A
fter her
quick
weekend
getaway,
a good
friend of
mine scheduled an im-
promptu Sunday brunch.
She was cryptic and short
about it. Something was up.
I knew she was engaged
from the moment I saw
her smile. I squealed like
a 12-year-old at a Justin
Bieber concert and impa-
tiently sat waiting for the
rest of our friends to arrive
so she could recount the
proposal. We congratulated
her fanc on his taste in
rings, and then interrogated
him about his nerves.
It was a celebratory morn-
ing; a feeling I wished for
their sake would last a while
as they shared the news with
others. We all know what
soon follows the ring: lots
of questions. When are you
getting married? Whos do-
ing your fowers? What does
your dress look like?
The onset of inquiries
can create urgency in brides
to have the answers right
away. It can quickly shift
the mood from Congratu-
lations! to Thats great,
but
Now, two short weeks
after our brunch, my friend
is already knee-deep in
planningbooking venues,
photographers, forists and
DJs.
The process can be
overwhelming, especially
because most brides are
frst-time customers who
cant always depend on
experience to pick a reliable
vendor.
Knowing this, my friend
hasnt stopped asking oth-
ers for references. Its the
advice wedding pros have
repeatedly given us over
the past several months of
interviews: start with good
recommendations.
Our goal, then, while
planning this issue was
simpleto serve as a reli-
able and inspirable friend
to help you through what
should be a fun and exciting
process.
In Plan Like a Pro we
gathered great advice from
area wedding pros to create
a checklist of what to do
and when for a seamless
wedding day.
In Bridal Bliss we staged
three different weddings
each with its own vibeto
offer inspiration. We show
ways to transition your look
from the ceremony to recep-
tion without changing your
dress. And we follow each
wedding with an inspiration
board for, you guessed it,
even more ideas.
Plus, there are dazzling
rings for the bride and
groom, easy ways to add
color to your bridal party
and a slew of amazing real
Columbus weddings. And
because we cant stress
relaxation enough, weve got
a list of luxe spa treatments
that will ease your stress and
ensure you look your best
on the big day.
I know Ill be handing a
copy of this to my friend as
soon as its off the presses.
I hope sheand youcan
take advantage of our leg
work to plan with greater
ease and enjoy this time.
You deserve it!

efore making a single
call, fgure out two
things: the guest list
and your budget.
Both impact nearly
all the decisions you make. Next,
jot down things that are important
to you, suggested Jo Panarello, of
Panarello Consulting in Columbus.
That includes things you like and
those you dont. You may not
know exactly what you want, but
you know what you dont want,
she said. Make a priority list. For
example, have you always dreamt
of having tons of fowers or a band
instead of a DJ? List your non-
negotiable details and start there.

Meet with two or three
vendors in each category,
recommended Panarello, and
set meetings within a day or
two of each other. That way
your impressions will be fresh
in your mind and you can
better compare, she said.
Find a wedding planner
you click with, advised
Worthington wedding
planner Emilie Duncan. You
have to trust and like your
planner, she said. If you
have major vendors already
booked, ask them which
planners they like to work
with. They see the other
side, she said.
think space when
picking a venue. I love
space. Guests love space.
The serving staff loves
space. Always make sure
the space can accommodate
the numbers youre going to
have, Panarello said. She
also likes a pre-function
areaone separate from the
main reception area where
guests can enjoy a cocktail
and conversation.
if the hall doesnt have
a caterer, put that next on
the list. Look at menus as a
starting point. If you dont
want a cookie-cutter meal,
look for a caterer with a
variety of options. A vendor
should direct the client. They
should be able to take your
information and specialize it
for you, Panarello said.
look at a photographers
website to get a feel for
his or her style, and view
multiple albums. Photos
should vary from wedding to
wedding, and that includes
poses and locations, said
Columbus photographer
Simon Yao. My goal is to
create a work of art for my
clients. I dont treat them
cookie cutter, he said. And
meet them in person. Its
who you feel comfortable
with, he added.
A vendor should

choose a gown now, said
Kristin Cooke of Big rock
Little rooster in the Short
north, to allow time for the
gown to arrive (which can
take four to six months).
Some brides believe they
shouldnt make a decision
until they try on 50 gowns,
she said. It is oK to stop
when you love a gown. You
may not have the sunbeam
and angel moment. It may
just be Wow, I like how I
look and this is how I want
to look for my groom on my
wedding day. Your dress
may also help determine the
feel of your entire wedding.
I feel like it sets the tone
for the whole look, said
Courtney Leister of the Arena
Districts Girls in White
Dresses. If its lace, maybe
you want to see lace overlay
on invites or the cake.
Before you start on fow-
ers, there are a few things
you need to have done. one
thing that we run into are
brides who dont have a ven-
ue, dress or colors, said Katie
rodgers of Bloomtastic in Up-
per Arlington. And its not a
lot for us to work with. Bring
a picture of your wedding
gown and color swatches.
There are dozens of shades of
purple, rodgers points out, so
bring examples. Dont have a
color swatch of fabric? Go to
the hardware store and grab
a paint swatch. Also, dont
just think about colors, look
at patterns you like, too,
said Dee Conrad, of Petals &
Leaves in Powell. And come
with a budget in mind, but
willingness to be fexible. Its
the number one thing local
forists agree onthat many
brides are uneducated when
it comes to the cost of fow-
ers. Many publications will
tell you to reserve 10 percent
of your budget, but often that
isnt enough, Conrad said.
Nows the time to ask
your bridal party to be in
the wedding, recommends
wedding planner Adrianne
Mellen ramstack of Adrianne
Elizabeth LLC in German
Village. Then, ask the readers
and others involved in the
ceremony soon after. You
want them to feel special and
not like an afterthought, she
said.

Even a picture of your dress.
All those elements can show
a cake designer what your
wedding feels like. And let
the bakery know what you
want to try. Many bakeries do
standard favor tasting, but if
theres something special you
want, speak up before the
appointment. (There may be
a charge for that.) Its also
worth asking if the bakery
does group tastings. That way
you may get more favors than
normal, Koivisto said.
For invitations and save-
the-date designs, bring color
swatches and samples from
your forist, suggested Maegan
richards of Paper occasions
in Dublin. The save-the-date
invites are a great place to
put a wedding website, added
ramstack. If you have it, then
push people to it to look for
updates, she said.
DonT FEEL ThE BrIDESMAID DrESSES need
to replicate your wedding gown. I dont like
matchy-matchy, said Leister from Girls in White
Dresses. The bride should be a different cut
than the bridesmaids. The two looks should
complement, but dont need to mirror each other.
Attendants should place the order within the
same week of each other, Cooke advised. This
guarantees dresses are from the same dye lots.

Pick wedding bands
about six weeks before your
wedding, recommended Mike
Cress, of Denig Jewelers in
Worthington. Give yourself
at least a month. That way
youve got time to make
adjustments when the rings
come in, he said, explaining
some can take seven to 10
days to order.
Get your wedding license.
In Franklin County, a license
is only good for 60 days, so
wait until about two months
beforehand, said Sabrina

Before the invites go out,
group guests into eights

The other thing you should
wait to do? Change your last
name. Wait until you get
back from your honeymoon,
Suri recommended. new

and credit cards, can take a

send invites. I like people
to rSVP a month in advance
of the wedding, ramstack
said. That means at two
months prior, invites must
be in guests mailboxes. But
dont shoot for much earlier
than that, she warned: if you
give people too much time to
respond, they tend to forget.
Dont just think
about colors, look
at patterns you

Engagement
Capital-Style.Com Winter/Spring 2012 32
1. Give it Meaning
Think of places that hold
a special memoryyour
frst date, where you
got engaged or a usual
hangout, such as a park,
concert venue or even your
neighborhood. I want them
to be emotionally involved
in their pictures, Derkin
said. Picking a familiar spot,
he added, creates a level of
comfortkey when many
tend to feel awkward being
photographed.
SnapShot: Consider
incorporating props if you
dont have a special setting,
suggested Columbus and
Miami photographer Amanda
Julca. For example, one
couplea photographer
and musicianbrought an
old-fashioned camera for the
bride and a guitar for the
groom.
2. Create Interest
If there is no one spot that
means something to you (or
one that will photograph
well), think about places
that just look cool. I like
to pick visually interesting
places, said German Village
photographer Jacquelyn
Poussot.
SnapShot: Try St. Charles
Preparatory School on East
Broad Street with its unique
architecture, or the Union
Station Arch in the Arena
District. For a different view
of the Short North, Powell
photographer Nicole Dixon
heads to an orange wall with
a bright turquoise door on
West Poplar Avenue.
3. Get active
Feeling a bit camera shy?
Try planning a small activity
or pick a lively location to
keep your mind off of the
lens. Grab ice cream, set up
a picnic or pop a bottle of
bubbly. Julca took one fun,
but nervous, couple to the
Ohio State Fair. It let them
have fun and play around
so they wouldnt feel as
uncomfortable, Julca said.

E

pictures are like

Couples can get
comfortable in front of the
camera, and photographers get
to know their best looks. Its
about learning peoples natural
laugh, and differentiating
between whats polite and
whats real, said Benjamin
Derkin of Derks Works
Photography in Columbus.
Plus, it offers couples a chance
to snap a few less-formal
shots before their wedding
day. But where to do it? Local

SnapShot: Poussot heads
to Yellow Springs, Ohio,
about an hour out of town,
for its charm. Theres a huge
sunfower feld shell have
couples play around in, and
then after stop by Youngs
Dairy for an old-fashioned ice
cream cone.
4. think ahead
Poussot had one couple bring
a chalkboard to write their
wedding date on, and they
then used the images as a
save-the-date card. Finding
an extra purpose makes
it higher value, Poussot
explained. Another couple
printed images from their
engagement shoot on the
back of place cards for an
extra personal touch at the
reception.
SnapShot: Consider coor-
dinating with your invites
so the look of your shoot
matches your stationary,
Poussot said. For example, try
using a piece of foam core to
recreate a design image from
your invite.
5. theme It
Still at a loss for a location?
Refer to the theme of your
wedding. Is it a garden cer-
emony? Is it urban? Or rustic?
Then consider a spot that will
ft that feel. A couples whole
wedding is based around a
style, Julca said. Sometimes
what works is to think about
the style of their wedding
and carry that through.
SnapShot: For an urban
vibe, try outside The Buggy-
works, a simple setting with
an old warehouse feel. For
garden, head to Inniswood
Metro Gardens or the Frank-
lin Park Conservatory. Give
it country fair at Bryn Du
Mansion in Granville, which
offers a barn on the grounds
and occasional polo matches
on weekends.
Youve got the
setting, now get
the look
Coordinate
The bride and groom should
complement each other, but
that doesnt mean matchy
matchy, said photographer
Jacquelyn Poussot. Pick col-
ors and patterns that work
together, and dress as if
you are attending the same
party. Brides shouldnt wear
cocktail attire with grooms
in a T-shirt and shorts.
Contrast
Dont be afraid to contrast
your environment, Pous-
sot said. Its OK to look a
bit out of place (with the
setting, not each other), so
wear that suit on a farm or
a cocktail dress against a
grungy brick wall.
Color
Pick neutrals, recommended
photographer Amanda
Julca, and try to avoid black
and white, which dont
always show up well in
photos. Go for grey, beige
or pale shades of color. And
think timeless. You dont
want to look back at your
clothes 20 years from now
and wonder, What was I
thinking? Julca added.
Complement
Brides should dress more on
the feminine side. Think
about your fgure and aim
to accent the narrowest
part of your body, Pous-
sot said. And stay in your
style. Dont do anything that
doesnt feel like you.

Big Picture
Be yourself: Your hair and
makeup look should simply
be a more polished version
of you. Dont venture off too
far from you, said Genevieve
Francia, hair training depart-
ment coordinator for The
Charles Penzone Family of
Salons. You want to look back
at the pictures and say I look
pretty. I look like myself.
Hair
Practice makes Perfect:
Wear your practice hairstyle
for an entire day. This lets you
see if you like the way it feels,
and if it holds well, Francia
said. Also, consider taking
pictures of your hairstyle
with your wedding dress on
to see if you like the overall
look. Plan on scheduling the
dry-run appointment up to
two months before the big
day, Francia recommended,
to allow time for changes if
necessary.
Makeup
Be Picky: Start looking for a
makeup artist six months in
advance. Columbus makeup
artist MelissaRoshan advises
brides to check samples from
at least two makeup artists and
schedule trial sessions with
each to decide who is best.
She suggests fnding pictures
in bridal magazines of makeup
you likeand dont likeon
models whose hair color and
skin tone mirrors yours. A
good makeup artist under-
stands applying makeup that
is fawless for photography
purposes, but still being able
to make you look natural,
she said.
Waxing

know your Body: Discuss
hair removal options with
your stylist far in advance,
suggested Spa at River Ridge
Manager Rhonda Dant. From
simple procedures such as
brows and lips to more-intense
bikini or Brazilian waxes, try
each well in advance to know
how your body will react.

Lashes
Go Glam: Weve found a
lot of brides think ahead and
start extreme lashes, said Jena
Skowronski of The Charles
Penzone Salons. This is a
semi-permanent eyelash exten-
sion, applied lash-by-lash, that
naturally wears off with your
eyelashes.

dress to set the tone of your

I always ask brides for
three adjectives that describe
the aura they want, said
Kristin Cooke, manager of
Big Rock Little Rooster in the
Short North. For example, a
bride asking for glamorous,
sophisticated and chic may
feel best in a sleek, structured
fabric. With that picture
painted, we can guide them
toward a look.
Vintage, glamour and
country are the three most
frequently heard adjectives

which bridal experts say are
popular in todays style.
l Most brides are currently
opting for ivory or
champagne instead of stark
white gowns. The darker
shades of off-white colors
pair well with different
textures like chiffon, satin
and tulle.
l Looking for a veil
alternative? Try a birdcage.
You can even start with
a traditional veil for the
ceremony and swap it for a
birdcage during the reception
for a fashion-forward look.

ennifer Rose Diehl
was planning her
own 2010 wed-
ding when the idea
to make a bou-
quet from vintage
brooches hit her.
I knew that I wanted
something different than fresh
fowers, she said. I wanted
something that would last
forever.
Others were dazzled. And
within months, country star
Miranda Lambert was carrying
a Diehl creation down the aisle.
Now, Diehl is thrilling brides
nationwide, and shes left her
corporate job to run her bou-
quet business, The Ritzy Rose,
fulltime.
The Ritzy Rose creates
custom brooch bouquets. Each,
Diehl says, is a refection of the
woman who will carry it, hand-
made with hundreds of baubles
and beads, family heirlooms
and fea market fnds. A single
bouquet can take months to
create, and costs between $275
and $675.
The special touch for one of
Diehls brides, for example, was
the counter her umpire grandfa-
ther held in his hands for years.
It meant so much to have it in
my bouquetthat and the spe-
cial brooches that my husbands
fve aunts sent from Italy, said
Jess Savaggio of Houston.
Savaggio loved Diels creation
so much that she took it to
the Vatican to be blessed. But
it wasnt divine intervention
that led her to this Columbus
designer: It was an article in
Us Weekly featuring Lamberts
bouquet.
From the moment that
happened, it has all been a
whirlwind, Diehl said. Mi-
randa threw a shower, and all of
her friends and family collected
pieces and gave her one for the
bouquet.
That publicity, along with ar-
ticles in Vogue, InStyle and Elle,
have clients calling from around
the world.

City girl was wooed to Central
Ohio in 2005 for a job with
Abercrombie & Fitch. Three
years later, Limited Brands
was calling. Diehl left her job
at Bath and Body Works to
devote all of her attention to
her company.
It was a little scary, she
said.
Now, though, she has cre-
ated 60 bouquets, and has
orders for more than twice
that. I have so many orders I
just cant keep up, she said.
The Ritzy Rose is a labor
of love for Diehl and her hus-
band, Jason. Shes color and
texture. Hes facts and fgures.
But most weekends, you can
fnd the couple together at a
fea market or garage sales,
searching for antique pieces
that bring the bouquets to life.
Diehl cant say for sure
where her appreciation for
preserving the past came from.
What she does know, however,
is that the future is bright.
Up next? Boutonnieres.
We, she said, want to cre-

Five ways to add a touch of color

Ready to give that
bold lip trend a try?
You can defnitely

ter explained. Or, have

jewelry
feathers
Metallics
Metallics are a fun
way to enhance a
neutral dress. Add a
brooch to a dress, or
sash for that touch of
glitter, Leister recom-
mended. Shoes are
another place to bring
in the glitz.
A necklace, earrings
or ring can add a
dash of color. But skip
the bracelets, Kruse
suggested, as they
can sometimes snag
dresses.
Feathers can be
used in hair styles or
bouquets. Try a small
feather in your hair to
draw the eye upward,
suggested Wafa Laban
of Elegant Bride in
Dublin. Peacock feath-
ers provide rich blue
and green hues that
stand out against a
black or gray dress.
Adding a ribbon
around the waist of
a simple gown is an
easy way to add color,
said Lil Stalnaker of
Wendys Bridal in
Dublin. Kathy Kruse,
owner of Trumping-
ton Bridal House in
Westerville, has seen
brides create custom
sashes with a color
that matches their
wedding-day accents.

ast years weddings had Courtney
Leister seeing purplelots of it. But
now, said the owner of Girls in White
Dresses in the Arena District, its given
way to neutrals like mocha, navy and
black. But while such classic shades can give bridal
parties a sophisticated, timeless look, they can also
leave the feeling that something is missing. A nice
touch? Adding a single splash of mood-creating
color. It allows the bride to bring in some modern
pops of color that will not overshadow the entire
dayor pictures 10 years later, Leister said. Heres
how experts say to do it right.
Pair pink with navy for a perfect duo
Courtney Leister of Girls in White Dresses suggests
trying these color combos on for size.

ate laughs as she recalls where she met her husband Matt: at a
bar in the Arena District. Kate, a business and fashion manager
for a local photographer, refused to give Matt, whos in market-

remember my name and youll fnd me, she recalled. He found her the
next day on Facebook and asked her out every week for two months until
she fnally said yes. The couple weathered Matts battle with multiple my-

leo, a merchandise planner, used her wedding gown to
set the tone for her Oct. 16, 2010 wedding to Jonathan,
an attorney. Playing off her black sash, everything was
black and white with touches of purple to accentuate a
modern romantic rooftop wedding she said perfectly ft their style.
The whole day was fawless, Kleo said. Their macaroon wedding
favors were a honeymoon hint from Jonathanhe planned their trip
to Paris as a surprise to Kleo, who had always wanted to travel there.

onna, a freelance photographer, and Jason, a radiologist, met
at work six years ago. We were friends and just kind of fell in
love with each other over our favorite things, which are food
and wine and travel, she said. So it was only ftting that their
intimate and festive July 29, 2011 wedding was inspired by the things that
brought them together. We designed the whole thing based on how we like
to live, said Donna, a Westerville native. Heavy hors doeuvre tables carried
a his-and-her theme, with everything fried on one table (hush puppies and
fried chicken as a nod to Jasons southern roots) and Mediterranean-style
fare on the other (for Donna). They added a raw bar for fun, their favorite
wines, his-and-her signature cocktails, and a dessert bar with cupcakes
favored in bourbon chocolate (for Jason) and champagne belini (for
Donna), among other sweets. We wanted people to say, Oh, this is totally
them, Donna said.

ristin did not expect to be called in on her day off for a
mandatory meeting at the corporate wellness company
she works for. She also didnt expect to fnd Kenneth,
an insurance underwriter, waiting for her instead of her
coworkers, ready to propose. My coworkers were in on it, Kristin
recalled. My parents were hiding in another room with a sea of our
friends. The couple, who maintain a long-distance relationship
between Columbus and Chicago, were married on Aug. 6, 2011. The
wedding, Kristin hoped, was classic and romantic. I wanted that
old-fashioned feeling, she said. Along with that, she obeyed a classic
bridal tradition of something old, using her grandmothers earrings as
a brooch on her bouquet.

Valentines Day snowstorm in Chicago nearly derailed Tims proposal
plans. Quick thinking forced the North Campus-area bartender to
switch from a fountain near the site of Lollapaloozaa music festival
the two attended togetherto the art museum. It was just as special,
said Jackie, as both art and music play a big part in their relationship. Their May
21, 2011 wedding was sprinkled with personal touches that proved that: tables
named after favorite festivals and concert venues, concert ticket seating cards
and a ceremony hosted by a mutual friend who read notes written on the Beatles
The White Album. Another special element? A fower Jackie wore in her hair
that was made of lace from her mothers wedding dress. I wanted my big, girly,
classy wedding, Jackie said. We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding, but not
a garden wedding. We wanted it modern and thats why we chose COSI. I loved
that we could see the city skyline.

m defnitely a nontraditional kind of girl, said Laura, a
buyer for American Eagle, who married Adeel, a dentist,
on July 23, 2010. Laura wanted to create an air of whimsy
for their Franklin Park Conservatory wedding. I am a
really crafty person and love the colors of yellow, Laura said. The
yellow balloons in their wedding photos were last-minute accessories
that Laura bought two days before the wedding. Looking at Style Me
Pretty and other inspiration boards, there are always so many good
photo ops with something unpredictable, she recalled. So I got
two giant yellow balloons. The couple, who met at Ohio State, also
wanted to show their love for Columbus, so guests enjoyed Jenis Ice
Cream and an appearance by the OSU alumni band.

auren, who works in the development offce of an all-girls school,
remembers every moment of her classic Columbus wedding to
fnancial analyst Matthew on July 9, 2011. A lot of times, people
say, I dont remember my wedding day, it went by so fast, she said.
But it really felt like we could enjoy the whole day. The couple, who live in
New York City, knew Columbus wasnt a home base for many of their guests. So
they wanted to make the wedding worth the trip. They made the event black-
tie optional to give guests a chance to dress up. We loved the look of everyone
being so dressed up. It added to the feel of making it be so special, Lauren
said. But perhaps the biggest hit of the night came at the end. Laurens father
put together a scotch and cigar bar on the croquette court as a post-reception
gathering. I think that was the real hit of the evening, Lauren laughed.

essica felt something for Seth right from the start. I knew he was
different, Jessica said, recalling how she felt their frst weeks of
dating. I think it was pretty instant. The couple, who both work for
Big Lots, were married May 14, 2011 at the Ohio Statehouse. It was
the perfect location, Jessica said, because it gave them a sophisticated setting
to host a ceremony (Seth is Jewish and Jessica is Lutheran, so a standard
religious location was out), as well as space for a large reception. And
although everything that day was perfectfrom the wow-worthy fowers to
the mini-tiramisu cake she had made for Sethnothing trumped the frst
moment they saw each other. It was so special, Jessica said. Hes not really
an emotional guy, but he was crying like a baby.

uring a trip to Spain, Kevin, a creative director, proposed in Spanish
to Alexandra, who owns a public relations business, in a 16th-
century park in Madrid. That explains the reasons behind several
Spanish nuances during their June 4, 2011 wedding, such as a
famenco guitarist during the ceremony. And it wasnt until she walked down
the aisle that Kevin discovered his soon-to-be wife was wearing her favorite
color, red. It was pretty funny when I walked into the room, Alexandra
recalled. He loved it. Hes still talking about it. Another non-traditional but
personal touch was the couples gift registry. They wanted to create a celebration
of lovefor each other, their family and friends, as well as the community. So
the couple registered with local charities instead of for gifts, asking guests to
make donations. In all, their wedding raised more than $5,000 for others. We
wanted to share our love for our community, Alexandra said. And we felt that
registering with charities was a great way to do that.
