Causes and Effects of Child Abuse Child abuse is a maltreatment of child that harms his physical, psychological and

social health that affects his normal growth and development. Child abuse happens in many different ways, it can be physical, sexual, emotional, failure to thrive, commercial or neglect. , but the result is the same- serious physical or emotional harm. Physical or sexual abuse may be the most striking types of abuse, since they often unfortunately leave physical evidence behind. However, emotional abuse and neglect are serious types of child abuse that are often more delicate and difficult to spot. Child neglect is the most common type of child abuse. Child Abuse and neglect affects children of all ages, sex, religions, races and incomes. There are many causes of child abuse, socio-cultural factors are most common, for examples, marital problems, social stress, unemployment and poverty. Other causes are factors related to the parent, caregiver or abuser, history of drugs or alcohol addiction, lack of parenting skills, immature parent, psychological disorders and adults who experienced abuse as children. As well as factors related to the victim such as mental retardation and disabilities. Children who have experienced child abuse are likely to have serious physical, behavioral and psychological effects that interfere with a child's physical, mental health and social development; they can be extremely damaging and may even leave deeper lifelong psychological scars. Fortunately, early detection and therapy can reduce prolonged effects. Children are the most beautiful blessing conferred by the lord's, it's the right of a child to receive love, attention, protection and decent life and nobody have the right to abuse child even with one bad ward. I can't imagine that there is anyone who wants to cause any harm to this innocent creature, unfortunately the voice of thousands children crying every second wondering when to stop this agony. There is no secret that Child Abuse and neglect affects children of all ages, sexes, races, religions and socioeconomic background it became a global issue. In many societies, children are considered part of the family property and abused by their parents by being frequently slapped or forcing them to hard work. In these societies, there are no social workers to protect them. There are many things in our society today that unfortunately go overlooked. One such thing that is overlooked is the number of children who are being abused. Unfortunately these children are going through life not knowing whether or not their parents will loose their temper and perhaps kill them. I am deeply sad for Bahrain is facing nowadays such a tragic fact!

Child abuse happens in many different ways like physical, sexual, emotional, failure to thrive, commercial and neglect. It can be caused by many different causes for examples are Socio-cultural factors, factors related to parent, caregiver or abuser and factors related to the victim. All types of child abuse and neglect leave lasting scars. Some of these might be physical, behavioral and psychological effects; it can be extremely damaging and may even leave deeper lifelong psychological scars. To begin with, there are several different types of child abuse and each type affects people differently. Child abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, failure to thrive, commercial and neglect. Physical abuse is any non-accidental physical injury by a person who has care, custody, or control of a child such as striking a child with the hand, fist, or foot or with an object, burning, shaking, pushing, or throwing a child; pinching or biting the child, pulling a child by the hair or cutting off a child's air. Moreover is shaken baby syndrome, in which a frustrated caregiver shakes a baby roughly to make the baby stop crying, causing brain damage that often leads to severe neurological problems and even death. Some parents and caregivers insist that their actions are just types of punishment, ways to make children learn to behave. However discipline actions that leave marks are abusive actions, unforthentley mostly they will deny that and give another reason such as such as falling of their bike. Sexual abuse includes any activity that uses a child to create sexual pleasure either in you or in others such as touching the child's genitals, penetration, incest, rape, photographing, videotaping, or filming of children with the purpose to create sexual stimulation. Furthermore emotional abuse is a pattern of behavior that harms a child's emotional development or sense of self-worth. This may include constant criticism, threats, or rejection, as well as withholding love, support, or guidance. Children are abused with words, actions, and lack of interest. Making fun of a child, namecalling, always finding fault, and showing no respect can damage a child's self-esteem. It is hard to identify children who are emotionally; therefore it's difficult to prove. In addition failure to thrive can be defined as poor weight gain and physical growth failure over an extended period of time in early childhood and caused mostly by medical conditions which can be tested, if no other explanation abuse is suspected. Examples of this type are denying the child food or not feeding him well balanced diet, not seeking medical care and emotional neglect. Moreover is commercial abuse which refers to use of the child in work or other activities for the benefit of others. This includes child labor and use through prostitution. Neglect is the failure to provide essential needs for the child's. Neglect can be physical, educational, or emotional. Physical neglect can include not providing adequate

food or clothing, appropriate medical care, supervision, or proper weather protection. Furthermore, the mother can neglect her unborn child by drinking or using drugs and by not taking care of herself. Educational neglect includes failure to provide appropriate schooling, allowing excessive absenteeism. Psychological neglect includes the lack of any emotional support and love, not spending time to the child, and drug or alcohol abuse including allowing the child to participate in drug and alcohol use. Second, like any other abuse child abuse also has a cause. There are many causes of child abuse; the first famous causes of child abuse are socio-cultural factors, factors related to parent, caregiver or abuser and factors related to the child. Socio-cultural factors include social stress, Unemployment, poor housing, big family, lack of support, isolation, marital problems and the presence of new child caused frustration and anger that may lead to child abuse. Second causes are factors related to the parent, caregiver or abuser, drugs and alcohol addiction, can cause communication problems as a result people loss controls themselves. Because of lack of parenting skills and immaturity, parent have difficulty to control their temper making emotional and physical abuse more likely. As a result of mental illness or psychological disorders people who are not in their right minds, could easily do harm to children, whether on purpose or not. Unfortunately, statistics shows that some adults who were abused as children repeat that same violence behavior with their own children and others too. Finally are the factors that related to the child or victim, Child with disabilities or mental retardation is a perfect victim of all types of child abuse, for examples it may increase the load of care on the caregiver, potentially leading to higher stress levels. Furthermore, a parent's or caregiver's lack of understanding the child's needs and development may lead to abuse by the parent or caregiver who recognizes the child's behavior incorrectly, therefore the chance of neglect is increased. Caring for a child with difficult behaviors is difficult too; some parents don't know the appropriate way to help children learn the way they want them to behave, so they abuse them. In addition, an infant's with excessive crying, feeding difficulties, and a toddler's failed toilet training is not an acceptable excuse for child abuse. Beside children who have to come home to an empty house have more tendencies for sexual abuse as well as neglect. Furthermore, the effects of child abuse on a child depends on how great the abuse is, the greater the abuse, the greater the effect on the whole condition of the child. The effects of abuse can vary from child to child, depending upon the severity and frequency of abuse, age of the child, child's relationship with the abuser, availability of emotional support and

the child's capacity to cope.? Victims of child abuse often experience physical, behavioral and psychological effects which can have life-long damage and its effects on our society are persistent. The physical effects of child abuse sometimes have clear warning signs, such as unexplained bruises, welts, cuts, burns, fractures or dislocation of joints, vaginal or rectal bleeding, difficulty walking or sitting, itching or swollen genitals, vaginal discharge, or sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. On the other hand, some physical signs may be not clear such as frequent sore throats, difficulty swallowing, choking, Pain or discomfort on urination, distended stomach, unusual or nasty body odors and sudden weight gain or extreme weight loss. Indeed, physical signs can give another reason, for example a neglected child may always be dressed inappropriately for the weather, or have dirty clothes and shoes may be showed lack of hygiene or poverty. In severe cases, a child who has been abused may experience seizures, difficulty in breathing, altered consciousness, unequal pupil size, brain damage that often leads to severe neurological problems and even death. One of the worst behavioral effects of child abuse is its tendency to repeat itself when he grows up. The child may be fearful, poor school performance, shy away from touch or appear to be afraid of doing something wrong or afraid to go home. In addition, fear of certain people or places, withdrawal from family and friends, avoidance of things related to sexuality, or rejection of own genitals or body? ,discipline problems at home or school, selfdestructive behavior, spends large amounts of time online, especially at night, and getting involved with alcohol or drugs. Moreover, appetite disturbances, recurrent nightmares, disturbed sleep patterns, fear of the dark, bedwetting, thumb sucking, or excessive crying, aggressive behavior, temper tantrums, frustrates easily, worry excessively, Inability to depend on, trust or love others, and very low self esteem fear of entering into new relationships or activities, School failure. Children that are being sexually abused frequently will display certain behavior such as copying adult sexual behavior, having sexual contact with other children or themselves, exhibit knowledge or interest in sexual acts inappropriate to his or her age, and showing sexual knowledge through language or behavior .Psychological effects of child abuse are less observable but therefore not less important. This can causes anxiety attacks, fits of crying without reason, panic attacks, sleep disturbances, attention problems, self- destructive, repeated self injury, paranoia, , and suicide efforts. Children that have been sexually abused will have all kinds of emotions that they will be dealing with such as fear of the abuser, fear of causing problems, fear of being taken away from their home, and fear that people will look at them

differently. They will also feel anger towards the abuser and feel angry and sham with themselves for allowing it to happen. Moreover, sexually abused children have a higher prevalence of psychiatric disorders like anxiety, depression, Posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidal ideation. Unfortunately, many children who suffer from the psychological effects of child abuse often become child abusers themselves or can become perpetrators of violent crimes; as a result an early psychological therapy will assist the child in dealing with the psychological effects of child abuse to hopefully break the cycle of abuse, also family support, safe environment and join parenting and anger management classes can helps child to cope with these effects. The family can be helped to find out new ways of support and communicating with one another. During treatment, the abused child starts to regain a sense of self-confidence and trust. To conclude, child abuse is any behavior directed toward a child by an adult that harms a child's physical, psychological or emotional wellbeing and affects his normal development. Child abuse can happened for any kid from different sex, age, religion, ethnic, race and social backgrounds. It can take many forms, it can be physical, sexual, emotional, failure to thrive, commercial and neglect. Furthermore, it can be caused by many different reasons for examples are Socio-cultural factors, factors related to parent, caregiver or abuser and factors related to the victim.? Child abuse has many harmful outcomes such as physical, behavioral and psychological effects that have life-long consequences that will forever change a child's life. Psychological therapy, parental training, and anger management can help child to cope with these effects. Child abuse is prevented, first, through awareness, then early detection and intervention. Bahrain has been urged to help fight a global war on child abuse by introducing tougher laws to protect children from abuse, education for society through different media about basic parenting skills and prevention of child abuse, increase community awareness regarding the dangers of internet and the education of kids to recognize inappropriate behaviors (sexual and physical) and report possible abuse at it's earliest stages to their parents or family will help children avoid being abused, and helpfully thus it will reduce this criminal act.
