Competences imparted: MSc program in Electrical Engineering

Competence Profile (MSc) A graduate from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has a research-based education at a high technological level that qualifies the graduate to take on specialized business functions and participate in scientific development. A masters degree in Engineering also gives access to further education within research (e.g. research positions or a PhD). The graduate has: basic understanding and knowledge of the natural sciences and technological principles. The graduate can use this knowledge for innovative purposes such as solving technological problems in business or societal contexts. extensive technological expertise within a specific area and knowledge of current trends and opportunities within this area. a clear professional profile which includes elements of current research at an international level. The graduate has the ability to use this knowledge in developing new ideas and solving new problems. a thorough understanding of how elements of a technological problem interact. The graduate is able to develop relevant models, systems and processes to solve the problem in question using creative analysis and modeling. the ability to assess and delimit complex issues, put them into a broad professional and societal context, and, on this basis, propose relevant courses of action. the ability to combine technological expertise with knowledge of economics, management, organization and project work. The graduate is able to examine technological solutions in a business and societal perspective.

General competences (MSc)


The graduate: is proficient in both oral and written communication, and is able to present professional results in a convincing manner commands technical problem solving at a high level, primarily through project-related approaches. The graduate is able to handle all phases of a project, including the drafting of project timelines, design and solution proposals, and documentation can use and assess technological solutions, while applying principles of ethics and sustainability is experienced in abstract mathematical thinking and can apply theory to solve practical problems.

Formal conditions (MSc)


Admission requirements: BSc Eng (180 ECTS points) Program duration: The masters program covers two years of full-time study (equal to 120 ECTS). This framework ensures that all graduates acquire professional core competencies through technological specialization (minimum 30 ECTS) and a masters thesis (minimum 30 ECTS). Program participants also acquire specialized knowledge through elective courses (minimum 30 ECTS). The program also includes 30 elective ECTS credit points. Title: Master of Science in Engineering, cand. polyt. Further education: Research, PhD (3 years) Executive order: The masters program complies with executive order BEK 338 dated May 6, 2004 (and subsequent amendments) issued by the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Electrical Engineering is an extensive field ranging from acoustics and automation to electronics, signal processing and electrical energy systems with a strong focus on the correlation between theory and application. The Acoustics study-line is concerned with sound, vibration and hearing. The core fields of this multidisciplinary program are Physical Acoustics, Architectural Acoustics and Audiological Acoustics. You acquire a profound knowledge of one or more of the following: 1) generation of sound, outdoor sound propagation, room acoustics and sound transmission, 2) acoustic measurement techniques, signal processing, electroacoustic transducers and sound reproduction, 3) human hearing, perception of sound, auditory signal processing, and noise-induced nuisance. The MSc thesis project usually involves theoretical/numerical modeling and experimental validation.

The study line gives you the opportunity to work in various domains of the core fields: Control, Robot Technology and Automation. The MSc thesis project involves theoretical/numerical models and the analysis of practical problems; it often includes experimental tests and may be carried out in cooperation with a company. This provides in-depth theoretical knowledge and experience of practical problem-solving. Graduates of this study-line typically find work in the energy industry, in manufacturing or consultancy.

The basic technical disciplines comprise electric technology, high-voltage technology, power electronics, regulation and automation and competence in information and communication technology. This study line is anchored in the wind-turbine, power-electronics and energy industry. The MSc thesis is typically based on the analysis and design of a specific task and is often carried out in cooperation with a company. Graduates of this study-line typically find work in the expanding Danish energy industry in a power-electronics, wind-turbine or energy company or consultancy.

The Space Technology study-line covers many aspects of space missions and applications. These include ideas for new missions or applications; the development of airborne prototypes of instruments; the development of flight hardware for missions; and the processing and utilization of data from satellite missions for applications such as control, mapping, climate and space research. Among the fields covered in this interdisciplinary line are: advanced digital and analog electronics, signal processing, image analysis, system analysis, programming, microwave technique, electromagnetic and statistical methods for data processing and interpretation and space physics. It focuses on space instruments such as star cameras, magnetometers and X-ray instruments; electromagnetic systems such as antennas, radar and radiometer systems; attitude control systems; on-board software; and the processing and the interpretation of satellite-data by signal-processing, electromagnetic and statistic methods. Integral to this line are the application-based project-management models used in space projects. These skills may be acquired through a student satellite project. The MSc thesis project is typically carried out in association with national or international companies or spacetechnology agencies. Graduates of this study-line find employment in space or other high-tech companies, often as development engineers.

The Wireless Engineering study-line covers components and systems for wireless transfer and data-collection. It ranges from component to system level in the following fields: advanced digital and analog electronics, digital communication, digital and analog signal processing, signal processing of non-linear systems, system analysis, programming, continuous electromagnetism, microwave technology, antennas, antenna measurements in anechoic chambers and wireless communication. Graduates of this line are well-equipped to exploit the vast potential of wireless media. Examples include: mobile phones, satellite phones, wireless monitor systems, satellite communication, GPS positioning, hearing aids, remotecontrolled car-doors, anti-collision systems, BroBizz, wireless networks (hotspots), wireless mice, burglar and attack alarms, maritime emergency systems and RFID. Such systems use wireless communication standards such as WiMAX, Bluetooth, WCDMA, DVB-H, ZigBee and UWB. The MSc thesis project is typically based on the solution of a specific problem in one of the above fields and is often carried out in cooperation with a company or as part of a research project. Graduates of this line will find commercial or academic employment in satellite, mobile and tele-communications, radar and navigation systems and RF and microwave circuit design. Top students may go on to a PhD degree at DTU.
