.com Course webpage: http://ewc4cu.weebly.com Room 528 Term Work: 70% Unit 1 The Writer in his/her own world Students will write from the first person point of view in a variety of genres. The writerhis/her style, observations, and opinions-rather than content, is central in this unit. While learning about the design elements of each required form, the focus will be on students experimenting with and trying to develop their own distinctive writing voice. By the end of the unit, students will have established an on-line Writing Portfolio, as well as their own blogs. Required writing for this unit: 1. Introductory autobiography 2. The memoir 3. Interview/profile 4. Column(satire) Unit 2 The Writer and his/her Imagination
Students use a combination of the following to write in variety of creative styles: imitation of established writers styles, references from their own experiences, their imagination. They

explore several strategies of prewriting as they journey through the stages of the writing process and model the traits of writing. Students explore the conventions of several types of creative writing, and through the exploration of a variety of models, they will analyse and describe the distinctive elements and conventions, and examine how techniques of vocabulary, voice, and style are used in these forms of writing to communicate effectively. Required writing for this unit: 1. Childrens Lit. 2. Short Story 3. Poetry Unit 3 The Writer and the world around him/her Writing in this unit will be inspired by the students examination of issues in their own communities and in the greater world around them. Students will watch TED talks, view TV shows/documentaries, research topics and form opinions about the world around them, then communicate their findings and impressions in a variety of genres. Required writing for this unit:

1. Travel Writing 2. Editorial 3. Reviews(book) 4. Scriptwriting(for the stage-One act play) Unit 4 The Writers Portfolio This unit allows students to refine and reflect upon their learning and writing throughout the course. Students identify a unifying theme or concept for their culminating writing task. This writing will take the form of a thematically based portfolio. Students submit FIVE pieces of writing not previously submitted for summative marking in the course. FOUR different genres must be included among the five pieces included. These five pieces must contain at least TWO original works completed specifically for the portfolio Students polish these pieces based on self-assessment as well as feedback from peer and teacher conferencing. Each of the pieces is accompanied by rough work, peer critiques, and authors explanatory notes. Students write a preface for their portfolio explaining their technical, stylistic, and creative choices for inclusion with each piece in the portfolio anthology. Mark Breakdown: Term Work: 70% Unit 1: Correct completion of each of the following: an autobiography, a memoir, an interview/profile, a column 10%; ONE polished, good copy, complete with critical reflection, submitted for summative evaluation 10%. Unit 2: Correct completion of each of the following: poetry, a short story, a work of childrens literature 10%; Analysis of Childrens Literature 10%. Unit 3: Correct completion of each of the following editorial, travel piece, movie review; script. ONE polished, good copy, complete with critical reflection, submitted for summative evaluation 10%; Blogs: Weekly contributions to blog throughout the course are worth 10%. Culminating Unit: 30% Unit 4: The Writers Portfolio: Students write, edit/revise and add explanatory notes for 5 pieces of writing to create their portfolio.
