1. (a) Explain the typical stress-strain curve with a neat sketch, obtained from a
direct tension test on a mild steel rod and explain the salient points.
(b) A 500 mm diameter circular reinforced concrete column is having 8 bars of
20 mm diameter. The column is subjected to an axial thrust of 875 kN.
Determine the stresses developed in concrete and steel. Assume Esteel = 12
Econcrete . [8+8]

2. (a) Define the terms young’s modulus, shear modulus, Bulk modulus and Poisson’s
ratio.
(b) A bar of certain material 60mm × 60mm in cross-section is subjected to an
axial pull of 180 kN. The extension over a length of 100mm is 0.05mm and
decrease in each side is 0.00525mm. Calculate modulus of Elasticity, Poisson’s
ratio, Rigidity Modulus and Bulk modulus. [8+8]

3. Draw shear force and bending moment diagrams and mark the salient values.

4. A cast iron test beam 30mm square in section and 0.65m long is freely supported
at the ends. It fails with a central load of 2.8 kN. What load at free end will break
a cantilever of the same material 60mm wide and 120 mm deep and 1.8m long.[16]

5. A beam of square section is used as a beam with one diagonal horizontal. The
beam is subjected to a shear force F at a section. Find the maximum shear in the
cross section of the beam and draw the shear distribution diagram for the section.

6. (a) Define a thin cylinder.


(b) Describe the types of possible failures in a thin cylinder subjected to uniform
internal pressure.

(c) Derive the equation for circumferential stress in the thin cylinder subjected to
internal pressure. [4+4+8]

7. The stresses on two perpendicular planes through a point are 60 N/mm2 tension
and 40 N/mm2 compression and 30 N/mm2 shear. Find the stress components and
the resultant stress on a plane at 600 to that of the tensile stress.

8. Find the dimensions of a hollow shaft of internal diameter = 0.6 * external diameter,
to transmit 150 kW at 250 r.p.m. if the shearing stress is not to exceed 70 N/mm2 .
If a blending moment of 3000 Nm is now applied to the shaft find the speed at which
it must be driven to transmit the same power for the same value of the maximum
shearing stress. [16]

1. (a) Draw a typical stress-strain curve obtained from a direct tension test on a
mild steel rod and explain the salient points.
(b) Explain the terms ‘toughness’, and ‘hardness’ of a material.
(c) A composite bar of length 700mm is made up of an aluminum bar of length
400mm and steel bar of length 300mm. The cross-sectional areas of aluminum
and steel bars are of 100mm × 100mm and 50mm × 50mm respectively. As-
suming that the bars are prevented from buckling sideways, calculate the
compressive force P to be applied to the composite bars that will cause the
total length of the bar to decease by 0.25mm. Take modulus of elasticity of
aluminum and steel as 70 kN/mm2 and 200kN/mm2 respectively. [6+4+6]

2. A rod is composed of three segments as shown in Figure2. The rod is held be-
tween the two rigid supports. Find the stress developed in each material when
the temperature of the system is raised by 72o C under the following two different
conditions.

(a) When the supports are perfectly rigid.


(b) When the right side support yields by 0.4 mm.

Take Esteel = 210 kN/mm2 , Ecopper = 100 kN/mm2 , EAluminium = 0.72x105 MPa

3. (a) A cantilever 4m long carries loads of 3kN, 4kN and 4.5kN at free end, 1m
and 2.5m from free end respectively. Draw shear force and Bending-moment
diagrams, and indicate the salient values.

(b) A beam 8m long is supported at two points at equal distances from the ends.
It carries a u.d.l of 25kN/m on its whole length and three concentrated loads
of 45kN one at each end and one at the middle. Determine the positions of
supports if the bending moment on the beam is the smallest. Calculate the
bending moments at supports for this case. [8+8]

4. (a) Find the dimensions of the strongest rectangular beam that can be cut out of
a log of wood 2.4m diameter.
(b) A T-beam having flange 150mm × 20mm and web 20mm × 160mm is simply
supported over a span of 6.2m. It carries a u.d.l. of 5 kN/m including self
weight over its entire span, together with a load of 35 kN at mid span. Find
the maximum tensile and compressive stresses occurring in the beam sections
and sketch the stresses across the section. [8+8]

5. A beam of square section is used as a beam with one diagonal horizontal. The
beam is subjected to a shear force F at a section. Find the maximum shear in the
cross section of the beam and draw the shear distribution diagram for the section.

6. A cast iron tube of 30mm internal diameter and 1m long and 1mm thickness of metal
has cuds closed with water filled in the tube at an internal pressure of 1N/mm2 .
Calculate the circumferential and longitudinal stresses developed in the tube.
Also calculate the change in volume of tube. [16]

7. At a point within a body subjected to two mutually perpendicular directions, the


stresses are 80 N/mm2 tensile and 40 N/mm2 tensile. Each of the above stresses is
accompanied by a shear stress of 60 N/mm2 . Determine the normal stress, shear
stress and resultant stress on an oblique plane inclined at an angle of 450 with the
axis of minor tensile stress. [16]

8. A solid circular shaft, which transmits 300 metric H.P. at 150 r.p.m, is to be replaced
by a hollow shaft equal weight and of the same material, having the bore equal to
half the external diameter. If the horse power transmitted is to remain unaltered,
find the percentage change in the speed of the shaft. The maximum shear stress in
the shaft is not to exceed 66.5 N/mm2 . [16]

2. (a) A circular rod 400mm long and 60 mm in diameter is subjected to an axial pull
of 350kN. The increase in the length is 0.18mm and the decrease in diameter is
0.014mm. Calculate the values of Poisson’s ratio, Modulus of elasticity, Bulk
Modulus and Rigidity Modulus.
(b) What do you mean by ‘a bar of uniform strength’. Give the expression for it
and explain the terms. [8+8]

5. A steel section shown in figure5 is subjected to a shear force of 80KN. Determine
shear stress at the important points and sketch the shear distribution across the

7. Construct Mohr’s circle for an element in pure shear q.

(a) From the circle, derive the following stress transformation equations:
Pn = q sin 2θ; Pt = q cos 2θ.
(b) Obtain from the circle the principal stresses and show them on a sketch of
properly oriented element.
(c) Show from the circle that the maximum and minimum shear stresses are ± q.

8. Two shafts are connected end to end by means of a flanged coupling, in which there
are 12 bolts, the pitch circle diameter being 250mm. The maximum shear stress is
limited to 55 N/mm2 in the shafts and 20 N/mm2 in the bolts. If one of the shafts is
a solid shaft of diameter 50mm and the other is a hollow shaft of external diameter
100mm, calculate the internal diameter of the latter and the bolt diameter so that
the shafts and the coupling are equally strong in torsion. [16]

(b) Explain the terms ductility and malleability. Give examples.
(c) Two vertical rods one of steel and another of brass and each fastened at the
upper end at a distance of 1 m apart. Each rod is 1.2 m long and the diameter
of steel rod is 25 mm and that of brass rod is 30mm. A horizontal rigid bar
connects the lower ends of the bar and is placed a load of 5 kN so that the
bar remains horizontal. Find the position of the load on the cross-bar and the
stresses in each rod. Take Esteel = 2.1 × 105 MPa and Ebrass = 1 × 105 MPa.

2. Two walls, 5m apart are stayed together by a steel rod 32mm in diameter by metal
plates and nuts screwed at each end. The nuts are screwed when the bar is heated
to a temperature of 1300 C. Calculate the pull exerted by the bar on cooling to
atmospheric temperature of 200 C if the ends do not yield also if they yield by
4mm. αsteel = 10 × 10−6 per 0 C, Esteel = 200 kN/mm2 . [16]

6. Enumerate the different applications of thin cylindrical shells.


List out the types of stresses that occur in a thin closed cylinder subjected to
uniform internal pressure.
Derive the expression for longitudinal stress in thin cylinders subjected to uniform
internal pressure and corresponding strains. [16]

7. A rectangular block of material is subjected to a tensile stress of 100 N/mm2 on


one plane and a tensile of 50 N/mm2 on a plane at right angles, together with shear
stresses of 60 N/mm2 on the same planes. Find:

(a) The direction of the principal planes


(b) The magnitude of the principal stresses.
(c) The magnitude of the greatest shear stress. [6+4+6]

8. Two shafts are connected end to end by means of a flanged coupling in which there
are 12 bolts, the pitch circle diameter being 25cm.The maximum shear stress is
limited to 55 N/mm2 in the shafts and 25 N/mm2 in the bolts. If one shaft is solid
of 5cm diameter and the other is hollow of 10cm external diameter. Calculate the
internal diameter of the hollow shaft and the bolt diameter so that both shafts and
the coupling are all equally strong in torsion. [16]
