This class focuses on the social and economic history of Post-Reconstruction America. The great wars that America was involved in during this period are deliberately overlooked, to be dealt with in the 20th Century world history block later this year. Instead, this class is about the evolving relationship between American individuals and American collectives; racial groups, trade unions, corporations, farmers collectives, genders, governments. We will ask: What role does the individual play in the American idea and how do the groups we belong to come to define us as individuals?
