Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18; Ephesians 6:10-20; John 6:56-69 August 26, 2012 Ordinary Time In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Sisters and brothers, I have good news: God made us holy. God reached out to us through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and made us holymade us sacred. We are made holy and sacred through Christ That, however, that does not mean that we are perfector that life is easy. In fact, because God reached out to us through Jesus, our lives might just be that much more difficult. In our gospel lesson this morning we hear clear and life-giving words from Jesus when he says, Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in themthe one who feeds on me will live because of mewhoever feeds on this bread will live forever. The words Jesus spoke are life-giving to us, in our context today. The strange thing is that these words might evoke in us images of people gathered around the communion table, but they most likely evoked a very different response from the disciples. Rather than gathering around Jesus, some of them leave. They say, This is a hard teaching, and they walk away. They abandon Jesusbut why? Why would they leave after being promised eternal life? While there might be several good reasons for the disciples to have left after this promise, there is one that is particularly compelling. Jesus was offering a new way to communion with God, but it contradicted generations of Jewish teaching. It flew in the face of a fundamental Jewish law that was so important, its still practiced today by Jews around the world.

Leviticus chapter 17 reads, For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for ones life. Therefore I say to the Israelites, None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner residing among you eat blood. This is the foundation for kosher cooking that is still practiced today. Jesus teaching was hard because, for faithful Jews, consuming blood was off limits. Jewish law prohibits this, but not because blood is dirty. Rather, if we look closely at Leviticus 17, blood is off limits because its holyits sacredits the source of life and the foundation for our relationship with God. It was difficult for many disciples to hear Jesus words, because he was offering a radical interpretation of Jewish law. Jesus reframed their understandings of flesh and blood and sacrifice. No longer was the holiness of flesh and blood kept on the altar, reserved only for God. The holiness of flesh and blood left the altar and became human. Not only that, but this flesh and blood was meant for everyone. Holiness became accessible. God affirmed the sacredness of all life in the life of Jesus. Sisters and brothers, we too are sacred and holy. We know this and believe this because we have received the grace of God through Jesus Christ. Just as this was hard to hear for Jesus first followers, this might also be a difficult lesson for us. It might lead us, at times, to want to walk away. Sisters and brothers, we are made holy through Jesus Christ. Thus, we are called to live in ways that affirm that life itself is sacred and holyand this is no easy task. It is no easy task when our lives sometimes feel less-than-holy. It is no easy task because, even though we are not perfect, we are called to live differently. We are called to live as Jesus lived: to welcome the stranger, work for justice, make peace, and love our neighbors. We are called to do these things because we are holy and sacred creations of God. We are called and we are able to do these things because Christ lives in us. And we are privileged to respond to this good news by living in ways that recognize and affirm the sacredness of all life. Amen.

Espaol En el nombre del Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amn. Hermanas y hermanos, tengo buenas noticias: Dios nos hizo santos. Dios se acerc a nosotros a travs de la vida, muerte y resurreccin de Jess, y nos hizo santos... nos hizo sagrados. Somos hechos santos y sagrados a travs de Cristo, que, sin embargo, eso no significa que seamos perfectos... o que la vida es fcil. De hecho, debido a que Dios se acerc a nosotros a travs de Jess, nuestra vida podra ser mucho ms difcil. En nuestra leccin del evangelio esta maana omos palabras claras y vivificantes de Jess cuando dice: "El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre permanece en m y yo en l ... el que se alimenta en mi vivir por m ... El que come de este pan vivir para siempre. "Las palabras de Jess son vida para nosotros, en nuestro contexto actual. Lo extrao es que estas palabras pueden evocar en nosotros Imgenes de personas reunidas alrededor de la mesa de comunin, pero lo ms probable es evocando una respuesta muy diferente de los discpulos. En lugar de reunirse en torno a Jess, algunos de ellos se van. Ellos dicen: "Esta es una enseanza difcil", y se alejan. Ellos abandonaron a Jess ... pero por qu? Por qu se van despus de haber prometido la vida eterna? Si bien puede haber varias buenas razones por las que los discpulos se han ido despus de esta promesa, hay una que es particularmente convincente. Jess estaba ofreciendo una nueva forma de comunin con Dios, pero esto contradice la enseanza de generaciones de judos. Esto iba en contra de una ley fundamental juda que era tan importante, todava hoy en da es practicada por los Judos en todo el mundo. Levtico captulo 17 dice: "Porque la vida de la carne est en la sangre, y yo os la he dado para hacer expiacin por vosotros mismos en el altar, y la misma sangre har expiacin de la vida de uno. Por eso les digo a los israelitas: "Ninguno de vosotros comer sangre, ni ningn extranjero que reside entre vosotros comer sangre". Esta es la base para la cocina kosher (aprobada por la ley juda) que todava se practica hoy en da. La enseanza de Jess era difcil, ya que, para los Judios fieles, consumir sangre estaba fuera de lmites. La ley juda prohbe esto, pero no porque la sangre es sucia. Ms bien, si nos fijamos bien en Levtico 17, la sangre est fuera de lmites, porque es sagrada... es sagrada ... es la fuente de la vida y la fundacin de nuestra relacin con Dios. Fue difcil para muchos discpulos or las palabras de Jess, porque l estaba ofreciendo una

interpretacin radical de la ley juda. Jess replanteado su comprensin de la carne y de la sangre y el sacrificio. Ya no era la santidad de la carne y la sangre que se mantena en el altar, reservada slo para Dios. La santidad de la carne y la sangre abandon el altar y se hizo hombre. No slo eso, sino que esta carne y la sangre era para todos. La santidad se convirti en accesible. Dios afirma la santidad de toda vida en la vida de Jess. Hermanos y hermanas, nosotros tambin somos sagrados y santos. Lo sabemos y creemos esto porque hemos recibido la gracia de Dios a travs de Jesucristo. As como esto era difcil de escuchar para los primeros seguidores de Jess, esto tambin podra ser una leccin difcil para nosotros. Esto nos puede llevar, a veces, a querer alejarnos. Hermanas y hermanos, estamos santificados en Cristo Jess. Por lo tanto, estamos llamados a vivir en formas que afirman que la vida es sagrada y santa... y esto no es una tarea fcil. No es una tarea fcil cuando nuestras vidas a veces se sienten menos de lo sagrado. No es una tarea fcil porque, a pesar de que no somos perfectos, estamos llamados a vivir de otra manera. Estamos llamados a vivir como vivi Jess: dar la bienvenida al desconocido, trabajar por la justicia, hacer la paz y dar amor a nuestro prjimo. Estamos llamados a hacer estas cosas porque somos santas y sagradas creaciones de Dios. Somos llamados y somos capaces de hacer estas cosas porque Cristo vive en nosotros. Y somos privilegiados al responder a estas buenas noticias, viviendo de manera que reconocemos y afirmamos la santidad de toda vida. Amn.
