SUPPORT NOTE S05135 HP SYSTEMS INSIGHT MANAGER FOR NONSTOP SYSTEMS 21DEC05 REVISION HISTORY: Initial Publication 21DEC05

SUMMARY: HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) provides infrastructure management for all HP servers and storage. HP NonStop Open System Management (OSM) supports integration with HP SIM, starting with the SPR T0682AAI for G-series release version updates (RVUs) and T0682AAN for H-series RVUs. Starting with H06.04, the NonStop System Console (NSC) CD kit includes an HP SIM CD. This support note discusses the usage model of HP SIM for different customer environments and the NSC models supported for HP SIM installation. DETAIL: HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) is the foundation for the HP unified infrastructure management strategy. It provides infrastructure management for HP ProLiant, Integrity, and HP 9000 servers; HP BladeSystems; and HP StorageWorks MSA, EVA, and XP storage arrays. The major features of HP SIM follow: - Fault monitoring, inventory reporting, and configuration management for HP ProLiant, Integrity, and HP 9000 systems as well as HP StorageWorks MSA, EVA, XP arrays and various third-party arrays via a Web-based GUI or command line. Can be extended with HP ProLiant, Integrity, and Storage Essentials plug-ins. - Base-level management of HP clients and printers. Can be extended with HP Client Management Software and HP Web JetAdmin for more advanced management capabilities. - Notification of and automatic response to prefailure or failure conditions through automated event handling. - Secure, scheduled execution of OS commands, batch files, and custom or off-the-shelf applications across groups of Windows, Linux, or HP-UX systems. - Centralized updates of BIOS, drivers, and agents across multiple ProLiant servers with system software version control. - Secure management through support for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), Secure Shell(SSH), OS authentication, and role-based security. - Installation on Windows, HP-UX, and Linux. For more information on HP SIM, see: http://www.hp.com/go/hpsim OSM supports integration with HP SIM 5.0 (and later), starting with the SPR T0682AAI for G-series RVUs and T0682AAN for H-series RVUs. If this OSM SPR (or later) is installed (with SSL enabled) on a NonStop system, HP SIM can provide this functionality: - Discovery of the NonStop system via WBEM (Web Based Enterprise Management) support provided by OSM. - Display of all alarms created by OSM. - Operator notifications via pager or e-mail when an alarm is created. - Display of the hardware inventory of the NonStop system in SIM data collection reports. - SSL-based connectivity between HP SIM and the NonStop system.

Starting with the H06.04 RVU, the NonStop System Console (NSC) CD kit includes an HP SIM CD. This CD can be used on the NSC to install HP SIM. The only NSC models that are supported for HP SIM installation are S7X-NSC6 and S7X-NSC6NM (and later). HP SIM provides different values to different customer environments. This discussion describes the usage model of HP SIM for different customer environments. Customers With a Mixed System Environment --------------------------------------------------------------------The main value of HP SIM is for customers that have a mixed system environment with NonStop and other HP systems. These customers can use HP SIM to consolidate management of multiple platforms across the enterprise. For these customers, it is preferable to install HP SIM on a dedicated Windows-based server that is outside the NonStop maintenance LAN. This allows platforms that are not within the NonStop maintenance LAN to be managed using the same HP SIM installation. For standard HP SIM server requirements, see: http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11824_div/11824_div.htm l To ensure that HP SIM can access NonStop systems from outside the NonStop maintenance LAN, the maintenance LAN should be connected to the HP SIM console. Customers With a Large Number of NonStop Systems --------------------------------------------------------------------For customers that have 10 to 100s of NonStop systems, HP SIM provides an alternative method of managing NonStop systems from a single display. These customers might find it preferable to install HP SIM on the NSC that is within the NonStop maintenance LAN. The only NSC models that are supported for HP SIM installation are S7X-NSC6 and S7X-NSC6NM (and later). Customers With a Small Number of NonStop Systems --------------------------------------------------------------------For customers that have fewer than 10 NonStop systems, HP SIM does not provide too much value, but it is still supported. These customers can install HP SIM on the NSC that is within the NonStop maintenance LAN. The only NSC models that are supported for HP SIM installation are S7X-NSC6 and S7X-NSC6NM (and later).
