CHP (Combined Heat and Power)

CHP is commonly used in larger district heating systems and industrial installations High efficiency & low emissions Fuels: coal, biomass, waste or mixtures

CHP until now

Viable only in larger scale (> 3 MWe) and substituted by feed tariffs or green certificates Expensive investments (long pay-back time) in smaller scale

Micro to Small Scale CHP (50 kWe1 MWe)

One of the hot potatoes within renewables Is it technically and economically viable? If yes, it will be a gold-mine

For whom: applications & benefits

Decentralized and independent energy generation Rural or isolated areas (remote communities) Companies with a need for heat or steam and electricity Self-generated, cheap fuel (local biomass) Higher energy efficiency, less transmission losses

Small Scale Gasification/CHP

Feedstock: wood chips
Challenge: How to produce pure gas for power generation
Bad boy: TAR

Gasification
Gasification of biomass and especially wood through pyrolysis was common during the WW II Carbon monoxide (CO) gasifiers for vehicles had a very low efficiency: about 20% of the gas was CO and the rest normal flue gases

Modern gasification
Modern gasification is a process of pyrolysis of the combustible mass in 300500 C Modern gasification process gives a gas with 80% of the original energy value of the biomass From 1 m wood chips comes about 200 m product gas (1 bar)

Gasification of wood

Product gas
Product gas consists typically of
Nitrogen (N2) 4050 % Hydrogen (H2) 1520 % Carbon monoxide (CO) 1215 % Carbon dioxide (CO2) 1015 % Methane (CH4) 35 % The rest is steam and impurities

Micro scale CHP: GASEK Oy

Clean energy with a new generation costefficient direct wood gasifier Gasification of wood chips Output 150 kW: 50 kWe and 100 kWth

Micro scale CHP: GASEK Oy

High efficiency: 1 m3 of wood chips produces 840 m3 of gas

Pilot systems under customer testing in Finland Export starts in 2011 Units can be installed in parallel in order to increase the power production Next version is 500kW and 1MW is on the roadmap.

Production gas
Clean gas, high hydrogen (H) and CO contents. Tar content in the gas is very low which prolong the service interval of combustion engines

Gas burner

Heating oil in houses or industrial processes can be transferred into wood chips By a cooling equipment GASEK CHP technology can be used for refrigeration/cooling applications.

Clean solution
Low emissions, ash recyclable as active carbon

Cold test in -35 C
