Dynamics Review Problem Set

Instructions: This problem set will not be marked, but it will certainly reveal your weak points (allowing you to rectify them) before the test. 1. Box #1 (mass = 2.0 kg) sits on a table. To its right, and connected to it by a massless, inextensible string is box #2 (mass = 3.0kg). The coefficient of kinetic friction between the boxes and the table is 0. 80, and the string connecting the boxes has a maximum tensile strength of 1000 N. What is the maximum force which can be exerted on box #2 (by your hand, or perhaps a rocket) so that the system accelerates without string breakage. 2. The same assemblage of boxes is now draped over a frictionless, massless pulley. Determine the acceleration of the system. 3. Box #2 from above has fallen off the table, and is dragging box #1 after it. What is the acceleration of the system now (assume friction between the table and box #1 still applies). 4. The system of boxes, now badly dented through excessive use, is draped over a wedge shaped system of inclined planes, as shown. Determine the acceleration of the system, assuming no friction.

5. The same system of boxes, which has contained kittens all this time, is now falling down a mineshaft, accelerating at a rate of 4.8 m/s2. If one of the kittens has a mass of 100 grams, determine its weight, as registered by a scale in the box. (Fw = FN , the contact force between the floor of the box and the kitten). 6. A 10 kg crate -O - ducks falls from a 200 m bridge. Determine the crates final speed as it hits the water below. 7. The crate now enters the water, where it is subject to a net force of 1200 N [up]. a) What are the causes of this net force? b) how deep does the crate sink before stopping. c) What would happen to the crate after stopping? 8. Two children are connected by a rope and are standing on frictionless ice. Child #1 (mass = 40 kg) exerts a force of 200 N on the rope. Child #2s mass is 30 kg. Describe the motion of the children. If the rope is 5.0 m long, then how long until the children collide, assuming the tension in the rope to remain constant ( T = 200 N).

9. A chihuahua, mass = 200g, is being taken for a walk by its owner, who must rush home to watch WWF. The owner, who is connected to the chihuahua by a leash which makes a 30o angle with the horizontal, finds that if he applies enough force to the leash, the dog will skip along the pavement with a minimum of friction. If the coefficient of kinetic friction between dog and pavement is 0.50, determine the force necessary, and the forward acceleration of the dog. 10. An object of mass 2.0 kg rests on a horizontal turntable which is rotating at a rate of 4 times per minute. a) Draw a free body diagram for this object. b) Determine the centripetal acceleration of the object if it rests 1.5 m from the centre of the turntable. c) Determine the static frictional force necessary to hold the object on the turntable. d) Determine the coefficient of static friction between the object and the turntable. 11. The same object is now swung by a string in a vertical circle. Determine the maximum and minimum tension in the string. 12. The coefficient of static friction between a 2.0kg wooden block and the 5.0kg steel block upon which it rests is s = 0.50. The steel block rests upon a frictionless surface. Determine the maximum force which can be exerted on the steel block without the wooden block slipping. 13. A 2.0 kg fish hangs from a spring scale which is in turn suspended from the ceiling of an elevator. The elevator at first is accelerating upward at 5.0 m/s2, then gradually slows to a halt at a rate of -5.0 m/s2. Determine the scale reading in kg during these two accelerative phases. 14. Do Problem 23, page 198. 15. A 0.500 kg meter stick sits 3/5 on a table, with 2/5 of its length overhanging. 10 grams of nuts are placed (on average) 5 cm from the overhanging end of the meter stick. A fat, 1.5 kg squirrel hops toward the nuts. How far does it get from the edge of the table before the whole assembly tips and crashes to the floor? 16. A 2.0 meter long, 250 kg refrigerator is being carried (on its side) by two men. One man stands 50 cm from the rear end of the fridge, while the other man stands 80 cm in front of him. How much force does each man have to exert to keep the fridge level? 17. A 3.0 meter long, 10.0 kg wooden plank is being used to support 2 warthogs. One (the 50 kg mother) is placed 10 cm from one end of the plank. The other, the 15 kg baby, is placed 7.5 cm from the other end. Where should Alfonso, the waiter, place his hand to balance the loaded plank? 18. A level curve in a highway is rated at 100 km/h. Assuming the coefficient of friction between tires and pavement to be 0.60, what must be the minimum radius of curvature of the curve. 19. A curve of radius 80 meters is banked at 20o to the horizontal (see fig. on page 181). This curve is rated at 17m/s: that is, a car will stay in the curve with no friction at this speed. If the coefficient of friction between tires and pavement is 0.60, what maximum speed can a driver do without sliding out of the curve.
