Located on Jln. Danau Tamblingan it attempts to offer food with a bit of taste. Many Mexican connotations appear on the menu, some original, some Tex-Cal versions and other interesting creations. Enchilladas [chicken or seafood in Mexican spices, wrapped in a tortilla] and Quesadillas [chicken with tomato, onion and cheese with guacamole and Mexican rice] are standard fare. Clay Oven, on the main street in Sanur, specialising in Tandoor with top Indian chef. Not tried but excellent reviews. ie Clay Oven, presenting perfect Indian food from the Tandoors of a master chef. The Chicken Roll is a breast of chicken stuffed with minced chicken and prawns before being roasted in the tandoor, a masterpiece! Top of the range is definitely their Raan Bahar. It is cut from a leg of lamb that has been marinated overnight, partly cooked in the tandoor, before finishing off by being simmered in onion gravy. La Pau It is open lunch and dinner, with extended late nights on the weekend, even live jazz played under the trees. Good Padang food at very cheap prices, their Beef Rendang a specialty. Late at night play spot the celebrity!.Triana is new to Sanur, and is a spanish restaurant on the main drag of Jln Tamblingan. Also serves Tapas, but am yet to try, so dont know the quality. arena pub and restaurant: Open from 4pm to 1am Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai Phone : + 62 361 287255 Full of expats and has an Aussie pub feel. The steaks are seriously good and cheap. Wednesday night is quiz night. Lots of fun, very casual.

SEMInYAk/kERoBokAn:
This is where the best restaurants and little bars are, heaps more than mentioned here, we just havent had time to try them all yet. Kudeta, definitely the place to be seen at in Bali. All the Aussie celebs go here. Probably the best location in all of the tourist area around Seminyak/Legian/Kuta. Not cheap by Bali standards (but definitely cheaper than restaurants of same quality in Aust), starts at about $50.00 per head for 1-2 courses plus a cocktail. Cocktails are around $12 at the current exchange rate. Toilets are gorgeous. The best breakfast in Bali for about $10.00, you can have everything on the menu and it has excellent food and coffee, and freshly blended fruit juices. Also great to go for pre dinner drinks or morning or afternoon tea. On Jalan Laksmana. Popular with expats on Sundays (all day and early evening). La Lucciola, similar to kudeta, similar prices and ambience. Has been around for a long lime and is also on the beach at Jalan Laksmana. Food varies from excellent to very average depending on the chef. Havent eaten here for a while, but recent sunset drinks were good. Gado Gado, similar again to La Lucciola, and a little pricey but classy. Jl Diyana Pura. As of July 2011 this was having a major refit, so good things to come. Mykonos, Greek food. Jl Laksmana. Tasty food and very reasonable. Been here forever. Trattoria, Italian. Hugely popular with expats, advisable to book as its always packed. Great cheap food, buzzing with atmosphere. Jalan Laksmana. Ultimo, Italian. Very new, very modern, with the kitchen on display, also has an enclosed air conditioned section with lounges and box seats at the back. Trendy, but still cheap by Aussie standards. Jalan Laksmana No 104X, almost next to Trattoria. Sate Bali, about the best Balinese food I have tasted and recently moved to the new shopping centre next to C-151 Jln Laksmana. Great value, and upmarket for Bali food. Still cheap. Also run a cooking school in the mornings, and you get to eat all that you cook. The owner/chef used to work at one of the top 5 star hotels in Bali. Queens Tandoor, Jln Raya No.73. in Seminyak. Seriously good indian food, and has an upstairs section that is airconditioned (cooling in the sticky hot season). Tel: (62-361) 732770/732771. Osteria Telese another restaurant on Eat Street (which is what everyone calls Jln. Laksmana, Its located almost opposite The Legian. It offers mid-priced Italian fare and is quite popular. Have always enjoyed the food. Grocer & Grind is a fairly new, trendy addition to the Bali scene. On Jln. Kayu Jati, in Kerobokan [the back road from behind La Lucciola past Loloan] Its based on the Aussie gourmet deli serving coffee. Has both open and aircond areas and the coffee is good. Reasonable wines served by the glass and the tapas worth a try. Brilliant breakfasts and include Ricotta Pancakes, with caramelised onions and fresh strawberries, and Moroccan Eggs [soft fried eggs on ciabatta with a spicy lamb sausage, hummus and chilli jam]. Lunch has a wide range of antipasti, including Tasting Plates and old Aussie favourites such as Hamburgers [with beetroot of course], Steak Sandwiches and Beer-battered Fish & Chips. Fresh Salads are good. Nicoise, Caesar [with chicken], Carpaccio and Caprese. Or you can have a Vegetable Stack with feta on rucola. Bistro Batu kali is new No 55 Jln. Laksmana. The restaurant is open to street, with a small boardwalk. An international menu, good prices (as most restaurants in Bali) and really good food. Didnt have a liquor license when we visited in June 2011, but you an BYO, or they will buy some for you. Great friendly staff too. This is a winner. Bookings +62 361 806 0729.

Evo at Sentosa Villas & Spa, Jl Pura Telaga Waja, Petitenget. Ph: 0361 735 552. Asian/Australian fusion. This is a new restaurant where Blossom lived previously. Authentic, genuine real italian food. No reports as yet, but Bali Eats website raves about it. Breeze on the beach at The Samaya is fantastic for sunset drinks with great nibbles. Dinner is also recommended for top quality, classy food. Not cheap. The Corner Store, Jl Laksmana 10A, Taman Sari Seminyak. On the shady corner, eat inside or out. Its basically a breaky come coffee shop where lots of tourists sit with their laptops and access the free internet access. Lots of freshly baked muffins and cookies. Great salads, quiches etc and price is cheap. Serve the biggest cappuccino. Not open in evenings. Sorriso very stylish and great ambience. JIts on Jln. Drupadi, Seminyak, at the Jln. Abimanyu [or Dyhana Pura if you prefer?] end. Has great italian food at very reasonable prices. Also has a casual lounge area if you just want to pop in for cocktails. Is possible to BYO. When we visited in June, there was a resident tarot reader called Lissa. He/she is absolutely delightful so have a reading after dinner. Lissa doesnt speak a lot of English, but she is so entertaining, it doesnt matter. Pay her double what she asks, she is worth it. Warung Sobat is in Jln. Batu Belig, Kerobokan. Whilst only a warung, pre booking for dinner is almost essential, such is its reputation for very cheap, tasty, food. This family business [cousins, nephews, sons and daughters abound] is a tourist restaurant, but they do it right! The fish is recommended and from the local Canggu fishermen, really fresh. The fish is grilled over charcoal, a Mixed Seafood consists of two different fish, prawns and squid and costs Rp.25,000 (around $4.00). Also Rendang Sapi and Ayam Kalasan [chicken stir fried in coconut milk and spices]. You can pre order the duck (24 hours notice), which we did, half of our party raved about it, and the others thought it tasted a little stewed though still very tasty. Will be back to try more of the dishes. Gourmet Caf on Petitenget is a part of the Bali Catering Group. Parking at front, air-conditioned inside with a food bar and normal tables on the front terrace, the place buzzes! Open from 7.00 and they offer a wide range of Paninis, Wraps, Baguettes, Salad and Sandwich bars so you can make your own. Breakfast was also good. Sardine, just across the road from Metis. Again brilliant decor and the owner is an interior designer. Concentrates on seafood, but chicken and red meat dishes also available. Can bring a good bottle of wine for a corkage charge. Really good food and a little up market. Mannekepis on Jalan Raya Seminyak. Fairly new a Belgian Jazz and Blues Bistro. This was recommended by an expat who said the restaurant had huge energy and she has fun everytime she goes. The fresh onion soup is enak sekali (seriously good). Ph 0361 8475 784 for bookings. The following Seminyak restaurants are a critique from Bali Eats newsletter (havent eaten at these places yet), some of the critiques are a little old, so maybe no longer in existence. The Tuckshop is at The Corner of Jlns. Laksmana and Drupadi in Kerobokan. Its cheap and it has good tucker, too! Maybe that is why this little hidden corner is always so busy both inside and on the tree covered terrace. Healthy breakfasts include Poached Apple with Organic Rice Puffs & Natural Yoghurt, topped with Wheatgerm & Royal Jelly Honey [they also offer the not-so-healthy ones as well]. Their Savoury Muffins include a special of the day, Baguettes include one with Ham [hand cut from the bone as it should be] with Swiss Cheese and Rocket, Bagels include stuffings of Turkey and Cranberry, and Salads include one with Prosciutto, Boconcini, Cherry Tomatoes, Pine Nuts and Balsamico. They also offer a wide variety of fresh juices, coffees and teas. Hombres is new on Jln Laksmana. Spanish cuisine. The Tapas are huge and they offer the usual pastas, salads, seafoods and meats. Kolega is another local warung, this time serving Javanese cuisine. A little different though, as it now has a car park next door. The car park is not only bigger than the warung itself but it is always full from midday to late afternoon. Must be good then? Kolega is situated in Jln. Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan, and there is only one potential problem; neither management, nor staff, speak any English, so any explanation of the food presented is totally unavailable. Fish, meat and vegetable dishes abound, and rows of eggs cooked with different spices, resulting in different colours. In typical fashion all are pre-cooked and on display in the glass cabinets. Do not worry though, just point and hope!

Day Dream is the latest hip night club/restaurant in Bali. A most stylish fit-out on the original site of The Living Room, Jln. Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan, sees a luxurious spread that encompasses water pools, bar and lounge areas as well as an outdoor dining area. Three competing establishments for this market now face-off against each other in a triangle of late night dining and entertainment, a very hot corner! Guns drawn at dusk! Dahana is Balis hidden Japanese restaurant! It is inside what was a private home, behind a white wall on a corner, midway along Jln.Raya Petitenget in Kerobokan. There is just a simple brass plate at the entrance with no other promotional signs. Tables surround the small swimming pool and a maze of flowering trees. It still feels as if you are dining in someones home. The fact that the owners often come and sit with you only enhances that feeling. The food is simple, inexpensive Japanese. Mezzo on Jln. Laksmana in Kerobokan, but is very different. At front an attractive small air-conditioned caf, in the middle section an open bar and lounge area, and outback a stylish garden area surrounded by small protected dining/drinking cabanas, away from the noise and pollution of the front street. Waroeng Kaget at the Bintang Supermarket carpark. Indo food cheap prices. Tasty food, clean restaurant. Also in the Bintang supermarket complex is a little cafe called delicioso, that has yummy cakes, breads, sweets and biscuits. Plenty of high fibre healthy loaves. Sip Wine Bar, Jl Raya Seminyak (where the old Spaghetti Jazz used to be, about 5-10 min walk from Bintang supermarket going towards Legian). This is a first for Bali! An incredible range of premium wines are available, many by the glass. It is also a French Bistro of a standard not before seen in Bali. Food with taste! Pastries [breads, pies and puffs] are sensational. Biku Tea House Restored on site was once an antique shop on Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan. It has now been transformed into one of the most relaxing environments for sipping your preferred cup of tea, checking your emails, nibbling Aussie Scones, noshing on Aussie style meat pies or enjoying any of the other light or full meals on offer. Biku is open for breakfast from 8.00am. Ciao, Jln. Sunset, in Seminyak. Its a new Italian restaurant and only open for dinner but already busy! Entrees of Dill Pickles rolled in Parma ham and Funghi Ripieni, mushrooms stuffed with a mix of vegetables, prosciutto and goats cheese whet the appetite. Pastas and Pizzas are the main attraction here; a large wood fired oven is centre stage. Cannelloni, Lasagna, Agnolotti [beef], Cappelletti [beef, pork or chicken], Ravioli [spinach and ricotta]. Tagliatelle and Gnocchi are all available. The pizza range is also extensive, but you can ask for your own creative combinations. Neno is a newcomer to Balis newest Eat Street, Raya Petitenget. Kerobokan. Asian/Western mix and a Wednesday live jazz night. Cucina Italiana Rustica is new on Batu Belig, in Kerobokan, a small stretch that houses much great value eating. It is right at the beginning of this road, just through the stone gates that herald its commencement. Nothing hidden about this place, a large car park faces the full-sized restaurant. Pride of place in this restaurant is an enormous pizza oven, wood-fired of course. The Capricciosa is with mushrooms, ham and black olives, the Viennese with beef sausage and basil. A wide variety of pasta is available, standards like Spaghetti, Tagliatelle, Gnocchi, Ravioli, Lasagna and Penne plus Maltagliati, all done with a range of sauces and ingredients. Amongst the normal dishes is Stracceti con Verdure, sliced beef sauted with vegetables and Olive Ripiene, pan fried stuffed olives. The wine list is reasonably priced, as indeed is the food. vivalavi restaurant is hidden behind the walls of the small Vivalavi Villas & Spa in Jln. Merta Sari, Kerobokan. Eat poolside, breakfast lunch and dinner. International food and relaxing atmosphere.

lestari grill & pasta is a caf/restaurant at the rear of the Umalas Stables in Kerobokan, in a garden setting by the swimming pool. On the 1st Saturday of every month they host a special Slow Cooked Food dinner. At Lestari they believe in the slow cooked food tradition, cooking slowly then eating slowly, using eco-friendly ingredients. This is a sample menu: Upon arrival you enjoy a Flute of Jepun rose sparkling wine followed by Broccoli Cream Soup served with a shrimp/broccoli ravioli. Fettuccine al Lemone e Menta, and Orange Zest Salmon served with a splash of orange liquer. Then take a refreshing break with a Kiwi Sorbet Vodka. Also serves good quality expresso coffee. Cafe Jemme on Jl Raya Petitenget. New, clean and modern with airconditioning in the inside sections. Provides organic vegetables, healthy style food, yummy salads, with western influence. Harry Juku is the latest in-place on Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan. Like a few others in this strip there is a definite Australian influence from both the owner and the chef. Chilli Salt & Pepper Squid, a Bento Box for Two [Californian Rolls with seafood and vegetable tempura pieces], a spicy Risotto with turmeric, fish and green peas, a curry of Dry Spicy Beef & Onion or a SHI Pizza layered with roast pumpkin, pine nuts, goats cheese and rocket on a base of garlic and olive oil, are just some of the Mod OZ creations on this menu. divine wonderland Balis new restaurant bar with a unique interior and cool music in the heart of busy Seminyak. Havent been here yet, but here is a review. Jl Laksmana (in the middle of eat street). Phone +62 361730759. Opened in March this year, (owner) De tells that Divine Wonderland was designed to resemble an Old English ladys house, and the concept has been perfectly conceived. The patio is filled with pretty, white wrought iron furniture; the entrance leads into a cluttered parlor; think lounge suites covered in deep burgundy chintz, dark, patterned wall paper, golden brocade drapes, chaise lounges, ornate teak coffee tables, and the kind of knickknacks that grannies love to pop on their mantle pieces. The piano in the corner is just begging for a sing along. The [Slow cooked belly of pork with Malang apple & sultana chutney and wilted spinach] is deservedly one of the most popular items, the crackling is particularly special. The [Herb crusted barramundi] is equally delightful, while the excellent [Ravioli with Goats cheese], features pesto made from local basil that is slightly lighter than the Italian version and has a faint lemony perfume and taste. In homage to the owners Australian roots there is also a perfect [Pavlova] served with warm berries.

Jimbaran Bay
There are heaps of restaurants right on the beach and most will cook to order (you choose fish or lobster from the live tank). Most of the ones we visited were rather overpriced, but the overall experience is worth trying. Buy a bottle or two of wine from your local wine shop (Bintang Supermarket, Bali Deli are some places you can purchase reasonable wine), grab the wine glasses from you hotel or villa and ask your taxi to take you to their best place. Several taxis are on a commission with the restaurants.

Tuban
Batan Waru Tuban: Jln., Kartika Plaza, Tuban. Situated directly in front of the Bali Garden Hotel, the restaurant is vibrant, clean and cool. Try the Indonesian and Bali dishes (dont bother with the international menu), excellent! Plengkung: Jalan Raya Kuta, this is a really cheap, open bale style restaurant. Very busy, local dishes and sambals. Havent eaten here yet, but the reviews are excellent. Its famous for its roasted chicken dish. Bluefin, Jln Kartika Plaza, Japanese Fusion and Lounge. Trendy, great food and cocktails and was very good value. However latest visit in June 08 found the food prices had doubled. Still worth eating at.

Where to go for coffee in Bali:

Bali Deli Jln Kunti, Seminyak, in airconditioning inside or in the garden in a bale. Very popular with trendy Euros. Barocco in Seminyak. New and uses a hand pump expresso machine. Papas, on the beach near Hard Rock Hotel, Jl Pantai Kuta. The Corner, Kuta Poleng Mall, Jl Setiabudi Blok B1, just near the Sanur bypass. Whilst it is a smart clean coffee shop its main claim to fame is as the selling point for a new and complete range of German breads. Cafe Moka: On the main road in Seminyak, about 5 mins walk from Bintang Supermarket on other side of road. Seriously good european coffee and food. Popular with Italians and other european visitors. The old Bali Colada. (currently refurbishing and dont know the name of the new coffee shop). This is on the beach end of the Discovery Plaza Mall, Tuban.
