Ethiopia:

Map Building (K. Turner) Grade 3-5 Objective: Map skills and building an understanding of how the location of Ethiopia/surrounding landforms affects the culture of Ethiopia. Procedure/Activity: Begin lesson by sharing the individual maps that the students colored for homework. Have a discussion about their travel experiences and how diverse the climate and attractions are in the U.S. and then explain the size of Ethiopia as compared to the size of the U.S. and how it is also a country with great diversity. Then provide each student with a blank outline map of Ethiopia and have students use maps and atlases to locate and label major places. Materials: blank outline map of Ethiopia and surrounding countries, attached worksheet of important places to label, colored pencils and atlas/map of Ethiopia Assessment: The completed map of Ethiopia. The students can also journal about what predictions they might have about the culture of the people who live there based on the geographic location/surrounding landforms of Ethiopia.

Understanding where a country is located is important for learning about its culture. The land and water in and around a country affects many parts of a culture. This includes where cities are located and what foods are eaten.

Directions: On the outline map, label the following: Country: Ethiopia Capital: Addis Ababa River: Blue Nile Bordering Countries: Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Sudan Cities: Gonder, Bahir Dar, Awassa, Lalibela Mountain: Simiens Rift Valley Equator Create a map key

When you are done labeling, make sure you have included a map key, compass rose, and added color to make your map easy to understand.
