TEACHINGASSISTANT BenjaminDubow,bndubow@gmail.com OBJECTIVES ThiscourseisintendedasahandsonintroductiontovectorGISusingArcView9.3software.VectorGISdataareappropriateformodeling geographicobjects,suchasboundedareas(censustractsorservicedistricts),specificlocations(buildingsoreventssuchascrimes),and networks(streets).StudentswilldevelopskillsnecessaryforcarryingoutbasicGISprojectsandforadvancedGIScoursework.Wewillfocuson waysthatGISisandcouldbeappliedtourbanhistory,health,criminologyandsocialservices.Theclassalsoaimstohelpstudentsdevelopan understandingofwhatisspatial,whenGISisappropriateforansweringquestion,andtodevelopanawarenessofthepowerissuesinvolvedin mapmaking.Bytheendofthiscourse,youshouldbefamiliarenoughwithArcGIS9.3tofind,map,andanalyzedatausingbasicGIStoolsandbe abletoteachyourselfadditionalGISskillsusingthehelpfiles,onlinematerials,andsoftwaremanuals.Thiscourseisspecificallydesignedto prepareyouforyourseniorthesis,springorinternship,andintermediateGIScourses(LARP741andLARP743).
