My Government Stands
There will be no caretaker Government to lead the country to the elections, says the Prime Minister. Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama revealed this to the media while reacting to a call made by the Fiji Labour Party in their preliminary submission to the Constitution Committee at the Suva Civic Centre. In presenting the party preliminary submission, FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry said the only legitimate way forward was clearly spelt out on the Fiji Court of Appeal (FCA) judgment. However, the Prime Minister reminded the FLP leader that they should only make submissions about the constitution and not the way the country is governed. My Government will not listen to anyone who wants to tell us how to govern the nation, Commodore Bainimarama said. The Government had nothing to do with the FCA ruling and must not be brought up. The Prime Minister said FLP should not mention anything about the 1997 Constitution because it had been abrogated. In his submission Mr Chaudhry said: The FCA judgment advised that a caretaker Prime Minister be appointed with the specific mandate to oversee the process of holding general elections and restoring constitutional rule within a realistic time frame, Mr Chaudhry Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has repeatedly said his Government said in his submission. has every intention to take the country to truly democratic elections in 2014 He adds paragraph 156 of the judgment Continued on Page 3

My Government Stands
Continued From Page 1 reads: The only appropriate course at the present time is for elections to be held that enable Fiji to get a fresh start. Taking cognizance of the principle of necessity for the purposes of these proceedings, it is advisable for the President to appoint a distinguished person independent of the parties in litigation as caretaker prime minister to advice dissolution of Parliament and direct the issuance of writs for an election under S60 of the Fiji Constitution. This is to enable Fiji to be restored to constitutional rule in accordance with the Constitution. Mr Chaudhry said they firmly believed that the President has the powers (Executive Authority Decree 2 of 2009) to take the following course of action appropriate to establishing a credible and legitimate process of returning Fiji to constitutional rule. The PM said FLP should, during its proper submission, make proposals that would help the nation move forward rather than submitting old ideas for the partys advantage only. The 1997 Constitution has been abrogated and thats it. Mr Chaudhry also raised concerns about the constitutional process saying it was flawed. The process as sanctioned by Decrees 57 and 58 is fundamentally flawed it is driven by the regime to achieve its own agenda. It lacks credibility, integrity and legitimacy, Mr Chaudhry said. He said there should be no immunity and the inclusion of immunity would promote coups in the country.

Two lawyers have been found guilty of professional misconduct by the Independent Legal Services Commission. Commissioner Justice Paul Madigan in the judgment said the two counts of unsatisfactory professional conduct and one count of professional misconduct against Kini Marawai was established. He also said one count of professional misconduct and another count of unsatisfactory conduct against Rajend Chaudhry was established. The commission said on January 26, 2011, Indian national Muskan Balaggan was arrested at Nadi International Airport when she was enroute to Melbourne. She was charged with a drug trafficking offence. Mr Chaudhry appeared in midSeptember, in the Suva Magistrates Court, asking the court to ask the

accused if she consented to his appearance in order to advance mitigation. She consented. On September 29, Mr Chaudhry appeared and applied to the court to have the guilty plea vacated a new plea entered. The magistrate refused, adding that she was of the view that coercion was a point of mitigation and not to be advanced as a defence to the charge. Balaggan was sentenced on the same day. On October 12, Mr Chaudhry filed an appeal against conviction and sentence. On March 16, this year, Justice Goundar was of the view that Mr Chaudhry was acting in conflict of interest and referred the matter to the Chief Registrar for an independent inquiry as to the professional conduct of Mr Chaudhry and Mr Marawai.

Australia Donates A New Boat

The Australian government has given a new boat to the Ministry of Health to help boost medical services for the people of Yasawa. Health Ministry spokesperson Peni Namotu says the boat will be used to transport patients from the different villages to the main health centre. Namotu says it will also lift the standard of service for medical officers as transport is one of the major problems of the maritime zones. Basically medical evacuation is one of the problems that we face in the island and boat is the only means of transport that is usually provided to get the people to the mainland or health facility. The boat will cater for about 3,000 people in the Yasawas .

All iTaukei youths in villages who are under the age of 21 should be banned from smoking and yaqona drinking. This submission was made by Nayawa villager Peniasi Vakili at Talenavuruvuru bure in Sigatoka. He also submitted for an iTaukei Land Trust Board office to be set up in Sigatoka to help the people of Nadroga/ Navosa Province. "Traveling and time factor is a huge obstacle to landowners wishing to visit the TLTB offices in This comes as garment companies are taking their businesses to places like Cambodia and Vietnam where the wages are much lower than in Fiji. This was revealed by Labour Minister Jone Usamate. Usamate says at one time there were 18,000 garment workers in the country. Now there are just 4,000 workers. Usamate says wages for garment workers in Fiji are much higher compared to the cheap labor the companies get in other countries. He says this is normal in the business world where the bottom line is the profit matters most. Garment factories that chose to remain in Fiji should engage in something different that will earn them the much needed profit. An example he says is making clothes for a higher class market like Australia and the United States.

Villager Wants Yaqona And Smoking Ban For Youths

Nadi and Lautoka," he said. "Also, all institutions that are set up under the iTaukei Affairs Act are to be consolidated and not to be done away with. We want the enforcement of the iTaukei institutions in village setting such as the village council, district and the provincial," Mr Vakili said. "We also propose that the Great Council of Chiefs to be reinstated as this is the sign of unity among the iTaukei.

9 Police Officers Sent Home

Nine police officers have been sent home pending an internal investigation into alleged corrupt dealings with various members of the public, according to a government statement. Details of the allegations were not disclosed, but Fiji Police reminds all its officers that no one is above the law and that any officer found to be engaging in corrupt or illegal dealings would be punished in accordance with the laws of this country. Drivers Told - Let Passengers Sit First
Newly crowned Miss India Fiji, Sheryl Kumar is keen to promote Fiji further on the world stage. The 20-year-old University of the South Pacific second year student who is a strong advocate of youth empowerment believes her country can be promoted in many ways. "Now that I have been chosen as Miss India Fiji, my responsibility is to be a good ambassador of my country and promote it further globally," she said after the crowning in Suva. "Fiji is more than just a holiday destination and as the country's representative to the Miss India Worldwide pageant; I will promote my country's culture and other unique features." "Though Fiji appears to be a dot on the world map to some, my country has so much to offer and I will try to raise as much awareness possible in Malaysia." "It is an honor to be selected as Miss Fiji and I will try to perform to the best of my ability and make my country and family proud," she quipped. Kumar who comes from a family of two said her 17-year-old brother; Nigel has been her strength of support together with her parents. "My parents and my little brother have always been on my side and I want to thank them for their support and guidance." "I would also like to thank my sponsor Natasha Jan and the two wonderful ladies; Nazia and Aliyah who organized this wonderful event which gave all the contestants the confidence to come out in public and showcase their talents." With USP currently on mid-semester break, Kumar plans to spend more with her family and friends. She will represent Fiji in the 22nd Miss India Worldwide pageant in Kuala Lumpur in March, 2013. Bus drivers had been warned to allow passengers to be seated before driving off from a stop. Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesperson Alfred Williame said bus drivers should make sure that passengers were safe during the course of their travel in a bus. It is a common practice that bus drivers do drive away before passengers find a seat, Mr Williame said. This is wrong. They should ensure that the passengers are seated before they drive off. We will be on the lookout for that and impose actions on drivers practicing this. It is a common practice by drivers that as soon as they collect fares from passengers boarding the bus, no matter children or elderly, drivers pull away from the bus bay leaving passengers to stagger along the aisle looking for seats. The safety of passengers should be the drivers priority at all times. They do not only drive, but make sure that passengers arrive at their destinations safely. Drivers attitudes should change. They have their code of conduct to follow. It is disappointing that they are not following their code of conducts and the message should be driven across to them that if they fail to follow procedures then LTA will impose actions, he said. people of Fiji as they have been very helpful in directing us to places and providing services. She said the beautiful handicraft and Fijian art were admired by their fellow traveling mates. We also took a look around the market and I believe we have had fresh local fruits from there. Ms Gipson also took a taxi to visit the Rain Tree Lodge in Colo-i-Suva. Meanwhile, tourists also had health checks at the Superdrug Pharmacy. This showed that Fiji is the way the world should be. I am just overwhelmed with the support and well-wishes and I am honoured to be an ambassador of Fiji. The President of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, the Prime Minister Voreqe Banimarama, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum accompanied by their wives, government officials as well as overseas ambassadors to Fiji were on hand to celebrate the day with students and thousands of fans. We (Fiji) were isolated, we forged new friendships and now we are getting back on track again, Nailatikau added. Bainimarama echoed the same sentiments. Constitution Process Flawed: FLP

Fijis Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry says the constitution process is fundamentally flawed and lacked credibility, integrity and legitimacy as sanctioned by Decrees 57 & 58. He made the comments while presenting the partys preliminary submission to the constitution commission at Civic Centre in Suva. Chaudhry said, The constitution commission is driven by the regime to achieve its own self-serving agenda as is evident from the various repugnant provisions in the two decrees promulgated on July 18, 2012. He said that it is manifestly clear that the process is not going to be inclusive, participatory or even credible because it has been unilaterally imposed on the people of Fiji without any consultation with their legitimate representative. Chaudhry added that it was a stand FLP has maintained from the very beginning that the process back to democracy and constitutional rule should not be driven by the regime. We now submit that there is only one legitimate and credible way back to constitutional rule and that is to abide by the advice rendered in the decision of the Fiji Court of Appeal (FCA) on April 9 2009- Qarase vs Banimarama Civil Appeal, Chaudhry said. According to Chaudhry, the FCA judgment advised that a caretaker Prime Minister be appointed with the specific mandate to oversee the process of holding general elections and restoring constitutional rule within a realistic time frame. We implore members of the Commission to carefully consider transitional arrangement to democratic rule and make adequate provision in the draft constitution for the same, including the appointment of a caretaker government to take charge of the process of returning Fiji to constitutionals rule via free, fair and credible elections. We also feel strongly that the members of the Commission must not regard themselves bound by those unethical provisions of Decrees 57 and 58 which they consider inhibit the proper discharge of their duties and responsibilities in accordance with their oath of office. The Labour Party plans to give in their full submissions early October. When contacted on FLP's submission, commission chairman, Professor Yash Ghai said, "FLP members are like any citizens of Fiji and they have the right to raise issues that affect them".

Welders Death Being Investigated

Two employees of S Nairs Transport have been taken in for questioning by Fiji police in relation to the death of a 37-year-old welder who died after being crushed by a bus at the companys depot in Nasinu. The two, a 24-year-old mechanic and a 17-year-old, are alleged to have turned on the ignition of the bus that crushed the deceased who was doing repair works underneath. Fiji Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said the 24-year-old mechanic had instructed a 17-year-old to turn on the steering as he wanted to tighten the dragging arm. Upon turning on the steering wheel, the bus suddenly jerked forward and the rear tire went over the deceased. The deceased was rushed to the CWM Hospital in Suva by his colleagues where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The South Pacific Tourism Organisation will be looking at the e-marketing of Pacific ACP countries, starting off with Fiji, Tonga and Kiribati before moving to other countries. Chief executive Ilisoni Vuidreketi said under the funding received from the 10th European Development Fund, the SPTO would be providing advice and assistance to national tourism organisations on improving their websites. This also includes the training e-marketing applications as well as the use of social networking sites, database marketing and search engine optimisation. Mr Vuidreketi said SPTO members and national tourism organisation had different needs acknowledging that each activity undertaken by the SPTO would not have the same impact across the board.

Tourism Body Considers E-Marketing

"For example, there will be activities that will benefit the smaller island nations more than it will the bigger countries, such as the Cruise Manual and then other activities that will have more impact on the bigger countries such as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)," he said. "To ensure that every country benefits from the overall work plan, we undertake a number of measures which includes conducting regular surveys, communicating with the beneficiaries on a regular basis and distributing extensive reports on each activity outlining the beneficiary countries. We also conduct regular workshops and board meetings where the latest EDF10 work is presented and members are given the opportunity to discuss any concerns or requests they may have.

High Global Market Potential

IF there is one thing that tourists do look forward to when visiting Fiji, it is to have a taste of Fiji Bitter. From the posh surroundings of hotel bars, nightclubs to cassava patches, Fijians have practised the art of taki with the beer, that has become one of the iconic brands of Fiji. But with Coca-Colas multimillion dollar takeover of the Fiji Bitter makers, the Fosters Group Pacific last week, several announcements were made. There was the promise of a $27million to upgrade and expand facilities to lift the quality and capability for the production of premium export quality beer and spirits. We are delighted to acquire these businesses and the fantastic brands of Fiji Bitter and Bounty Rum, which are Fijian icons. With the scale and expertise we are able to bring to the business, we strongly believe they have enormous potential to be developed into highquality export brands with a potential global market, Terry Davis, CCAs Group Managing Director said. We are not new to Fiji we have operated a successful non-alcoholic beverages business in Fiji since 1993, and fully understand the great potential of Brand Fiji. Fiji Bitter beer and Bounty Rum will complement our non-alcoholic portfolio, not just in Fiji, but in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific, and further afield. Mr Davis said CCAs investment would also provide a great platform for the Fijian brewery and distillery employees to grow their skills and that. There is also the promise for the Fijian customers and consumers, the upgrade would mean products are fresher and of higher quality. CCA said its acquisition of the Fiji brewery and distillery would complement its alcohol strategy in the Pacific, where the company now has multi-year distribution agreements with international beer brands Group Modelo, Carlsberg and Molson Coors in the Pacific Islands and New Zealand. Our alcohol strategy, which includes our 10 year agreement with Beam Inc, one of the worlds most successful and innovative premium spirits companies, is coming together well, and we are also looking forward to developing the spirit and ARTD (alcoholic ready-todrink) brands in Fiji while waiting for the beer restraint in Australia to expire in about 15 months time, Mr Davis said. CCA has operated a non-alcoholic beverages business in Fiji since 1993 with a bottling facility in Suva. CCA employs around 1000 people in Fiji. CCA entered into an agreement to lend $46 million last month to the Australian Beer Company, part of the Casella group, to be used to assist with the acquisition and expansion of a new brewery in Griffith, NSW. The loan will convert into a joint venture equity interest in the Australian Beer Company after the expiration of a restraint CCA is under until 16 December 2013 not to sell, distribute or manufacture beer in Australia. This is when the Fiji products would perhaps hit the Australian shelves.

The Fiji Development Banks failure to reach its target of lending 60 per cent of its funds to focused sectors and 40 per cent to the non-focused sectors has been attributed to a number of factors. The banks annual report for the 2011 year stated that one of the reasons was that the loan disbursement target was not matched. In addition, the sale of the banks home loan portfolio did not happen. The mid-stream settlement of a few of the banks performing clients was also given as a reason. The bank released its report this week, revealing it made a $2.5m profit. The FDB had aimed achieve its 60:40 focused to non focused sector lending portfolio by June 2012 through the sale of the home loan portfolio, increasing loans to the focused sector and reducing loans to the non-focused sector. At the end of the 2011 financial year, of the $349.8m worth portfolio, 60.89 per cent was to the non-focused sector and 39.11per cent to the focused sector. The focused sectors include agriculture, manufacturing, wholesale, retail and hotels and mining and quarrying. The non-focused sectors include building

and construction, individuals and real estate. Explaining the strategy to achieve the business plan, the FDB said one was to acquire the four largest agro processors as well as import substitution and export oriented manufacturing businesses and expand the focused sector. The FDB said it had acquired three of the largest agroprocessors so far. Work also progressed on feasibility studies for the creation, expansion, reinstatement of large scale commercial farms for import substitution commodities such as cattle, dairy, sheep and rice farming to name a few possible ventures. In comparison to commercial institutions, challenges faced by development banks are always greater because of the inherent risks that accompany the sectors invested in. In addition to environmental, climatic, social and economic conditions, doing business at the grassroots level must also be conducted with respect to the prevailing cultural or traditional norms that exist in the community, the bank said.

Prestigious Award For Resort GM

Bob Speed lives up to his name. The WorldMark Resort Denarau Island general manager has beat those in his field winning the South Pacific general manager at the 2012 HM Awards for Hotel and Accommodation Excellence. Held in Sydney, Australia last Saturday, the HM Awards are the leading awards for the accommodation industry in the Asia Pacific region with a record number of more than 2000 entries received and only 41 finalists chosen this year. "I feel honored to receive the highly commended award for the South Pacific General Manager category and I feel very privileged to be working and living in Fiji," Mr Speed said. "I am proud to be working with a great team here who are service orientated and appreciate their role in Fiji's tourism industry which is reflected in the hospitality that is extended to our guests." He was nominated for the award for being a hands-on resort manager who is constantly inspired to find new ways to deliver business goals and ensure an exceptional holiday experience for all guests. He is overseeing a major redevelopment of the resort and was commended for his management of the resort during the Fiji floods earlier in the year ensuring the safety of guests and staff. WorldMark Resort Denarau Island is undergoing an extensive redevelopment which will include the construction of 63 new spacious and luxurious styles of accommodations ranging from one and two-bedroom deluxe apartments through to presidential villas with private plunge pools overlooking the ocean. Refurbishments are also being carried out on the resort's facilities including the pool area, restaurant, car park, reception and lobby area.

Unemployed Graduates
As Fiji's job crisis continues to deepen, 9523 graduates from various tertiary institutions in the country are still unemployed, it has been revealed. Minister for Labour Jone Usamate said out of those 9523 jobless graduates, 858 were degree holders. Mr Usamate said the unemployed graduates had been registered by the ministry's National Employment Centre (NEC) from April 2010. He said the large number of unemployed graduates in the country was a result of not enough jobs but there was still hope ahead. "For the past few years, our economic growth has been slow and job creation has been slow," Mr Usamate said. "There are not enough new jobs being created to absorb the new graduates," Mr Usamate told this newspaper. He said the other possible reason was because of the difference between what was being taught in tertiary institutions and what employers needed. Mr Usamate said Fiji needed to grow the job market and encourage the development of small micro enterprises (SMEs) to make use of the large number of well-educated unemployed youths the country had. "This year, we are beginning to see some positive signs in our economy. There have been good reports of demand in the construction sector. Growth in the construction sector is a sign of potential growth," he said. Mr Usamate outlined that tourism industry that was also doing well and the Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau had reported the number of investors interested to invest in Fiji. "On top of this, a 2.7 per cent economic growth has been forecast," he said. Mr Usamate also highlighted that various proactive measures had been developed by the ministry to counter the increase in unemployment rates. He said the ministry had selfemployment service for those who wanted to start their own small business, Fiji Volunteer Service for those who had a strong sense of service and civic pride and willingness to serve others before self. "Foreign Employment Service is another initiative for those who want to work overseas. This service will be launched with the Foreign Employment Unit under the ministry by the end of September," Mr Usamate said. He said the ministry had been engaging in vetting employment agencies that could take the role of seeking jobs in other countries for unemployed Fijians. Mr Usamate said the NEC could not create jobs but had been effective in carrying out its mandate.

Sugar City Promoted

The plan to promote Lautoka City as an ideal tourist destination like that of its neighbour Nadi gathered momentum with the start of the Arise Trade Fair 2012 on Monday. Hosted by the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industries, the week-long trade fair was opened by the Indonesian Ambassador to Fiji, Chandra Salim. Mr Salim said the trade fair was a great way to promote Fiji made brands. "The Fijian made brand will enable visitors and all buyers to differentiate Fijian handcrafts from other handicrafts. There is also a guarantee of quality and value for money," he said. "The Fijian made by Fijian campaign is not only for promoting locally manufactured or grown products but also to create awareness among the Fijian public regarding the importance of buying local." LCCI president Pyara Singh said Lautoka had the potential to be the best tourism destination in the South Pacific because of its unique position and port infrastructure. "The chamber and the Lautoka City Council are working hand in hand to achieve this tremendous task to ascertain this reality," said Mr Singh. He also highlighted some of the chamber's strategic plans over the next two years which included creating a vibrant business community and establishing new businesses in the Sugar City.

The Suva High Court deferred trial date for former Post Fiji executives Peni Mau and Dhirendra Pratap. High Court Judge Justice Prabaharan Kumararatnam said the deferment is due to relevant issues to be submitted by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). The case has been adjourned to October 3, 2012 for mention and confirmation of the new trial date. The court heard that the FICAC has not submitted relevant disclosed documents to the defence lawyers and the court.

Court Adjourns Mau, Pratap Trial Date

FICACs lawyer Rashmi Aslam also asked for some time to prepare for his submission. Maus lawyer Barbara Malimali told the court that along with Prataps lawyer Mehboo Raza she has been waiting for the requested 2006 audit report from FICAC for a month now. She asked if the trial could start when they receive the report from FICAC. She had also requested for personal financial transaction records of those Post Fiji employees who were recently added on as witnesses.

Indias renowned Qawwal Wajahat Hussain Khan Badayuni group arrives in Fiji on September 20. This was confirmed by the Indian Cultural Centre, High Commission of India director Dr Kamal Kishor Mishra. Dr Mishra said the group is going to perform eight shows around the country and will be reaching out to the rural communities. The group had recently performed at the Royal Festival Hall in London under Sufi Music from Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh in Jahan E Khusrau Festival, he said. Qawwali is a form of Sufi devotional music. The group consists of Wajahat Hussain Khan who is from Badayun in Uttar Pradesh, and his qawwals follow the Awadhi style of singing. The bands instruments were two harmoniums, dholak and tabla. Wajahat Husain Khansahab is the grand nephew of the famous Qawwali maestro Jafar Hussain Khan Badauni. Wajahat is from the Rampur Sehaswan Gharana and is the grandson and disciple of legendary Ustad Nissar Hussain Khansahab. Born in Badaun, Wajahat was associated with Jaffar sahab at an early age due

to his keen interest in Sufi music and started performing regularly ever since. An experienced qawwal now 45, Wajahat is recognised by most in the qawwali and classical fraternity for his musical prowess and understanding of gayaki. His wonderfully melodious style is quite similar to his granduncle the great Jafar Hussain Khansaheb. Dr Mishra said the group is going to perform at the Vunimono Community Hall, Nausori on September 21 before they travel to Vanua Levu through the courtesy of Patterson Shipping. In Vanua Levu, the group will perform in Seaqaqa on September 23 and next day at Subrail Park in Labasa. The group will perform at the Suva Civic Centre on September 26, at Crows Nest in Korotogo, Sigatoka the next day. Their final appearance will be at Lautoka on September 28 followed by the Nadi and Ba shows. Dr Mishra said their aim is to take such top quality groups to the rural communities who are often neglected. All these shows are free of charge and its part of the ICC celebration of 40 years in Fiji, he said.

The court heard that a security guard did not report a burglary to police because he knew the accused and felt sorry for him. Jeremaia Cakacaka took the witness stand against Rusiate Savu at the Suva Magistrates Court. During cross examination, in response to Mr Savu's question, Mr Cakacaka said the police took his statement the day after the burglary. Mr Savu asked him why as the security guard that night; he did not report the matter to police. The witness said he once lived that life but had changed. He also said that he felt sorry for the accused. Mr Savu is charged for stealing assorted items worth $7000 from Ezybuy between March 31 and April 2 this year. Earlier, Director of Public Prosecutions lawyer Josaia Niudamu asked Mr Cakacaka how long he worked as a security guard at the old Kadavu House

building. Mr Cakacaka responded saying for 9 to 10 years. He said he was sleeping on March 31; he closed the gate to the betting shop, patrolled the building then went to sleep on the third level. Mr Cakacaka said he woke up in the early hours of the morning to see two men there. He said he did not know where they came from or what they were doing. After enquiring with the men, Mr Cakacaka said they told him that they were not doing anything nor did they steal. He said he told them to leave and opened the gate, allowing them out of the building. Mr Cakacaka said the accused and his accomplice were holding a bag each when they spoke. Mr Niudamu asked Mr Cakacaka if he knew Mr Savu. He said he did not know Mr Savu's real name, he said he knew the accused by the name Toa and that he knew him from the streets.

Sisters Help School In Dad's Memory

Two sisters Veena Tilly and Munjula Watts have a special feeling for their birthplace despite residing more than 1000 miles away in their adopted home in Australia. For the past few years, the sisters have been instrumental in initiating and implementing developments at Drasa Secondary School on the outskirts of Lautoka City. They assisted in the construction of the learning centers new woodwork room, computer room, multimedia room and the school library. Project co-coordinator Mrs Tilly said they not only participated in the contribution of money and school equipment but also on the ground doing the required work. She said the idea to help the school started in 2005 after working with the Rotary Fiji schools team at Koroipita Village. "We supplied 400 books and 40 computers for the newly-built multimedia room at the school," said Mrs Tilly. "As a teacher, I want to support students who come from a village to the local school and we have also provided furniture in other schools as well. "Since this school wanted to develop vocational catering we were lucky to have the assistance of my sister who has a restaurant in Adelaide. "The new project is to include a dining room, proper bar, restaurant and storeroom and students will be also taught various lessons in commercial catering." Mrs Watts said she wanted to join her sister in assisting the students of Drasa. "I have only come to Drasa for the last two years to help my sister with the projects," she said. "It's important to do this project for us as a family because we are from here and we were born on Luvu road in Drasa and our late father was an important member of the community here. "These projects are made in memory of him and our emphasis is helping the students of Drasa." School principal Parnesh Naidu said the establishment of a new catering and hospitality training facility at the school would allow students to develop industry standard skills to enable immediate transition into the workforce. "This will in turn support the economy with skilled persons that can fill positions in the hospitality industry in Fiji," he said. "This is a very innovative project; we have had the catering school here since 2005 when the Ministry of Education provided us with the equipment to start this program and gave us the approval for vocational catering. "We are very fortunate that Munjula and her husband Andrew together with Mrs Tilly Andrew have stepped in to this worthy project." He said this year the team consisted of Rotarians and volunteers from Tasmania, Northern NSW, Victoria and Fiji.

Aid Here Soon

Educators from Georgia will arrive in the country soon to help boost the Governments efforts on education for all. They will deliver 1000 more note books (compact portable computers) for use by rural Fijian schoolchildren. Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, who has just finished an official visit to Georgia, confirmed: A delegation from the Ministry of Education, Georgia, will bring shortly to Fiji 1000 note books for rural schools. It follows 400 note books the Georgians gave Fiji earlier this year. Ratu Inoke had a series of high level meetings in Georgia, including with President Mikheil Saakashvili and Prime Minister, Vano Merabishvili. President Saakashvili invited Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama to visit Georgia. Ratu Inoke said Mr Merabishvili confirmed that their relationship and co-operation with Fiji would continue and could be further enhanced. Georgia is an economically fast growing nation of 4.7 million people in Eastern Europe. Its economic growth follows a major reform programme it undertook as it moved away from the Soviet era. Ratu Inoke said Georgias help would come in various forms. Georgia offers to Fiji three medical scholarships and three scholarships for any other field of study, he said. Possible areas of co-operation could include police infrastructure, public service and other areas of mutual interest. Ratu Inoke said: Early this year 400 note books were delivered to schools in Fiji. The Georgian Prime Minister said his country sought to further expand multifaceted co-operation with Fiji for the mutual benefit of the two nations.

Peter Cole Suspends Help To Fiji

The founder of Spirit of Sharing, Peter Cole, says he has suspended his help to Fiji for a few years. Spirit of Sharing is taking a break from supplying equipment to Fiji for a few years as our vision is to help other developing countries like Cambodia, Kiribati, Indonesia, Mr Cole said from Melbourne, Australia. It has been a remarkable experience donating so much to the people of Fiji over the past 12 years and we all at Spirit of Sharing truly hope we have enhanced the lives of many especially the children at school who play sport. More than 12 containers, a dormitory, water tanks, medical supplies and equipment and so much more. Two weeks ago, Mr Cole brought over a 40-foot container load of educational, health and sporting equipment and sportswear. He cut short his Fiji distribution last week to return home. It all started as usual having problems getting the container cleared by Customs. This time it was seven days to be precise before we had the sports and educational equipment cleared. It was a different story for the medical equipment taking longer. After all the efforts and generosity of so many people across Australia the equipment was finally cleared and ready to be delivered. It started with schools from Suva to Rakiraki and around to Natovi followed by schools thorough Tailevu, Nausori, Wainibokasi through the Suva-Nausori corridor. We also donated six computers to the St John Bosco Primary School in Nepani. He said the Ministry of Youth and Sports still has sporting equipment available for schools in need. Schools can contact the Ministry of Youth and Sports and speak to Joe Baleinakasi on 9201789 or send a letter to the ministry requesting assistance. Lots of sporting equipment donated has gone to Rotuma to assist them. I thank the Ministry of Youth and Sport for all their assistance this year with the distribution. Over $1 million worth of medical equipment was earmarked for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) in Suva and Wainibokasi Hospital outside Nausori. This is a massive donation and has been organised and sought through Wayne McKenzie, president of the Rotary Club of Belgrave in Victoria, Australia. The Rotary Club of Knox in Victoria, Australia, has supported Spirit of Sharing for the past five years through money and in kind. Spirit of Sharing, a charity organisation based in Melbourne, is a non-governmental and non-religious organisation that has donated more than $5m worth of aid to Fiji.

Bank's Liquidity Increases

The liquidity within our banking system was $581.8million on September 6, the Reserve Bank of Fiji said in its August review. It was $527.5m at the end of August. The central bank revealed that the annual growth in Net Domestic Credit remained on an upward trend despite a slowdown in July, down from 5.9 per cent in June to 4.7 per cent. "This is largely driven by lending to the private sector, which also rose on a yearly basis by 4.7 per cent in July. "During the same month, the banks' weighted average outstanding lending rate declined by 1 basis point (bp) to 6.98 per cent, while the time deposit rate fell by 5 bps to 2.51 per cent," the RBF said. Consumer prices rose by 4 per cent in July from a year earlier lower than the inflation rates noted in previous months. The decline in inflation from the start of the year, the RBF said, had been driven by lower commodity prices and the current benign domestic driven inflationary pressures. As a result, the year end inflation forecast remains unchanged at 3.5 per cent. On the external front, latest provisional accrual trade data revealed that the trade deficit widened annually by 5.7 per cent in the year to November last year, on account of rising retained imports (+2.6per cent) and declining domestic exports (-3.0 per cent). Foreign reserves were around $1,515 million at the end of August, sufficient to cover around 4.8 months of retained imports of goods and non-factor services. "Forward looking indicators for employment suggest more recruitment in the coming months. "According to the RBF's job advertisement survey, the number of jobs advertised rose by 6.7 per cent during the first seven months over the same period last year, an improvement compared to annual declines noted in the early part of this year," the central bank said.

The Word Fijian For All

Pacific Dialogue Limited (PDL) submitted their support for the adoption of Fijian as the national name for all Fiji citizens, adding that it was important that all ethnic groups in the country were united under a common name. Chief executive officer Jone Dakuvula, presenting to the Constitution Commission, said iTaukei would have to be persuaded it was in their best interest. Even though there is only minority support amongst iTaukei for Fijian to be an all-embracing national name, we strongly believe that this is the right time for it to be adopted as the national name for all citizens of Fiji. We must break this log jam and persuade the majority of iTaukei to embrace, or open up to, Fijian as a national and inclusive name for all citizens, he said. He said this was in the interest of national identity, unity, and sake of future generations; however iTaukei should remain the name that reflects the identity of the indigenous Fijian. He also submitted that the constitutional status of the Bose Levu Vakaturaga be cancelled. Mr Dakuvula said instead a council of chiefs called the Bose Ni Veiliutaki Vakavanua should be established as an advisory council to the Minister of iTaukei affairs on matters of interest to the iTaukei. The new constitution should contain a statement of State policy commitment to direct the review of all iTaukei laws and the Rotuman and Banaba Acts. It should have the objective of modernizing and strengthening leadership participation in such council-based on culturally-appropriate mechanism of consultation, accountability and good governance principles for new leadership creation, addressing and resolving conflicts, meeting the needs of the news generations of iTaukei, and empowering the communities concerned to develop their resources to improve their standards of living and contribute to national development and welfare, Mr Dakuvula said.

Fijian President, His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau received a courtesy call from the President of Tokelau, His Excellency Kerisiano Kalolo at Government House. HE Kalolo is also Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Education, Minister for Economic Development, Natural Resources and Environment (including Agriculture & Fisheries). H.E. Kalolo personally thanked the President and the Government of Fiji for its support towards Tokelaus submission to the United Nations at the UNs Special Committee Meeting on Decolonization, held this past June. H.E Kalolo also added that Fijis Permanent Representative to the United

Tokelau President Visits Fijian President

Nations Ambassador Peter Thompson introduced the two draft resolutions which sought to update the UN Special Committee on Decolonization on the efforts towards self-determination by Tokelau and New Caledonia. He said the UN Special Committee adopted the resolutions by consensus. I also wish to thank the Fijian Government for its support towards Tokelauan students currently studying at the University of the South Pacific, the Fiji School of Medicine and the Fiji School of Nursing, HE Kalolo said. H.E Kalolo and His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau both agreed to strengthen relations between the two countries.

The Fiji Police Force in the past three days has recorded an increase in attempted suicide cases. And interestingly, most of the cases were recorded in Ba and Labasa. Fiji Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said the force received a number of attempted suicide cases involving those as young as 15 years of age whereby most of the cases are due to family or romantic disputes. "One case was recorded in Ra where a15- year- old attempted to end to her life because she was depressed over her relationship with her boyfriend," added Naisoro. Similar cases were recorded in Labasa and Ba but the quantity increased to two cases from each towns. Naisoro said that the recent increase in attempted suicide cases is a real concern for the Fiji Police and should be for everyone else also as it shows that people are resorting to drastic measures instead of seeking for help to solve their problems. Many of these cases could easily have been dealt with through dialogue and is something we all need to address, Naisoro said.

Fiji's Market Women To Get Safer Facilities

Australia's aid agency AusAid says a new women's centre that it has helped fund in Fiji will improve the safety of female market sellers. In the past, women who traveled long distances to sell goods at the market in Savusavu had to sleep in the open and were vulnerable to attack. A spokeswoman for AusAid in Fiji, Sarah Golding, told the media that the new women's centre nearby will provide a safe place to sleep, and various other benefits. "What's its going to do...is providing a place for women that are coming to Savusavu to sell goods for sale with an opportunity for a safe place to sleep," she said. "It will also provide them with a kitchen where they can cook and then sell food that they've made."

Fiji Needs A New Flag - Pacific Dialogue Ltd

Pacific Dialogue Limited in its submission to the Constitution Commission in Suva raised concerns over the national flag of Fiji. PDLs chief executive, Jone Dakuvula made submissions on behalf of the organisation and stated that Fiji needed a new flag because Fijis current noble banner blue is just a reminder of Fijis negative colonial inheritances such as racism, divide, rule and cringing subservience. Even though Fiji is now a republic with a president as head-of-state and therefore warrants a new flag, we submit that the new flag should be the symbol of a new beginning as a nation, Dakuvula said. Dakuvula added that a lot of the symbols in the current Fiji flag represent Fijis colonial history like the Union Jack and the plaque in the middle. He also stated that the 1997 Constitution embodied the inheritance of Britains rule in Fiji and the knowledge they had imparted to Fijians about the importance of the rule of law and later parliamentary democracy are of far greater and meaningful value to Fiji than any symbol. It is important because we, through our more recent history have failed to uphold that inheritance of constitutional democracy and the rule of law, Dakuvula said. He also added that the constitution commission should ensure that the Fijis history is conveyed and understood from the Fijian peoples perspective. Meanwhile, PDL also raised issues regarding Fijis national anthem and advised the commission that Fiji should take a leaf out of South Africas book by having three different verses in three different languages: one in Vosa Vaka Viti, one in Fijian Hindi and the third in English.

in the country, none provide any written document on the terms of the 'insurance', or the 'insurance policy'. Hence, not only the consumer but the HP salespersons are unaware of how the insurance works. Take a look at the case study below.

Insurance is one of the most problematic but yet the most profitable sector in the hire-purchase industry in Fiji. Many consumers who buy their products on credit are unaware that the product is actually insured let alone understanding how insurance works in the hire-purchase industry. The hire-purchase report reveals that 54 per cent of consumers did not even know that the product they purchased was insured. Of those who were aware that the product was insured, 41 per cent learnt of this only when they had agreed to purchase the product or when repayments started, or when the item was stolen or damaged. As much as 66 per cent of the consumers were not even asked by the seller to pay any insurance. Of the 34 per cent who were asked to pay insurance, 22 per cent were asked to take additional insurance on the product. 77 per cent of the consumers did not know how much insurance they paid for the product. Case Study

Mrs Levuka purchased some furniture from a HP dealer in 2008. A year later, she passed away. Not knowing what to do, Mrs Levuka's husband went to the HP dealer to inform that his wife had passed away and enquired what he was required to do with the furniture his late wife had purchased. The dealer informed him that he would have to continue with the payments. The consumer's husband advised the dealer that he did not sign any agreement with the company, and that he was ready to return the items instead of making further payments on them. The dealer insisted he continue with his late wife's payments without providing

him appropriate information under the law. The husband sought the assistance of the Consumer Council of Fiji. Upon consultation with the company, the council was advised that the Consumer Credit Act 1999 had a provision which required the next of kin to continue with payments in the event of passing away of an account holder. The payments have to continue until the account is paid off. The council did not agree with the advice given by the dealer and consulted the director of the company who informed that Mrs Levuka's husband would not need to continue with any payments since the items were covered by insurance. The director apologised for the misinformation the company's Finance Manager had provided and agreed to train all his staff on this matter.

MH's Homemaker levies an insurance charge separately from the credit charge on all goods sold under HP. It charges for the Queensland Insurance Company 3.5 per cent per annum of costs of general goods; 5 per cent per annum for computers, and 5.5 per cent per annum for generators, outboard engines, car stereos, air compressors, video cameras, and fastfones.

Man Drowns While Saving Son

A 44- year- old cane cutter of Karavi, Ba lost his life while trying to save his son who got trapped by at the flood gate during their family fishing trip. Fisherman Sukeshwar Bir was fishing at a river near his Karavi home around 8pm Monday when his son Nitesh lost his footing on the river bank and fell into the water. Birs wife Vimla said their son called out for help to Sukeshwar, who attempted to rescue him by getting into the fast flowing water. Vimla said she held out a stick for the men to hold onto, which Nitesh was able to grab. Unfortunately, he himself got swept by the current and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Ba Mission Hospital. Following the incident, the Fiji Police Force is once again appealing to members of the public to be aware of the hazards and dangers of their environment for their own safety.

the Singapore Mediation Centre, he has helped to train judges, lawyers and professionals on Mediation in Thailand, Malaysia, Fiji, Nigeria and Philippines. Josephine Hadikusumo is a graduate with Bachelor of Law and Master of law from Australia and has taught international trade law, commercial law, contracts & mediation in Malaysia and is an Associate Mediator and a trainer at the Singapore Mediation Centre. This training is part of the ministrys ongoing capacity building initiative, to further develop the professional competence in mediation skills of our officers to effectively resolve employment related problems. The seminar for Judges and magistrates is designed to provide hands on experience in the practice of mediation and appreciate how Alternate Dispute Resolution [ADR] and mediation could play a central role in civil jurisdiction. Since the inception of the Mediation Unit in 2008, there has been growth in the number of grievances reported with the corresponding increase in the settlement rate of such grievances, starting from 75 per cent in 2008 and now hovering around 80 per cent. These are attributed primarily to the quality and high level of training conducted by the Singapore Mediation Centre in contemporary techniques and transferring skills that has improved dialogue between disputants resulting in a greater settlement rate.

Fiji Ginger Under Attack

Not even a month since the announcement of Fiji being given the green light to export ginger into Australia, and Australian growers are already attacking this move. Australias National Party is pushing for a senate inquiry into the threat of disease posed by ginger imports from Fiji, the media reported. Australian growers are concerned about the risk of disease and Nationals Senator, Ron Boswell, said he will urge the Senate to examine the risks involved in allowing the import. Australian ginger growers had until Monday to respond to the Provisional Final Import Risk Analysis Report for Fresh Ginger from Fiji issued by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests. The report identified the yam scale (Aspidiellahartii) and burrowing nematode (Radopholussimilis) as quarantine pests of concern to Australia which needs to be managed. The report proposed a combination of management measures including that the ginger must be grown with infield management controls or undergo a postharvest treatment for burrowing nematode. It also proposed ginger mush undergo inspection and certification by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF), together with fumigation of consignments. Biosecurity Authority of Fiji chief executive, Elvis Silvestrini, has already assured their commitment to work with the Australian authorities to look into any areas of concern and in particular the pests identified. We will work closely with the Australian authorities to ensure all biosecurity conditions related to export of fresh ginger to Australia are met, Mr Silvestrini said. In addition to this, we are working with the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access, to develop a handbook and in-field training programmes that will assist farmers and exporters meet conditions set by the Australian authorities. Meanwhile, Australian Ginger Industry Association chairman, Anthony Rehbein, was reported by the media saying he is unhappy about quarantine measures outlined in Biosecurity Australias final risk analysis. We feel as the association, that those mitigation measures were extremely poor to fight against RadopholusSimilis, he said. Mr Rehbein said they have only been allowed to comment on the process but not Biosecurity Australias recommendations. We werent happy with the mitigation measures that were put in place. We really are seeking support from the Federal Government, he said. The industry said the pest could wipe out local crops and Senator Boswell said the industry has valid concerns. They believe that it is almost guaranteed that the pest or threat of burrowing nematode, which is quite a significant risk, will come into Australia, he said. Were getting hit everywhere, pineapples, potatoes, ginger is a small one, but a lot of people are very worried about the importation of disease. Senator Boswell said he was confident of getting support for an inquiry, which would allow growers to tender their own scientific evidence. If everything goes accordingly, Fiji would be the first country in the world that will export fresh ginger into Australia. Mr Silvestrini, said having Australian market access for ginger would bring substantial benefits for large number of farming communities and their families. Government through the Department of Agriculture has implemented a three-year plan to revitalize the ginger industry and increase production. Fiji also exports processed ginger (ginger preserved in sugar or brine, and powdered) to Australia.

Promoting Cultural Identity Through Literacy Awareness

The Ministry of Information, National Archives and Library Services of Fiji permanent secretary Sharon Smith Johns is encouraging the reading of vernacular literature to promote the knowledge of local culture and heritage. As the Ministry finalizes arrangements for the annual Library Week to be held from September 8th to 15th, Ms Smith Johns is urging parents around the country to encourage their children to always prioritize reading. Highlighting the importance of literacy levels in the country and governments commitment towards education, Ms Smith Johns said that the issue of literacy should be taken seriously by both parents and youths. We need to remind our youth that because reading forms an integral part of the learning process, we must always encourage reading not only in schools but also in our homes, Ms Smith Johns said. There are many benefits of reading but what we would like to particularly emphasize is that reading vernacular books not only expands your vocabulary but also provides you a sound knowledge of our culture and heritage. We have observed in recent times that the habit of reading is slowly dying away as more and more forms of entertainment distract our children from just picking up a book to read. In order to address the gap in literacy levels, the Ministry has strengthened its rural outreach program to ensure that libraries, even in the most remote parts of the country have access to library books. Thats why the department of library services spends much of its time in the rural or remote communities promoting literacy. This includes recent outreach programs in the Yasawas and Naitasiri, Mr Smith Johns said. National Library week is a national event whereby the Ministry seeks to engage all government ministries and municipalities to encourage reading at all level and especially for the children. The Library Services of Fiji has a week-long road show planned to commemorate the event with celebrations beginning from Nausori and moving to the West to Rakiraki, Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, Nadi and Sigatoka.

Two British Policewomen Sacked Vegas Recovering From Tuesdays For Racial Abuse Record Rainfall
Two women police officers in Britain have been sacked after a colleague recorded them having a conversation in which one said that black people looked like gorillas and monkeys, the media reported. Special Constable Rosanna Garofalo and Woman Police Constable Joanna Sugda were in the changing room at Islington police station in March when a colleague left an iPhone on record in her locker at work. When the recording was played, Garofalo was heard saying black people "all look the f*****g same. They all look like monkeys", the daily said. A disciplinary hearing heard how she said she could never have sex with a black man and that her boyfriend would not be interested in black women as they "look like gorillas". She also described another officer as that having "a face like a gorilla", and that she was "f*****g ugly". Sugda, 32, is believed to be heard laughing in the background, and exclaiming "you can't say that". Garofalo defended her actions, saying that the incident was taken out of context, the daily said. "I am not a racist and still do not believe the conversation we had to have any racist connotations," she was quoted as saying. Garofalo has launched a claim for unfair dismissal. Metropolitan Police said there have been 96 claims of racism by officers between April 1 and June 1 this year. A constable was fired in July after he told a Pakistani takeaway manager in King's Cross to "go back to your f*****g country" because he was refused a discount on food.

Taliban Threaten To Kidnap And Kill Prince Harry

The Afghan Taliban said on Monday they were doing everything in their power to try to kidnap or kill Britains Prince Harry, who arrived in Afghanistan last week to fly attack helicopters. Queen Elizabeths grandson is in Afghanistan on a four-month tour, based in Camp Bastion in the volatile Helmand province, where he will be on the front line in the NATO-led war against Taliban insurgents. We are using all our strength to get rid of him, either by killing or kidnapping, Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, told Reuters by phone from an undisclosed location. We have informed our commanders in Helmand to do whatever they can to eliminate him, Mujahid added, declining to go into detail on what he called the Harry operations. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he was not worried about the Taliban threat against Prince Harry. Thats not a matter of concern, Rasmussen told a news conference in Brussels on Monday. I mean, we do everything we can to protect all our troops deployed to Afghanistan whatever might be their personal background. Britains Ministry of Defence declined to comment on Mujahids statement. British authorities have given few details of Prince Harrys stint in Afghanistan for security reasons. The 27-year-old prince, who is third in line to the throne, took up his new role two weeks after being photographed frolicking naked in Las Vegas. Known in the military as Captain Wales, he first served in Afghanistan in 2008 as an on-the-ground air controller, but his tour was cut short when a news blackout designed to protect him while he was on the front line collapsed.

UK Muslim Clerics Willing To Marry Child Brides'

British Muslim clerics are willing to carry out marriages involving child brides as young as 12, an investigation has revealed. The clerics were approached by man posing as the father of a 12-year-old, who wanted to marry off his daughter. Another Imam Mohamed Kassamali, of Husaini Islamic Centre in Peterborough, told the investigator that he would marry a bride of 12. Id love the girl to go to her husbands house as soon as possible, the younger the better, he said. However, he later insisted he would only conduct the wedding if it was legal in Britain, and neither party was forced into it, the report said.

US Marks Low-Key September 11 8 Months Jail For Man Who Pointed Laser At Aircraft Landing At Mccarran Anniversary
A Las Vegas man was sentenced to eight months in jail for pointing a laser light last year at aircraft landing at McCarran International Airport. Michael Viera-Crespo, Jr., 28, was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court, according to Nevadas U.S. attorney, Daniel G. Bogden. U.S. District Judge Miranda Du sentenced Viera-Crespo, who pleaded guilty in March to attempted destruction of an aircraft. In addition to the jail time, Viera-Crespo also will serve three years of supervised release. Viera-Crespo has been in federal custody since March 27. Authorities say that on the evening of Aug. 31, 2011, Viero was standing outside an apartment complex near McCarran when he shined a strong green laser light into the cockpit of at least three commercial aircraft on their landing approach. After the airport reported the incidents, Metro Police flew a helicopter to the area, and a laser then beamed at the police helicopter. The helicopter crew contacted patrol units on the ground, which located Viera-Crespo parked at an apartment complex on Tamarus Street and shining the green laser light. Viera-Crespo was arrested at the scene. In his plea agreement, Viera-Crespo stated that he shined the laser light at the aircraft to interfere with the pilots and that he acted with reckless disregard for the safety of the persons on the aircraft. These powerful lasers have the potential to harm a pilots vision and affect their ability to safely operate an aircraft, Bogden said. We take these cases seriously because of the potential for harm and the risk posed by such criminal conduct to pilots, their passengers and the public. Laser pointing incidents involving aircraft have risen dramatically in the last several years, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The lasers can temporarily diminish eyesight or blind pilots in planes near the ground, according to FAA research. Some industrial lasers are capable of damaging the eye. Early this year, the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 was signed into law and prohibits aiming of a laser pointer at an aircraft or in its flight path.

Americans have marked the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in a sombre, but more low-key mood as memory of the event gradually fades. As every year, relatives of the nearly 3,000 people killed when hijacked airliners slammed into New York's World Trade Center gathered at Ground Zero to read the names of the dead. However, this year, no politicians were joining in with the reading and security was less intense, in contrast to the 10th anniversary last year when US president Obama headed a long list of VIPs at the ceremony. June Pollicino, who lost her husband on 9/11, said: "I feel much more relaxed. After the ninth anniversary, those next days it started building up to the 10th anniversary. This year it's different in that regard." "It's another anniversary we can celebrate in a discreet way," she said. The day's main event was the ritual reading of names - 2,983 in all, including the 9/11 victims and those killed in the precursor to those attacks, the 1993 car bombing of the World Trade Center. The reading paused for silence at the exact time each of the four planes hijacked by Al Qaeda turned into

fireballs - two smashing into the Twin Towers, one into the Pentagon and one into a Pennsylvania field. Another two moments of silence were to be observed at the times the two main towers of the World Trade Center collapsed, accounting for the vast majority of 9/11's dead. The ceremony took place on the grounds of the 9/11 Memorial between the two huge black fountains that mark the footprints of the old Twin Towers. Mr Obama and his wife Michelle were observing the anniversary with a moment of silence outside the White House, then a visit to the Pentagon memorial. Vice president Joe Biden, meanwhile, was traveling to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United flight 93 crashed after passengers attacked the hijackers and prevented them from hitting another presumed high-profile target, such as the US Capitol building. The White House said Mr Obama had been briefed by "key national security principals on ... preparedness and security posture" for the anniversary. Last week, Mr Obama said in a radio address that the United States is "stronger, safer and more respected in the world" since 9/11.

Man Swallowed Fake Gem To Let Real Thief Escape

A Chinese man accused of swallowing a diamond worth $13,000 at a gem show in Sri Lanka actually ingested a fake stone in an elaborate bluff to allow the real thief to escape, police say. Detectives discovered the ruse after waiting until the man, 32, passed the fake stone that he had swallowed at the Facets Sri Lanka annual jewellery exhibition in Colombo last week. "The man with the real stone vanished while all the attention was on the man who was seen swallowing a stone that turned out to be fake," police spokesman Ajith Rohana said. "Investigations are now underway to track down the accomplice and recover the stolen diamond. We think both of them were involved in a racket." Police said the man appeared to swallow a tiny 1.5-carat diamond, creating a distraction as the stall owner shouted to nearby police who arrested him. The accused man was taken to Colombo National Hospital where X-rays showed a stone lodged in his stomach before a dose of laxatives brought it out on Saturday. Police said the man had been constantly monitored by armed guards to ensure the stone was not lost. Suresh de Silva, director of the Belgrade International gem store, last week said the two Chinese men approached his stall and asked to examine some diamonds closely. De Silva then saw one man put something in his mouth. "When I shouted, one ran away and we managed to catch the man who swallowed the stone," de Silva said. Sri Lanka does not mine diamonds but it has a large gem and jewellery industry and is famed for its blue sapphires.

The word had spread by lunchtime, and the line was snaking through the ropes at the entry like a ride at Disneyland, with people waiting about 25 minutes to be the first to try the 500 items in nine themed kitchens, from Asian and

having limited resources to cope with such a grave situation," he said. Police are now looking for the factory's owners. Shouting and sobbing relatives of trapped workers, desperate to get inside the building, scuffled with police during the night, witnesses said. Rescuers used arc lights to work through the night. Steady streams of bodies were stretched out, covered by white sheets. Abdus Salam, a doctor at Karachi's civil hospital, said 10 women were among the dead. "The bodies are badly charred," he said, adding that at least 65 other workers had suffered broken bones after jumping out of windows to escape the fire. Firefighters on crane lifts reached through the gutted building's windows to rescue some trapped survivors, who were taken to local hospitals suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Mohammad Saleem, 32, who broke a leg after jumping out of the second floor, said he and his colleagues were hard at work late when flames suddenly reached their section. "It was terrible. Suddenly the entire floor filled with fire and smoke and the heat was so intense that we rushed towards the windows, broke its steel grille and glass and jumped out," he said. "I fell on the ground and it was extremely painful. "I saw many people jumping out of windows and crying in pain for help." Negligence Officials said the cause of the Karachi fire was not yet known, but Rauf Siddiqi, the industry minister for Sindh province, said the factory owner was under investigation for negligence. "We have ordered an inquiry into how the fire erupted and why proper emergency exits were not provided at the factory so that the workers could escape," Mr Siddiqi said. Earlier, the blaze in Lahore trapped dozens of workers in the shoe-making factory, killing 21 and injuring 14 others, local officials and medics said. Tariq Zaman, a government official,

At least 280 people have been killed in a fire that ripped through a packed garment factory in the Pakistani port city of Karachi. The fire engulfed the four-storey factory, where 1,500 people are believed to have worked, in a matter of minutes on Tuesday evening. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue to try to gain access to some parts of the building. Hundreds of bodies have so far been pulled from the smoldering remains of the building and dozens of other people were injured when they were forced to jump out of windows to save their lives. Pakistani officials say many of the workers were trapped as the factory had only one exit and that its windows were blocked by metal bars. The blaze came shortly after another at a shoe plant in Lahore that killed at least 21 people. Karachi fire chief Ehtesham Salim said the garment factory was a fire hazard. "The factory was flimsily built. It was packed like a box with little room left for ventilation. There were no emergency exits," he said. Mr Salim said about 35 fire engines took part in the emergency at the factory, which workers said made underwear and also plastic utensils. He added that the blaze was Karachi's "biggest fire in terms of deaths in decades". "Our firemen are searching every nook and corner of the factory despite

said the fire was caused by a faulty electricity generator. Karamat Ali, a spokesman for the local government's emergency rescue team, said fire crews succeeded in bringing the blaze under control after several hours and rescue workers had evacuated all those trapped inside. The office of prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said he "expressed shock and grief over the loss of precious lives and directed the concerned authorities to provide best medical treatment to the injured". The garment trade as a whole is vital to Pakistan's shaky economy.

Trio Jailed For Pack Rape Of Canadian Tourist

Three teenagers have been jailed for the rape of a Canadian backpacker in Broome last year, in what the judge described as a cowardly act of savagery. The court heard the 22-year-old victim was 'on the holiday of a lifetime' in Broome when she became lost walking home from a bar. She had left Murphy's Bar in the early hours of the morning with her friends when she became separated from them and ended up alone and lost on Anne Street in old Broome, a notorious trouble spot. The court heard she called her boyfriend, worried she would get into trouble if she remained alone. Five people approached her, including two 18-year-old men, a 13-year-old boy, a 17-year-old man and an 18-yearold woman. The group's female, Agnes Oliver, threatened the victim with a broken bottle and she was punched in the face several times while two of the men stole her handbag. The tourist followed the group, pleading for her bag back as it contained her passport and credit cards. By now the group had moved into a nearby park where they removed a phone and $30 from the wallet. Oliver continued to threaten the victim. Abused Two of the men, Earvin Jared Dimer and Darren Peter Upkett, and another of the boys, began touching the woman and one of them removed her bikini top. Two of the men then raped the victim. The court was told they also attempted to photograph the victim's battered body, using the phone they had stolen from her. The woman managed to get to the police station and was later conveyed to hospital. Oliver, Dimer and Upkett appeared in the Broome District Court charged with one count each of aggravated robbery and three counts each of aggravated sexual penetration without consent. Oliver's lawyer argued she was intoxicated by alcohol and cannabis at the time and "really didn't know what she said" to the victim that night. Judge Christopher Stevenson said although Oliver did not physically take part in the sexual assault, she "did nothing to assist, she in fact encouraged and assisted Upkett by threatening to punch the victim." He condemned Oliver's role in the attack, saying "she took the lead, armed with a broken bottle to commit the robbery." The court heard that within a year of turning 18, Dimer had already committed four serious offences. The lawyer for Upkett said his client had been addicted to alcohol and cannabis by age 12 and he was the only one who showed remorse at the time of the attack, telling the victim that he was sorry, saying "I'll give your stuff back, I'll come back." Callous savagery In sentencing on Monday, the judge described the events as "cowardly and callous acts of savagery." Judge Stevenson also said "not one of you had the human decency to protest" at what was happening, and noted that the group mentality fuelled the attack, as did alcohol and cannabis. "I accept it was opportunistic and I also accept the violence and sexual penetration were opportunistic but it's clear you were out to steal whatever you could find, and it's not surprising something happened," he said. Oliver and Dimer were sentenced to five and a half years' jail each. Upkett was sentenced to six and a half years' jail. A 14-year-old boy has already been given a ten month conditional release for his part in the incident. An 18-year-old, who has pleaded not guilty to his charges, faces trial next month.

A woman in the United States may soon be $US100,000 richer after she unwittingly bought a Renoir masterpiece at a flea market. The unnamed woman bought a box of random items, including the painting by French master Pierre-Auguste Renoir, for $US50 in the US state of Virginia. Her mother later convinced her to take it to a local auction house after noticing Renoir's faded signature on the back. The director of the Potomack auction house, Anne Craner, says she took one look at the painting and knew it was the work of the French master. "She opened up the bag and straight away it just looked right," she said. "I mean it's the colour, it's the vibrant colour, and its the pinks and the purples. Renoir is known for his rapid brush strokes. And colour is really important with Renoir." Ms Craner believes the painting is a lost treasure from Renoir. The river scene with vibrant purples and pinks from about 1879 has not been seen for almost a century. But when the woman first snapped up the box, it was a doll and a plastic cow that caught her eye. She stuffed the painting into a white rubbish bag and moved from place to place. She was even tempted to throw it out, but auctioneers predict the painting will now earn her $100,000 when it goes under the hammer on September 29.

B.C. Halves Tolls On Port Mann Bridge

The B.C. government is reducing the tolls on the new Port Mann Bridge to $1.50 from $3 for cars but just for the first year. Previous plans were for car drivers to shell out $3 each way to use the new bridge, or as much as $1,500 a year for daily commuters and more for drivers of larger vehicles. The announcement was made Wednesday by B.C. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Mary Polak. "Drivers who register for a free windshield decal and tolling account by Feb. 28, 2013 will be guaranteed the half-price introductory toll rate for the first year," Polak said in a release. "As a further incentive to register, drivers who sign up before Nov. 30, 2012 will receive a $30-credit on their account, equivalent to 20 free trips for passenger vehicles." Registered users will also be eligible

for various discounts and incentives, including a 25-per-cent discount during peak hours for HOV users, resulting in a reduced rate of $1.13, the release said. Polak said the introductory toll rate, $30 credit and other discounts will provide an incentive for drivers to register for a free tolling account. The tolls will start when eight lanes of the 10-lane bridge between Coquitlam and Surrey open in December. NDP Transportation critic Harry Bains says it's no accident the reduction will take effect just before the next election, when the unpopular tolls are expected to be a big issue for voters. "This government has a history of saying anything, doing anything just before the election to stay in power. That's their history and I think they'll do the same thing before this election," said Bains.

The feds are working on a sameday notification system so provincial governments know right away when someone has been removed from Canada and can quickly cut off welfare and other benefits, QMI Agency has learned. A government source confirms the system is set for launch in the fall. Currently, the feds send faxes to provincial authorities to inform them of someone's deportation - a process Immigration Minister Jason Kenney admits could be faster. "We've identified gaps in the system, quite frankly, I think based on the fact that we've been using old technology," Kenney said Monday. "I've been in discussions, as have my officials, with the Ontario department of social services in particular for the past year or 18 months to improve communications." Provincial governments blame slow info from the feds for their inability to stop sending welfare cheques to rejected refugee claimants, even months after they've been kicked out of the country. The Canada Border Services Agency

Ontario Should End Easy Welfare For Refugee Claimants: Feds

has found that's especially burdensome for Ontario, where thousands of dubious Roma - or Gypsy - refugee claimants from Hungary congregate yearly, qualifying for welfare as soon as they set foot in Canada. Though 95% of their claims are ultimately rejected, abandoned or withdrawn, they still collect welfare benefits while their cases are processed. Kenney said Ontario should impose a three-month waiting period for refugee claimants to qualify for welfare benefits. "So, we've asked Ontario to review the eligibility rules for welfare," he said. "We don't think it's helpful to create a pull factor for false claims." Ontario's ministry of community and social services doesn't like Kenney's idea. "The ministry has concerns about the potential human rights implications of altering the current eligibility criteria," Charlotte Wilkinson said from the ministry's media management office. Wilkinson also blamed the FederalProvincial Fiscal Arrangements Act for forcing Ontario to automatically grant welfare to refugee claimants.

Bad Timing For Leadership Review Says Cummins

B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins says he's "not overly concerned" about challenges to his leadership, which could force him to step down less than a year before a provincial election. Discontent within the B.C. Conservatives has led some of the party's board members to call for a formal leadership review. "Regardless of what you do, it's just not going to meet with everyone's satisfaction," said Cummins Wednesday morning. "You do the best you can and if you've acted in what you think is in the best interest of the party, you've done your best and you sleep well at night. And I don't have any trouble sleeping at night," he said. Ballots have been sent to party members and the results will be announced at the party's annual meeting on Sept. 22. If party members decide they want a formal leadership review, Cummins says he would have to step down immediately. The party would then hold a leadership race, a leadership convention and possibly select a new head just months before a provincial election, said Cummins. "All of that could take two or three months to get it over with, and meanwhile our election campaign would stall, and the organization would stall, our candidate, our nominations, everything," said Cummins. "It's not a wise idea from a strategic point of view." As of Wednesday 10 of the 18 B.C. Conservative board members had joined a group called "Friends of John Cummins." They're encouraging members at large to vote not to hold a formal leadership review The Conservatives' only elected member, Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen, is not among those endorsing Cummins' leadership.

Feds To Strip 3,100 Of Citizenship Tropical Storm Leslie Slams Into Over Fraudulent Applications Newfoundland
The hurricane watch ended for Newfoundland late Tuesday morning, but the damage had been done. Tropical storm Leslie arrived around 8:30 a.m. and battered the province for several hours, bringing nearhurricane-force winds, heavy rains and widespread power outages. "Leslie made landfall near Fortune on the Burin Peninsula and still packing a wallop," Environment Canada said Tuesday morning. Fortune is located on Newfoundland's southern tip. Rain poured down at a rate of about 25 millimeters per hour in some areas, while winds reached sustained speeds as high as 120 km/h. Powerful gusts were reported at Long Pond (124 km/h), Argentia (120 km/h), St. John's International Airport (131 km/h) and at a private weather station at Cape Pine (137 km/h). More than one transport truck crashed on the Trans Canada Highway. Const. Dennis Hann of the N.L. RCMP posted a picture of one and cautioned drivers. "Do not stop to take pictures or look at this semi truck. You will cause another crash and get a ticket!!" St. John's city councilor Danny Breen tweeted, "Well so much for the siding on the house..." Lorin Breen of St. Mary's -- located about 120 km southwest of St. John's -- said Leslie took about six hours to pass through his area, leaving a trail of destruction: Telephone poles were downed, trees were uprooted on his lawn and his uncle's shed "blew apart." "It's pretty crazy. The vehicles were lifting right up in the driveway. It's the windiest I've ever seen it here," he told QMI Agency. Lorin Breen said the power was out for a few hours. Newfoundland Power kept a running list on its website of communities

With almost 11,000 applications for citizenship and permanent residence in question, federal immigration officials are expanding their crackdown on fraudsters. "We have identified up to 3,100 Canadian citizens who may have obtained their citizenship fraudulently, and we will pursue revocation for those who have," Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said Monday. The feds have also flagged about 7,500 possibly bogus permanent residents, many of whom might live outside Canada. "To date, thanks to these investigations, we have removed or denied admission to Canada to more than 600 former permanent residents, and we have denied about 500 citizenship applications where the applicants failed to meet the residence requirements," said Kenney. To maintain permanent resident status, someone has to be present in Canada for two out of five years. A permanent resident must live here three out of the last four years before applying for citizenship. Crooked consultants often help foreigners establish a fake paper trail to convince

authorities that a citizenship or permanent residence applicant is in Canada, when they're often abroad working in a tax haven. Fraudsters hail from about 100 countries, through Kenney says a "disproportionate number" of cases come from Persian Gulf states. He's even seen flyers from crooked consultants advertising easy-to-get Canadian citizenship as a way to access to public health care and subsidized university and college education. "I've never heard of these flyers, this kind of pitch being made for other countries," said Kenney. "My impression is that this is a greater problem in Canada." Meanwhile, Canadians have given the feds about 4,100 tips about immigration fraud through a special tip line that's been operating for about a year. Kenney says within one day of launching the tip line, authorities got enough information to catch an alleged fraudster after he showed up to take his citizenship oath in Toronto. Fraud tips can be called in at 1-888242-2100, or sent through email to Citizenship-fraud-tips@cic.gc.ca

Motorists in most of Canada got a rude shock Tuesday night when gasoline prices rose sharply. Among the hardest hit was Montreal, where prices reached as high as $1.53 a liter for regular, up 13 cents a liter and an increase of almost 20 cents since the start of summer. Price tracking website GasBuddy.com reported gasoline could still be had in some stations in the city for as low as $1.30. At one downtown Montreal gas station, there were fewer motorists than usual filling up their tanks Wednesday morning. "We're being whacked," said Jared Lang, who had to pay $1.51 a liter to fill up. "I don't even want to fill up my car. I put in maybe $10 to $15 at a time, hoping it goes down and I live with it." Lang recalled that when he started

where the power was out due to "severe weather conditions" and later announced, "Damage assessment ongoing. Hope to have majority of customers back on by midnight; however some customers may be off into tomorrow. Be safe." Thousands of customers remained in the dark Tuesday afternoon after Leslie was downgraded to a "post-tropical storm" and communities across the province emerged to assess the damage and begin cleaning it up. The city of St. John's asked residents to stay away from the downtown while crews dealt with debris and damage to buildings. "We can't stress enough that pedestrians need to stay out of downtown (Water/ Duckworth) for their own safety," the city tweeted. In the tiny town of Badger, where Mayor Michael Patey declared a state of emergency Monday in advance of the storm, officials worried about a 24-metre-high empty water tower being blown down and set about dismantling it. Newfoundland was trending on Twitter throughout the day, as users reported on the damage in real time. "Power off, trees down, roof tops lifting off buildings -- #Leslie packing a punch here in southeastern #Newfoundland," Harry Tucker wrote. In addition to closures and cancellations, helpful citizens also tweeted about establishments that were open, like the liquor store and Timmies. "Tim Horton's Major's Path is open... line-up for inside is OUT IN THE PARKING LOT," wrote Tara Bradbury. By late afternoon, all storm warnings were called off after Leslie had mostly moved back out to sea, and the high winds were expected to recede as the day went on.

U Of T, McGill Crack World University Top 20

McGill University is the top-ranked Canadian school for the ninth consecutive year, just ahead of the University of Toronto, in the QS World University Rankings released this week. The institutions, ranked 18th and 19th in the world, edged out Duke University which rounds out the top 20. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was in first place this year, bumping Harvard and Cambridge a spot down to second and third place, respectively. U of T has made a big jump in the past two years after placing 29th in 2010 and 23rd in the world last year. Its arts and humanities program placed 15th in the world and U of T also scored well in life sciences and medicine (18) and natural sciences (19). McGill principal and vice-chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum said she was "pleased" by her school's consistently high placing in the rankings but a spokesman warned that the school's placing could slip without stable government funding. Vice-principal Olivier Marcil said "it would be a miracle" if McGill was still in the top 20 next year. When asked how his school has been able to compete with the likes of Harvard, Yale and Cambridge, Marcil replied "surely not by financial means. We're not in the same league." He said the international flavour of the downtown campus and talented professors and researchers, coupled with the teacher-student ratio, has kept McGill in the big leagues. Four of Montreal's largest hospitals are affiliated with McGill's medical school and the $1.5-billion McGill University Health Centre will be the largest hospital in Canada when it opens in 2015. Other Canadian universities in the top 50 were Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique (41) and the University of British Columbia (45th). The QS rankings rate such indicators as quality of research, graduate employability and student-faculty ratio. The list is published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds, a Londonbased consulting firm.

The union said ICBCs last offer was a two-per-cent wage increase over a four-year contract.

Former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed is dying, his political successor Don Getty, said Tuesday. Getty, who said hes been in contact with Lougheeds family, described the condition of the Canadian political titan as "pretty touch and go ... hes definitely having blood and breathing problems." The man who served as premier from 1985-1992 said he last saw Lougheed two weeks ago and described his friend as weak, thin and shaky, but he still had fight. The ailing Lougheed is in the hospital named after him, in honor of his achievements as Alberta premier from 1971 to 1985. His family on Tuesday thanked the public for their thoughts and prayers. Peter Lougheed and his family are very thankful for all of your kindness and prayers at this time, reads a statement released Tuesday by the family of Lougheed, 84. We are grateful to the media and the public for respecting our privacy. Friends and admirers have been sadly watching Lougheeds health challenges that have seen him in and out of hospital recently, said Ron Ghitter, one of the original 49 MLAs elected with him in 1971. Its been going on for a couple of months, said Ghitter. Hopefully, he can turn it around. Fellow 1970s-era PC cabinet minister Allan Warrack said he last saw Lougheed at a bittersweet Edmonton reunion a year ago marking the 40th

anniversary of the partys ascension to power. Its not certain what illness Lougheed is battling but sources say hed been suffering from heart ailments and pneumonia. He was very, very energetic and friendly but he didnt quite look himself, said Warrack. We kind of reflected on the old days. Many of those reflections, said both Ghitter and Warrack, centered on Lougheeds vision of a more modern province benefiting more from its energy wealth. A major part of that was the mid-70s establishment of the Heritage Savings and Trust Fund. They also say Lougheed was responsible for updating the provinces social and justice systems while giving taxpayers a window on industry with the purchase of businesses like Pacific Western Airlines and other corporations. Lougheed, they said, also brought Alberta to the forefront constitutionally in staring down Ottawa during the energy wars of the late 1970s and early 80s. Last June, Lougheed was honored as Canadas greatest premier of the last 40 years. Both men said its a designation thats well-deserved. Surely to God he was, said Warrack. Calgary lawyer and one-time Edmonton Eskimo Lougheed was first elected to the legislature in 1967, from where he worked to topple a Social Credit dynasty of 35 years.

Immigrate The Right Way

When immigrating to Canada, you dont have to use an immigration representative to represent you. Immigration consultants, lawyers, and other representatives Choose carefully Immigration consultants, lawyers, and other representatives give immigration advice and help to visa applicants, usually for a fee. You do not need to hire an immigration consultant. It is up to you. Your application will not be given special attention or guaranteed approval if you use a consultant. All the forms and information that you need to apply for a visa are available for free. If you follow the instructions in the application guide, you can complete the application forms and submit them on your own. Immigration consultants, lawyers, and other representatives - Who can represent you Authorized immigration consultants, lawyers, Qubec notaries, and paralegals regulated by a law society are people who can offer immigration advice to applicants. Some applicants may choose to use such a representative to act on their behalf with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the Immigration and Refugee Board or the Canada Border Services Agency. There are two types of immigration representatives: paid and unpaid. Paid immigration representatives Only the following people may charge a fee or receive any other type of consideration, to represent or advise you in connection with a Canadian immigration proceeding or application: lawyers and paralegals who are members in good standing of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society Notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambre des notaires du Qubec, and Immigration consultants who are members in good standing of the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council The Government of Canada will not deal with non-authorized immigration representatives who charge for their services. NEW: Other people who offer paid immigration advice With the coming into force of Bill C-35, anyone who provides paid advice prior to the filing of an application or the commencement of a proceeding will need to be an authorized representative. This means that some third parties who were not formerly required to be recognized to provide paid advice will now have to refer people to an authorized representative or become authorized themselves. Some examples of paid advice or representation that will now be captured through the implementation of Bill C-35 include: representing the applicant during an immigration proceeding by speaking on their behalf. providing guidance to a client on how to select the best immigration stream and complete the appropriate forms. Immigration consultants, lawyers, and other representatives - Tips on choosing one It is your decision whether or not to use an immigration consultant, lawyer, Qubec notary or paralegal regulated by a law society. No immigration representative has special access to our programs and services and no one can guarantee you a visa. All the forms and guides you need to apply for any type of visa are available for free. Choosing an immigration consultant: Ask for recommendations from people you trust. Talk to several potential advisers before choosing one. Ask about their training and experience: find out if they are authorized ask for references find out how long they have been in business. Discuss what services they will provide and the fee. Get this information in writing. Ask questions. You should be wary of a consultant who refuses to answer your questions. Be careful of anything that sounds too good to be true. If you are choosing an immigration consultant in Canada, you can also contact the Better Business Bureau before making your choice. They can tell you if any complaints have been raised against immigration consultants, lawyers, and other representatives that operate in Canada. Once you have chosen an immigration consultant: Make sure you get a written contractread it carefully before you sign it. Make sure that all the promised services are listed and the fee is clearly set out. Do not leave original documents or photos with the consultant. Do not sign blank application forms. If the consultant has forms or documents for you to sign, do not sign them unless you are able to read them. If you dont understand them, bring someone with you to translate. Make sure to get copies of any documents that are prepared for you. Any time you make a payment, get a signed receipt. Make sure your consultant updates you on your application on a regular basis. If you change your mind about your immigration consultant, you do not have to continue with them. You can change your representative at any time or deal directly with the visa office or the in-Canada immigration office yourself. If you change your representative, you must notify CIC. You must provide your representatives name and contact information on your application form whether they are paid or not. If your immigration consultant says that this is not necessary, this is false. You should verify the accuracy of your representatives advice. If you appoint a representative who is not a member of one of the designated bodies, your application will be returned.

Healthy Eating
In this section, you will learn about the steps you may wish to take to make sure you're eating a heart-healthy diet. Whether you're cooking at home or eating out, you'll be able to make hearthealthy choices that will help you lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Healthy eating is one of the most important things you can do to improve your general health. Nutritious, balanced meals and healthy snacks may reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke by helping you increase your intake of heart-healthy nutrients, manage your weight, keep your blood pressure down, control your blood sugar levels and lower your cholesterol. A healthy eating plan may also boost your overall feeling of well-being, giving you more energy and vitality. It may make you look better and feel good about yourself, inside and out. With the vast array of food choices available today, it's difficult to know where to begin. You may wish to start by aiming to include items from the four food groups: vegetables and fruit, whole-grain products, lower-fat milk products and alternatives, and lowerfat meat and alternatives. Eating Well with Canadas Food Guide provides direction on the types and amount of food we should eat for overall health. It makes it easier than ever to plan your meals and snacks around a wide variety of delicious and heart-healthy foods. Reading the Nutrition Facts table on food products will help you make smart choices. When you're grocery shopping, look for the Health Check symbol on food packaging, the Heart and Stroke Foundation's food information program, based on Canada's Food Guide. Its your assurance that the product contributes to an overall healthy diet. No matter how much time you have or don't have for cooking, you can make quick and easy heart-healthy meals by following these simple suggestions. Heart-healthy cooking focuses on lowering your intake of fat, especially saturated and trans fats. It also includes limiting salt while upping fibre and making sure you eat four to 10 servings of vegetables and fruit a day. Start by changing the proportions of your plate so that protein sources such as meat and fish are no longer the main attractions. Instead, fill about half of the plate with a colourful variety of vegetables, a quarter of the plate with whole grains such as brown rice and 100% whole-grain bread. Fish, poultry, lean meat or legumes (chickpeas, lentils, tofu) should make up the remaining one-quarter of the plate. Slash the fat Trim all visible fat from meat and take the skin off poultry and fish to reduce fat and calories. Instead of pan-frying or deep-frying, try baking, broiling, grilling or roasting (on a rack, so fat can drip away). Fish may be poached in water, sodium-reduced tomato juice or lower-fat milk. To saut, use a nonstick pan or a small amount of hearthealthy olive or canola oil. If you're sauteing, steaming or boiling a vegetable, it's just as easy to cook two or more in the same pot or pan. If you're making brown rice, cook twice the amount you need so you'll have enough for another meal. Substituting healthy ingredients for less healthy ones won't take any more time and may even save you money. Use plain, lower-fat yogurt instead of sour cream, lower-fat cheese instead of the full-fat type, and evaporated skim milk instead of cream. Cook wholewheat pasta instead of white. Replace some of the white flour in a recipe with 100% whole-wheat flour. Instead of salt, spice things up with fresh or dried herbs. Try dill with fish, paprika with chicken or ginger with beef. Lightly sauted garlic, onions and sweet red peppers add flavour as well as assorted nutrients that promote good health. Following Canada's Food Guide recommendations will ensure that you'll get your daily requirements for vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients, helping you to achieve overall good health and vitality. Eating plenty of vegetables and fruit. Every day, include a dark green (such as broccoli, asparagus and romaine lettuce) and an orange (such as carrots and sweet potato) vegetable.

Getting Started Saving

Take a tip from financial experts and wealthy Canadians: The secret to saving money and accumulating savings is to pay yourself first.

Save Better

The most effective way to save. Pay yourself first!

Even if you think you dont have enough to save, start with a small amount. Maybe you put away $100 each payday, or $25 or even $10. After a few months, you probably wont even notice the deduction, and you may even find you can increase the amount. When you put a little bit aside from each paycheque and put it into your savings, youre paying yourself first and making your future your top priority. How to start saving better now! If you want to start saving, or you want to save more, this step-by-step guide can help. Just find your starting point and discover the saving solution thats right for you. Im not saving at all Solution: Start saving, anything At the end of each day or each week, empty the change from your wallet into a jar. After a month, count it up. Congratulations! Youve just saved this amount without really trying. Use this tally to estimate how much you could put aside into a savings plan without missing the cash, and proceed to the next saving solution. I save a little, but I also spend a lot Id like a painless way to save more Solution: Begin a savings program Open a Savings Account. Set up a Pre-authorized Transfer Service, so you can start moving money into your savings account automatically. Arrange for the smallest amount of money you think you can safely put aside on the day you get paid and still meet financial obligations. (You dont want to have to pull money out of savings because youve created a cash flow problem.) Set a reminder in your calendar to reassess your cash flow after three

What does pay yourself first mean? Paying yourself first simply means that you make it a habit to put money into your savings account first as soon as you get paid, and before you have time to spend it on things you dont really need. Lets face it: No matter how much or how little you earn, you probably have more than enough ways to spend your paycheque. There are all the essentials you have to pay for, from accommodation to transportation. Then there are things like clothing, gifts or entertainment. These items are discretionary, but still an important part of life. The best of intentions If youre like most Canadians, you have really good intentions to save whatevers left over after your expenses have been covered. The problem is that theres usually not much money left. So your savings never grow. Its time to shift into pay-yourself-first mode, and shift your priorities. How to do it Set up a Pre-authorized Transfer Service to make it easy, and to make sure it happens.

months. Do you miss the money? Could you increase the amount slightly? Make adjustments, and youre on your way to being a better saver. Savings Workout #1: Make saving a habit Athletes achieve excellence through a commitment to daily training and practice. Apply those same principles to your finances by training yourself to save a little bit every day. After a month or so, that daily routine will turn into a habit. A great way to start your savings habit is to use the TD Canada Trust Simply Save program. It makes saving a snap! Make saving automatic! Paying yourself first is a lot easier to do and easier to stick with when you make it automatic. By arranging for pre-authorized transfers to take place at a specified time for a specified amount, you dont have to think about whether or how much to save. When you take the decision-making out of saving, youre much more likely to be a successful saver. Get your tax refund every payday If youre contributing regularly to your RSP or making tax-deductible childcare or spousal support payments, you can ask the government to deduct less tax from your paycheque by filing form T1213, Request to Reduce Tax Deductions at Source, with the Canada Revenue Agency. (Quebec residents should also file form TP-1016-V, Application for a Reduction in Source Deductions of Income Tax, with Revenue Qubec.) If your request to have withholding taxes reduced is approved, you get a tax break with every paycheque, instead of getting it as a refund when you file your annual return. Once you know how much more youll get each payday, use it to further your savings by starting a savings plan, or by increasing your Retirement Savings Plan (RSP) contributions or other savings. Better yet, make savings automatic by setting up a Preauthorized Transfer Service.

Finding the money to save Kick-start your savings habit by depositing a small sum into your account. Youll get a psychological boost knowing that your savings plan has started successfully. Here are some places you may find a little extra cash thats hiding in plain sight. Go through your files and consolidate miscellaneous savings account balances into one account. Clean out cluttered closets, the garage or shed, and the attic, and sell unwanted items at a lawn sale or online. Take old books, CDs and DVDs to a used book and record store. Consider cashing in collections by visiting a dealer that specializes in that area. Check for unclaimed balances. Visit the Bank of Canada and search the database of abandoned accounts by entering your name and province. Check your files in case you have some of the $112 million in matured and uncashed Canada Savings Bonds existing in Canada. File your taxes. If you havent filed this years (or previous years) income tax return, do so now. You could have a refund owing to you. Consider cashing in any unnecessary duplicate insurance policies that have a cash surrender value.

Wound Care: Your Essential First Aid Care Guide

Home Safety: Preventing Burns, Cuts, and More
Accidents happen, right? Not necessarily. In fact, some of the most common injuries that occur at home dont have to happen. About a third of all injuries happen in the home, and they tend to hit small children and elderly adults most. This guide will help you prevent five common home injuries: falls, choking and suffocation, burns, poisoning, and knife cuts. While these injuries can be serious or even fatal, preventing them generally just takes a little thought and time. Home Safety: 5 Tips for Preventing Falls Falls are the No. 1 cause of home injuries and death. The two groups most at risk for falls are children younger than 5 and adults over the age of 70. Try these strategies to prevent falls at home: Make the bathroom a no-slip zone. Install grab bars and nonslip mats or appliques in the tub or shower. Use a bathmat with a nonskid bottom and clean up any water that splashes on floors right away. Safety-proof stairs. Remove clutter from stairs and walkways. Stairs inside and out should have handrails, preferably on both sides. Have good lighting over stairs. For babies and toddlers, install hardware-mounted safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs. Pressuremounted gates are less effective. Never use accordion-style gates. Put a guard on indoor lofts, landings, balconies, and stair banisters if your child can slip between the posts. Plexiglas is a good option because it bends, is easy to cut, and doesnt shatter. Toss the throw rugs. Throw rugs are a big tripping hazard for young and old people. At the very least, tape or tack them to the floor. Leave a light on. Ideally, have night-lights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and halls. Make windows safe. Window screens are not strong enough to prevent falls. Install window guards with quick-release mechanisms (in case of fire) on upper floor windows. Keep furniture away from windows, especially in childrens room, and always watch children around windows. Home Safety: Prevent Poisoning About 90% of poison exposures happen at home, making it the second leading cause of accidental death in the home. Nonfatal poisonings are most common among children under 5 years old. The most common causes of these poisonings are: Cleaning and household products Personal care and beauty products Medicines (especially dangerous are those with iron) Vitamins Plants Lead and carbon monoxide Try these strategies: Know your poisons. It would be easier if every bottle that contained poison was marked with a skull and crossbones, as they are in cartoons. Poisons come in many forms: cosmetics, garden products such as fertilizer, furniture polish, dishwasher detergent, and carbon monoxide from burning fuel. Buy wisely. Purchase products with child safety lids, whenever you can. Store safely. Put any product with a warning label up high and in a locked cabinet. Dont keep medicines in your purse, pockets, or drawers. Keep products in their original containers. Do not use food containers for storage. Watch your children. Most child poisonings occur when parents are cooking dinner or not watching their children closely for other reasons. Follow directions on chemical products. Open a window when you are using them. Never mix household cleaning products together -- bleach and ammonia mixed together create a toxic gas, for example. Keep carbon monoxide outside. Have heaters, stoves, and fireplaces checked by a professional every year. Carbon monoxide can also enter the house through an adjoining garage. Never run an engine or car motor or use a barbecue in a garage. Stay on top of medicines. Follow directions and measure carefully, keep track of when medicines are taken, and put them away right after use. Get rid of expired medicine by crushing or dissolving medications and adding them to old coffee grounds, then place them in a sealed plastic bag in the garbage can. Don't flush them down the toilet unless the instructions say to do so. Monitor use of medicines prescribed for teens. Post the poison control telephone number. Have it near every phone and store it in your cell phone.

How To Tackle Unsafe Drinking

Drinking too much is bad for you. But too many people underestimate what is a safe amount of alcohol. Dr Nick Sheron, a liver expert at the University of Southampton, explains why we need a blood test to alert people to the harm they could be doing to their body. We have a serious problem with liver disease. If you look at the death rates, over the past 30 years or so they have gone down in Europe, but have gone up by 500% in the UK. Practically all of this increase is alcohol related and the most important part of the solution lies in an effective alcohol strategy. We need to target cheap alcohol, and a minimum price for alcohol will do this Around a quarter of the UK population are drinking too much, but may not realise it, and doctors have an important role to play here. Liver disease develops silently. There are no signs or symptoms - the liver has no pain fibers, until disease is very far advanced. By the time the patient presents to hospital the liver is often very scarred. Even if the patient stops drinking entirely at this point, it may be too late and many people die of liver complications over the next year or so. This is partly because doctors do not have the right tools at their disposal. The current blood test doctors use looks for liver enzymes that show up some types of liver damage, but not the liver scarring process, so they can be falsely reassuring. Many patients with liver scarring from alcohol have normal liver enzymes, so the likelihood of a doctor picking up a problem is small. For patients admitted urgently to the liver unit in Southampton, in about nine cases out of 10 it comes as a real shock to find they have serious liver disease that has not been picked up previously. About eight years ago we decided we needed a simple liver-scarring test doctors could use to detect liver disease in patients. It took us a while, but now we have a simple blood test, which we call the Southampton Traffic Light test. The result comes in three colours. Red mean that you have liver scarring and may even have cirrhosis and you probably need to go to hospital for further tests. Green means we cannot find any liver scarring yet and although the test is not completely perfect, we can say that you are highly unlikely to die from liver disease over the next five years, so there is time to cut your drinking to sensible levels. Amber means we cannot be absolutely sure, but there is at least a 50:50 chance that you have scarred liver, and there is a significant possibility that you could die of it within 5 years. We find that for most patients this is a pretty good stimulus to stop drinking or at least to cut down to safe levels. If more doctors used tests like these we could go a long way towards detecting liver disease before it is too late.

Kidney Stones Double Risk Of Dialysis

The majority of people with diabetes are not controlling cholesterol levels effectively - putting them at increased risk of heart disease, a charity warns. Diabetes UK says 90% of people with the disease are having annual checks which will show up problems. But it says the most recent national diabetes audit found many are not then addressing high cholesterol. Chief executive Barbara Young said it meant the health of thousands was being put at unnecessary risk. 'Easy to control' About 3.7 million people in the UK have diabetes. The majority - about 90% - have Type 2 diabetes, where the body makes too little insulin or where it fails to make it properly. In those with Type 1 diabetes, the body cannot produce any insulin at all. The audit includes data on 1.9 million people in England with diabetes. People with both types of the condition have a higher risk of heart disease than the rest of the population. Cardiovascular disease is linked to 44% of deaths in people with Type 1 and 52% with Type 2. percent of the population develops kidney stones. Half of those who get kidney stones will have a reoccurrence -- anywhere from one to several more episodes. "It's important to note that the vast majority of people with kidney stones won't develop permanent kidney damage," said study co-author Tonelli. "But a few will, and that's why it's important for people with stones to get proper follow-up care -- to reduce

Diabetes UK says that because of the existence of statins - cholesterollowering drugs - it is relatively easy to control high cholesterol. People with Type 2 diabetes also have twice the risk of stroke within the first five years of diagnosis compared with the general population. Barbara Young said the findings were worrying, adding: "It is not clear why the high number of people having their annual cholesterol check is not translating into better cholesterol control, but it is an issue that is putting the health of hundreds of thousands of people at risk. "It will often be appropriate to prescribe medication such as statins, but it is no good doing this without explaining the importance of taking the medication regularly and the potentially devastating consequences of not doing so. "Other ways people can help improve their cholesterol levels include losing weight, exercising daily, reducing alcohol consumption, stopping smoking and eating a healthy diet, low in fat." their risk of another stone, and to detect kidney damage if it has occurred." People could try to decrease the likelihood of the development of kidney stones by decreasing their sodium intake, drinking more water and, if needed, taking certain medication, the researchers suggest. It has been previously observed that those who develop kidney stones have kidneys that don't function at optimal levels, which is a factor in the whole issue.

Water pipe smoking, such as hookah or bong smoking, affects lung function and respiratory symptoms as much as cigarette smoking, a new study has revealed. Most users of water pipes and many physicians believe that smoking through a water pipe filters out the toxic components of tobacco and is considerably less harmful than smoking cigarettes. Led by Mohammad Hossein Boskabady, MD, PhD, of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, researchers set out to compare lung function and respiratory symptoms among water pipe smokers, deep or normal inhalation cigarette smokers, and non-smokers. Three groups of smokers, including 57 water pipe smokers, 30 deep inhalation cigarette smokers (S-DI), and 51 normal inhalation cigarette smokers (S-NI) were identified and studied. In addition, 44 non-smokers were studied as a control group. A questionnaire was administered to assess the prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms and lung function tests performed on smokers and control subjects using a spirometer. Results showed an increased prevalence and severity of respiratory symptoms among water pipe smokers and cigarette smokers. Similar effects of water pipe smoking and deep inhalation cigarette smoking on respiratory status were found. "Our study is the first report regarding the importance of the method of cigarette smoke inhalation with respect to effects on the respiratory system," Boskabady said. "Our findings reveal that there were profound effects of water pipe smoking on lung function values, which were similar to the effects observed in deep inhalation cigarette smokers," he concluded.

Kidney Stone

What causes kidney stones?

Kidney stones form when there is a decrease in urine volume and/or an excess of stone-forming substances in the urine. The most common type of kidney stone contains calcium in combination with either oxalate or phosphate. About 75% of kidney stones are calcium stones. Other chemical compounds that can form stones in the urinary tract include uric acid, magnesium ammonium phosphate (which forms struvite stones; see below), and the amino acid cystine. Dehydration from reduced fluid intake or strenuous exercise without adequate fluid replacement increases the risk of kidney stones. Obstruction to the flow of urine can also lead to stone formation. In this regard, climate may be a risk factor for kidney stone development, since residents of hot and dry areas are more likely to become dehydrated and susceptible to stone formation. Kidney stones can also result from infection in the urinary tract; these are known as struvite or infection stones. Metabolic abnormalities, including inherited disorders of metabolism, can alter the composition of the urine and increase an individual's risk of stone formation. A number of different medical conditions can lead to an increased risk for developing kidney stones: Gout results in chronically increased amount of uric acid in the blood and urine and can lead to the formation of uric acid stones. Hypercalciuria (high calcium in the urine), another inherited condition, causes stones in more than half of cases. In this condition, too much calcium is absorbed from food and excreted into the urine, where it may form calcium phosphate or calcium oxalate stones. Other conditions associated with an increased risk of kidney stones include hyperparathyroidism, kidney diseases such as renal tubular acidosis, and other inherited metabolic conditions, including cystinuria and hyperoxaluria. Chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension) are also associated with an increased risk of developing kidney stones.

New research suggests that weight gain of just 1.5 pounds or 0.6 kg per year is fraught with risk, enough to raise blood pressure in college students, with young women being worse off. "If young people continue to gain statement. 1.5 pounds a year and think it doesn't One-year changes in body weight matter, they're misleading themselves were associated with increased blood and increasing their risk of heart pressure (BP) for both men and women. disease," said Margarita Teran-Garcia, In the 25 percent of applicants who had professor of food science and human a weight gain of 5 percent or more, that nutrition at the University of Illinois. gain was associated with higher BP. People with inflammatory bowel disease are also more likely to develop kidney stones. Those who have undergone intestinal bypass or ostomy surgery are also at increased risk for kidney stones. Some medications also raise the risk of kidney stones. These medications include some diuretics, calcium-containing antacids, and the protease inhibitor indinavir (Crixivan), a drug used to treat HIV infection. Dietary factors and practices may increase the risk of stone formation in susceptible individuals. In particular, inadequate fluid intake predisposes to dehydration, which is a major risk factor for stone formation. Other dietary practices that may increase an individual's risk of forming kidney stones include a high intake of animal protein, a high-salt diet, excessive sugar consumption, excessive vitamin D supplementation, and possible excessive intake of oxalate-containing foods such as spinach. Interestingly, low levels of dietary calcium intake may alter the calcium-oxalate balance and result in the increased excretion of oxalate and a propensity to form oxalate stones. What are kidney stones symptoms and signs? While some kidney stones may not produce symptoms (known as "silent" stones), people who have kidney stones often report the sudden onset of excruciating, cramping pain in their low back and/or side, groin, or abdomen. Changes in body position do not relieve this pain. The abdominal, groin, and/or back pain typically waxes and wanes in severity, characteristic of colicky pain (the pain is sometimes referred to as renal colic). It may be so severe that it is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The pain has been described by many as the worst pain of their lives, even worse than the pain of childbirth or broken bones. Kidney stones also characteristically cause blood in the urine. If infection is present in the urinary tract along with the stones, there may be fever and chills. Sometimes, symptoms such as difficulty urinating, urinary urgency, penile pain, or testicular pain may occur due to kidney stones.

educated, while Saif plays a gangster. If all goes well, the film will roll out in November, this year. The shooting will take place in Lucknow, Kolkata and Mumbai. Other details about the film are yet to be revealed. What do you think of Saif and Sonas pair?? We think they will look great together.

The queen of melody Asha Bhosle, who is currently busy with numerous projects, turned 80. Asha's mellifluous voice has charmed her fans for years as she has sung more than 12,000 songs in 20 different languages, including English, Russian, Czech, Nepali, Malay apart from Hindi, in the long six decades she has been in the industry. The singing diva is still seen working on different projects, including judging the recently-concluded popular reality show Indian Idol. Asha had worked in numerous music videos in the past but this year her admirers will see her making debut as an actor with Marathi film 'Maaee' (Mai). "I had great time working for this film," Asha told reporters recently. "As far as my performance is concerned, I think you all should see and tell me how I performed." She said every woman will cry while watching the film. Asha said she liked the 'story' of the film. "I am really thankful to my fans for their love and support," she said. 'I wish that whatever love and support I have received from them should stay with me till the last day," she said. Asha will share screen with actors like Ram Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure in the film. It is likely to hit the theaters on November 23. The singer recently was in news when Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray slammed her and

said she should have refused to work with singers from Pakistan in reality show 'Sur Kshetra'. Asha is a judge on the show. "She should be guiding us, but instead, she is making us guide her," Raj said. Asha reacted diplomatically on the issue and told reporters: "I love Raj Thackeray." The MNS has also directed the Colors TV channel not to broadcast the show that featured Bhonsle and Pakistani singers. However, the dispute was resolved later when Raj gave a green signal for the telecast of the show. Raj and his party withdrew the threats and warnings after filmmaker Boney Kapoor and CEO of Colors TV channel met him this week at his residence. A versatile singer, Asha, had never kept herself confined within Bollywood music. Apart from traditional Indian Classical music and folk songs, she had also sung Rabindra Sangeets and Nazrul Geetis (Songs of Tagore and Kazi Nazrul). The World Records Academy, an international organization which certifies world records, recognised her as the "Most Recorded Artist" in the world, in September 2009. In 2011 she was officially acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist in music history. The Government of Indiahonoured her with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

Although Ranbir Kapoor plays a deaf and mute person in his upcoming silent film "Barfi", he has lent his voice for a promotional song in the film. "Yes, Ranbir Kapoor has sung a song said. titled 'Fatafati'. It is not part of the film As per reports, the song was shot and it was recorded impromptu. We are during the filming of 'Barfi!' and the releasing this song online and on TV, lyrics have some Bengali words. It will not be in the film. Filmmaker Yash Chopra has finally revealed the name of his upcoming flick starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles. The film looks like a love triangle and is titled Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Initially, it was speculated that the film would be titled Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum. Names like London Ishq or Yaara Silli Silli were also considered. However, with Jab Tak Hai Jaan, the 80-year-old Yash Copra has kept alive Yash Raj Films tradition of using song lyrics as titles of the Hindi films. The director makes a comeback with

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 is a sequel to the 2011 hit flick Yamla Pagla Deewana. The film is written by Jasvinder Bath and directed by Sangeeth Sivan. Besides Dharmendra, Sunny Deol

and Bobby Deol, the film stars Neha Sharma, the Russian beauty Kristina Akheeva, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor, Johnny Lever and Sucheta Khanna.

The trailer of Aiyaa looks refreshing. No wonder Rani Mukerji looks stunning but it is southern superstar Prithviraj who grabs the attention. Wearing goggles in the song sequences, Prithviraj Sukumaran looks like the typical south Indian hero. Reportedly it is being said that Rani went out for collecting information, whether Prithviraj is a bankable actor or not. She searched the net for that purpose. Only after looking at an interview of his, she was convinced that he was the perfect person for the role. The movie is said to be inspired by director Sachin Kundalkars short film Gandha (fragrance). However it was filmmaker Anurag Kashyap who had the first idea of making it into a movie. Speaking on that Anurag said, I used to do a play 'S-S-Sarla' with Sonali Kulkarni and she called me once to show a short film by Sachin Kundalkar and I met him there for the first time. I liked it so much that I said this should be made into a whole feature film. Rani plays the role of a Marathi girl, who likes men because of their smell. Feels awkward, but thats what Sachin wanted to show in his film. Speaking to TOI he had said, I like Bollywood films but I am saturated with the Punjabi culture. I feel every regional sensibility has to be represented and in that respect Mani Ratnam is my idol. He brought in the South sensibilities

Dino Morea And Nandita Mahtani To Marry Soon

Wedding bells are going to ring soon for actor turned producer Dino Morea. He will get married to his ladylove fashion designer Nandita Mahtani soon. When asked about his wedding plans, he replied with a smile, "Well, now that's a million dollar question!" However, he added, "Hopefully, I am marrying soon." When Dino was asked about his relationship with the designer, the actor cum producer said, "There are ups and downs in every relationship but the journey with her has been fantastic so far. We have learnt a lot." Dino co-produced Jism 2 with Pooja Bhatt and the film registered success at

the box-office and he is happy for his successful production venture. "It was very flattering to get a call from Mahesh Bhatt who told me that my film had a higher number of people watching it on the first day than Murder or Jannat 2," said Dino. He is all praise for Sunny Leone. "Sunny did not know anything about the language but worked hard to get a grip on it," he added. Dino Morea was in a relationship with Bipasha Basu but they broke up amicably. Nandita was also earlier married to Sunjay Kapoor but they divorced few years after marriage.

After films like Om Shanti Om, Ra.One, Jannat 2, and Desi Boyz, even Yash Raj Films' blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger finds itself in a copyright row. Writer Anand Panda has lodged a police complaint at the Amboli Police Station against the makers of Ek Tha Tiger alleging that they had stolen his script and made it into a film without providing him any compensation. The police have registered an FIR against producer Aditya Chopra and director Kabir Khan based on the complaint lodged by Panda via the Film

and since I am a Maharashtrian I am bringing in mine. Meenakshi Deshpande (the character played by Rani Mukerji) is a woman obsessed with Bollywood. She lives in a fantasy world of her own, where she imagines herself to be Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit or Juhi Chawla. She meets many guys for her marriage but is ultimately smitten by Surya (Played by Prithviraj), a Tamil guy. Speaking about the character Rani said, She is completely mad and very filmy woman. She further added, My character is a huge fan of Sridevi, Juhi and Madhuri. She dreams about them and goes into a fantasy world all the time. The movie is a welcome relief for Rani, as she would be seen in a comedy role after a long time. She played the role of a reporter in No One Killed Jessica, and is again going to be in a serious role in Talaash.

Writer's Association (FWA). Panda said that he had approached YRF with his script sometime in 2011 but after reading it, they turned it down and returned it back to him. When he saw the film he was shocked to see that the film bore many similarities to his own script. He then approached the Film Writer's Association (FWA) with his complaint. An appeal has been made in the Bombay High Court where the case is being heard and then a verdict will be announced.

Teachers are said to be nation builders. They work in close co-ordination with students in helping to build their future. Teachers are in fact role models for students. Bollywood has not been far behind to depict the teacherstudent relationship. On the occasion of teachers day lets have a look at Bollywood best five-teachers depicted on-screen.

Five Best On-Screen Teacher Of Bollywood

everything. As the principal of his college he had asked his students, if anyone remembers the person who landed second on moon. None remembered. The shrewd principal always stressed that being first was the only thing in life. Boman had also won accolades for his role of dean in his earlier movie Munnabhai M.B.B.S.

Aamir Khan:

used to tie a bell around her to know where she is. The maverick teacher Sahai, throws is out, saying his parents should treat her like a human being and not like an animal. The parents were not convinced about him, but ultimately they gave in to his unusual ways and teaching. Amitabh has said that teachers are those individuals, whom one cant forget even in their old days. He was the art and drawing teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh, in Taare Zameen Par. His character showed compassion towards his students. In the very first scene Nikumbh enters the class dressed as a joker. He departed from the usual characterization of a strict teacher with ruler in hand. Nikumbh was a person who believed in having fun along with studies. More than that his out of the way thinking brought a tremendous change in the life of Ishaan (played by Darsheel Safary ). Ishaan was a dyslexic child, who could not explain his problem to the world. The compassionate teacher in Nikumbh , understood his issue . He convinced his parents about his disease and gradually helped him to live a life like a normal child. Amir was also shown as a thought provoking teacher in 3 idiots. He set up a school in Ladakh for impoverished children. He was shown using innovative and practical methods in teaching in his school.

Nasseruddin Shah : Nasseruddin played the role of Prof. Aman Varma in Sir . As a teacher of Philosophy in his college, Nasser was even seen breaking into a jig to the amusement of his class. The character of his was compassionate to understand the problems of his students. He helped a girl with her stammering problem to be successful in life. Truly Bollywood has given us memorable teachers we can be proud of.

Shah Rukh Khan:

Mohabbatein, Black and Aarakshan. Amitabh has played the role of a teacher in various ways. As the strict principal in Mohabbatein, discipline and adherence to rules meant everything to him. In his philosophy love was merely a distraction in the path of success. Also he was shown as the eccentric teacher in Black. Debraj Sahai helps her deaf and dumb student come out her dark world. Her parents

Amitabh Bachchan:

For the be-spectacled Raj Aryan, love was everything in life. As a student he was suspended from Gurukul for falling in love with the principals daughter (Played by Aishwarya Rai). She commits suicide as a result. But Raj returns as a teacher to Gurukul, with violin in hand as teacher of music. He teaches his students to live life to the fullest. He takes the side of the students against the Principal (played by Amitabh Bachchan). To him making his students understand the true meaning of love and life is everything. Shah Rukh sets a bench mark for the role of a teacher in the movie Mohabbatein. For Viru Shashrabuddhi, or Virus, in 3 idiots, success in life meant

Barfi! Movie Review: Magical!

The Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana DCruz starrer is a cinematic joyride
Anurag Basus Barfi! Is the story of Murphy aka Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor) a carefree guy often running into trouble with the police and bringing a smile to everyones face. That he is hearing and speech impaired is only incidental. Yes, it is an integral part of the story, but thats not what its about! Set in Darjeeling in the 70s, the film is essentially about Barfis relationship with the two women in his life Shruti (Ileana DCruz) and Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra). Shruti falls to parental and societal pressure to marry a normal man, but cannot come to terms with the fact that she is still in love with Barfi. Jhilmil, on the other hand, trusts Barfi blindly. One dramatic event puts Barfi in a tough situation, and dynamics change. Through a series of events all three characters discover what love really is. The movie unfolds through the eyes of the various characters whose life has been touched by Barfi, and there is enough mystery in the story to keep you hooked. The strength of the film is the nonlinear narration, raising your anticipation levels and making you curious about how the story is going to unfold. Barfi! Starts off rather slowly, but 15 minutes into the film and the leisurely pace of storytelling becomes pleasurable. The entry of Jhilmil adds a new dimension to the story, and the plot begins to pick up. Most of the dialogues come in the form of narration, but the scenes are so beautifully crafted that you dont really miss the dialogues at all. This is where Pritam Chakrabortys music plays a big role. It is soothing and touching, and takes the screenplay to a new level. Anurag Basu has put his heart and soul into the film, and why it all works is because he keeps it light. The Chaplinesque humour is refreshing, and the situational comedy is adorable and entertaining. Basu just wants you to feel happiness! And he proves that he is a good storyteller. Its a big comeback from him, after facing huge criticism for his last film Kites. Only one complaint: the frequent appearance of three musicians. Its an artistic device (which he has used previously in Life In A Metro), yes, but doesnt add anything to the story or to the effect of the movie. Actually, there is one more. Wish the all the actors, including the supporting cast, looked more authentic in their aged avatars. The bond between Ranbir and Priyanka is built beautifully. Just one scene establishes what they share no explanations required. Ranbir flings his shoe in front of Priyankas window, dozing off on his daddys chest when upset, creating water bubbles that envelope a fire spark, Ranbir and Priyanka shining a glass mirror at each other and holding each others little finger as they fall asleep sheer beauty! Cinematography by Ravi Varman makes the film look like a series of gorgeous paintings. To top everything thats already going for the film are fine and mature performances by Ranbir and Priyanka. With every expression and every action, Ranbir proves he is a master at bringing emotions alive on screen. And very few stars can carry off this kind of physical comedy. You dont feel sympathy for him; you just fall in love with his character. Its the ease with which he does it that makes him so real. He doesnt need dialogues to act! There is not one dull moment when he is in the frame. His performance is simply magical! The love story between Ranbir and Priyanka is all about moments. Its one of the most loveable and innocent romances of our times. Priyankas character loves to watch the world upside down, hates being touched and gets excited when she hears music. She loves looking through a tiny crystal ball gifted by her grandfather and wears bloomers. Jhilmil is created through her reactions to her surroundings without much ado. Kudos to Basu for not having to explain why Jhilmil is the way she is! The camera hovers over Priyankas face (especially eyes), bringing her character to life. Its that wonder in her eyes that makes Priyankas performance special. She has very few scenes in the first half, and her role comes to life only in second part of the film. Plus she has just a few of dialogues through the film! It is amazing how much impact she makes in such a small role (in terms of its length). She creates magic too (just like Ranbir) with her understated and subtle portrayal of an autistic girl. This is undoubtedly one of the best performances of her career. Ileana makes a good impression as the rich Bengali girl torn between love and societal pressures. She proves that she is a mature performer and that the camera loves her. The supporting cast that includes Rupa Ganguly and Saurabh Shukla do a good job too. Watch Barfi! feel it and soak it because it is pure cinematic joy. And above all its magical!

About The Bahamas

The Bahamas lie scattered across more than 100,000 square miles of the western Atlantic Ocean. From a point roughly 70 miles east of West Palm Beach, Florida, the great archipelago extends some 750 miles southward toward the northern Caribbean, almost to the island of Hispaniola. The islands that make up the Bahamas are generally low and flat. The highest point in the entire archipelago, on Cat Island, is just 206 feet above sea level. Except on Andros, the largest island of the chain, there are no rivers or streams. Apart from New Providence where fresh water is shipped in daily from Andros, pumped from wells dug into the underlying rocks fresh water is abundant.

About Early Settlement

Before the Europeans arrived, the Bahamas were inhabited mostly by Lucayan Indians. Christopher Columbus, on his way to the New World, made landfall on San Salvador so its generally accepted in 1492. The islands became known as Bahama, from the Spanish baja mar, or shallow sea. Almost immediately, Europeans began enslaving the Lucayans. By the turn of the 16th century, they had almost been wiped out and a new source of cheap labor was needed. As early as 1503, the Portuguese were enslaving Africans and for several years they controlled the burgeoning industry. By 1520, however, white slave traders of assorted nationalities were going directly to the source. In 1649, Captain William Sayle and a band of Englishmen arrived in the islands from Bermuda. They came with slaves of their own, seeking religious freedom. They called themselves the Eleutherian Adventurers, hence the island of Eleuthera. The name is based upon the Greek word for freedom. And so it began a prosperous agricultural economy that still thrives today.

About Pirates and Privateers

In 1666, New Providence was settled by a second group of Englishmen. They, too, arrived from Bermuda seeking a better life. By then, however, other adventurers had already realized that the Bahamas, close to the already busy shipping routes from the New World to Spain and Portugal, offered quick and easy pickings. By 1660, privatizing (officially sanctioned and often royally commissioned piracy) was already an established industry.

A Voyage to Remember

Sir John Hawkins had already made several journeys to the Caribbean selling slaves when he was joined in 1567 by Francis Drake, still a teenager,

who made the journey as captain of his own ship, Judith. Their voyage ended in disaster when Hawkins and Drake, with a fleet of five ships, took refuge from a storm in the Spanish port of San Juan de Ulua, now called Vera Cruz. There, they were treacherously attacked by a superior Spanish fleet under the command of the new viceroy and Captain General of New Spain, Don Martin Enriquez. Hawkins flagship, Jesus of Lubeck, and two other English ships were destroyed. Only the Minion and Drakes little bark returned to England. Thus began Drakes life-long personal war with Spain. Drake and Hawkins were followed by an endless stream of privateers and pirates that, by the turn of the 18th century, included such notables as Sir Henry Morgan, Blackbeard and Captain Kidd. Captain Henry Jennings established a base in the Bahamas from which to raid the Spanish treasure ships sometime around 1714. Major Stede Bonnet, a wealthy French landowner of Barbados, turned to piracy simply for the adventure. He equipped a 10gun sloop, Revenge, and in 1717 began to raid ships off the Virginia coast. He was hanged for piracy in November 1718. Captain John Rackham, called Calico Jack for the striped trousers he wore, was a pirate captain for the two years 1718 to 1720. During this short time he plundered many ships. He and his men were captured by the crew of a government ship and brought to trial at St. Jago de la Vega, Jamaica. Among Rackhams crew were his mistress, Mary Read, and Anne Bonney. They are the only female pirates on record. Rackham and Read were hanged in Port Royal on November 17, 1720. The pirates were finally driven out of the Bahamas after Captain Woodes Rogers was appointed Royal Governor in 1718. When he arrived at New Providence, about 1,000 pirates were living on the island. Rogers blocked the harbor with two ships so that the outlaws couldnt escape. A fierce fight followed, during which the pirates set fire to one of their own ships and sailed it toward the English ships, forcing Rogers ships back out to sea. Nevertheless, Rogers finally took possession of the island and the pirates were driven away. A statue of Rogers stands in front of the British Colonial Hotel in Nassau. Captain Jean Lafitte, who died in about 1826, was the last colorful figure in the history of piracy. Lafitte, a patriot as well as a pirate, privateer, and smuggler, was enormously successful, but eventually he too lost his land base and his power dwindled.

Bahamas For Visitors

About Nassau

Getting There: For visitors arriving by air, the Bahamas are served through Nassau by most US airlines and by international airlines from Canada and Europe, and to a slightly more limited degree through Freeport. The Out Islands are served mainly by Bahamas Air via connections in Nassau and Freeport. About Paradise Island

The largest and best known city in the Bahamas is Nassau. Located on the island of New Providence, it boasts a population of more than 175,000 people. In times gone by, Nassau was an international playground for the rich. Today, the first city of the Bahamas attracts not only the affluent of the world, but vacationers of every class and culture, especially from America. The city has become a tax haven Nassau has more than 400 banks and is a popular location for international business conferences and meetings. Nassau, the capital city of the islands and a bustling sea port, is a microcosm of Bahamian cultures. Its the largest city on the islands, with a population of more than 150,000, and has long been a center, not only for tourism, but for much of the worlds banking. There are more than 400 banks in the city, offering tax shelters to one and all. Each year, some two million tourists enter the country through its international airport and a million more arrive by cruise ship and private boat. Most of them stay for at least a day or two. New Providence Island, some 21 miles long by seven miles wide, offers a diversity of accommodations, from ultra-modern luxury resorts to intimate hotels. The island also offers a wide variety of attractions, from the all-in-one world of the Atlantis International Resort & Casino on Paradise Island, to deep-sea fishing, diving, walking, swimming, bicycling, driving, windsurfing, parasailing, wave running, shelling, and snorkeling, to diving beneath the waves in a fullblown submarine. Nassau is also a microcosm of the nations history. Visitors can explore its narrow streets, the old British forts, climb the Queens Staircase and wander through outlying villages dating back to the days of slavery and beyond. Throughout the Christmas and New Years holidays, at the height of the Bahamian tourist season, Junkanoo a spirited, Mardi Gras-style celebration born of slavery explodes across the islands, but nowhere is it quite as exciting as in Nassau.

Paradise Island, a long, narrow barrier island connected to Nassau by a toll bridge, is as different from Nassau as Key West is from Miami. While Paradise Island is a world of hotels (The World's finest is at left - Atlantis), restaurants and exciting nightlife, its also a world still quite unspoiled where you can enjoy the sea and beaches that lie close to the bustling streets of the city. <../Paradise Island/paradiseisland.html> Paradise Island, a long, narrow barrier island connected to Nassau by a toll bridge, is as different from Nassau as Key West is from Miami. After years of very careful, measured evolution, mid-size sedans seem to be in the midst of a sea change. Radical redesigns are being subbed in, safetytech and infotainment features are flooding (not trickling) down from the luxury brands at a record rate, and the V-6 engines that used to be the breadand-butter of the segment are no longer to be found on models like the Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, and others. Meanwhile, Honda's best-selling Accord is back with a major redesign for 2013, and it's gone through this transformation quite differently--by keeping the V-6 on the table; improving mileage and refinement across the board; focusing on interior space; and in a turnaround from the brand's recent features philosophy, offering connectivity and safety-tech features on some of the volume models, not just the top-of-the-line trims. Honda clearly walked that line between repeat-buyer expectations and finding its mojo with the current market when setting the Accords design and styling. With a so-called man maximum, machine minimum approach, Honda established packaging (seating front and back) first and then drew an attractive form around that. The Dynamic Intelligent look isnt stunning or head-turning, but at the same time, it maximizes the greenhouse and looks especially interesting in side shots and closeups and it isnt at all slab-sided. Inside, Honda aims to make it luxurious and

modern, and a rather low instrument panelpushed as far forward, and out at the corners, to maximize spacebut with important controls placed quite high within it. Coupes have essentially the same interior as sedans from the seats forward, but with a tail that has a little more of a lift at the back, for a wedgier, more dynamic stance. You give up some practicality, you gain a performance look. All 2013 Accord models remain frontwheel drive, and in order to boost fuel economy, Honda is introducing a couple of all-new powertrains this year. First, Honda brings directinjection engine technology to North America for the first time in models with the four-cylinder engine. You can choose from a six-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Honda claims, with its unique G-Design shift logic, a more immediate acceleration response than conventional automatics or other CVT designs, and that's true. Most four-cylinder Accords make 185 horsepower, while an Accord Sport model makes 189 hp. Otherwise, the V-6 model is definitely still alive in the Accord lineup. For 2013 it makes 278 hp and couples to a six-speed automatic transmission or (in Coupes only) a six-speed manual gearbox. All models include an Econ button that engages a set of fuel-saving measures like more conservative use of accessories and softened throttle response. Both engines run on regular unleaded gasoline and have impressive

2013 Honda Accord

fuel economy ratings: 27 mpg city, 36 highway with the four-cylinder engine and CVT, and up to 21/34 with the V-6. That's not quite up to the base Nissan Altima, but almost. Otherwise, the party loyal might find it a little unsettling that Honda has at last given up its worshipped doublewishbone setup in the Accord, instead opting for more tunable (and cheaper) MacPherson struts that it claims will improve ride and handling while cutting cabin noise and harshness. Honda also reduced weight and keeps away harshness with a new aluminum-andsteel front subframe and some careful underbody aerodynamic work. The Accord drives with much of the verve of previous editions, and the new electric power steering is particularly good. While Honda has shortened the Accord just a bit, it's packaged better. Rear legroom increases about an inch, while shoulder room in front and in back is improved, and trunk space is not only larger but the cargo floor is now flat. And a couple of design traits that Honda draws attention tothe near-level beltline and ample window glass, with thinner-than typical front and rear pillarsshould not only keep your rear passengers from needing Dramamine but also helps you stay safe with a better view outward. Our only letdowns regarding the interior is that the rear seat folds forward in one clunky piece, and the dual-screen layout you get in some trims comes with a confusing control set. All 2013 Accord models come with

four-wheel disc brakes, including Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist, plus stability control, and hill start assist. And in addition to all the expected airbags, the Accord features a new SmartVent technology for its side airbags that eliminates the need for fussy occupant-position detection systems. Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control systems are all available on the Accord, and a cool new LaneWatch Blind Spot Display provides a wide view of the passenger side of the vehicle on the Multi-Information Display (i-MID) screena feature that should be very useful in avoiding mishaps when changing lanes with a full vehicle or distractions. Honda has been criticized for being skimpy on features, but this is no longer the case with the 2013 Accord. Bluetooth connectivity is included throughout the lineup, not just in top trims, and all 2014 Honda Accords include USB and iPod integration plus a rearview camera and an Expanded View Drivers Mirror. The 2013 Honda Accord Sedan will be offered in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, V6, and Touring trims, with the Coupe available in LXS, EX, EX-L, and EX-L V6 models. Adaptive Cruise Control is exclusive to the Touring Sedan, which also includes Hondas first LED projector headlamps, while LED brake lights are included in EX-L and Touring models. All V6 models include daytime LED running lamps.

A Smooth Landing From Los Angeles To Nadi: Thanks To Air Pacific

Thakur Ranjit Singh As the Boeing 737-800 of Delta Airlines, eased into descent mode in a flight from Sacramento to Los Angeles on 16 August, 2012, it was relieving to leave a burning and extremely hot Sacramento. Temperatures here stood at above 38-41 deg C (over 100 F, climaxing at 107) some eight days in a row, when our Fiji hardly heats above 32. Sacramento Airport has really expanded to international level, in an expanding region with some 2.5 million people. In case you did not know, Sacramento is the capital city of the U.S. state of California. In 1967, former president, Ronald Reagan became its governor, and actor of the action movies Commando and the latest one, Expendables 2, Arnold Schwarzenegger was its last governor. Sacramento was cited by Time magazine as America's most ethnically and racially integrated city in 2002. Indeed, it is. You ask any Fijian in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Fiji, somebody would have a relative in Sacramento- so great is Fijian (Indo Fijian) population there, perhaps most for any US city. I have over 100 in-laws, and many people are there through family sponsorships. They are doing well, they have a Mandir, numerous mandalis, have many ritual activities, but social issues and family problems, despite wealth of America, are always there. Richness or being wealthy never solves any social problems. And, yes, they also have English/ Hindi newspaper, Sanatan Sandesh, run by a former Fijian, Kishore Gokul for I which I am a regular writer. So, on this clear afternoon, as Delta flight 4502 glided over Los Angeles, the huge city of Hollywood looked magnificent with tall buildings, and mountains on one side leading on to a blue, deep port on the seaside. After glidingly descending for another 25 kilometres, we approached Los Angeles International Airport. The airport looked strange and unwelcome; there were airlines of many rich developed and other Asian and South American nations. Air New Zealand and Qantas gave us some familiarity and assurance of South Pacific connection. But I was looking for that reassuring sign of our rainbow colour, and lo behold, there it was. As we eased on the ground, near Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) I could see the tail of our island in the sky-yes, our Air Pacific. It was so assuring to see this familiar Pacific sign on this international airport where our part of the world was missing. In Los Angeles, just seeing you Air Pacific in our unique colours is so reassuring that your friend and island in the sky is nearby. Other countries in the Pacific, notably, Samoa, because of our problems, wanted to replace Fiji as the hub and administration centre of Pacific. Even they, including other rival Pacific neighbours have no capability allowed an hour for this. My trip into Nadi from Los Angeles after two years was a complete contrast to 2010 when I found that a burden. Now, it was a breeze and thanks Fiji for the progress you have made. For those critical of Fiji, you need to make a trip to experience the change. And thanks to Air Pacific, our international pride for spreading its wings with pride in parts of the world most airlines from our part of the world does not fly to- that is our Air Pacific, soon to be Fiji Airways. [E-mail: thakurji@xtra.co.nz [Thakur Ranjit Singh was on a trip to Canada and USA and notes his personal experience, services and advice. He has been round the world twice, loves travelling and writing about his experience. This is a travel segment that we will endeavor to bring on a regular basis to assist and inform visitors in planning their trip. Further information on flights can be obtained at Air Pacific website: http://www. discovergold.org/] XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX TRAVELLERS' TIPS VISITING SACRAMENTO Getting there : Air Pacific flies from Nadi to Los Angeles on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays and returns on same days from Los Angeles due to time difference. Domestic flights via Alaskan, American and Delta Airlines connect to Sacramento. When to go: The best times are AprilJune and Sept-Oct. Temperatures are slightly cooler than the summer peak of over 40 Degree C. Nov-Feb are good months if you want to experience the chill of Sacramento winter, jus low temperatures, no snow.. Old Sacramento: The oldest part of the town besides Sutter's Fort is Old Sacramento, which consists of cobbled streets and many historic buildings, several from the 1850s and 1860s. Buildings have been preserved, restored or reconstructed, and the district is now a substantial tourist attraction. Useful websites: http://www. discovergold.org/ www.airpacific.com Thakur Ranjit Singh travelled to Sacramento, CA USA at his own expenses, visiting friends and relatives, in August, 2012.

to have their airlines in Los Angles; hence Fiji really flies the flag of Pacific in Los Angeles. It is so reassuring to know that from next year, it will be flying Fijis flag, as Fiji Airways. And Tom Bradley terminal is so familiar to many Fijians who have passed through LA. This terminal opened for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games and is named in honor of Tom Bradley, the first African-American and longest serving (20 years) mayor of Los Angeles, and champion of LAX. Tom Bradley International Terminal is just minutes walk if you are coming by Delta or United, but there are good sign-posting for those who are confused, and free buses. The ground staff are very friendly to advice on directions. It always helps to arrive four to five hours before the flight to Nadi to avoid crowding; check in open at 6.30 pm for the 11.30 flights; hence you have five hours before flight time. Facilities in TBIT are good with many food outlets including many types of pizzas and Mc Donald. For Fijians linking from Canada, San Francisco or Sacramento, you can bring your roti parcels or sandwiches if you do not like junk food. Make sure to bring in bottles of water if you have long wait, as no drinking fountains are available at TBIT check in area, but discard all liquids before going in for security check. However if you miss your meal then air hostesses in the plane are very friendly and efficient and hot food served is much enjoyable and better now than cold sandwich wrap that I received in 2010. I experienced big improvements after two years. If two of you are travelling then inside aisle seats are recommended because then you will not be disturbed by anybody else to stand up, with four seats, two exits on each side respectively. Choosing window seats for two people would be uncomfortable, with three seats in window side rows. One stranger would be disturbed every time you go out in the 10 hour flight. The seat configuration in Air Pacifics 747-400 is three- four- three (3-4-3). Do not choose window seats if you do not have to, because you hardly see much except for a few minutes light of

LA as it is a night flight. Even landing at Nadi is often in dark, in early hours of the morning. The in flight service was very good, meal and a breakfast plus drinks all throughout the night, and good opportunity to sleep as well, after takeoff. Compared to my flight in 2010, this flight was in a better-fitted aircraft with better seating space and other facilities. I must commend our captains and accompanying offices, I found smooth landings in all Air Pacific flights and at times you do not feel when you have already landed. When I disembarked the flight after 10 hours flight, for somebody over mid-fifties, I still felt fresh and energetic. The new arrival card is a welcome change where all racial references are removed and you are only treated equally as a Fijian. The welcome change is arrival at the arriving lounge where instead of a boiler room as in the past, you are in an air-conditioned nicer area which could be further improved. The immigration officers were helpful and smiling, unlike those unfriendly zombies I found in Canadian Greyhound bus offices and grumpy officers at American-Canadian border near Surrey. More often than not, the visitors queue tends to be very long. Thank God for the new Governments policy on dual citizenship, I checked in LA on NZ passport, but used my Fiji passport to enter Fiji at Nadi Airport. I went in as a breeze in the Fiji citizen counter and had done my duty free shopping and was collecting my baggage when my wife joined me downstairs from the long visitors queue with an NZ passport. In fact the inbound duty-free shopping, taken for granted in our part of the world is foreign to Vancouver. Never put off duty free-buying to Vancouver inbound as they do not have any. This plus duty free shops allowance of only one bottle spirit is a Canadian policy of reducing alcohol usage. There is so much of welcome change at Nadi Airport where the scanning of baggage has made customs clearance so efficient and fast. I found myself outside the terminal just half an hour after landing when as usual, I had

TImes sporTs Dana White, Jon Jones Ready To Move Past UFC 151 Fallout
TImes
down the walls in mainstream America. I cant do that if Im having it out with the UFC. Im totally over it. Im ready to talk with Dana White and move on. Although White claimed the UFC 151 debacle made Jones the most difficult fighter hes ever had to deal with, he said Tuesday the champion wasnt a bad guy. Perhaps White has gotten more accustomed to the unfortunate news of fighters declining matchups. It happened twice more in trying to find Jones an opponent for the promotions third trip to Toronto. After announcing Jones would meet top light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida at UFC 152, the Brazilian turned down the opportunity. Machida cited a month as insufficient time to train for the rematch with arguably the worlds best fighter. Next in line was another former Jones victim, Mauricio Shogun Rua, who also passed on the chance to regain the 205-pound divisions championship belt. People talk a lot of (expletive), but nobody is too excited to jump up and fight Jon Jones right now, White said. Guys were out there saying, I want the title shot next, I want the title shot next. But when it came time for them to get the title shot, they turned it down. A middleweight albeit one that captured the UFC light heavyweight championship a decade ago and a heavyweight tournament title 15 years ago emerged as the unlikely challenger to Jones. The 35-year-old Belfort sent text messages to both White and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta begging for a chance at Jones. Belfort never before imagined hed fight Jones, whom he crowned the best fighter in the world, but wanted to step up when he realized the UFC was scrambling for an opponent. People turned down fights, Belfort said. I cannot understand and I cannot see that. I love challenge. This is another challenge in my life to go for and move forward. White will admit Jones vs. Belfort isnt the ideal fight. But hell just as quickly defend Belforts status as a legitimate threat to Jones belt. Asked for his message to fans complaining about the fight, White raised his voice and responded, Dont buy it. Jones knows that type of bluntness all too well. Im actually getting more and more excited to talk to Dana and get it behind us, Jones said. The UFC is an awesome brand and in this situation, I had to stand up for myself and do what was right. But at the same time, me holding a personal beef against Dana gets me nowhere. Hes still my boss at the end of the day and has every right to express how he feels.

Meeting with White comes before fight with Vitor Belfort for Jones Days before Jon Jones and Vitor Belfort stare at each other from across the octagon in the main event of UFC 152; the 24-year-old champion will face a more intense encounter. Jones will meet with UFC President Dana White for the first time since the cancellation of UFC 151. The relationship between boss and prized employee deteriorated after Jones refused to accept a last-minute fight against Chael Sonnen three weeks ago. I dont take anything back from what I said, White said on a conference call Tuesday. He and I will get into a room in Toronto and talk face to face. White went on a tirade insulting Jones when he announced UFC 151 was off, questioning the young stars heart and mocking his reputation as being selfish and fake among other things. Jones countered by saying it wasnt his fault the whole event was canceled. He suggested White should have booked a more complete card, so all wasnt lost when original opponent Dan Henderson tore his MCL. Neither Jones nor White backed down from previous comments while promoting UFC 152, which takes place Sept. 22 at Air Canada Centre, but both expressed a desire to leave the situation in the past. Im ready for me and Dana to be on the same team, Jones said. It could get us very far. Me, as an individual athlete, and the UFC having a mainstream athlete and a guy whos trying to break

Canucks' Schneider Not Stressed About Goalie 'Situation'

It's been about four and a half months since the Vancouver Canucks were eliminated from the 2012 NHL playoffs, yet the goaltending situation remains unresolved. Roberto Luongo is still on the roster, even after he made it rather clear during his exit media scrum in April, and certain interviews throughout the off-season, that hes ready to, and prefers to, move on. The former team captain and No. 1 goaltender is back in town for the Jake Milford charity golf tournament. While its not known yet if Luongo will join his team for informal skates at the University of British Columbia while hes here, his supposed-successor, Cory Schneider, claims the situation does not bother either of them. Its not something that (Canucks management are) going to do on a whim or that theyre going to solve easily, said Schneider, who skated with about 20 other players Monday. Roberto is still part of the organization. Theyre going to handle it with respect. I dont think either of us is too worried about it. The 26-year-old, who replaced Luongo for Game 3 of the first round against the Los Angeles Kings and then signed a three-year, $12-million extension in June, said hes been training like hell begin the season as the starter, adding its something thats earned and not given. However, hes kept in contact with Luongo, who has been in Florida, throughout the summer. He and I still talk during this whole situation, were still friends and teammates, he said. Its not the easiest situation but were still making the most of it. Were still in touch and it hasnt changed anything between us. For now, the concern lies with the new CBA negotiations and whether or not the NHL season will be delayed. Schneider, along with fellow Canuck Manny Malhotra, headed to New York for NHLPA meetings on Wednesday and Thursday. The goalie said while players are ready to get the new campaign underway, they wont sacrifice the future just to benefit now. We have to make sure its the right deal for us and a fair deal for us, Schneider said. We have to realize that this is going to set us up for the next 5, 10, 15 years, and if we give more back now, then whats going to happen the next time? It has more impact than just this season so you cant get all short-sighted. You have to think about the health of the players union and the league moving forward.

Vodafone Fiji Bati To Battle Italy

The Vodafone Fiji Bati is going to take on Italy at the Saint Marys Rugby League Park in Penrith, Australia on October 12. This was confirmed night by Fiji National Rugby League board chairman Peni Musunamasi. This is part of our preparation for next years Rugby League World Cup in London, he said. Musunamasi indicated that he had been working closely with Fiji Bati coach Rick Stone as they map Fijis pathway to the World Cup. He said Stone has been very helpful and was also communicating with our NRL players about their availability for the Italy game and later the World Cup. This is the first time for Rick to assess our players. That is the local based and those players playing in Australia and New Zealand. For the NRL players we will not reveal any names at the moment since some of them are still playing in the elimination stages of the NRL competition while others are still recuperating. A training session conducted by Stone in Sydney early this year was attended by veteran NRL players like Petero Civoniceva, Wes Naiqama, Jarryd Hayne and Lote Tuqiri. In an earlier interview in Suva, Stone said he was going to go for players who were committed to play for their country. Musunamasi said the naming of the Fiji Bati squad for the Italy clash will be done at the end of the Battle of the Bati competition, which is to start next week. He said Stone has confirmed that the Australian Fijians have been preparing for the competition.
