Running head: GRANT OUTLINE PROPOSAL

Grant Outline

1. Multiple Sclerosis- This particular condition I have a deep interest in, because I have Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis is a debilitating condition that affects so many people. A persons own defense system will attack itself. This proposal is to provide a way to help scientist to come up with a cure for this type of condition. According to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation goes on to say, Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, and often a disabling disease that attacks the Central Nervous System, which is the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves (National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2012). Multiple Sclerosis can be fatal, the affects of Multiple Sclerosis is not the same in every patient. Someone who has Multiple Sclerosis experiences so much pain. Their feet are in pain, and their whole entire body is in excruciating pain, and at times the pain is so bad; it will bring tears to a persons eyes, because it is that intense. If there is a cure out there; I think we owe it to the numerous people diagnosed with this debilitating condition. There are over 500,000 people that have Multiple Sclerosis, they may look normal on the outside, but their own bodys defense system is attacking the Central Nervous System. Imagine having Multiple Sclerosis as a part of your everyday life. Imagine your friends requesting for you to come outside in the middle of summer, but you cannot because of what MS does to a person when they go outside in the heat, which I will mentioned this later on in the grant proposal with an in-depth look at what MS sufferers go through.

I.

Name of the Agency- The name of the agency is, The Montel Williams MS Foundation, which is a non-profit organization to help people who are suffering from Multiple Sclerosis.

II.

Discussing my position and why the grant is needed: My position in regards to this grant proposal is one of the many thousands of people suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. There are scientific breakthroughs that occur all the time, but to have a scientific breakthrough in a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. We owe it to ourselves and do the right thing here, and come up the resources to find a cure. Plus, I am the grant writer for the agency I work for.

III.

Main reasons for the grant- The main reason for the grant is to help do my part to do some research on Multiple Sclerosis. Realizing, I am not a scientist, but I have seen firsthand what this debilitating condition does to a person. When I was diagnosed, I had no idea what I was up against.

2. The outline.

a) In depth description of the grant outline- To come up with new treatments or funding for procedures that are not currently being used to win the war against Multiple Sclerosis. I can speak on behalf of all MS sufferers in that we struggle with this daily. When you have a comparison before and after the diagnosis; it weighs heavily on a persons heart knowing they have a condition, and there is no cure for it. Seemingly, it is like a life sentence without the possibility of parole (in the eyes of a violent offender).

3. The detail description of the grant proposal. a. Objective- is to obtain a research grant proposal to help cure Multiple Sclerosis. If Louis Pasteur can discover penicillin, then we can come up with a cure for MS. The objective of the program is to cure Multiple Sclerosis. b. Goals being achieved- If funding is available, and it is approved, the goals are to start a new research in finding different treatment options to stop the progression of this condition. If a person does not take any treatments the progression will be more intense, and the person will start to lose everything associated with Multiple Sclerosis. We hope with the funding we can allow this debilitating condition go into remission, and hope that the debilitating condition does not surface again. Speaking from experience when I say this, when we (MS sufferers take our treatments we are aware of the side effects that are associated with MS). c. Giving hope for people that is suffering for this debilitating condition- We give hope everyday to someone that is unfortunate, whether, it is with some assistance with the normal household bills, or shelter for someone that does not have a home. We are all created equal in the fact, when an American needs help; there are resources out there to help that person. When I mentioned earlier the people that have MS and how their bodies react to heat. According to author, Dr. Julie Stachowiak goes on to say how people that sufferer from MS and how it affects them; the heat intolerance with MS patients shows up as pseudoexacerbation, which it means, the symptoms appear or they may be worse with the MS sufferer dealing the heat exposure (Stachowiak, 2011). The person with MS can have something similar to a relapse in symptoms, and they include the following:

Decreased cognitive function, numbness in the extremities, fatigue, Blurred vision, which is also known as Uhthoffs sign, tremors, and weakness (Stachowiak, 2011).

Funding agencies The first agency is the Department of Defense FY11 Multiple Sclerosis Idea Award- this agency promotes new ideas that maybe in the early stages of Multiple Sclerosis, and the possibility for high-impact for different types of findings, and perhaps, new avenues of investigation (Grants, 2011). The criteria for the following in order to get the award: 1. a person must have innovation (Grants, 2011). 2. Impact: Come up with more research in finding a cure/ treatment for MS (Grants, 2011). 3. Preliminary data: the data would be for the purpose of MS, and the data that is collected from the recipient that came up with the data (Grants, 2011). The award will support a high reward research in the further treatment and cure for MS (Grants, 2011). The second agency is the Multiple Sclerosis Society- this agency will provide funding in the way it will aid people who are diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2011). This agency promotes the following: home and car adaptations, mobility aids, such as wheelchairs and other specialized equipment, driving lessons for a person who has been diagnosed with MS, and/or their career, short breaks, respite care, activities for adult care, hobbies or courses, youth careers with things like music lessons, school function trips, and lastly sports equipment (Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2011). The conversion of 1 pound in the British currency would be equivalent to 1.5673 in American currency, and if a person has more than 8,000 pounds in their currency; that person does not qualify for the grant funding (Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2011).

If one person had 16,000 pounds in British currency that would be equivalent to 19,665.68 in American currency, and the calculation for the other, if a person had 8,000 pounds in British currency, the equivalent would be 9,832.84 in American currency (Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2011) . If a person wanted an activity grant and their British currency were 23,000 in their savings; that would be an equivalent of 28,269.41 in American currency (Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2011). The third and final agency is the MS Research of Australia- this type of agency offers grants, scholarships for the people who are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and the scholarships include: MSRA Vacation, MSRA Postgraduate, NHMRC Betty Cuthbert, and Trish MS Research Foundation (MS Resarch Austraila, 2012). The following two grants are recognized by this agency, and they are as follows: MSRA Project, and the MSRA Incubator (MS Resarch Austraila, 2012). You may be asking yourself, how do you increase your chances to get the funding? A person can increase their chances of getting the funding if they apply to the MSRA, and the National Health and Research Council (MS Resarch Austraila, 2012). However, a certain co-funding scenario may only exist if MSRA receives a completed application by the closing date in order to qualify (MS Resarch Austraila, 2012).

In closing, this particular type of grant has a special place in my heart. The further treatment and cure for MS is growing concern on the thousands of people who are diagnosed with this dreaded auto-immune disease that affects the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves of the person who is suffering. Furthermore, the extensive research in finding a way to slow down the progression of this auto-immune disease is in the utmost of importance. There are a lot of people that struggle

everyday with this condition, and myself included have a hard time completing certain task. There are other procedures out there that can help with someone suffering with Multiple Sclerosis. Prolonging the progression is winning half the battle, and a possible remission to the ones that are in the early stages of MS.
