MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

RECEIVES
THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
The Nobel committee awarded Martin Luther King, Jr. the
Nobel Peace Prize today in Oslo, Norway.
Reverend King, a father of four children, became the youngest
person to receive the prize.

Martin Luther King, JR. was born to Reverend and Mrs.


Martin Luther King, Sr. on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta,
Georgia. He was a very intelligent child and entered
the Yonge Street Elementary School before the age of
six. He later attended Booker T. Washington High
School. Dr. King was able to enter Morehouse College
without graduating from high school because of his high
scores on the college entrance examination. Dr. King
graduated from Morehouse in 1948 and attended Crozier
Theological Seminary where he studied to become a
minister like his father. He received a doctorate
degree in 1955 from Boston University. Dr. King
married Coretta Scott in 1953 and they were the parents
of four children.
Dr. King became involved with the Civil Rights
Movement in America and encouraged African Americans to
stand up for their civil rights. He organized marches
and gave speeches making America aware of the
discrimination African Americans received in America.
Dr. King wrote speeches and six books about the
civil rights of African Americans. He preached nonviolence
and helped African Americans to be treated
with respect. Many Americans did not like his teachings
and Dr. King was killed in Memphis, Tennessee on
April4, 1968. Funeral services were held at the
Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta and Dr. King was
buried in Atlanta at the King Center. He will be
remembered as the leader of the Civil Rights movement
in America.

Childhood
Martin Luther King, Jr., was born on January 15, 1929, in
Atlanta, Georgia. Both his father and grandfather were
ministers. His mother was a schoolteacher who taught him how
to read before he went to school. Martin had a brother, Alfred,
and a sister, Christine.

Young Martin was an excellent student in school; he skipped
grades in both elementary school and high school . He enjoyed
reading books, singing, riding a bicycle, and playing football
