Skiing Techniques
Classic style
diagonal stride
flat terrain Running action with parallel skis, kicking and gliding with each stride; poles are planted alternately on the opposite side to the kick.

Skate skiing (freestyle)

diagonal V single-poling coach's skate granny skate V1 offfset skate
Similar to classic herringbone but with a short glide on each ski; used in racing only on very steep hills.

three-step diagonal Three (four) strides to one pole push. four-step diagonal double poling
Legs are not moved, all propulsive force is provided by the two poles used together; may be combined with strides in the one-step and two-step double pole techniques.

Slightly off-set double-pole on every other leg. Used mostly for hill climbing in competitions.

uphill terrain

side step herringbone

tight diagonal

Skis are used perpendicular to the slope.

Skis are "V"ed outwards. V2 Flat land diagonal technique; employed 1-skate with much shorter glides. Wassberg Skis are turned inwards with the tips nearly together to create drag and thus reduce descent speed. Implies moving the skis round the turn V2 alternate from a diagonal stride. open field skate Lifting the ski while double poling. 2-Skate Transfers the weight onto the turning Mogren forward ski as in ice skating. Using the trailing ski as a rudder. Done from a downhill snowplow.

snowplow
downhill terrain

Double-pole on every leg. Used on the flat for accelerating and on moderate uphills. Requires a good balance.

tip-turn kick-turn skate-turn skid-turn stem christie alpine-turn

Double-pole on every other leg. Used on the flat, while climbing and on gentle downhills. Skating without using the poles. Used exclusively on downhills at very high speed.
