design thinking

TOOLKIT

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT IN EDUCATION ? Design thinking is a user-centered process, and the empathy that comes from observing users enables design thinkers to uncover deep and meaningful needs (both overt and latent). The process requires the reframing of the idea being scrutinized and encourages a systemic view of the field before you jump to solutions. Education in India can benefit from this process when the teachers on the ground learn to use it in their everyday lives to make learning rewarding, rich and relevant.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
When you want to create a better solution, you need to empty your mind of all the things you think you know, and start afresh. This first stage helps you see the field through fresh eyes.

OBSERVE
Note down actions / situations / behaviours that bother you. Notice the environment. Record the movements over a period of time (over a day, could be one week, over a month). Where is the block / problem? When, how, what is repeated - find a pattern.

UNDERSTAND
Ask why. Even when you think you know the answer, ask people why they do or say things. The answers will sometimes surprise you. Encourage stories. Whether or not the stories people tell are true, they reveal how they think about the world. Ask questions / dig deeper that get people telling stories. Listen to nonverbal cues. Be aware of body language and emotions. Ask questions neutrally. What do you think about this idea? is a better question than Dont you think this idea is great? Ask WHY - again.

The biggest factor for how innovative your solution will be depends on HOW you define the problem youre working on.

IDEATE
START WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT USERS Who did you see as the people involved in the experience? What stands out to you? Why? Why do we think they are doing that? DEFER JUDGMENT separating idea generation from idea selection strengthens both activities. For now, suspend judgement. Know that youll have plenty of time to evaluate the ideas after the brainstorm. ENCOURAGE WILD IDEAS breakout ideas are right next to the absurd ones. BUILD ON THE IDEAS OF OTHERS listen and add to the flow of ideas. This will springboard your group to places no individual can get to on their own. GO FOR VOLUME the best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas. ONE CONVERSATION AT A TIME maintain group momentum. Save side conversations for later.

DEFINE
Rephrase / Combine ideas to take a new promising thread. VOTING give every participant 4 stickers / markers / post its - and have everyone put stickers next to their favorite ideas. Clustering of stickers indicates possible strong design directions. Group review and discussion ask everyone to review the most voted ideas, and talk about the specific ideas or directions they like and why. Follow the idea that seems most promising. Define ways to implement the idea.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Quick testing allows one to bridge the gap between ideas and solutions To expend minimum effort for maximum learning To help understand the USER and not the product To refine the solution for better impact

PROTOTYPE
TYPES OF PROTOTYPE Looks Like. Think quick instead of detailed. Feels Like. Think touch but also experience. (How does it feel to be the customer?) Works Like. Think function instead of form.

REFINE & IMPLEMENT

Go back to Go forward. Review the problem areas of the process. Refine the process and do the actual implementation. Get as many people involved in the act of DO- this helps increase the impact.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Documentation allows for reflection. Documentation helps to inspire others. Documentation makes stories come alive. Documentation celebrates the change.

REFLECT & INSPIRE

Revisit the reason that the act of change was implemented for and review if the desired impact was achieved - for the doer and the user. Was a better understanding of the cause / situation / behavior developed? This helps for further change movements. Sharing the story helps let others know that change is possible - thereby helping more people get infected by the I CAN bug.
