at 0900. Lt. Dorey with three light tanks reported to the 3rd Battalion 105th

Order No. 53 with attached overlays was received at 0530. Lt. Genio

looking T:;;.napag !I.arbor at 0900. Light tank !l73 of Co D 762nd Tk Bn had a track
blown off and \'laS destroyed later by our tanks to keep Je..ps from using it as a
pillbox. Two men were killed in their attempt to evacuate the tank. lIediUln
tank #43 also completely destroyed by eneIny action. Tanks returned to tank OP
and did as l:uch as daylight would permit as they are badly in need
of maintenance. Field Order No. 55 with attached 0-2 SUIIJr.1B.ry was .received at
lSOO.
7 July 1944
A Jal' counter-attack was started between 0300 and 0400. An enemy patrol
penetr-.::.ted the perimeter and three were killed by our outpost guards. The camp
was alerted and tanks moved inunediately to the Regiments that they were assigned
to to help stop and break up the counter-attack. Lt. Lansford with a platoon of
mediums, Lt. Guffey (Co D 766th Tic Bn) with a platoon of lights, and Lt. Phalon
with a platoon of lights reported to 105th Infantry for it 't';asin that sector
that the Japs had broken through. Lt. Williams with five ,lilsdiUIJlS reported to the
1st Battalion 106th Infantry. Lt. Williams with five lilBdiurns and Lt. Phalon with
five lights were ordered to' stay at the tront all night along with the Liaison
Officer. Tanks put up a line 300 yards with infantry line of machine guns, rifle
men and 37mm gun crews between the tanks. During the day's operations seven
light tanks and one !!1ediUIn were .knocked out. The men at the ell dug more outposts
and the guards for the night were doubled.
8 July 1944

One platoon of mediums and two platoons of lights \'Tere sent for.'1ard to re
lieve the tanks that had stayed on the front lines duriDg the night. J'ield
Order No. 56 was received at 0700. In acoordance with this order, Major Aldon
M. Hoffman the Battalion Commander, moved the CP to TA 186-N where the battalion
went into Div1aion reserve for the 4th l4arine Division. The first t8.llks were
relieved at 1030 and all tanks were relieved duriDg the day.

,All tanka are being womed on by crew members. As Battalion Maintenanoe
oalled them they were put in as good a tighting oon41tion as possible. . Every
ettort \'las made by battalion and company maintenance to reclaim any equipment
that might yet be useful. As of this date 17 light tanks and 5 mediwns have been
lost in action. One halt-traok has been oompletely destroyed.
The Battalion Commander went. to 27th Division Headquarters at 0730 tor any
orders they might issue. He ?TaS told that the battalion would probably partici
pate in another operation but was not told whether it would be Tinian or Guam.
At 0830 a staff offioers meeting was called by the Battalion Commander do dis
cuaa the operation ot the oamp and the improvement of health facilities. All
oompetes started making fly traps which VIere needed very badly. All battalion
personnel were under a maintenance and rehabilitation
Battalion personnel Vlere still under rehabilitation prograrn.. The area was
sPMlJed with a kerosene and creosote mixture. One mediwn and three light 'tants
were recovered trom the field but were found stripped of acme essential e.q,uipment.
12 JUlY 1944
The CP remained at T.A. 186-N and continued the rehabilitat ion program. A
bOlllb 41spoaal squad oleared the area of duds. Tin and tarpaulin tops were put
on kitohens and aides were screened in with Jap mosC]!J. ito netting to improve
the preparation of food. The first of daily swimming' parties was ol'ganized at
1600 for reoreation.
13 July 1944
The maintenance and rehabilitation of IiJen and equipment "',as continued.
Corul rook vms hauled in around kitchens and the battalion area to help combat
flies and mud. All companies have set up separate messes.

J'irst word was received over the radio the first Au.erican troops had hit

Headquarters where.they will stay until the operation on Tinian is finished.

t urnea to the CP. The tanks were detached trom the 165th Infantry 'ftlCG. One
light platoon. under S!Sst. Tom'1'h.eos and 'one medium platoon under Lt. 111111._
with liaison reported to the 106th Infantry at 1000.

overlay and Annex A t9 7ield Order 'No. 59 regarding continuance ot mop-up opera
tions of Saipan reoeived at 0615. Lt. Lansford with platoon ot 111ediums ,was re
lieved at 1700 to come back to the tank, area tor the night.

The CP remained at '1'A lS6-N. Personnel from eaoh company ot this battalion
attended a mine deomonstration on a medium tank in tlie vicinity ot TA. lS6-N at
0800. At 0800 a meeting was called by the Battalion S-3 to discuss the packing
and loading ot company equipment to leave the island. All personnel attached
to infantry units in the mop-QP operation were released at 1230 to .prepare to
leave the i.land. At 2300 Company "])II 766th '.rank Battalion, Headquarters Cqmpany
(less Battalion Supply) and a detachment ot CODq>any "D" 762nd 'l'aDk Battalion
loaded on truoks togo the dock. arrived at ,!'ana,pag Harbor and loaded
on LOTts and were taken out to the usa Xemnore.
