Rabbis Message
A Service of Healing and Comfort Shalom. . . . The word shalom is one of the single most identifying words that any Jew can utter; as a greeting, a farewell, and of course, a prayer for peace. But in fact, its real meaning is perhaps even more profound than we might realize. The root for the word shalom, Sh-L-M , actually means wholeness or completeness. The Modern Hebrew word for to pay is lshalem, as we complete a transaction. If we are at war, or if we allow injustice in society, or if there is something threatening our well-being, then there is a breach of shalom - our world is broken. The more conceptual form of the same term is shleimut. Shleimut represents a sense of wholeness within ourselves, with our family members and friends, and a feeling of con- nectedness with the world, and ultimately with God. All of us aspire to a greater sense of wholeness in all these aspects. If the wholeness of our lives is broken in some way, we need to be healed; whether it is a physical sense if we are ill or injured; in an emotional sense, if we are sick at heart; or in a spiritual sense, if we feel discon- nected from others, and from the world.
Healing. . . . While the notion of healing has very deep roots in Jewish tradition, it is only relatively recently that it has taken on a modern idiom. Certainly our beloved songstress Debbie Friedman, zl, brought us one expression of healing through her setting of Mi Shebeirach, which has become enshrined in Reform liturgy, as it has in many other communities as well. But there are many additional layers to Jewish healing, and I sus- pect that all of us feel the need for such healing from time to time.
The High Holy Days. . . . We are entering the Season of Teshuvah - Repentance. And while the process of Teshuvah has very specific requirements in terms of our making rapprochement with people with whom there has been some breach in the shleimut of our relationship, it also is an introspective, private process, during which we aspire to repair our relationship with God, and our sense of connectedness to the world. And in- deed, ALL of us - no matter who we are, or what our circumstances - from time to time find ourselves in need of this sort of comfort and healing, whether in a literal or spiritual sense.
Service of Healing and Comfort. . . . During this coming Yom Kippur Afternoon, after our Social Action Fo- rum, in place of the usual readings from our machzor, we will use that time for something new - a Service of Healing and Comfort. It will consist of some readings that I have collated from the Center for Jewish Healing and various similar organizations, selected Psalms, some music from Lauren and Shinae, a bit of focusing and relaxation with the help of our congregant Dr. Gail Levine, and some badly needed quiet, personal time, as we take the break from the craziness of our world, just as Yom Kippur insists that we do. During that time as well, the Ark will remain open. The Cantor and I will be off the bimah, so that anyone who wishes to spend a few minutes by him/herself alone in private meditation in front of the open Ark will have the opportunity to do so. We hope that this will be a meaningful and helpful time for all of us.
In the meantime, as always, Stephen, Philip and I send to all of you our heartfelt wishes for a Shanah Tovah Uvriah Umtukah - a year of good health, sweetness, and much joy - to you and your loved ones. May this be a year of shalom - of wholeness, healing, and peace - for us, and for our world.
-Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman
Officers Column Temple Youth set for a NFTY Time 3 If you are not a teenager yourself or the parent of one you may have missed the return of the Union Tem- ple Youth Group. This past year, a dozen or so of our young people have been baking challah, wall- climbing at Brooklyn Boulder, marching in the Israel Day Parade and enjoying Shabbat dinners to- gether. Now, were blowing out the Youth Group into a full-fledged September to August program, un- der the leadership of David Marx, Religious School teacher, fluent He- brew speaker and grad student in education.
The year starts with a series of teens-only programs around the High Holy Days. While the adults are joining with other Brownstone Brooklyn synagogues in a joint Selichot program at Park Slope Jewish Center, the Youth Group has the Temple to itself for an intro- spective session on forgiveness. The next morning, the crew heads to Hebrew Union College for the Leadership Training Institute, a daylong gathering of leadership building, networking and fun. Af- ter the morning Rosh Hashanah ser- vice, on September 16th, the Youth Group will conduct its taschlich service in Prospect Park.
And what would a Youth Group be without NFTY outings? Well be joining with the venerable National Federation of Temple Youth for several events throughout the year, highlighted by weekends at Camps Kutz and Eisner.
Our indefatigable David Marx is also conducting extra sessions for our pre-Bar/Bat Mitzvah kids. Jewish Museum Tour Sunday, November 11
Join us on Sunday, November 11 on the bus for a day-trip to Philadelphia, where we will have a docent tour of the National Museum of American Jewish History. We will walk through the remarkable story of the American Jewish experience, and contemplate inestimable contribution we Jews have made to our national life as Americans.
The cost is $25 per person, not including lunch at the Museum. Call the office at (718) 636-7600 to reserve your spot.
This tour is made possible by a grant from our congregant Mi- chael Glikin, in memory of his mother Celia Glikin, z"l.
uniontemple@uniontemple.org UNION TEMPLE 17 EASTERN PARKWAY BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 11238 The enhanced Bar/Bat Mitzvah program features an event every month, with emphasis on Jewish learning and social action. Plans include deliver- ing aid to the elderly and the homeless, and partnering with organizations such as the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, and Dorot. If this sounds suspiciously like the Youth Group cur- riculum, thats intentional. To aid the transition into the teen group, the kids are invited to the NFTY Junior Youth Weekend at Camp Eisner in the spring.
The Youth Group parents this past year have been extraordinarily gener- ous with their time, effort and support, and it has paid off in a wonderful set of Jewish experiences for their teenagers. To join these families, or for more information about our youth programs, call the Temple office. Theres plenty of room.

It seems only yesterday that we were wishing you a happy summer, and suddenly September is here. Time to tuck away our memories of long, hot, lazy days and turn our thoughts to the cool, crisp days of autumn and our new year with its promise of fresh beginnings. Sisterhood hopes you had a pleasant summer and are rested and ready to join us in an exciting new season.
We'll be welcoming you back on Sunday, October 14, 2012, at 10 AM, with one of our popular Rosh Chodesh Seders. This one celebrates the beginning of the month of Cheshvan--a quiet month devoid of holidays, which gives us time to reflect on the hopes and dreams we surround ourselves with dur- ing the Holy Days of our new year. We'll explore those hopes and dreams and the way we can use them to enhance our lives. We'll also be discussing Deborah Feldman's eye-opening memoir, UNOR- THODOX: The Scandalous Rejection of my Hassi- dic Roots. Be sure to join us for this enlightening morning of sharing and caring, warmth, friendship, and fun--and, of course, lots of good things to eat!
Watch this space and your mail for more informa- tion about all our programs. Every one of them is guaranteed to delight and inspire you. We hope you'll be with us for them alland as a member. If you have not yet renewed your membership, please do so promptly, and if you are not yet a Sis- terhood member, we hope you will join us now. It's as simple as writing a check for $36 to Sister- hood of Union Temple. Think about itfor only double chai you can perform the mitzvah of bring- ing hope and help where they are needed by add- ing your voice, your heart, and your hands to ours, as together we reach out to perform tikkun olam.
Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy, healthy, and successful New Year. May 5773 be a year of peace in our hearts, our homes, and our world. L'Shanah Tovah!

-David Rapheal, Secretary The Union Temple Reli- gious School welcomes the new principal Dr. Andy Dubin. A na- tive of New York City, Andy is a fourth year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College -Jewish Institute of Religion, having stud- ied his first two years in Jerusalem. As a Junior at Amherst College in 1986, Andy traveled to Israel for the first time, spending seven months at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After college, he taught religious studies at two New England boarding schools (St. Pauls School and Northfield Mount Hermon), and then re- turned to New York to pursue a Masters Degree from Jewish Theological Seminary. While in New York, Andy taught religious studies and coached various sports in a number of local schools, such as Trinity, Dalton, and Solomon Schechter. He also spent four summers leading teen tours for NFTY through Israel, which led ultimately to his be- coming Director of College Edu- cation for the Reform Movement. Following his time at the UAHC, Andy moved with his growing family, first Phillips Exeter Acad- emy in Exeter, NH, for a one- year visiting position, then to Waltham, MA where he served as Dean of Students at a Jewish high school called Gann Academy: The New Jewish High School of Greater Boston, and finally to Greens- boro, NC, where he served as Dean of Students at the pluralistic Jewish boarding school, American Hebrew Academy. After a significant hiatus, Andy brought his JTS studies to a close in 2008, graduating with a Doc- torate from the Department of Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages. Having served last year as the Rabbinic Intern at Temple Beth HaS- holom in Williamsport, PA, where he was the sole Jewish professional presence, Andy is excited to be part of the Union team, working with Rabbi Goodman, the entire professional staff, and most especially, the students (of all ages) of this fabulous congregation (not to mention the fact that its just a subway ride away). Union Temple wishes Andy, his wife Nancy (a cantorial student also at HUC-JIR), and their four children (Shira, Liron, Noa, and Ari) a great year. Beginning after the Holidays, Dr. Dubin will begin an Anshei Mitzvah Class on Wednesday Evenings, for those adults who would like to learn to read Hebrew and work toward becom- ing B'nei and B'not Mitzvah. If you are interested, please contact Rabbi Goodman either by phone or E-mail (rabbigoodman@uniontemple.org) during September. Brotherhood Were Back 7
