Dates: Time: Venue: Presenters: CPD Credit: Format: Friday 18 May 2012 9:00am - 5:00pm Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre 1 Convention Centre Place, South Wharf Professor Martin Tyas AM, Dr Phillip Zoldan, Dr Eric Tan, Dr Kunal Pandya, Mr Marc Mifsud 6 Hours Scientific CPD Lecture Registration Limit: Unlimited

The general dentist is constantly bombarded by advertisements for a plethora of new aesthetic materials and techniques. This programme assembles a panel of experts to critically evaluate the science behind what is available in todays market and what is clinically successful for both direct and indirect aesthetic materials and techniques. On completion of the programme, each participant should be familiar with current aesthetic materials and techniques, their applications and their clinical performance.
An Update on All Ceramic Systems There are several all ceramic systems on the market. This lecture will aim to clarify the differences between the systems, their indications for use, and the types of restoration that are appropriate for the more popular commercially available systems. Specific clinical and laboratory handling issues with the different ceramics will also be addressed to provide maximum longevity for these restorations. Luting systems/cements Given the beautiful array of materials available that allow us to create natural aesthetic results, it is essential that we take advantage of these and know what is available to. Knowing when and how to apply these materials is part of the key to success. This talk will explore handling of ceramic materials, cementation protocols, which ceramics work best for masking discoloured abutments and mid-tooth finishing of restorations. Dentine Bonding Agents Bonding resin-based restorative materials to dentine has presented a clinical challenge for many years, in contrast to enamel bonding which is simple and reliable. This lecture will outline the development of dentine adhesives, from the original systems which were believed to bond chemically to dentinal calcium to the current systems which bond micromechanically to dentinal collagen. The significance of laboratory evaluation of dentine adhesives will be considered, and finally the clinical performance and the implications of clinical trials will be discussed. Glass-ionomer Cements Glass-ionomer cements have now been available since the late 1970s, and during this time have undergone various improvements as an understanding of their properties and clinical requirements have been gained. This lecture will describe the composition and setting reactions which are important for a clinical understanding of their use, followed by a review of their performance in various clinical situations. CAD/CAM There are many different CAD/CAM options available. The overview will include chairside impression taking (TRIOS and iTERO), chairside CAD/CAM (CEREC and E4D) as well as several lab-based systems (CEREC in LAB, 3Shape and industrial milling). Also discussed will be the ramifications of CAD/CAM on available materials and the current limitations of the existing technology. Resin Composites Directly placed intra-coronal resin composite restoration in the posterior segments have not always provided results that meet the patients or the clinicians expectations. This, of course, creates undesirable problems and stresses for the clinical team as well as reflecting poorly on the practice as a whole. This presentation will cover selecting appropriate materials for clinical situations, the various placement methods, matrix systems, factors affecting adequate curing, the management of pain and other problems that may have arisen, and some points regarding resin repairs. Substructures in implant dentistry A detailed description is not available at this time, one will be available shortly.
