    The Red Ribbon Story. Enrique Kiki Camarena grew up with hopes and dreams of making a difference. He worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. While working undercover for the DEA in Mexico, Camarena was tortured and killed by drug traffickers. To honor Camarenas memory and work, parents began the Red Ribbon Campaign in 1988 as an effort to protect children from the dangers of drugs.
