ATTORNEYS A BEST SOURCE OF GUIDANCE FOR THE CLIENTS

The word attorney is originated from Middle English word, attorney, AngloFrench, attune. An attorney is defined as the one who is legally appointed to transact business on anothers behalf especially LAWYER. Therefore a lawyer can also be named as an attorney. He represents someone else in any of the legal matter this could be something as a trial, or something as simple as a divorce. A person can become attorney simply by passing a bar exam in their home state. However, the more traditional way is to go to a law school, and then study to take the bar. Once the bar is passed, you are able to practice law. After the above discussions we can say that there is no difference between an Attorney and a Lawyer. A member of bar is an attorney or a lawyer. Until you are admitted to the bar you may be a law school graduate but not a lawyer. Its not like solicitor/ barristers, which are different. Lawyer is the most common term but not by much. Attorneys and lawyers are the same thing but there is long precedent for various denotations (based on bar status, contracts vs. trials etc). Most of the people use the term interchangeably therefore, . Lawyer denotes a profession. (I am a lawyer) . Attorney denotes the relationship of a lawyer to his or her client. (As an attorney I represent my clients) there is such a thing as power of attorney. This can be held by anyone whether or not the person is the member of bar. A power of attorney is an authorization by another person (sibling, spouse, and child or business partner) to act on your behalf, sign in your name etc for a specified purpose or purposes. For example, if you are going to be out of a country and an important document needs to be signed personally while you are away from the country, you can normally give a power of attorney to someone else to sign for you. This has nothing to do with the membership in the bar or legal knowledge of any kind. A power of attorney form must include the full name and address of the person giving authorization, as well as the social security member. Include the representatives names, address and what types of matters he is to take care of. Sign and date the form when it is complete.

Attorney at law is another word usually abbreviated in everyday speech to attorney. It is the official name for a lawyer in certain jurisdictions including Sri Lanka, Japan, United States and South Africa. England and Wales the term was also used in England and Wales for lawyers who practiced in common law courts. In 1873, attorneys were reappointed as solicitors which had always been the title for those lawyers who practiced in the court of equity. Attorneys did not generally actually appear as advocates in the high courts, a role reserved (as it still usually is) for barristers.
