Is America Committing National Suicide?

(Part 1 on God and Government) By Micah Winefeld
My heart grieves as I witness the escalating moral collapse and subsequent spiritual decline of America. As I think about all of this, I am reminded of an encounter I had with a man more than 30 years ago while serving as pastor of a church. I met this man after receiving an urgent telephone call from one of my church members concerning a friend who been rushed to the hospital with a life-threatening illness. I was asked if I would go to the hospital to talk with this man because he was not a Christian. I immediately rushed to the hospital, and upon arrival, learned that the gentleman was in the cardiac intensive care unit. Upon arrival at the unit I was ushered to the mans room. I identified myself as a Christian pastor to the medical team. I could see them feverishly working to save the mans life. The doctor in charge introduced himself to me and said: We will move to the other side of the bed and continue with our work. You can speak with this gentleman on the other side of the bed. At this time, he needs you more than he needs us! It was apparent that the doctor was very much aware of the urgency for this man to be spiritually prepared to step into eternity. I was very pleased to find such a response. I quickly made my way to the mans side and identified myself as the pastor of his neighbor. He acknowledged my presence and nodded with approval as I asked him if I could share with him how he could be assured of going to heaven should he die. After sharing the gospel with him, I asked if he would like to confess Christ and give Him his life. I was heartbroken by his response. He said, Not now, I will wait until later. This happened almost 36 years ago and I can remember how my heart ached for this man. My grief intensified after I returned to my office and learned that this man went into eternity after I left the hospital. I realized that unless he changed his mind and followed through

In other words, love of God leads us to love our neighbor, and love of neighbor requires our participation in the culture and in the political process. (R. Albert Mohler Jr, Culture Shift, p. 2) In the Bible, great godly prophet of God, Daniel, provides us with a great example of what Mohler stressed in his book. While living in exile in a pagan culture in Babylon, Daniel was very careful to not allow his surroundings to influence or change his commitment to his God. (Daniel 1:9-21; 6:1-24) As the Lord gave him great wisdom, Daniel accepted the opportunity the Lord gave him to serve in the government of two godless kingdoms. He served as ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and the chief of the governors over all America that the wise men of Babylon. (Danabout to die iel 2:48) Several years later, after people do not the Babylonian Empire was consumed by the Persian Empire, God gave Daniel an opportunity to serve in a very significant role in the administration of the Persian government. (Daniel 6:1-3) It is very obvious that Daniel did not see a conflict in his personal devotion to the Lord and his service to the people as a civil ruler in these pagan government administrations. At times, it was very difficult for him. Daniels life was threatened by some of those in his very own administration. (Daniel 6) While serving God and the people, Daniel received a vision from the Lord concerning the political future of the world. (Daniel 7:1-8; 17-27) Twice in this context, the Spirit of God directed Daniel to write about his personal response to this revelation. Daniel was greatly troubled by all of this and grieved over what these visions told him about the future of his own people. (Daniel 7:15, 28) John Phillips, in his excellent commentary series, writes: Daniels great visions of the future, his grasp of the coming rise and fall of empires, his certain knowledge that his beloved people Israel would be tossed between one world power and another for centuries to come, and his deep sense of shame at Israels past failures and present growing contentment with exile must have saddened Daniel. He saw his countrymen adapting themselves to life in Babylon, adopting the land of their exile as though they were in the land of promise, and it made him weep. (John Phillips, Exploring the Psalms, Psalms 89-150, p. 118)

with the gospel invitation I gave him, he did not enter into the presence of the Lord. He has probably spent the last 36 years in hell, wishing he had given his heart to Christ. At this hour, I feel like I am once again standing by the deathbed of a very dear friend. I have known her all of my life. She is 236, but still too young to die. Her name is America. I love her dearly and do not want her to die. My fellow Americans, you may be in a state of denial about the oncoming death of America. If so, you are just like this man I met who was in denial of his imminent death. However, America is clearly critically ill at this hour. When I speak of the death of America, I am not referring to her complete physical destruction. I am alluding to her passing as the lady of freedom and justice that some of us have known for a few decades of our lives. I fear that the America that I fear that the we all know is about to die and we all know is most of her people do not even realize it. Sadly, some people and most of her probably do not even care! It even realize it. is my opinion that few people have even contemplated what our world would look like if America perishes. As a Christian, my first obligation is to the Lord Jesus Christ and my citizenship in heaven. (Philippians 3:20) My eternal address is in heaven where Jesus has prepared a place for me. (John 14:2-3) However, at this same time, I also have a temporary address here on this earth. And the Bible clearly tells me that it is Gods will for me to be His ambassador while I am living on this earth. (2 Corinthians 5:20) Furthermore, the Bible instructs all Christians to love their neighbors (Romans 13:8-10), have a burden for their own people (Romans 9:1-5; 10:1), render service, honor and support their government (Matthew 22:21; Romans 13:6-7; 1 Peter 2:13-17) and pray for those who have civil authority over them. (1 Timothy 2:1-4) Jesus clearly stated that our greatest priority is to love Him first. He also said the second greatest commandment is to love our neighbor as ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-39) Loving our fellow Americans means we should be concerned about where they will spend eternity, while meeting the needs they have now. Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, comments about all of this in his excellent book, Culture Shift: We love our neighbor because we first love God. In His sovereignty, our Creator has put us within our cultural context in order that we may display His glory by

PTNews, August 2012 (Haggai 2:8) It is the Lords sovereign choice to give wealth to both the godly and ungodly. It is interesting to note that the Lord promised Israel that if they obeyed Him they would be a lending nation, rather than a borrowing nation. (Deuteronomy 28:12) However, He also warned that if they turned away from Him, the opposite would occur. (Deuteronomy 28:44) Many years later, God selected a farmer, the prophet Amos, to be one of His messengers. It was his mission to condemn his people and warn them of the coming divine judgment. The theme of the book of Amos is a nations accountability for its sins. It is most interesting to read the warning that God gave to the godless Jewish people in Amos 4:6-11. Amos warned them that the Lord would send famine, drought, agricultural disasters, physical diseases, wars and devastating natural disasters in an attempt to call the people back to obedience and righteousness. When they failed to take heed of coming judgment, He warned them: Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. (Amos 4:11) On a personal level, it is amazing to see the parallels between Gods judgments that fell upon ancient Israel and what has happened to America over the last few decades. It is my opinion that the Lord is graciously warning America of its ultimate judgment day in His court. And it does not appear to be far away! The founding fathers of America knew what would take place if America turned away from the Lord and become an immoral society. According to Christian historian David Barton, most of the fifty-five founding fathers who worked on the Constitution were members of orthodox Christian churches. (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 3) The founding fathers and the leaders that followed them were very vocal in their commitment to their Christian beliefs. Please consider the following quotes, testimonies and Supreme Court decisions. In his farewell address as president, George Washington said: Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars. Barton comments: Washington believed that if an individual attempted to separate religion and morality from politics, he could not be called an American patriot. (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 8) John Jay, a founding father who became the original Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, said: Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers,

(Matthew 5:16) Not only are we to be the light, we are to speak the truth in love, proclaim the gospel and teach them all things commanded by Christ. (Matthew 28:19-20) In essence, the church is running a spiritual rescue mission on earth, bringing people to salvation in Christ by its lifestyle and message. As a compliment to this, God has created human government to maintain a moral framework of goodness to protect people from evil. (Romans 13:4) Leaders of civil government are ordained of God to be a minister of God. (Romans 13:16) When civil government fulfills its God-ordained role, it will exercise the authority delegated to it by the Lord. That authority should operate within the boundaries of the law of God. There is no other legitimate authority outside of the One who is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe Jesus Christ. He has declared: All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (Matthew 28:18) Please notice that in the context of Romans 13, the Spirit of God directly connects all of this in the verses 8-10. Please take time to read these verses. It is not a coincidence that those who are attempting to reorder our society are in direct opposition to the God of the Bible. Moreover, they object to His commandments, in general, and the Ten Commandments in particular. They may not know it, but all who are opposed to God in government are setting the stage for the final Satanic push in a demonic plot to overthrow God and create the final New World Order, which will be crushed by Christ in the end. Notice how the Psalmist predicted all of this in Psalm 2:1-3: Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. The people of the world and their leaders, as predicted by the Pslamist, are demanding to be to set free from the binding commandments of their Creator. As we approach the November elections in the U.S., it is very important for us to recognize that the most important element of consideration is choosing godly leaders. However, we live in an era where utmost priority is placed upon selecting candidates who espouse the best political policies that could improve our financial future. We must realize that it is God, not man, who controls the wealth of people. The Bible teaches that God controls the wealth of people. The Lord is the One who dispenses wealth and takes it away. (Job 1:21) All wealth belongs to the Lord.

PTNews, August 2012 Numerous components of our current government can be shown to have their source in Biblical concepts. For example, the concept for three branches of government can be found in Isaiah 33:22; the logic for the separation of powers was based on Jeremiah 17:9; the basis for tax exemptions for churches was found in Ezra 7:24; and there are many other examples. (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 10) There was no record of a separation of church and state in the American public school system until a Supreme Court ruling against school prayer on June 25, 1962. This was a new doctrine in America with no support from previous Supreme Court cases. Within 12 months, the Supreme Court also removed the Bible, religious classes, and religious instruction from public school systems. The court gave the following reason for its removal of Bible reading from the Americas public schools. If portions of the New Testament were read without explanation, they could be and had been psychologically harmful to the child. (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 17) All of this was a radical reversal of 170 years of practice in America. In 1980, the Supreme Court heard a case concerning the passive display of the Ten Commandments in the hallways of public schools in Kentucky. The court gave the following ruling: If the posted copies of the Ten Commandments are to have any effect at all, it will be to induce the schoolchildren to read, mediate upon, perhaps venerate and obey the Commandments [This] is not a permissible objective. In other words, they considered it to be unconstitutional for these school children to obey the Ten Commandments! (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 18) Statistics demonstrate that since the early 1960s, when America began to officially turn away from her Biblical heritage, immorality and violence have escalated in our public school systems and in the country in general. Furthermore, scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test [SAT] plummeted after the removal of prayer and Bible from the public schools. Not only did the nation forbid their children to learn about God and His laws of morality in the public arena, but at this same time, the country was introduced to godless entertainment from Hollywood, along with the impact of the message of immorality promoted by

and it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers. (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 7) Jedediah Morse, known as the Father of American Geography, said: To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of freedom, and political and social happiness, which mankind now enjoys Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government and blessings which flow from them must fall with them. James Wilson, one of the signers of the Constitution and an original Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court stated: Human law must rest its authority ultimately upon the authority of the law which is Divine. Far from being rivals or enemies, religion and law are twin sisters, friends, and mutual assistants. The Divine law forms an essential part of both. (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 18) In 1811, the Supreme Court heard a case against a man who made a verbal and written attack against Jesus Christ and the Bible. The court concluded: Whatever strikes at the root of Christianity tends manifestly to the dissolution of civil government. Barton explains their decision as follows: An attack on Jesus Christ was an attack on Christianity; and an attack on Christianity was an attack on the foundation of the country; therefore, an attack on Jesus Christ was equivalent to an attack on the country! This man was sentenced to three months in prison and a $500.00 fine for attacking the country by attacking Jesus! (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, pp. 11-12) In 1854, a group attempted to have Congress remove religion from politics and the military. Both the House and Senate Judiciary Committees gave the following report: At the time of the adoption of the Constitution and amendments, the universal sentiment was that Christianity should be encouraged. In this age, there is no substitute for Christianity. That was the religion of the founders of the republic, and they expected it to remain the religion of their descendants. (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 14) In addition to these quotes, please consider these facts about our national Christian heritage and its historical demise: The Bible was the primer and foundation of American schools for the first 200 years.

PTNews, August 2012 framework of decency that allows us to lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. (1 Timothy 2:2) As mentioned before, we must be motivated by a love for our neighbors that will stimulate us to action for their good, both now and in eternity. This is not a message of a social gospel that loses sight of the desperate need for the salvation of mankind. Our priority is not with the temporary problems and needs of mankind, but we must not neglect the needs of those around us. In many Biblical passages, a compassionate response to someones temporal needs is a measure of the commitment of our faith and/or our response to the more important eternal needs of those around us. (Psalm 82:3-4; Proverbs 19:17; Luke 10:25-37; 1 Timothy 5:8; James 1:27; 1 John 3:1618) Many American believers are disillusioned with the political process in America. They have decided that it is not worth their effort to get involved. However, we might also be discouraged about the failure of marriage in our country, but that does not excuse us from supporting the Biblical view of marriage and promoting it among our family and friends. It is true that the Bible states that the Lord is the One who removes and establishes those in civil government. (Daniel 2:21) However, the Lord is also the One who saves souls and requires that we join Him in His work. It seems to me that it is our moral obligation to exercise our privilege to vote for the candidates that will promote and defend the laws that are the closest to glorifying God and honor the eternal moral standards of our holy God. The great revivalist, Charles Finney, once said: The church must take right ground in regard to politics. Politics are part of a religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to the country as part of their duty to God. .. He [God] will bless or curse this nation, according to the course they [Christians] take in [politics]. (David Barton, Americas Godly Heritage, p. 29)

the powerful music industry. A growing introduction of newer technologies increased the infusion of immorality, violence, and rebellion into the homes and minds of most Americans. All of this has happened with the absence of the Bible in schools and the departure of sound Biblical teaching in most local churches. What is the result of all of this? Read Romans 1:18-32. This text is a divine commentary on what happens to societies that have known God, but choose to not glorify Him and give Him His honorable place in peoples lives and its institutions. In such a society, people turn from the Bible and do not like to retain God in their knowledge. (Romans 1:28) These societies lose their moral compass (conscience), move toward intellectual foolishness, become spiritual pagans, openly embrace sexual perversions, and are consumed with a pleasure madness that leads to self-destruction. My friends, America is committing national suicide at this hour and the church is standing idle and dumbfounded like it either does not care, or know what to do. Part of the problem is that many of the professing Christians, including their leadership, are immersed in this escalating immorality and departure from God. The first order of business is REPENTANCE! It needs to start with leadership and filter down into the pews, youth groups and Sunday School classes of our churches. If the church would read, study, and obey 1 Peter 1:13-2:3, there could be hope for a real revival in America. This is Americas only hope! The greatest need is not a better economy! The problem is in the church. We are the light! The revival of the church is only part of the solution. It is my opinion that we also need to pray for the Lord to raise up godly men to serve the Lord in government, from the local to the national level. The church has been wrong to ignore and avoid the subject of government and politics. Once again, read Romans 13:1-4. Government officials are ordained of God to keep the peace and provide a
