INTRODUCTION

The excavator chosen for this contract is the CAT 365C. The near 5 LCY bucket capacity and the 404 horsepower rating were the main reasons for choosing this machine. It should perform very well in the clay and sandstone tasks on this project. The machine chosen to deal with the rock layer is the CAT D8R. This is the machine of choice to rip the sandstone at a rate which is acceptable to the client. Weighing in at roughly 12,000 pounds, more than one-third more than some of the D6 variants, it seems ideal for rapid ripping production in the rock layer and very suitable for the moving of material at the dumpsite. The trucks for this project are the dual 12 cubic-metre on-highway trucks that are readily available in the area. Maximum effort was requested from the client. Therefore the maximum number of trucks that could be loaded by the excavator per hour was leased from a fleet company.

JOB PRICE ESTIMATE:

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
50,000 bank cubic metres (30,000 CLAY, 20,000 ROCK) = (39,300 BCY CLAY, 26,200 BCY ROCK) Site area is 5m (16.5 ft.) deep, 40m (132 ft.) wide, 250m (825 ft.) long Ramp to be constructed in the hole (from rock layer) for D8 egress Dump site grading of dump site required during operations

EQUIPMENT (RENTALS)
1. Cat 365C (1) foundation excavation 2. Cat D8R (1) rip the rock layer and dump site grading 3. Highway Dump trucks fleet contract per day (12 trucks for clay, 7 for rock)

NOTES
1. Job site open 10 hours/day 2. Machine operators responsible for routine maintenance before day commences 3. Weight of material not factored into truck loads volume only 4. Rock assumed to be sandstone in uniform layer

5. Cat 365C bucket rated capacity = 5 LCY 6. Operational efficiency of Cat 365C is 50 minutes per hour 7. Truck heaped capacity = 25m3 (32LCY) = 26 BCY 8. Truck cycle time = 40 minutes 9. Productivity of the Cat D8R while ripping will be greater than the excavator and the trucks can handle. Therefore the D8 will rip the entire first layer then shut down until the layer is mostly removed. Then it will repeat the process until the required volume is ripped. 10. Truck rental per hour with operator = $100/hr. 11. Cat 365C rental per hour without operator = $/hr. Operator = $/hr. 12. Cat D8R rental without operator = $/hr. Operator = $/hr. 13. Transportation charges included with equipment rentals Covers site-to-dump and rental-yard-to-site transport 14. One ramp will be built out of material from rock layer Height = 5m, Width = 5m, Length = 15m

CALCULATIONS
1. Cat 365 productivity for clay = 392 BCY/hr.

= 392.3 BCY/hr.

2. Cat 365 productivity for rock = 160 BCY/hr. (Using a fill factor of 0.68, swell 67%, cycle time 38 seconds) 3. Number of Cat 365 cycles to load 1 dump truck with clay = 7.5 cycles = = = 7.5 cycles

Note: 4.25 LCY is obtained by multiplying the rated bucket cap. (5 LCY) by the fill factor for clay (0.85) 4. Number of Cat 365 cycles to load 1 dump truck with rock = 9.4 cycles = = 9.4 cycles

5. Truck loading time for clay = 3.25 min. = =

6. Truck loading time for rock =

= 5.95 min.

7. No. of trucks (clay) =

= 12 trucks

8. No. of trucks (rock) =

= 7 trucks

9. Productivity of 1 truck = 32.5 BCY/hr. = = = 32.5 BCY/hr.

10. Productivity of trucks (clay) = 390 BCY/hr.; (rock) = 228 BCY/hr. 11. Productivity of Cat D8 ripping = 877 BCY/hr. (Calculations from the Cat Performance Handbook): = 9.38 min./pass = 9.63 min./pass with 0.25 min. turn around

Operator efficiency @ 45 min./hr. = = 4.79 passes/hr. = 47.9 passes per 10 hr. day

Volume ripped =

= 183 BCY per pass

Production = 183 BCY x 4.79 = 877 BCY/hour = 8770 BCY/10hr. day 44 passes required to rip one complete layer = 8052 BCY per layer

12. 3.5 days required to haul away each rock layer 3.25 rock layers x 3.5 days/layer = 11.4 day task duration for rock haul

13. Trucks can haul away 3900 BCY (clay) and 2280 BCY (rocks) per day

14. CAT 365C Fuel $/hr.

= $46.25 (clay) = 37 l/hr. x $1.25/l = $51.25 (rock) = 41 l/hr. x $1.25/l

Clay usage is medium; rock usage is high (from CAT Perf. Handbook) = $57.50 (rip) = 46 l/hr. x $1.25/l = $45.00 (dumpsite) = 36 l/hr. x $1.25/l

15. CAT D8R Fuel $/hr.

Rip usage is high; dump usage is medium (from CAT Perf. Handbook)

16. CAT 365C service cost factor: clay 33% (average) = .33 x $46.25/hr. = $15.30/hr. rock 50% (unfavourable) = .50 x $51.25/hr. = $25.60/hr.

17. CAT D8R service cost factor: rip 50% (unfavourable) = .50 x $57.50/hr. = $28.75/hr. dumpsite 33% (average) = .33 x $45.00/hr. = $14.85/hr.
