PROMPTS FOR VISUAL JOURNAL

Each act of creation is a celebration of humanity. When filling out a prompt, write down the prompt you are responding to. SET 1 1. An info graphic depicting your information ecosystem 2. A video blog on "Why are you in Information Design?" (Bonus brownie points for playing with motion graphics and animation techniques) 3. A comic strip on (mis) communication 4. A photo essay or photo collage on Fleeting Moments 5. A motivational poster based on a quotable quote or lesson learned from an Ateneo professor 6. An avatar that best represents the inner you (as opposed to physically resembling you)

SET 2 For this week, just one prompt: Choose one cultural or artistic movement (i.e. Bauhaus, Art Nouveau) and discuss its underlying philosophy and how it is made manifest in terms of concrete art and design elements, themes, subject matter, or motifs. Use sample pieces from the period to illustrate your points. Put in another way: how is their philosophy (thought) visualized or concretized? And then: why did you choose that particular movement? SET 3 1. Create a visual response to the question of "What is the value of the work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction? May be an illustration, comic, design, video, or animation. 2. Illustrate the difference of a simulation vs simulacrum.

SET 4 Exercises in Design 1. Design a poster for an imaginary movie based on an actual music album 2. Design the covers for an imaginary album soundtrack based on an actual video game 3. Design the sleeves for an imaginary video game based on an actual novel 4. Design the cover for an imaginary novelization of an actual movie

SET 5 Thinking in Symbols 1. Using a random word generator, choose 25 words signifying abstract ideas or concepts (as opposed tangible objects, so: love and justice, as opposed to animal and pencil). Illustrate and visualize each of these 25 words in at least 5 different ways. BONUS: Create a video response to any of the prompts at www.themagisproject.tv (Full disclosure - this is a project I've been working on for a while now, so obviously it is in my self-interest that I'd like people to visit the site, submit material to it, and spread the word about it!)

SET 6 Develop Your Powers of Observation 1. Create a poster on haptics or body language. Frame it as a guide to something very specific "How to Tell You're A Hipster" or "How to Tell He/She Likes You Back." You may research online if you must. 2. Create a poster describing your own sense of fashion (include accessories and other items of habit) SET 7 The Maggie MacNab Way 1. Create an ambigram out of your name. 2. Find examples of local company logos that make use of the MacNab's principle of One, Two, Three, Four, and Five.

SET 8 On Campus 1. Create a timeline infographic of your stay in Ateneo so far, from the time you decided on your course until present day (Google timeline info graphics for samples!) 2. In honor of the mid-Autumn Gratia tradition on campus, as well as the upcoming elections, create a campaign poster nominating a professor for the honor of Greatest

Professor Ever! 3. Sketch or draw your favorite places on campus. 4. Sketch or draw your favorite people on campus. 5. Create a photo essay or comic strip about your first day on campus, or your most memorable moments from ORSEM.
