The bags are packed,
supplies purchased, the kids are
out the door. Except one thing
is different this year; theyre
not coming back at the end of
the day. Sending the youngest
child to kindergarten can be an
unsettling experience for many
mothers. But sending that
same child, as a young adult,
off to college can have varying
effects on moms and dads.
Its called the Empty Nest
Syndrome and brings mixed
emotions. Not having to wait
up until the wee hours of the
morning worrying about all the
things a parent worries about
at 2:00 am can be liberating.
Not having to fix meals to
those hungry, growing boys is
time freeingnot to mention
fewer trips to the grocery. The
washer and dryer may feel
neglected as you try to gather
up enough clothes to make a
full load. The dishwasher also
gets a break as it is shocking
to realize how many dishes,
plates, cups, spoons, and forks
a teenager can accumulate in
his room. And we no longer
need to watch where we walk
to avoid the endless array of
shoes, back packs and sporting
equipment that littered our
floors by the back door. One
couple related it to being
newlyweds again.
Some look forward to this
milestone as they will buy a
sports car, clean out closets
and redecorate. For many the
change is bittersweet. Most
people enjoy the social aspects
of seeing the kids friends and
talking with other parents at
school activities. After living
family life for at least eighteen
years, the meal sharing and
spontaneous laughter is missed
in an empty nest. But the high
school drama, fundraising,
and homework isnt. And
the money saved from prom
dresses and yet another tee-
shirt emblazoned with a saying
can be put towards college
textbooks.
In some ways, the transition
is gradual. Many high school
seniors are so busy that they
are barely seen by their parents.
Communication is mostly by
text and the occasional note left
on the refrigerator. Not a whole
lot different from when they
are no longer living at home.
In fact it may take a couple of
days to fully comprehend that
they arent sleeping in their
own beds anymore.
When you are in your
thirties and have young
children at your feet, this may
seem like a fantasy. I recall
reminding my young doctor
and his nurse, who at the time
seemed a bit envious, that
they needed to wait their turn.
Yet when the moment finally
arrives, life seems to have
slipped by unnoticed. Twenty
years ago a coworker told
me how she cried all the way
home from Bowling Green
after she and her husband
dropped off their only son.
Situations change, but feelings
stay the same. And its not
only the humans who miss
the graduate; there are several
pets that have been known to
go into depression after their
cherished companion has
left. What do you do with all
that quiet? Re-establishing a
relationship with your spouse
can be challenging as you
forget what you talked about
before you had kids. The
reward does come. When you
see the child you raised mature
into someone who you can
now have adult conversations
with, you know you have
been successful. As with any
new experience, change can
be scary. Often its the fear of
the unknown that makes us
uneasy. But as the song goes
every new beginning is some
beginnings end. If youve
recently achieved an empty
nest, enjoy it. Sometimes the
birds fly back.

September has finally brought
some weather relief for area
gardeners. During the summer
drought I had difficultly deciding if I
was over watering or under watering
the patio planters and window
boxes. It is for sure I was not doing
it right as some plants are just now
starting to look good. During my
bike outings, I found some wonderful
gardens and others that looked pretty
much like mine. The Coldwater end of the bicycle path looks more than adequate, and as I
studied what I liked about it, I noticed that the plants in the raised planter were planted in short
vertical rows rather than the traditional circular, or even just along the edges. There is a row of
dianthus that resembles small carnations, and side-by-side boxwoods on each end. I liked what I
saw and am wondering how I can incorporate this in one of my gardens. The area is looking very
nice with the inviting benches setting on a paved area, surrounded by colorful plants and trees,
and a water fountain. It makes me smile with pride for my hometown.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could.Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated

Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found

If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.

Question: We are getting ready to relocate. Is there something that we can do to help our pets with
the move?
Answer: Newsituations can be stressful for your pets. Pets are creatures of habit. Pets like the stability
and routine in their lives. Some pets take moving in stride because they are comfortable with the familiarity of
their social group (people, other pets) and as long as their daily routine is relatively the same. Older dogs, cats,
pets with chronic illnesses, and pets that have a very constant lifestyle may be more sensitive to the change.
Here are some tips to help:
* Changes in scheduling or interaction with family members should begin prior to the move. This allows
the changes in a familiar setting.
* Pack your pets sleeping areas, toys, and other items last. Give your cat a roomout of sight and hearing
to the packing process since they are most sensitive to environment changes.
* Play with your pet between packing boxes. This helps to desensitize them to the boxes and moving
process.
* Make sure that your pet has a microchip implant. This will allow themto be identifed if they do escape
duringthemovingprocess. If your pet already has amicrochipimplant, besuretoupdatethecontact information
before the move.
* Be sure to have a carrier to secure your pet in during the move.
* Put out your pets familiar items: bedding, kennel, food dishes, toys, litter boxes, etc., in a room with
familiar furniture and then release your pet fromtheir carrier.
* Sometimes it is best to keep your pet isolated to one room in the house to let them adapt slowly. This
is an especially good thing to do while the other rooms are being unpacked. You can then gradually introduce
your pet to other rooms.
* One way to increase your cats acceptance of newterritory is to use scents or pheromones to familiarize
the area for your pet. These can be obtained fromyour veterinarian.
* Spend time with your pet in the new area created for them and accompany them throughout the new
home the frst fewdays. This allows you to encourage and reinforce desirable behavior and interrupt and deter
undesirable behavior.
* Before the move, get a copy of your pets medical records to take with you. It is also a good idea to locate
a veterinarian in the area you are relocating ahead of time in case of emergencies.
Positive reinforcement and taking baby steps are keys to minimizing your pets anxiety from a move.
Introduce new things with familiar things including people and new animals. Keep their routine as relatively
familiar as possible. Be patient and give your pet time to adjust to the newhome.

Stanley m. Shellabarger, 92, of Rockford, died at 7:40 a.m.
on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at the Laurels of Shane hill,
Rockford, where he was a patient. he was born on August 26,
1920, in Brookville, Ohio, to Ray and Arkana (Crouch) Shella-
barger. On November 9, 1945, he married Louise Rowland, and
she survives in Rockford. Services were held on Monday, Sep-
tember 10, 2012, at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral home in Rockford,
with Pastor Marvin Schwartz officiating. Burial followed in Riv-
erside Cemetery, Rockford. Military rites at the gravesite will be

Carl E. Cook, Age 83, of Celina, passed away at his residence
on September 5, 2012. he was born November 7, 1928 in Rock-
ford to the late Grant L. & Lena Floe ( Snyder ) Cook. he married

Coldwater Village Council con-
sidered an ordinance to resolve the
question of ownership of the depot
in the park. The Community Picnic
Association CPA) owns the build-
ing and the village owns the ground

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more

Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.

School is back in session. If you have school-age children, youre probably busy getting themacclimated
to another year of hitting the books. But the school years go by quickly, so it wont be long before your kids are
ready to head off to college. Will you be fnancially prepared to help them?
Its certainly a challenge, especially given rising costs of higher education. Consider these fgures fromthe
College Board: For the 2011-2012 school year, the average cost (including tuition, fees, roomand board) was
$17,131 per year for an in-state student attending a public, four-year college or university. For a student attending
a private four-year school, the comparable average cost was $38,589 annually. And these numbers are likely
to increase in the years ahead.
So, what can you do to help meet the high costs of higher education? For starters, you need to save and
invest early and often. And youll also want to choose investments that are particularly well suited for college.
Here are a fewsuggestions:
* 529 plan When you invest in a 529 plan, all withdrawals will be free from federal income taxes, as
long as the money is used for a qualifed college expense for your child, or even your grandchild. (However,
non-qualifed withdrawals may be subject to federal, state and penalty taxes.) Contribution limits are quite high
so, in all likelihood, youll be able to put as much as you want into a 529 plan; although you generally cant exceed
the annual gift tax exclusion, which is $13,000 per benefciary in 2012. Furthermore, if you participate in your own
states 529 plan, your contributions may be tax deductible on your state taxes.
* Coverdell EducationSavingsAccount Dependingonyour incomelevel, youcancontributeupto$2,000
annually to a Coverdell Education SavingsAccount (ESA) in 2012. Your Coverdell earnings and withdrawals will
be tax-free, provided you use the money for qualifed education expenses. (Any non-education withdrawals from
a Coverdell ESA may be subject to a 10 percent penalty.) Unlike a 529 Plan, in addition to college expenses,
Coverdell funds can be used for kindergarten through 12th grade expenses and you can place Coverdell ESA
contributions into virtually any investment you choose - stocks, bonds, certifcates of deposit, etc.
* Zero coupon bonds A zero coupon bond is priced at a discount to its principal or face value. You
receive the principal value when the bond matures. So, you could purchase a zero coupon bond that matures
in the year your child is ready to go to college. Although you wont receive regular interest payments throughout
the life of the zero coupon bond, youll still be liable for the taxes on this interest. So, before purchasing a zero
coupon bond, consult with your tax advisor.
These investments have proven popular among many parents and grandparents. However, youll need to
consult with your fnancial advisor to determine which college-savings vehicles are appropriate for your needs.
But dont wait too long because, before you know it, todays grade-schoolers will be packing for their college
dorms.

First off let me apologize for
missing the last two issues of The
Mercer County Chronicle. All I have
to say is....Dont get old!!! At least
in your mind. As I always say the
thing I hate the most about getting old
is losing my mind. I just simply forgot
to write the articles until it was too late
to publish. I promise to do better in
the future.
With that said, arent you glad the
two political conventions are over and
now comes the stand up debates? I
can hardly wait to see what each man
has to say for his party. I think the one
between the present Vice-President and
the republican party candidate will be
the most interesting one. That will be
on October 11th and the Presidential
debate will first air on October 3rd.
The second debate will be on October
16th and the last one will be aired
on October 22nd. All the sessions
will be at prime time. So write those
dates down on your calendar and lets
hope they will help all you folks out
there to make the right choice come
November.
I have not checked the wooly
worms in the area so I cant say much
about the up coming winter. Lets hope
it is a mild one much like last year.
That may not meet the farmers needs
as far as moisture from the snow come
planting time in the Spring, but it sure
is nice not to have to dig out from
some of those Mercer County winters.

I Am DOING mY pART
I recently attended my 45th
high school class reunion. The
talk was of recent or planned
retirements in addition to kids,
grandkids, and vacations. The
Bride was, as always, very
reluctant to attend the party.
She was not my high school
sweetheart and, although
knowing some of my classmates
and their mates, most would be
strangers. I had to make multiple
reassurances that I would never
leave her side during the evening.
I was true to my word and kept
her at my side for the first fifteen
minutes and then there was the
call for the class picture. I left
with a promise to return promptly,
which I of course ignored as I
repeatedly met old friends that I
could not rudely leave. I finally
freed myself and found The Bride
smiling, holding a glass of wine,
and chatting with some new
and old acquaintances. Some
aspects of our relationship
appear to continually remain a
mystery to me. The Bride has
a lifelong insecurity in most
social situations. She feels she is
not smart enough, dressed well
enough, or her house is not clean
enough for the standards of some
judgmental person, who is not
on the guest list, but just may
show up and spread the word of
her shortcomings. In actuality
The Bride is one of the most
socially gifted people I know.
She is not only great with people,
but sincerely loves all living
creatures she meets and cares for.
Cats, dogs, birds, bees, praying
mantises, and even her husband,
they all find her home a safe
haven with an ongoing buffet.
If one would survey our friends
and acquaintances, they would
undoubtedly say she is the nicer
and much more pleasant member
of the Bruns couple. I did receive
an interesting question from a
classmate at the reunion during
the period of separation from my
Bride, Is your wife retired? I
hesitated in response because
the concept of retirement and the
Bride had never shared my brain
at the same time. She was an
English teacher before we met and
married. We had our two kids and
since I coached and taught many
long days, it was assumed she

6 cups water
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 cup medium barley
1 large carrot, diced
2 large ribs of celery
with the leaves, diced
1 medium onion, diced
1 and on half tablespoon
parsley
2 teaspoon salt
Fourth teaspoon
pepper
1 can (16 oz.) tomatoes,
chopped
Brown the ground beef
and drain off the grease.
Place all ingredients in
slow cooker for 6 hours
on low or high for 3 hours
or till barley is cooked. If
too thick add more water

When the kids entered junior
high school, she went to work to
pay for the future college bills.
She is presently cutting back on
her stained class artistry, and left
her office position shortly after
the kids graduated from college.
I am suddenly concerned how
The Bride might function in
total retirement. Being solely
responsible for managing and
entertaining ones own time is
not initially easy; this from a
person who has almost a double
digit retirement experience. I
intend to double my efforts to
lose all tools, documents, keys,
reading material, and hand
written notes. Searching for these
items will provide meaningful
exercise if she is considering
retirement. I will continue to
start and stop projects that will
leave her house dirty. These
situations seem particularly
effective in stimulating her
interest in my work. I will do
my best to continue to ask for
her assistance in all my projects
and therefore she will not be at
loose ends. My Bride deserves
the best in her golden years and
I intend to make any transition a
gradual and loving process.
