Archbishop Jean-Louis Brugus, recently appointed Archivist and Librarian of Holy Roman Church by Benedict XVI, is convinced of this. The non-negotiable consists of the evangelical values that gave rise to the Franciscan-Clarian charism and constitute the foundations of our identity . This is a passage from the concentrated reflection on the timeliness of the Franciscan-Clarian charism, entitled Con lo sguardo fisso sugli inizi, which Fr Jos Rodrguez Carballo, OFM, Minister General of the Friars Minor, has published with a view to 11 August, the Memorial of St Clare of Assisi and the day of the conclusion of the celebrations for the eighth centenary of her consecration. Various celebrations will be taking place at Assisi and at San Damiano, in the Basilica di Santa Chiara and in the Porziuncola. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This week we observe another Marian celebration, the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its original date was May 31, when it was instituted by Pius XII in 1954, but it was eventually moved to August 22 so that its close relationship with the Assumption might be made clear. Marys queenship is multi-dimensional: she reigns gloriously in heaven as queen and mother; she is the queen who intercedes; she is the sign of the Church in its future glory. Of course, the traditions surrounding the Blessed Mothers queenship extend much further back than the establishment of this feast. In the eighth century St. John Damascene could write, When she became Mother of the Creator, she truly became Queen of every creature. According to Jewish tradition, the mother of the king was accorded a seat of honor at the right of the king. With Jesus royal heritage as a descendant and member of the house of David, Mary quite naturally takes her proper place as the queen mother. Pius XII simply recalled these traditions and gave us a day to remind us of how we can direct our prayers to Mary, our Queen.

WE SHARE GODS LIFE NOW

Over the past few weeks, second readings at Sunday Mass have been taken from Pauls letter to the Ephesians. Paul has been providing an ongoing instruction on what it means to live and share Gods life now. Paul was writing to people who lived in the midst of pagan activity. That is why Pauls words are still applicable to us. This is not to say that our world is monstrously evil, that nastiness surrounds us, or that everyone is out to get us. Thats not true. What is true, however, is that times are tough. Our society pressures us to look out for ourselves, to take the best advantage we can, often without giving much thought to the other person. Paul also urges us to take the best advantage we can, but with constant regard for the other person. And the best advantage we can take is to remember that Christ is with usis in usnow.
