Team Speed maintains focus on wins
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
and KRISTINA SCALA
The Haddonfield Sun
The 12 players on the roster of
an area 16-U travel basketball
team have dominated competi-
tors from cities such as Houston
and Detroit.
Spanning from July 22 to July
31, they went head-to-head
against some of the best teams in
the country.
We participated in four tour-
neys. We won two of the four
against the best teams in the en-
tire country, said Team Speeds
head coach and director of bas-
ketball operations, Robert DePer-
sia.
The team was seeded third in
the country behind Chicago and
Los Angeles during the competi-
tion, ultimately winning the Nike
World Championships, held at the
Mirage Casino in Las Vegas.
All the other teams, which
makes it even more special, come
from major metropolitan areas,
DePersia said.
The members of the team are
garnered from a plethora of area
high schools, including Haddon-
field Memorial High Schools own
Nick and Robbie DePersia, who
are top-ranked sophomore basket-
ball guards and sons of the head
coach.

A local high school student
won top honors at RutgersCam-
dens new summer business camp
for high school juniors.
This year, RutgersCamden ex-
panded its popular BizEd pro-
gram to include rising high
school juniors for the first time.
Introduction to BizEd: Build-
ing the Best of You for Business
was held July 24 to Aug. 2 at the
Rutgers School of BusinessCam-
den. The winning students were
awarded free Kindle Fire tablets
for their accomplishments during
the camp, which is designed to
prepare them for collegiate busi-
ness education.
The winners included Kather-
ine Burns of Haddonfield Memo-
rial High School.
The 25 teens from Burlington,
Camden, and Gloucester counties
participated in interactive exer-
cises to increase their confidence,
realize their potential, and devel-
op their leadership skills. Topics
included Dressing for Success,
Social Media Savvy, Time
Management, Personal Brand-
ing, and New Product Develop-
ment.
The students, who were divid-
ed into teams of five, worked
closely with RutgersCamden fac-
ulty to examine business disci-
plines and learn the role technol-
ogy plays in the business world.
They were awarded points for ac-
tivities completed throughout the
program. Each student who par-
ticipated in the Introduction to
BizEd camp received certification
of his or her participation.
The Introduction to BizEd
camp builds upon RutgersCam-
dens highly successful BizEd pro-
gram for rising high school sen-
iors, which completed its 10th
year earlier this summer.

By DR. RICHARD PERRY
Haddonfield Schools Superintendent
Special to The Sun
This upcoming 2012-13 school
year, Haddonfield School District
is pursuing several dynamic, in-
novative initiatives and pro-
grams. Some of these include
being chosen by the state Depart-
ment of Education to be one of
only 10 school districts in the
state to participate in the new
teacher evaluation program
called EE4NJ. This program will
enhance teaching and learning
and will set the foundation for ed-
ucational excellence well into the
21st century in order to effective-
ly support students education in
a digital age and competitive
world market.
In addition to the teacher eval-
uation program, the school dis-
trict is engaged in implementing
technology initiatives, including
iPad initiatives at the middle
school and fifth-grade elementary
school levels, SMART technology
instruction at all the elementary
schools, and online courses and
collaborative learning, via tech-
nology, at the high school. The
partnership with Drexel Univer-
sity has also expanded to include
a summer pre-engineering pro-
gram that focuses on project-
based learning and prepares stu-
dents to become future engineers.
Critical Thinking is also a contin-
ual primary focus along with digi-
tal and student collaborative
learning at all grade levels. Other
initiatives include implementing
a new dynamic language arts pro-
gram in all elementary schools
along with adopting Common
Core Standards in language arts
literacy and mathematics and ex-
panding advanced curricular pro-
grams at the middle and high
schools. The districts world lan-
guage program is also being re-
viewed.
Regarding capital projects, the
district spent $1.4 million in
maintenance and repairs to all
school buildings in 2011-12 school
year and allocated $342,750 for the
2012-13 school year including roof-
ing, infrastructure repair and up-
grades, and structural repair. One
of the capital projects is the reno-
vation to the high schools audito-
rium involving installing a new
sound system and painting proj-
ect, due to the generous efforts of
Lights, Camera, Action, that
raised funds to make this possi-
ble.
In addition to initiatives and
additional programs, the district
welcomes several excellent ad-
ministrators to new positions:
Michael Wilson, assistant super-
intendent of Teaching and Learn-
ing, Dawn Leary, business admin-
istrator, Chuck Klaus, HMHS
principal, Shannon Simkus,
Central School principal, and
Tracy Matozzo, HMHS dean of
students.

The Haddonfield Sun
As the nights become cooler
and shorter, summer begins to
say its farewells.
The Haddonfield School Dis-
trict has been active all summer
to provide a welcoming atmos-
phere as students again shuffle
through the doors, to their lock-
ers and, ultimately, to their class-
rooms.
Officials from each of the dis-
tricts schools have answered a
few questions from The Sun
about the upcoming school year
as parents gear up to send their
youngsters back to school.
Are there any schedule
changes (buses, school days,
etc.) in the new school year?
Last January, the schedule was
altered to eliminate homeroom
and open school at 7:57 a.m.
rather than 7:45 a.m. This modifi-
cation will continue this year at
Haddonfield Memorial High
School.
Are there any curriculum
changes?
All elementary schools will be
implementing the new language
arts program, Journeys. Jour-
neys is a comprehensive read-
ing/language arts program for all
students in kindergarten through
fifth-grade that is designed to
meet the full range of the Com-
mon Core State Standards and
the Response to Instruction
model supporting students in
being successful. Journeys fea-
tures an explicit, systematic in-
structional design that is based
on the research and best prac-
tices.
While there are no new cur-
riculum initiatives at the high
school this year, we were involved
in two highly successful pilot pro-
grams this summer. The first was
an online Financial Literacy
course. This course will be of-
fered in the spring. The second
was a Pre-Engineering course in
collaboration with Drexel Univer-
sity. The result of this successful
course will see this course intro-
duced into the curriculum at Had-
donfield Memorial High School in
the 2013-14 school year. Also, we
are implementing new Common
Core Standards in Language Arts
Literacy and Math. We are also
conducting a comprehensive re-
view in World Language.

is a good time to talk about
the upcoming academic year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity.
Making the honor roll to winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

letters to the editor
Without safety as an issue,
sidewalk decision is flawed
I am writing in regard to the issue of in-
stalling new sidewalks on Washington Av-
enue. My family moved to the neighbor-
hood in question in 1959. I have been a resi-
dent of Haddonfield for the majority of the
past 53 years.
In that time I cannot recall any accident
involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. There
is something unique to that stretch of road
as well as the other streets in that neigh-
borhood that do not have sidewalks.
Myself and apparently the majority of
local residents agree that installing side-
walks would be aesthetically detracting.
There is also the issue of money. We have
finite resources and certainly more press-
ing needs that could be addressed with
the money being earmarked for the side-
walks.
In the absence of empirical evidence re-
garding pedestrian safety, the decision
seems flawed. If safety is not a real issue,
the residents dont want it and the money
could be better used elsewhere. Why do
it?
In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a
close personal friend with Ed Borden. Our
only disagreements are over politics and
the validity of his golf handicap.
Jim Conway
Improve existing sidewalks
before spending money on more
I am glad that at least one of out three
commissioners has an ounce of common
sense (Jeffrey Kasko.) Sadly, that does not
constitute a majority.
If the commissioners are so concerned
about public safety that they violate the
will of local homeowners to install need-
less sidewalks, why dont they simply en-
force ordinances that require homeowners
to maintain existing sidewalks?
Uneven sidewalks and tree limbs ob-
structing existing sidewalks are real safety
issues that could be remedied with mini-
mal tax dollars. Try walking in my neigh-
borhood without needing to walk in the
street in order to dodge tree limbs or un-
even sidewalks.
The size of the expenditure does not re-
flect the degree of improvement. Mr. Bor-
den and Mayor Colombi should think less
about spending and more about improving.

How can parents become
more involved in the educa-
tional process?
At Central Elementary, parents
are always welcome as partners
in the educational process. They
assist in staff hiring and are ac-
tively involved in decision-mak-
ing through the Principals Advi-
sory Committee. Parents are en-
couraged to become actively in-
volved in the PTA. The PTA offers
many ways for parents to be in-
volved during and after school
hours. PTA committees provide a
plethora of services and re-
sources to supplement the educa-
tional program at Central School.
Every year, Central School hosts
several activities and events such
as the Fashion Show, Ice Cream
Social, Skating Party,
Spaghetti/Bingo Night and Fami-
ly Fun Night. Each year, parents
are invited into our classroom for
Parent Visitation, giving parents
the opportunity to observe the
learning environment.
At Elizabeth Haddon, parents
are always welcome as partners
in the educational process by as-
sisting in the staffing process, vol-
unteering within the classrooms,
serving on school based commit-
tees such as the Principals Advi-
sory Committee, and volunteer-
ing to serve on a variety of the
Elizabeth Haddon PTA commit-
tees who have provide numerous
services and resources to supple-
ment the educational program.
There are many opportunities
for parents to be involved at J.F.
Tatem School. We have a very ac-
tive PTA that works collaborative-
ly with our teachers to enhance
our childrens school experience.
Some new initiatives that need
parent support include our New
Family Welcoming Program, a
community garden project and a
school-based publishing pro-
gram. Any parents who would
like to help out should contact
Tatems principal, Karen Schultz
at kschultz@haddonfield.
k12.nj.us or the PTA president,
Cindy Gaffney at ab-
bottgaffney@comcast.net.
Parents are welcome to join the
PTA and Principals Advisory
Committee to be involved in the
educational and decision-making
processes at the middle school.
To be involved at the high
school level, monitor their work,
be positive and support the
childs efforts and accomplish-
ments. Make school a priority
topic of conversation, but balance
it with other important things for
young people. There are a lot of
opportunities for parents to get
involved in the PTA, booster
clubs and activities. More infor-
mation will be available at Back
to School Night.
What initiatives, including
environmental, are taking
place at the schools?
At Central School, we strive to
provide all students with an indi-
vidualized learning experience.

Robbie since we were little kids
out in the back and I loved it ever
since. I played everyday, said
Nick.
The ability to specialize in a
certain sport is vitally important
as a player gets older, explained
DePersia, who has been with the
team for 32 years.
They are all picking what they
love, he said, which is the won-
derful thing because the time and
effort they put into it, people dont
realize it. People just go out and
say wow, hes fast or hes athlet-
ic.
They dont realize these guys
are like 15/16 years old.
Rodney Williams, of nearby
Cherry Hill, begins his days early
with three and a half hours of
weight lifting and basketball
practice.
Ever since I was young, my
dad put the ball in my hands. It
was a love early, he said.
The weight training the team
does pushes them toward success,
said DePersia.
When you watch them play, a
lot of teams that we play, might be
better than us and might have
more athletic ability, but as the
game goes on to the third and
fourth quarter, they dont get
tired, he said. They dont fa-
tigue; they can just keep playing
at the same level.
That perseverance puts them
ahead, he added.
While in Las Vegas, Team
Speeds players were the only
ones to participate in 19 games,
whereas most other teams only
played five or six.
It just goes to show you how
much they have devoted to it and
it makes them special, said De-
Persia.
The players have attracted col-
lege scouts.
Dr. Earl Pearsall, the teams ac-
ademic adviser, is involved in the
Princeton Review and mentors
the players to ensure high GPAs
and good test scores to make the
kids appealing to admissions
counselors.
Its just incredible what they
have achieved, DePersia ex-
plained. Now colleges are con-
tacting us off the hook for all
these guys, and they are sur-
prised they are as young as they
are because in most tourneys we
play older kids. So we play up in
age. So they are real surprised
that they are actually underage.
In addition to athletic and aca-
demic advisory, the team mem-
bers receive spiritual guidance
from Bishop Joseph Roberts.
Its really good to have a fami-
ly figure who makes sure the kids
present themselves in the right
way, said DePersia, pointing out
the players are not caught in inap-
propriate activities.
For DePersia, its a different
feeling to have his own sons on
the team.
The level that we play on is
very intense and very high end so
all of them will probably tell you
that I ride them, you know what I
mean. But we are trying to get
their maximum effort, he said.
Unfortunately, when we leave
they have to drive home with me
and probably have to hear it
much longer. They see all the
stuff thats going on in the back-
ground.
The intensive program begins
in March and ends in November,
giving time for the players to pur-
sue roles at their high schools.
More than 400 basketball play-
ers apply to be on the team, and
once a player is selected and vet-
ted by the existing team, they are
kept for the long haul.
The reason is that over the
course of the year we spend so
much time together and if its not
the right personality, its a cancer
because its spreads through the
roster. So they have the last say, Is
this the kid you want or is this
not the kid you want? And they
are real candid, DePersia said.
Next season, the team will have
competitions in New York,
Boston, Pittsburgh, Virginia, At-
lanta, Puerto Rico, Mexico City
and Las Vegas.
Some of the current team
members are highlighted in an
upcoming invitational that will
have top players from Virginia to
New York.
While on the court, the players
morph from high school kids into
stars, shooting hoop after hoop.
Speed is a skill just like any
other skill. Changing directions
is a skill. Just like any other thing
you would learn, said DePersia.
You just dont grow up being
able to go full speed this way.

We want each student to grow and
learn as a critical thinker, one
who is prepared for the 21st centu-
ry and the digital world. This year,
we will implement a character ed-
ucation program to create a safe,
inclusive and nurturing environ-
ment for our students.
Our teachers continue to value
critical thinking and digital
learning in the classroom.
Central School has an active
Environmental Club. The Central
School vegetable garden and
plant/flower garden provides
valuable learning experiences for
our students. A rain garden was
installed at Central/Middle
School entrance.
The elementary schools will be
partnering with the Haddonfield
community as they celebrate the
Tricentennial in 2013.
One primary initiative at Eliza-
beth Haddon for the 2012-13
school year is to integrate the use
of Smart Board technology with-
in instruction in every general
education classroom. Smart
Boards offer multiple ways for
students to express themselves,
interact with activities and com-
prehend concepts. Instruction
can be tailored to the needs of
each student, where classrooms
become inclusive learning envi-
ronments. By holding numerous
fundraising activities the Eliza-
beth Haddon PTA generously
purchased the new Smart Boards
for the classrooms.
Another initiative is the con-
tinued growth and development
of the school garden, which is
used to teach students about
healthy eating choices by harvest-
ing fresh vegetables that are
served during the student lunch-
es. Other plants and flowers in
the garden contribute to the un-
derstanding of ecology and the
interactions between plants and
insects.
At Tatem Elementary, we con-
tinue to look for ways to engage
and inspire todays digital learn-
ers. This year we have added
three new Smart Boards, three
Apple TVs and an iPad cart as
part of the district technology vi-
sion.
The initiatives at the high
school have been described above.
In your opinion, what is the
number one needed school
supply?
Central Elementary: Each year,
we look closely at the needs of the
school and our students. The
school and PTA work as a team to
provide the necessary learning
tools and supplies for our stu-
dents.
Elizabeth Haddon: Careful
budgeting and the expending of
available funds provide adequate
supplies for the school. Addition-
ally, the PTA provides a wealth of
resources to support the efforts of
teachers and staff.
Tatem Elementary: The num-
ber one needed school supply
right now is the kids! Our build-
ing is empty and it just doesnt
feel right. We cant wait to wel-
come back our students and
begin an exciting year of learn-
ing.
Middle School: Flash drives
High School: Flash drives
What else should parents
know about the Haddonfield
School District as the school
year begins?
Central Elementary: Officials
are so excited to be part of the
Central School community. They
know it is going to be a great year
of learning and growing! They
look forward to building trusting
relationships with students, fami-
lies, teachers and community
members.
Central Schools Ice Cream So-
cial will be held on Sept. 7 at 6:30
p.m. Central School will hold a
Ringing of the Bell ceremony
to welcome back students, fami-
lies and teachers on Sept. 10 at
8:10 a.m. on the blacktop behind
Central/Middle School. PM
Kindergartens ceremony will
take place on Sept. 10 at 12:15 p.m.
The first PTA meeting will be
held on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the
Library. We welcome all parents
to Back to School Night on Sept.
19 at 6:15 p.m.
The faculty and staff at Eliza-
beth Haddon welcome the return
of our students and look forward
to another very successful and
prosperous school year. Our stu-
dents will be welcomed back on
the first day of school in grand
tradition with our Ringing of
the Bell Opening Ceremony re-
plete with banner and balloons.
Our PTA continues the gala fes-
tivities by hosting an Ice Cream
Social at 6 p.m. that evening for
all Haddon families, old and new,
to have an opportunity to meet
others and feel part of the school
community. This is a great time to
re-establish friendships, share
summer adventures, and come to-
gether as a school community to
support our students growth and
love of learning.
The faculty and staff at the
middle school welcome the return
of our students. We will continue
focusing on the students needs,
abilities, interests and learning
styles with our teachers as facili-
tators of learning. We will contin-
ue to expand expertise in differen-
tiated instruction, focusing on
how we teach, what we teach and
evidence of learning. We are con-
tinuing with our initiative of in-
volving Critical Thinking and 21st
Century Learning. Our teachers
will engage students to think criti-
cally by expanding their design of
engaging and reflective instruc-
tional tasks.
The district was awarded a
grant by the State in excess of
85K to implement a new teacher
evaluation system at the high
school. More information can be
found at http://www.nj.gov/edu-
cation/EE4NJ/
Also, the message we would
like to send is that we as a school
and a staff look forward to the up-
coming school year. Our thriving
partnership of student, parent,
and educator will help to place
the students of Haddonfield Me-
morial High School in a situation
that encourages growth and suc-
cess.

Haddonfield Plays and Players,
located at 957 East Atlantic Ave.,
presents Picasso at the Lapin
Agile. All tickets are $15.
This September we will trans-
port you through time and space
to Paris in 1904 where Albert Ein-
stein and Pablo Picasso have a
chance meeting. They and the
other patrons of the Lapin Agile
spend the evening debating art,
science, genius, sex, death, and, of
course, novelty pies.
Written by actor and comedian
Steve Martin, Picasso at the
Lapin Agile is a humorous look
at the nature of beauty as seen
through the eyes of two of the
20th century's greatest minds,
and several of its not-so-great
minds.
The play is thick with Martins
wry humor and love of the ab-
surd as the ensemble discusses
everything from astrophysics to
incontinence.

he supplies are purchased, the backpacks are
packed... the kids are back in school
again! Now is the perfect time for busy
Moms to take a night, recharge, and learn a
few things ourselves. Join us as we share our
back to school stories and concerns.
Dr. Richard Selznick, Director of the Cooper
Learning Center, will help us process our
thoughts and answer questions about various
struggles our school-agers might be fac-
ing, including social skills, excessive use
of technology, classroom disengagement,
and more. Dr. Selznick will also tackle the
tough issue of bullying - an eye-opening
perspective on what it means in today's
world and what parents need to know.
