The International Exhibition of Black Music


Mondomix created the International Exhibition of Black Music in 2010. Since then, this multimedia exhibition has been presented in Dakar, Senegal and in Saint Denis, Reunion Island. Its next stop will be from the 1st of September to the 12th of December 2012 at the Museum Africa in Johannesburg before it will be transferred to Salvador de Bahia, Brazil where it will become a permanent exhibition. This multimedia project using the latest developments of the digital arts technology is the first initiative documenting black music as a full concept from African roots to blues, jazz, soul, funk, Caribbean and Latin American music.

The events around the exhibition


The exhibition, besides its content, touches many aspects of music linked with pictures and with new technologies. To address these different topics, a conference and two training sessions of 5 days are organized around the exhibition. The workshops Filming Music and Using Digital Arts technology in Culture a new dimension for experiencing music and intangible arts cover the technical and practical aspects, and will take place from the 5th to the 10th September at the French Institute in Johannesburg and Museum Africa, respectively.

The conference Music & Pictures, new rules, new markets aims to address questions around the place of music on TV (music videos, live concerts), in the advertising and in the film world. It is dedicated to an audience of music and audiovisual professionals, media, artists, students, etc..

David Alexander Sheer Publishing - ZA

David Alexander is the Managing Director of Sheer Publishing (Pty) Ltd, the fastest growing independent music publishing company in South Africa. Sheer Publishing represents South African songs and songwriters for the world and international publishers for Southern Africa and Africa. David is currently the Chairman of NORM (National Organisation for Reproduction and of Samex (South African Music Exports) which hosts SA National Pavilions at Womex, Midem and Popkomm. Samex also has trade links with music industry trade shows in Brazil and Australia and is a part of BEMA which is the African Music Export Council. David has written articles and served on panels at many international music industry conferences and also lectures a course on the music business which he has written called A Practical Guide to the South African Music Business.

Bernard Attal Film maker France / Brazil

Bernard Attal was born in France and has been living in Brazil since 2005. He wrote, produced and directed three short films (29 Inches, Rat Island, and A Bike Ride) and The Magnificent, a 52-minute documentary for the Brazilian Public TV channel. All of these films participated and won awards in festivals throughout the world, including Palm Springs, London-BFI, Clermont-Ferrand and Edinburgh. He recently completed The Invisible Collection, a fiction feature to be distributed in the movie theaters in 2013. Bernard graduated in economics at Sciences-Po in Paris and subsequently studied filmmaking at the New School in New York City.

JB Arthur Music Composer ZA

SAMA and Emmy award-winning composer, musical arranger and producer, JB Arthur has made music his life since becoming a professional musician in 1977, and continues to do so, working alongside some of South Africas and the worlds greats. From conducting a full orchestra at age twenty four to receiving the highest accolades the industry offers, JB Arthurs musical journey has been as vibrant as the music he creates. Marc Benache Mondomix France

CEO and founder of mondomix.com, the12 year old major independent media (web and print) on world music in France. Mondomix is the initiator of the International Exhibition on Black Music which was presented in Senegal and Reunion Island and now in Johannesburg. Marc has collected a deep experience and knowledge in mixing media and new technologies, in production of big and complex media websites and in music films and documentaries. His fields of expertise: world music, cultural diversity and digital development.

Dale Blignaut Mama Dance ZA

Dale is General Manager of South Africas only music solutions company, Mama Dance ! Music Solutions. The company offers music supervision services, manages a composer agency and publishes one of the largest Southern African production music libraries. With his knowledge of marketing and advertising (he completed a Bachelor of Business Science degree, specializing in marketing, at UCT in 2003) and his passion for music (he first tickled the ivories at the tender age of 6), he has found himself in the wonderful position of getting paid to listen to lots of music and find uses for it in the advertising and film worlds! Most of Dales time is currently taken up as music supervisor for the film, Long Walk to Freedom.

Gilbert Castro Rue Stendhal / Cellulod France

Gilbert Castro is the founder of the French independent label Celluloid. For more than 30 years he has been involved in the record business: production, distribution, publishing and recording studios. Since the early 80s, he worked with some major African artists: Tour Kounda, Youssou NDour, Salif Keita, Mory Kante, Djeli Moussa Diawara, Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, Johnny Clegg, Lucky Dube, Ismael Lo, Cesaria Evora, Manu Dibango, Kora Jazz Trio, Ray Lema, ...

Nainita Desai Soundology UK

Nainita is an award winning media composer having scored hundreds of major Film & TV projects. She has worked with Peter Gabriel and numerous world artists such as Papa Wemba, Billy Cobham, Daniel Lanois, and Tori Amos at Real World Studios, as well as working as a sound designer on Hollywood feature films. Many of her projects have won or been nominated for numerous awards including OSCARS and BAFTAs. Clients include all the major Intl broadcasters including the BBC, C4, ITV, C5, Nat Geo, Discovery, Arte, NHK, HBO and SKY. Jrme Galabert Sakifo Festival and Label Reunion Island

Jrme is the founder and the director of the Sakifo Festival on Reunion Island that is going to celebrate its 10th anniversary in June 2013, the festival became an emblematic event featuring diverse musical styles from the region and worldwide. He is also the director of the label Sakifo Records distributed by Wagram since 3 years. He plays an active role in the structuration of the music industry in Reunion and the Indian Ocean Region, being the coordinator of the IOMMA - Indian Ocean Music Market since two years and the Chairman of the board of run Music, a non profit organization, that takes care of exporting the Music from Reunion, documenting its musical heritage of the region and offering professional training for artists and music operators

Dan Jawitz Fireworx Media ZA

Dan has credits on dozens of documentaries, feature films and long form factual and fiction TV series as producer or executive producer. In 2006 he won an Emmy with Mark Kaplan and Francois Verster for most outstanding cultural and artistic achievement for the film A Lions Trail. Jawitz is one of three owners of Fireworx Media (Pty) Ltd, an integrated production and distribution company. The company directors are Neil Brandt, Bridget Pickering and Dan Jawitz. Fireworx Media are proud to be one of the most awarded production companies in South Africa. Andre Le Roux SAMRO Foundation ZA

Andre Le Roux is an arts administrator and cultural activist with a strong passion for the development of cultural policy and building cultural institutions. His experience ranges from grassroots level on the Cape Flats in the Western Cape, to provincial level for the Eastern Cape Government, National and International level for the South African Department of Arts & Culture and the National Arts Council. Andre has been the chairman of Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition, and of the South African Coalition for Cultural Diversity. Alice Martin Music Museum at Cit de la Musique France

Alice is specialized in international cultural management; she collected a very broad experience in the cultural field working at Christies in London, Fondation Cartier, Centre Pompidou in Paris and for working 7 years as the director of production at the International Photography Festival of Arles. She is now deputy director of the Music Museum at the Cit de la Musique in Paris. She teaches cultural management at the Sorbonne University and in business schools.

Diliza Moabi Film maker, producer Wanaya Visual Arts - ZA

Founder and head of Wanaya Visual Arts film and media company. Film Director and Editor, Diliza Moabi worked in a variety of projects from commercials, corporate videos, documentaries, television dramas, music events and short films. The companys most recent production is Sisters with Soul a 6 part music documentary series produced for SABC 1. Diliza served as the Co-Executive Producer and Editor of Vuma: a music revolution, A kwaito documentary series which had a successful run on SABC 1, he was a co-creator and Executive Producer on another 13 part music documentary series called Miami Invasion, produced for Mnet Mzansi Magic.

Paul Sibisi (aka Nhlanhla) Entertainment law specialist ZA

Nhlanhla Paul Sibisi is a media and entertainment law specialist with extensive knowledge of the telecommunications, music, media and broadcasting industries. He practiced at Webber Wentzel and worked for, amongst other, Telkom, RISA, Sony Music and the SABC. He is currently the CEO of Rights Clearance and Administration (a division of Nuritone Investments (Pty) Limited) which is a one-stop music rights clearance and advisory services company in Africa, focusing, primarily, on assisting Mobile Network Operators, Broadcasters, Ad Agencies, Film and Production Houses to license and clear music usage rights. The Company currently has the following clients, amongst others, SABC, SA Traditional Music Achievement Awards and the Association of Independent Record. Mr Sibisi also serves in the Patents Examinations Board and the Standing Advisory Committee on IP.

Sipho Sithole Native Rhythms Productions ZA

Sipho Sithole award winning producer, founder and owner of a successful independent record label and production house Native Rhythms Productions. Sipho is credited with coining the AfroSoul genre and for signing and producing leading Afro-Soul singer songwriters such as Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Siphokazi, and for mainstreaming hip hop in South Africa with his signing of Skwatta Kamp, Zuluboy, and Zakwe to mention a few. A former Deputy CEO of Gallo Music Group and later Head of Group Strategy at SABC and now Chief Communications Officer for the Local Organising Committee of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations South Africa 2013, Sipho is no stranger to the corporate world and has held various leadership position including seating on the Board of Directors of The Airports Company of South Africa, Momentum Limited (a subsidiary of Firstrand Limited), Johnnic Entertainment (now Avusa) and Nu Metro Cinemas (Kenya). Sipho Sithole now sits on the Board of Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition, the Moral Regeneration Movement and regularly invited to speak at local and international conferences on leadership, music and culture.
