evaluated in terms of the following parameters: System parameters: Rated power =10kw, supply voltage =415v, 3-phase, 50HZ, base impedance=0.18ohms. Magnetics ratings: Autotransformer rating=2.48KVA, Inter phase transformer rating=0.58KVA. The average value of the output (load) voltage, Vdc The average value of the output (load) current, Idc The output dc power, Pdc = VdcIdc. The root-mean-square (rms) value of the output voltage, Vrms The rms value of the output current, I rms The output ac power Pac = VrmsIrms (6.2) (6.1)
The efficiency (or rectification ratio) of a rectifier, which is a figure of merit and permits us to compare the effectiveness, is defined as

The output voltage can be considered as composed of two components: Eq.(6.1) the dc value, and Eq.(6.2) the ac component or ripple. The effective (rms) value of the ac component of output voltage is

Where Vs and Is are the rms voltage and rms current of the transformer secondary, respectively. Let us consider the wave forms of Fig.6.1, where v is the sinusoidal input voltage, i is the instantaneous input current, and i is its fundamental component.
Fig: 6.1, Wave Forms for input voltage and Current. If is the angle between the fundamental components of the input current and voltage, is called the displacement angle. The displacement factor is defined as DF= cos (6.9)
Where Is1 is the fundamental component of the input current I. Both J and I. are expressed herein rms. The input power factor (PF) is defined as
PF

Crest factor (CF), which is a measure of the peak input current Js(peak) as compared with its rms value J, is often of interest to specify the peak current ratings of devices and components. CF of the input current is defined by

6.3 Results and Analysis: To compare the performance of the proposed 30-pulse ac-dc converter with the existing 6-pulse ac-dc converter, first a 6-pulse diode-bridge rectifier-fed varying load has been designed, modeled, and simulated. The complete system has been designed for a 3-phase, 415V, 50Hz, l0kW load. The supply-current waveform along with its harmonic spectrum at full load is shown in figures. THD of t the ac mains current as 31.30%. The THD of the ac mains current deteriorates to 69.38% at light load (20%), (as shown in figures.6.7, 6.4). Moreover, the power factor at full load is 0.943, which deteriorates 0.81, (as shown in Table 6.10) as the load is reduced to 20%. These PQ indices are not within IEEE Standard limits. These results indicate the need to improve PQ in ADCs, which can replace the existing six-pulse ac-dc converter at minimal cost.
The distortion power factor describes how the harmonic distortion of a load current decreases the average power transferred to the load. Distortion Power Factor=1/Sqrt(1+THD^2)
