conversaciones que
escucho a m alrededor

regreso a clases: que si
tengo que comenzar a
comprar los uniformes,
que solo faltan tantas
semanas, que si no se
qu maestro me va
a tocar este ao, que
hay que aprovechar lo que queda del
verano, que si por ah viene el frio.
Obviamente estamos transicionando y
entrando a una nueva temporada la
temporada de otoo en Rochester que
es tambin nuestra temporada escolar.
Para ayudar a los padres, nos dimos
a la tarea de buscar informacin
escolar y presentarlas en esta edicin
del peridico. Nos concentramos
en el Distrito Escolar de Rochester,
pero bien sabemos que hay muchos
recursos encontrados en el internet
con informacin para los estudiantes y
padres de todos los distritos en nuestro
alrededor. Ida Prez, una de nuestras

Most of the conversaons that I hear
around me have to do with back to
school: I have to start to buy uniforms,
there are only so many weeks le
before school begins, who will be my
school teachers this year, I need to
take advantage of what remains of
the summer, it will start ge ng cold
soon, and so forth. Obviously, we are
transioning to a new season... the fall
season in Rochester, which is also our
school season.
We realize the task of searching for
school informaon so to help parents
out we included some resources in
this edion of the newspaper. We
focused on the Rochester City School
District but there is certainly other
great resources found on the internet
for other school districts, including
the suburbs. Ida Perez, one of our
columnists, also oers a few ps to
establish rounes that help prepare
children for back to school.
Besides school starng soon, Hispanic
Heritage Month also approaches.

Care Council Inc. has promoted Hector
Sanago to the posion of Lano
services coordinator.

In his new role, Sanago will help ensure
that Child Care Council communicates
eecvely with limited English-
procient individuals. In addion, he
will facilitate and coordinate access
to training classes and programs for
uent-Spanish-speaking child care
providers. Sanago brings 14 years of
experience working with children to his
new posion.
Hector Sanago previously served as
a legally exempt enrollment specialist,
family day care registrar and Child
and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)
specialist at the Council. He earned
his bachelors degree in Elementary
Educaon from the University of
Puerto Rico in Ponce. A Rochester,
N.Y. resident, he is a member of the
Naonal Associaon for Family Child
Care and a volunteer with AIDS Care.

for children. It can improve memory
and comprehension, develop study
skills, and teach children how to
manage me. You can help by making

assistance, but not complete answers.
Shopping for School Supplies
During the month of August, some
states oer a sales tax holiday, which
means that certain products wont be

back-to-school items including clothes,

As you prepare to send your children
back to school, remember that

Mundo Muestra de Amor
Esta acvidad se llevo a cabo el 4 de agosto, en el parque Don Samuel Torres
en la Avenida Clinton Norte, a donde se reparo gratuitamente ropa, zapatos,
tratados y hot dog a toda la comunidad que se dio cita en dicho lugar. Tambien
se sortearon cercados redimibles en restaurantes, salones de bellezas y DVDs.
Los presidentes de la emisora de Radio de la Luz del Mundo, Mignelys Cruz y
Diego Cruz, agradecen la presencia y el respaldo del Rev. Leoncio Pia y Herda
Casllo de la Iglesia Centro Evangelisco Familiar; el Pastor Joey Reyes del

RECETA DEL
BARRIO
NEI GHBORHOOD RECI PE
INGREDIENTES:
1 1/2 lb de lete bacalao desmenuzado (sin
espinas)
1 1/2 tz de harina
1 cdta polvo de hornear
1 1/2 tz agua
1 sobre de sazn
2 cdta de sofrito
Aceite para frer
PROCEDIMIENTO:
Tome el bacalao desmenuzado y chelo a
hervir en una olla con agua; luego rerelo
del agua y eche el bacalao en un recipiente
en agua fra durante 1/2 hora.
Proceda a mezclar la harina con todos
los ingredientes (incluyendo el bacalao) y
agregue agua hasta que quede espeso. En
un sartn con el aceite caliente, use una
cuchara de sopa y vierta la mezcla. Djala
dorar por ambos lados. Cuando vaya
sacando los bacalatos del sartn, pngalo
en un recipiente con una servilleta para
que absorba la grasa. Djelos refrescar
por unos segundos y a comer!

1 1/2 cups of our
1 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 cups of water
1 package of sazon
2 tsps. of sofrito
Oil for frying

PROCEDURE:
Pour water in a pot with the codsh and let
it boil. Rinse the codsh out of this pot and
place it in a bowl with cold water for 1/2 hour.
Mix the our with all the ingredients
(including the codsh) and add water unl
it thickens. In a skillet with hot oil, use a
tablespoon to pour the mixture and let it
brown on both sides. As you remove the
friers from the skillet, place them in a
dish with a napkin to absorb the grease.
Let them cool for a few seconds and enjoy!

illegal immigrants than previously
thought could qualify for deferred
deportaon when President Barack
Obamas new policy takes eect August
15.
The private instutes U.S. Immigraon
Policy Program said Tuesday that as
many as 1.76 million people could
benet from the Deferred Acon for
Childhood Arrival program. In June, the
instute said an esmated 1.4 million
immigrants could be eligible.
Under the program, students currently
enrolled in school could be granted a
two-year reprieve from deportaon
if they can show they came to the
U.S. under age 16; lived there for ve
years and have not been convicted of
certain crimes. Previously, the program
was open only to those who have
graduated high school, received a GED
or honorably le the military.

the country get their children ready for
the new school year. Its a good me
to get the kids up to date with their
immunizaons, and to buy the supplies
they need for school.
In the rush to get everything ready for
their kids, parents might forget that
they might benet from going back to
school too. The federal government
oers aordable adult educaon
classes and programs throughout the
United States.
Most classes and programs are free, and
are oered in locaons like community
centers, public schools and community
colleges. Government-sponsored adult
educaon classes include:
GED preparaon. A GED diploma is
equivalent to a high school diploma
and is essenal for ge ng a beer
job. Several adult educaon programs
oer prep classes to help you get a GED
diploma. These programs teach basic
algebra, physics, civics, and history and
are ideal for people who didnt nish
high school. You can nd the nearest
GED tesng center by typing in your ZIP
code at gedtesngservice.com.
Career and technical educaon.
Adult educaon classes and programs
can also help you get praccal
educaon and training through work
cercaons. You can take classes
on plumbing, o ce administraon,
electronics, mechanics, carpentry,
health and even computers. Some of
these classes are developed with local
employers to help students develop
skills that local employers need.
English classes. These classes are
designed for adults who want to learn
how to speak, read or write in English.
There are courses for beginners and
advanced students, but also for nave
speakers who would like to improve
their English skills. If you enroll in these
classes you might have to take a test
to determine your level of prociency.
These classes oer exible schedules
to accommodate people who work and
have family obligaons.
Cizenship classes. If you are a legal
permanent resident and are trying to
become a U.S. cizen, you might be
interested in taking a cizenship prep
class at your local adult school. These
classes oer everything you need to
know to take the history and civics
tests required by the U.S. Cizenship
and Immigraon Services. You will also
have the opportunity to pracce the
required cizenship interview.
Educaon orientaon and help for
disabled students. Adult educaon
schools are staed with counselors
who can help students gure out which
classes to take and which cercaons
may help them get a beer job. They
also have tools to help people with
disabilies access classes and programs
to take full advantage of the resources
available.

codiana. Dicha runa les ayudar a
comenzar el nuevo ao escolar bien.
Usted puede preguntarse por qu las
runas son tan importantes. La ms
importante consiste en que las runas
ayudan a un nio a desarrollar la conanza
en ellos mismos. Cuando un nio establece
una runa y sabe lo que es esperado de
el/ella y sabe cunto se espera de el/ella
para completar el trabajo, esto le ayuda a
manejar su empo y comportamiento.
Las runas pueden incluir runas simples
como runas matunas, despus de
escuela, comida, antes de irse a la cama,
incluyendo tales acontecimientos como
empo de familia, trabajo de casa,
acontecimientos de deportes, etc. Planee
su semana con adelanto e incluya citas y
otras acvidades que no intereren con
sus runas codianas. Cuando usted ene
runas ello no slo benecia a los nios,
pero la familia tambin, y hay menos
tensin y cada uno est listo.

aprender y mantener hbitos sanos.

Runas Matunas. Las maanas pueden
ser muy agitadas pero si usted manene
una runa se le har ms fcil a cada uno

pueden ayudar a los nios a entender
como manejar su empo.
Runas de Cena. Las runas de la hora de
la cena son muy importante. Este es un
buen empo a dnde las familias pueden
venir juntos y hablar de su da. Esta runa
puede ayudar a un nio a entender la
importancia de relacionarse con otro y
aprender modales en la mesa.
Runas de la Hora Antes de Acostarse.
Esta runa puede incluir el cepillado de
sus dientes, preparar la ropa para el da
siguiente, organizar los bolsos escolares,
etc. En n todo lo que ayude a preparar las
cosas para el da siguiente y an tener un
empo para la lectura de un cuento antes

su familia. Aunque las runas puedan

y estabilidad.

deberes y sin mites, ellos crecen de una
manera incontrolada y dicil de manejar.
Nuestra responsabilidad ms grande
como padres es proporcionar un ambiente
estructurado y a la vez amoroso en el cual
nuestros nios puedan prepararse en la
vida para cuando ellos sean adultos. Es
crco que esmulemos sus mentes,
habilidades sociales, emociones mientras
sus cuerpos tambin crecen. Las runas
juegan una parte integrante, asegurando
que los nios enendan, reconozcan sus
deberes y reciban el cario y el cuido que
es tan importante para ellos.

This summer has been hot and fun for
everyone. Due to the nice weather and
extended daylight, Ive seen kids at water
parks and swimming pools trying to stay
cool more this summer than in years past.
But summer is winding down and school
is soon to start. So parents need to help
their children get back on track with a daily
roune that will help them start the new
school year right.
You may ask why rounes are so important.
The most important thing is that rounes
help a child build condence in themselves.
When a child has a roune established and
knows what is expected out of them and
how long they have to get the job done, it
will help them to manage their me and
behavior.
Rounes can include simple rounes such
as morning, aer school, dinner, before
bed to including such events as family
me, house work, sports events, etc. Plan
your week ahead of me and include
appointments and other acvies that
dont interfere with your daily rounes.
When you have rounes it not only benets
the children but the family as well, for there
is less stress and everyone is prepared.
A daily roune creates predictability.
Predictability reduces anxiety and allows
a child to feel calm and in control. A calm
child is usually a happier child which in
turn makes for calmer, happier parents. It
develops a sense of connuity and security
for the child.
According to the Center on the Social
and Emoonal Foundaons for Early
Learning, studies have documented
that schedules and rounes inuence
childrens emoonal, cognive, and social
development. Predictable and consistent
schedules in preschool classrooms help
children feel secure and comfortable.
Also, schedules and rounes help children
understand the expectaons of the
environment and reduce the frequency
of behavior problems, such as tantrums
and acts of aggression. Other benets are
increased performance at school, sense of
self-security, ability to work in organized
ways and the ability to learn and keep
healthy habits.
Here is a list of some daily rounes for
children and how they benet from them:
Morning Rounes. Mornings can be very
hecc for everyone, but if you have your
roune in place it will make it easier on
everyone to get their day o to a good
start. How you feel in the morning usually
lays the foundaon for your day. If you
wake to having to rush around to nd
clothes, book bags, etc. and rushing to get
a lile breakfast before being pushed out
the door, youre going to feel unhappy,
aggravated and totally stressed. Feeling
this way is not a good way to start your day.
Aer-School Rounes. This me can be
set to give a child me to get a snack and
refresh. Aer-school rounes could include
snack, refresh me, chores, outdoor
play and allowed me for homework.
Aer-school rounes can help children
understand how to manage their me.
Dinner Rounes. Dinner rounes are very
important. This is the me of day when
families can come together and discuss
their day. This roune can help a child
understand the importance of interacng
with others and learn table manners.
Before Bedme Rounes. This roune can
include brushing your teeth, laying out
clothes, book bags, etc., whatever you may
need to start your next day, to reading a
story together. Building a bedme roune
will help your child in learning how to be
prepared and the importance of a good
nights rest.
Every family is dierent, and should
build rounes that work for their family.
Although rounes may be dierent for
each family, they all sll teach our children
the same thing and that is, condence and
stability.
When children grow up without rounes,
dues and limits, they grow up in an
uncontrolled manner and become di cult
to manage. Our biggest responsibility as
parents is to provide a structured and
nurturing environment in which our
children can become prepared for life as
an adult. It is crical that we smulate our
childrens minds, social skills, emoons
and bodies. Rounes play an integral part
in this smulaon, ensuring that children
understand and embrace their dues and
receive the nurturing and care that is so
important to them.
Consistent rounes are an eecve
tool that parents can use to prepare
their children for life, and to accomplish
the smulaon and teaching that is so
important to their development. So start
the new school year on the right track,
start a daily roune with your child if you
never had one or make sure to go back
to the one you had before the summer
started. Daily rounes make take a while
to accomplish so be consistent because in
the long run it will benet everyone in the
family. Remember, you are your childs rst
teacher and best advocate.

Mientras estaba
de vacaciones
con mis hijos y mi
sobrina en Miami, Florida, fuimos a South
Beach a darnos un chapuzn en la playa.
Mientras mi hijo David se qued en la orilla,
mi hijo Danny, mi sobrina Anne Marie y yo
nos montamos en un tubo de goma de
carro inado y estbamos otando en las
cristalinas y tranquilas aguas del Ocano
Atlnco.
En cierto momento, mi hijo y mi sobrina
decidieron bajarse del tubo, pero yo no.
Luego de varios minutos decido bajarme.
Inmediatamente me di cuenta que estaba
en aprietos.
El asunto es que yo no s nadar. Me da
vergenza admirlo, pero es la verdad.
Jams aprend.
En cuanto ca al agua, me fui directo al
fondo; en lo que me pareci una inmersin
de 20 pies de profundidad.
Recuerdo llegar al fondo del mar y volver
a subir.
Cuando llegaba a la supercie era por unos
2 o 3 segundos como mximo. Mi cabeza
apenas estaba justo por encima del agua
mientras trataba de tomar aire, mirando

tubo de goma de carro a unos 10 pies de

revs, se me resbal de las manos y volv
a hundirme.
Fue en ese momento que me sen
sumamente fagado y me sobrevino una
extraa, casi escalofriante, sensacin de
paz.
La sensacin de paz de quien ene la
certeza que va a morir, este iba a ser mi
nal.
Entonces las caras de mis hijos empezaron
a destellar en mi mente.
Recuerdo ver a mi hija de 3 aos, la hermosa
cara de Isabella y pens que no llegara a
ver su graduacin o su matrimonio o su
familia.
Recuerdo ver las caras de mi hijo y sobrina
y pens en cuanto los amaba, y como iba a
morir justo en sus vacaciones.
Me estaba hundiendo, pero era diferente a
las otras veces.
Estaba cayendo de espaldas y ya no tena
fuerzas para luchar.
Poda ver el resplandor del sol a travs del
agua encima de m, mientras me hunda
cada vez ms.
Recuerdo un gran silencio.
Recuerdo cerrar los ojos.
No sen nada excepto silencio por un
empo.
De repente sen un golpe en la espalda.
Y pude senr unas manos que me agarraron
y me halaron hasta la supercie.
Estaba de espaldas, lo nico que poda
ver era el cielo azul y las caras de varios
hombres que me dijeron Ests a salvo.
Hace 3 aos un carro me impact.
Ayer por poco me ahogo.
Me imagino que Dios ene un plan para m.

On Wednesday July 18th, 2012, I almost
died.
While in Miami, Florida on vacaon with
my sons and my niece, we went to South
Beach for some fun in the water.
While my son David stayed on the sand, my
son Danny, my niece Anne Marie and I got
on an inner tube and were oang on the
clear, calm waters of the Atlanc Ocean.
At one point, my son and my niece got o
the tube, and I remained on.
Aer a few minutes, I decided to get o.
As soon as I did, I immediately knew I was
in trouble.
You see, I dont know how to swim. Its
embarrassing to admit this, but its the
truth. I never learned how to.
I sank straight down as soon as I hit the
water; it had to be at least a 20 foot drop.
I then recall hi ng the boom of the ocean
oor, and bouncing back up.
When I surfaced it was only for 2-3 seconds
at most. My head was barely above water
as I gasped for air trying to see who was
around, as I yelled Help!
I could see my son and my niece and the
inner tube oang about 10 feet away.
I tried to reach for it but couldnt reach it.
I sank back down again.
I remember swallowing large amounts of
water, each me I gasped for air, before
sinking once again.
This went on for several minutes. With
each me I re-surfaced and sank again, I
swallowed more and more water.
Each me I came back up, I recall thinking
why isnt anyone coming to save me.
Could they see me?
Could they hear my cries for help?
At one point I saw that the inner tube
was close enough for me to reach, I tried
grabbing it, but it slipped away.
The next me I re-surfaced, I was able to
grab the tube again, but this me it ipped
upside down, and once again I couldnt get
a grip on it, and down I went again.
It was at this point where I remember
feeling extremely exhausted and a strange,
eerie, yet almost peaceful feeling set in.
One of feeling of peace was the fact that
I was going to die; that this is how it was
going to end for me.
It was also at this point when my childrens
faces started to ash in my mind.
I remember seeing my 3 year old daughter,
Isabellas beauful face and thinking I
would not get to see her graduate school
or get married and start a family of her
own.
I remember seeing my sons and my
nieces faces and thinking how much I love
them, and how I was going to die on their
vacaon.
I was sinking at this me, only dierent
than the other mes.
I was falling backwards and there was no
more ght le in me.
I could see the sun shining through the
water above me as I sank deeper and
deeper.
I remember everything was quiet.
I remember closing my eyes.
Then nothing but quiet for a bit.
Then I felt a hit from behind.
And I could feel hands grabbing me and
pulling me back up to the surface.
I was on my back and all I could see was the
blue sky and several mens faces telling me
We got you.
Three years ago I was hit by car.
Yesterday I almost drowned.
I guess God has a plan for me.

son tan complejas en trmino de
la siologa, la relacin de ste
con el ambiente y los mecansmos
de adaptacin (homeostastasis/
equilibrio). Mucho se ha estudiado,
y hay mucho por descubrir todava.
Muchos estarn de acuerdo en que
la ciencia, la medicina y la salud no
son tan simples como tratamos de
imaginarla, y nos gustara que fuera.
Pero uno de los datos ms fascinantes
para m, sobre el cuerpo humano
es cmo dentro de los primeros 18
das despus de la concepcin uno
de los ms importantes sistemas del
cuerpo, (si no el ms importante) del
sistema nervioso central, comienza a
desarrollarse.
Evoluciona para rodear y formar un
sistema de comunicacin de 45 millas
de los nervios o ms, entre el cerebro
y el cuerpo. El sistema nervioso es el
responsable de ms de 100,000 lados
del corazn en un da, de ms de 20,000
respiraciones y es responsable de la
comunicacin entre unos 7 millones
de clulas cerebrales. El cerebro y
la mdula espinal son los rganos
principales del sistema nervioso, y
estn cubiertos por estructuras seas
protectoras: el crneo que protege
al cerebro y la columna vertebral que
protege la mdula espinal y la salida de

dolor (nocicepcin), as como en
muchas otras funciones corporales a
travs de la comunicacin especializada
de la parte autonmica del sistema
nervioso. Disminucin o movimientos
inadequados de las arculaciones
de la columna vertebral (conocidas
como subluxaciones las cuales pueden
pueden exisr con o sin dolor) pueden
disminuir el sendo de la posicin y el
equilibrio del cuerpo. Esto limita a su
vez, la informacin que se transmite
al cerebro y sus diferentes partes para
que este reaccione y envie informacion
relevante al resto del cuerpo y para
que reaccione de acuerdo al ambiente.
Pero nuestro cerebro no solamente
maneja el cuerpo como un dictador
ni el cuerpo reacciona en forma
sumisa. Lo que el cerebro comunica
al cuerpo depende de la informacin
que el cuerpo ha enviado al cerebro y
viceversa. Esto implica que pensamos
con nuestros cuerpos!
Segn un estudio publicado en la revista
Spine cuando unas arculaciones
de la columna fueron bloqueadas
por medio de ciruga, se observ
una disminucin en las sensaciones
enviadas al cerebro. Luego, cuando
esta misma arculacin fue esrada,
encontraron que habia esmulacin en
diversas reas del cerebro (incluyendo
areas del cerebro que enen un
efecto en la regulacin del sistema
imunolgico). Esto es evidencia de
como la falta de movimiento en
arculaciones de la columna puede
disminuir la percepcin del cerebro
y como el movimiento, esramiento
y aun el ajuste quiroprcco puede
potencialmente esmular diferentes
areas del cerebro resultando en un
efecto posivo para la salud en general.
En conclusin, las subluxaciones
podran afectar el bienestar y estas
pueden considerarse como un factor

Our human bodys funcons are so
complex in terms of its physiology,
relaonship with the environment
and homeostasis mechanisms. A lot
has been studied, and a lot is to be
discovered sll. Many will agree that
science, medicine and health are not
as simple as we try to picture it and
would like it to be. But one of the
most fascinang facts to me, about
the human body is how within the
rst 18 days aer concepon one of
the most important body systems, (if
not the most important) the Central
Nervous System, starts to develop. It
evolves to surround a communicaon
system of 45 miles of nerves or more,
between the brain and the body. The
nervous system is responsible for over
100,000 heart beats in a day, for over
20,000 breaths and for communicang
and exercising about 7 million brain
cells. The nervous system main organs;
brain and spinal cord are encased
in a protecve bone structures: the
skull which protects the brain and the
vertebral column protecng the spinal
cord and the exit of the spinal nerves
that come of the spinal cord towards
the rest of the body.
The chiropracc vitalisc view focuses
on the fact that our spine or vertebral
column is an important channel
of communicaon and protecon
of the nervous system. Therefore,
improper bio-mechanics or body/
boney mechanics (also know as
subluxaons) - can negavely impact

Decreased or abnormal moon of
the joints in the spine (subluxaons)
which can exist with or without pain
will decrease the sense of posion and
equilibrium of the body. This limits the
informaon that should be sent into
the brain and its structures and also
the informaon that the brain should
send to coordinate body funcons and
react to the environment.
But our brain doesnt just manage the
body as a dictator would nor the body
follows in a submissive way. What
the brain communicates to the body
depends on what informaon the body
has sent to the brain and vice-versa.
This implies that we think with our
bodies!
According to a study published in the
journal Spine- when a vertebral spinal
joint was surgically blocked, there was
a decrease in the sensaons sent to
the brain. Later, when this same joint
in the spine was stretched, smulaon
to the various brain areas were
recorded (including areas of the brain
that help to regulate immune system
funcons). This is evidence on how lack
of moon will diminish the perceived
informaon of our brain from the spine
and how mobilizaon, stretching and
even chiropracc adjustments could
potenally smulate dierent areas of
our brain aecng the overall health of
an individual in a posive way.
In conclusion, proper moon of the
spinal joints and smulaon of them
thought the adjustments will smulate
the brain and the nervous system to

Leer y discur acerca de la novela de El libro
de la risa y el olvido, nos llevo a revalorar
nuestro papel como individuos dentro de
una sociedad, que deja ver el descontento
y la alegra como un ingrediente agridulce.
Muchas veces encierra omisiones que nos
evitan descifrar muchos signicados del
pasado.
Milan Kundera nos dio con este libro, un
tesmonio novelado y teido de un fuerte
descontento social a donde acusa a la
sociedad socialista de represora en 1978.
Esta postura crca nos mostro que ver
nuestro pasado histrico sin maquillaje,
es alternava vital para reconstruir una
idendad social con un mejor pronosco.
Las obras de Kundera siempre estuvieron
cargadas de comentarios crcos en
contra del gobierno y trajeron serias
consecuencias en su vida profesional,
siendo este libro la razn por la que
perdi su nacionalidad checa. La novela
despert una gran polmica dentro de
nuestro grupo de lectores ya que con pena
y sarcasmo tuvimos que aceptar unas
realidades. Entendemos que tambin
en nuestros pases se trata de disfrazar
la verdad polca con la risa del folklor y
una falsa fantasa - promueven dar una
libertad que venden a travs de medios
de comunicacin comprados en una gran
diversidad de pases.
Resulto interesante ver como esta obra,
invit a que la discusin se tornara con
un maz tan polizado. El discur la
problemca polca de los pases de
origen, result doloroso y despert fuertes
senmientos de impotencia, como los que
se dejan ver en esta obra: experiencias
similares vividas por muchas integrantes
de El Cafecito Literario. Incluso, se abri
la posibilidad de hablar de la percepcin
inmigrante, que predomina en el grupo
donde se vive esa metamorfosis cultural,
acompaada de muchos mecanismos de
defensa. Especialmente, ante el dolor
que representa integrar una cultura
aparentemente ausente pero que sigue
presente y que forma parte de la idendad.
Milan Kundera, habla en el libro de una
expresin ulizada en Checoslovaquia
llamada litost denido como un concepto
inmenso como un acorden extendido,
que al ser pronunciado da el sonido de
un perro abandonado, que representa
un conjunto de senmientos dolorosos y
vergonzosos.
En la reunin de El Cafecito Literario
se compareron y analizaron los
ejemplo referidos en el libro, as como
los senmientos experimentados al
confrontar la realidad social de muchos
pases de origen de los integrantes. Sin
embargo, concluimos que los valores
culturales con los que se crece fungen
como parmetro para futuras bsquedas
de equilibrio social. Armamos que al
enfrentarnos a recuerdos que no nos
gustan tambin podremos ser capaces de
encontrar una direccin para mejorar esas
carencias, que pueden ser corregidas con
respuestas ms aservas que el olvido o
el invento de un falso pasado.
Los personajes de la novela, son como
notas de una gran sinfona que es la vida
en s, donde cada ser clama por aquello
que considera irremplazable, tratando de
compensarlo en la frivolidad del momento;
la mayora de las veces desemboca en
el olvido pero tambin nos arrastra al
deterioro. Encontramos a Kundera,
reejado claramente en el personaje de
Tamina ya que es quien experimenta el
exilio aunado a senmientos de nostalgia,
temor y culpa. Tamina toma la postura de
no hablar ms de s misma por una larga
temporada pero luego decide escribir un
libro acerca de su modo de ver el mundo
como un medio para verse a s misma,
como una defensa ante la indiferencia de
aquellos seres cercanos pero distantes, a
quienes quiere expresar su senr.
Encontramos, que esta necesidad de reejar
lo que somos, nos hace portadores de voces
diversas, que en momentos proyectaran
la ilusin de lo que creen recordar de
s mismas, pero debido al olvido, solo
proyectaran un holograma ambiguo y por
ende generador de confusin y un mayor
descontento. Sin embargo, no debemos
detener la bsqueda del equilibrio entre lo
que fuimos y lo que deseamos ser, el nico
medio es dar voz a lo que somos en el
presente, sin perder nuestro espritu crco
en ningn momento.

could be an overwhelming stage
for both parents and students. It is
also an excing me of learning, of
reconnecng with friends/educaonal

with new hopes. The good news is that
there are many resources in Rochester
to steer and guide us on how to register
a child, learn of important events that
are available on the school calendar
and so forth. There is a lot of great
informaon that comes in handy when
parents are in the midst of making a lot

in turn it will be assist them in leading

two Bilingual Home School Assistants.

Quinones have been working at this

1 - El cuento ene muchas palabras que son claves para la historia. Algunas de ellas
se repiten muchas veces y otras no. Tambin hay algunas con su signicado en ingles.
Subraya en el texto estas palabras y luego haz oraciones con ellas.
Ahora, te animas a hacer una nueva historia con estas palabras?
2 - Los tapices son telas especiales de diferentes tamaos con dibujos que cuentan una
historia. Se bordan (no se pintan) con hilos de diferentes colores y se cuelgan como si
fueran cuadros.
Alguna vez tuviste la oportunidad de ver un tapiz?
Si no enes la oportunidad de ir a un museo, puedes ver diferentes pos de tapices de
un libro, revistas o fotos.
3- Hay alguien en tu casa o que t conozcas que haya bordado un tapiz, un cuadro o
algo parecido? Si la respuesta es armava, pregunta a esa persona por qu lo bord
y el signicado que ene.
4 - Si tuvieras la oportunidad de pensar en un tapiz, cmo sera?, qu colores
tendra?, sera grande o pequeo?
5 - Qu historia contara t tapiz? Piensa detenidamente en los detalles de tu propia
historia.
Invita a tu familia para que te ayuden a contar la historia. Te aseguro que todos ustedes
tendrn mucha diversin.

I MAGI NANDO TU PROPI O LI BRO
Cuando era pequea me gustaba mucho ir a los museos. Un mundo maravilloso, donde poda estar mucho
empo, imaginando lo que haban querido decir los arstas cuando haban creado sus obras. Y una de mis
obras favoritas era un tapiz muy grande que representaba a un unicornio blanco en un bosque fantsco.
Los museos son lugares increbles para desarrollar nuestra imaginacin, pero en realidad todo lo que nos rodea
ene el mismo efecto. La imaginacin est a la vuelta de la esquina esperndonos.
Hoy te propongo a que escribas tu propio libro sobre algo que hayas visto (por ejemplo un tapiz) y que sea importante para .
Para ayudarte con tu imaginacin, he creado este pequeo cuento, que espero te ayude con tu sueo.
Comenzamos?
EL UNI CORNI O DEL TAPI Z
Desde hace mucho empo, la historia cuenta que en una erra muy lejana, en un bosque encantado, un mago (magician) lloraba porque estaba muy solo. A pesar
de su magia, l no poda encontrar ningn amigo en su mundo encantado.
El mago, aunque no era malo, siempre quera hacer su voluntad, y eso alejaba de l a todos los seres que vivan en su mundo. La luna y las estrellas, sus nicas
amigas, cada noche, lo acompaaban y le contaban lo que suceda en su bosque (forest).
La parte favorita del mago era cuando las estrellas le hablaban sobre el unicornio (unicorn) blanco, tan hermoso, tan bello, pero tan solo. As que el mago, lleno de
curiosidad, pregunto a la luna, qu tena que hacer para acercarse al unicornio.
Primero y ante todo, el mago tena que aprender a cantar muy bien, porque a los unicornios les encanta que le canten dulcemente. Y aunque el mago era un gran
mago, no saba cantar muy bien; as que no tuvo ms remedio que praccar y praccar con la ayuda de las estrellas, y sin pensarlo aprendi a tener paciencia.
Despus el mago tendra que aprender a controlar sus palabras, algo muy dicil en un mago que quiere hacer su santa voluntad. Pero la luna le cont el truco (trick)
del nmero siete.
-Y eso qu es? - pregunt el mago.
-Consiste en mover la lengua siete veces dentro de la boca, antes de pronunciar una palabra; eso te ayudar a pensar - respondi la luna.
-Imposible! Para eso yo tengo una varita mgica (magic wand), para hacer lo que quiera - dijo el mago.
Y fue una tarde, que caminando por el bosque, el mago se encontr con el unicornio. Entonces comenz a cantar tan dulcemente, que el unicornio se qued muy
quieto, esperando algo ms. El mago pregunt al unicornio si saba quin era l, y el unicornio dijo que no. El mago enojado por la respuesta, estuvo a punto de
decir cosas desagradables, pero recordando el consejo de la luna, uliz el truco del nmero siete.
El mago y el unicornio, tardaron un empo en ser amigos; y cuando al n lo lograron, el mago uliz el poder de su varita mgica para contar esta historia en un
tapiz tan grande, tan bello y lleno de armona, como la amistad de ellos dos.
Ahora es el turno de usar lpices de
colores, crayones, papel, alegra y toda
t imaginacin para comenzar tu propio
libro. Y lo mejor de todo es que t eres el
propio autor de tu obra.

El Rev. David Valle nos concedi una
entrevista, donde nos habla de su vida,
su nueva iglesia y tambin de un gran
reconocimiento que impacto su carrera.
Hblenos un poquito de su vida, donde
naci, de donde es su familia?
Soy nacido en la ciudad de Nueva York
de una familia puertorriquea buscando
el mejoramiento para sus hijos. Mi padre
es de Aguadilla, y mi madre de Mana,
Puerto Rico. Juntos criaron a 4 varones y 3
hembras. Me considero puertorriqueo de
ciudadana americana.
Cmo llego a Rochester?
Yo llegue a la ciudad de Rochester en 1977
buscando cambiar mi vida. Viva una vida
de adicciones. Un amigo nmo que ya se
haba establecido aqu me ofreci ayuda;
comenc una nueva vida, conoc a mi
esposa y por primera vez en mi vida sen
que tena un futuro.
Aunque mis adicciones siguieron siendo de
tropiezo, despus de muchos fracasos, Dios
me encontr en el ao 1984 y yo lo acepte
en mi vida. Mi vida cambio totalmente y
pude entender que Dios tena un plan para
m desde antes de la creacin del mundo
-- ah fue donde entend que yo tena que
echarle una mano.
Cuntenos ms de su historia y como
decide ser un Pastor?
Uno de mis primeros trabajos en Rochester
fue en un almacn de piezas de auto, ese
trabajo me conecto por primera vez con la
comunidad, ah empec a envolverme con
diferentes agencias de la comunidad entre
ellas; The Health Associaon, Catholic
Family Center, y RESTART Substance Abuse
Services. A travs de estas oportunidades,
especcamente cuando comenc a
trabajar con RESTART pude de una manera
ms directa comparr mi experiencia con
los clientes y ellos conmigo. Les invitaba a
que asiseran a la iglesia a la que yo haba
empezado a frecuentar y las personas
me acompaaban porque queran lo que
yo tena, mi fe en Dios y tambin vean
el tesmonio de una
persona que haba
prosperado en l. Fueron
tantas las personas
que me seguan que la
iglesia empez a crecer
en nmero y Dios segua
dando palabras de
consuelo y esperanza a
todos ellos; fue cuando
entend y sen el
llamado a ser Pastor. Fui
llamado por Dios para
hacer lo que ya estaba
haciendo hasta que
nalmente no deseaba
ninguna otra cosa sino
ganarme todas las almas
para el reino de Dios.
Cuntos aos ene como Pastor y cul
es la iglesia que usted dirige? Tienen
servicios en espaol?
Tengo 18 aos de experiencia y estudios
y fui ordenado por la iglesia que asisa
como Pastor Asociado. Luego, conne mi
carrera en otra congregacin como Pastor
Asociado por 11 aos y ahora soy Pastor
Principal de una nueva iglesia en el corazn
de nuestra ciudad, en downtown. Hacen
solo 5 meses que mi esposa y yo, junto con
un pequeo grupo de lderes que lanzamos
esta nueva iglesia, River Citychurch /La
Iglesia que Fluye ubicada en el Auditorium
Center. Nuestra iglesia es trilinge:
espaol, ingles y ASL y tenemos servicios
todos los domingos a las 10:00am. Los
viernes ofrecemos un servicio lleno de
dinamismo para los jvenes de 12 a 17
aos en ingles a las 7:00pm.
Tenemos entendido que a usted se le
presento un reconocimiento en el 2011 a
nivel de la Ciudad de Rochester, el premio
LOPI (Lano of Posive Inuence). Qu
signico este premio para usted?
El ser elegido por el disnguido comit de
Hispanic Heritage de la ocina del Alcalde
Richards es un elogio inolvidable. De tal
manera que entend que esto fue parte
del plan de Dios para el comienzo de una
nueva visin para nuestra ciudad y nuestra
comunidad.
Cunteme cuales han
sido los programas
creados para los lanos
en su iglesia? Cmo
est usted conectado
a estos programas y
porque estos programas
son importantes?
Nosotros como iglesia
tenemos la misin
de orientar a nuestra
comunidad con los
principios de Dios
simples y prccos
para que las personas
puedan ser prsperas
en sus vidas diarias.
Procuramos proveer
programas buenos
que a la vez se les pueda medir su xito
y efecvidad en la comunidad y ensear
resultados progresivos. De no ser as,
sera como un simple vendaje a un grave
problema de auto-esma y dignidad.
Por ejemplo, hay programas como
FIDELIS que quieren alcanzar al pueblo
lano que no enen acceso a seguros
mdicos. Nosotros le hemos dado un
lugar en nuestro local para que estn al
alcance de personas en nuestro alrededor.
lmamente, fui parte de Rock the Lakes,
una organizacin internacional que vino
a Rochester y fue muy benecioso para
nuestra comunidad. Originalmente, no
haba el alcance para los hispanoparlantes
y a travs de nuestras sugerencias pudimos
tener personal y ministerios totalmente
en espaol. Tambin tenemos estudios
bblicos para los sordo-mudos hispanos.
Cmo la gente puede ayudar o ser parte
de estos programas?
Lo mejor del ser humano es el deseo
de ayudar a otros. Tenemos que buscar
recursos y equipos de personas adiestradas
que puedan manejar las necesidades
fundamentales de nuestra comunidad. Ser
accesible y tratar a la gente con dignidad
para desarrollar nuevamente la conanza
necesaria al pueblo.
Que es lo que ms le gusta de su trabajo?
Mi trabajo es ayudar al ser humano,
reconocer que Dios ene un plan prospero
para sus vidas y que l nos ha dado los
medios de alcanzarlo a travs de su hijo
Jesucristo. Me lleno de alegra y emocin
cuando puedo ayudar encaminar a una
persona en esa trayectoria.
Cuales son las mayores necesidades que
usted ha visto en la comunidad hispana?
La pobreza y la decadencia de la dignidad;
fe en Dios para mantener la moralidad.
Necesitamos crear y disear programas en
televisin y en la radio que sean educavos
y de orientacin. Necesitamos personas
preparadas que se unan con el propsito de
educar y ensear a como tener xito con lo
que enen primero y despus aplicar esos
principios en metas ms avanzadas.
Cules han sido sus mayores obstculos a
la hora de trabajar con la comunidad?
1. Romper la mentalidad de la
pobreza.
2. El ciclo de programas que no son
efecvos.
Cual es su mensaje para la comunidad
hispana?
Toda civilizacin que ha puesto a Dios
primero ha prosperado. Somos un pueblo
que tenemos mucho conocimiento de
Dios y eso nos ayuda ha tener fe de creer
en sus promesas escritas en la Biblia.
Somos un pueblo arsco de muchos
talentos que proceden de Dios, por lo
tanto levantmonos de la incerdumbre
y comencemos a luchar por lo que nos
pertenece en Cristo Jess y dejemos de
estar sasfechos con lo que hemos credo
que es nuestro desno. Cristo dijo el que
cree en mi, aunque este muerto vivir.
Despierta pueblo y comienza a vivir para
Dios!

In an interview with Rev. David Valle, he
speaks about his life, his new church and
how a local award impacted his career as
a Pastor.
Tell us a lile about your life, where were
you born and where is your family from?
I was born in New York City from Puerto
Rican parents who were in search of a beer
lifestyle for their family. My father is from
Aguadilla and my mother from Mana,
Puerto Rico. They raised 4 boys and 3 girls.
I consider myself to be Puerto Rican, and of
course, of American cizenship.
How did you get to Rochester?
I arrived to the city of Rochester in 1977
with hopes of beering my life. I used
to live a life of addicons. A close friend
had already established himself here and
oered to help me. I was given a new
opportunity, I met my wife and for the rst
me I felt that I had a future.
While my addicons connued, and aer
many failures, God rescued me in 1984 and
I accepted him into my life. My life took
a posive turn and I understood that God
had a plan for my life that was designed
even before the foundaons of this earth
it was at this point that I understood that I
had to do something construcve with my
life.
Tell us a lile more of your story and how
did you become a Pastor?
One of my rst jobs in Rochester was
working in an auto shop. This job helped
me connect for the rst me with the
community and I was able to network
with dierent agencies like The Health
Associaon, Catholic Family Center, and
RESTART Substance Abuse Services.
Through these connecons, especially
when I began working for RESTART, I was
able (and in a very direct way) share my
life-experience with clients and vice-versa.
I would invite them to the church I was
fellowshipping in and people would actually
go . They wanted what I had, my faith in
God. They would also see the tesmony in
me of a person who was prospering in Him.
Many people aended church because of
my invitaons and the church began to
grow in numbers. God would give them
comfort and hope it was at this me of
my life that I understood that I was called
to be a Pastor. I was called for this by God
to do what I was already doing -- I desired
nothing else but to witness to others and
win souls for the Kingdom of God.
How many years have you been a Pastor
and what is the name of your church? Do
you have services in Spanish?
I have 18 years of experience and studies
and was ordained by the church I used to
aend to as an Associate Pastor. I connued
my career at another congregaon as an
Associate Pastor for 11 years and currently
I am the Senior Pastor of a new church
in the heart of our city, in downtown
Rochester. Its only been 5 months since
my wife and I, along with a small group of
leaders launched our new church, River
Citychurch (La Iglesia que Fluye) in the
Auditorium Center. Our church is actually
trilingual: Spanish, English and ASL and we
have services every Sunday at 10:00am.
On Fridays we have an all-English dynamic
Youth Night for youth ages 12 to 17 years
old at 7:00pm.
We understand that you were given a
recognion by the City of Rochester the
LOPI Award (Lano of Posive Inuence) in
2011. What did this Award mean to you?
To have been elected by the disnguished
Hispanic Heritage Commiee from Mayor

We strive to provide good programs that
at the same me can be measured for
their success and eecveness in the
community and show progressive results.
If they cant accomplish this they would be
like a simple bandage to a serious problem
of self-esteem and dignity.
For example, there are programs like
FIDELIS who want to reach out to Lanos
who do not have access to health insurance.
We have provided a place at our locaon
so that they are within the reach of people.
Recently, I was part of Rock the Lakes, an
internaonal organizaon that came to
Rochester and was of great benet to our
community. Originally, there was no scope
for the Spanish-speaking, and through our
suggesons we had sta and ministries
provided in Spanish. We also have Bible
studies for deaf Hispanics.
How can people help or be part of these
programs?
One of the best aributes of human kind
is their desire to help others. We need to
nd resources and teams of trained people
who can handle the basic needs of our
community. People must be accessible and
treat others with dignity in order to build
condence in them.
What do you like best of your job?
My job is to help the human race, recognize
that God has a plan for their lives and that
He has given us the means of aaining this
through his son Jesus Christ. I am lled
with joy and excitement when I can help
steer a person in that path.
What have been the greatest needs that
you see in the Hispanic community?
Poverty and the decline of dignity; also
a lack of faith in God that in turn aects
moral values. We need to create and
design programs on television and on the
radio that would guide and educate. We
need seasoned people to coach others on
how to succeed and teach them how they
can apply principles and eventually set
advanced goals.
Which have been your greatest obstacles
when its me to work with the community?
1. To break the poverty mentality.
2.The cycle of programs that are not
eecve.
What is your message to the Hispanic
community?
Any civilizaon that has put God rst
has thrived. We are a people who have
knowledge of God and this will help us
believe in the promises found in the Bible.
We are an arsc people of many God-
given talents; therefore, lets shake-o
uncertainty and lets ght for what belongs
to us in Christ Jesus. Let us not sele for
what we have believed is our desny. Christ
said, Whoever believes in me, though he
dies, yet shall he live. Wake up people and
start to live for God!
