INTRODUCTION

This is the second volume in this series and His Son Jesus Christ aims i
t at reconciling the world to God. It is ideal for Sunday schools, Bible classes
and family Bible discussions.
When God created man He did not intend that he should be overwhelmed by
the sudden onrush of fear, anxiety and temptation. God is not moved by circumsta
nces and so His children ought not to be. He is PEACE!
This nature of God in His children is our focus in this volume of Bible
study. Peace of God is based on your peace with God, which we dealt with in volu
me one. You may not appreciate the in-depth revelation unveiled in this volume u
nless you have studied Vol. 1. I therefore recommend it to you.
A greater percentage of the world’s populace believe that peace means the
absence of wars or rumours of wars. That is why man is trying everything humanly
possible to eliminate crisis. I doubt whether this is possible. The peace we ar
e about to go into is not a psychological state of mind at all. In fact it trans
cends human understanding. It is the presence of Christ in the midst of crisis.
As long as Satan – the author of confusion is still in this world, thee must be cr
isis of different kinds.
The Bible enjoins Christians to cast all their cares upon Him because He
cares for them – I Peter 5:7. This simply means emptying yourself of all worries
and relaxing in His presence always. It is not your duty to think of solutions t
o the problems this world brings. It is His duty! He says – “ Come unto me, all ye t
hat labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you,
and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto
your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30.
Jesus did not promise us crisis free life in this world but His presence
. When you understand this fact, you will begin to enjoy an inward spiritual tra
nquility irrespective of what happens outwardly. That is when prayer swallows up
worries in victory.
Peace of God is the nutrient that sustains every believer in the face of
difficulties. It is there for you the very moment you accept Jesus as your Savi
our and Lord. But most unfortunately, today we are hearing of Christians sufferi
ng from anxiety related diseases. The aim of this study therefore is to eliminat
e the power of ignorance and cause you to lay hold on your inheritance as a chil
d of God. It is written – “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:” – Hosea 4:6.
It is the desire of God that nothing distracts your attention from Him. He desir
es your ceaseless fellowship. When your mind is troubled, you loose concentratio
n. God does not want that!
I therefore encourage you to go through this volume carefully and acquir
e volume three titled – “THE LOVE OF GOD”. Do not rush over its pages. Meditate on the
chapter captions, Bible references and your present relationship with God. Shar
e what you studied with your family members, friends and enemies (if you have an
y). By so dong you are helping some one.
If after studying, you have some questions that need my attention, pleas
e write to me using the publisher’s address and your questions will receive prompt
answers. It is a study that keeps you busy with your Bible so pray for more rev
elation before each chapter. May God bless your reading with deeper revelation.
LESSON ONE
RELAXING ALWAYS
EXODUS 14:13,14 – “ And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and se
e the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians
whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD s
hall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”
JONAH 1:4-6 – “ But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mig
hty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. Then the mariner
s were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that w
ere in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down int
o the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. So the shipmaster came
to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy G
od, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.”
MARK 4:36-40 – “ And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he
was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there aro
se a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now f
ull. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awa
ke him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose,
and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind cease
d, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how
is it that ye have no faith?”
You dare not talk about relaxation of the mind in this world without fir
st of all understanding and in fact having peace with God. This is the reason wh
y Vol. 1 centered on Peace with God.
You cannot maintain a relaxed life, family or business except you first
make peace with God by accepting His only begotten Son – Jesus Christ as your Lord
and Saviour. This is the bitter truth!
All through the Scripture, God strongly admonishes His children not to b
e afraid of any condition or circumstance of this life. A clear expression of Go
d’s thought concerning any condition His children might come across in this world
is seen in these words – “ But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, a
nd he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have cal
led thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I wil
l be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou
walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kind
le upon thee. For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I
gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.” – Isaiah 43:1-3.
Remember once again, Jesus did not promise us crisis-free life, rather H
e says, “--- be of good cheers, I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33.
Your approach to issues of this life determines whether you have the pea
ce of God or not. A child of God is expected to RELAX ALWAYS no matter the press
ure because of the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ in his/her life.
Do you panic at the slightest onset of the devil? The peace of God will
surely guard your heart after this study.

PEACE AMIDST TROUBLES

1. BE NOT AFRAID – EXODUS 14:13,14
“ And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation
of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have se
en to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The LORD shall fight for y
ou, and ye shall hold your peace.”
As a child of God, called out of the kingdom of darkness into His light,
the next step towards the realization of the peace of God in your life is to be
absolutely free from the torments of fear. Fear destroys your faith in God; it
reduces you to the lowest level and makes you a victim of circumstances. God exp
ects His children to be bold in the face of circumstances and rejoice in hope of
His deliverance.
Fear reduced the ten Israelite spies to grasshoppers. Numbers 13:26-33 – “ A
nd they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the
children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back w
ord unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the l
and. And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us,
and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. Neverth
eless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, an
d very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwe
ll in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorit
es, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coas
t of Jordan. And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up a
t once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that we
nt up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are st
ronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had se
arched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone
to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the peo
ple that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants,
the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as gras
shoppers, and so we were in their sight.”
Faith in God elevated the boy David and he slew the Philistine champion.
I Samuel 17:45-50 – “Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sw
ord, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the
LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day
will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine
head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines thi
s day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all t
he earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall kno
w that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD S, a
nd he will give you into our hands. And it came to pass, when the Philistine aro
se, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the
army to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence
a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone
sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevail
ed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine,
and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.”

In the midst of troubled sea, the Apostle Paul says – “ And now I exhort you
to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man s life among you, bu
t of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, an
d whom I serve, Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and,
lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Wherefore, sirs, be of go
od cheer: FOR I BELIEVE GOD, THAT IT SHALL BE EVEN AS IT WAS TOLD ME.” – Acts 27:22-
25 (Emphasis added).
2. CONFIDENCE IN GOD EXPRESSED – JONAH 1:4-6,8,9.
“ But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest
in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. Then the mariners were afra
id, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the
ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides
of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. So the shipmaster came to him, an
d said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so b
e that God will think upon us, that we perish not. Then said they unto him, Tell
us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupatio
n? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? And
he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which
hath made the sea and the dry land.”
Many Christians express with their lips how confident they are in God bu
t their response to pressures of this life denies it. Your confidence in God can
only be valued by your response to circumstances. How you handle issues of this
life matters a lot in your Christian race. Had any body asked you such question
as this before? “What meanest thou, O sleeper?” In such a troublous moment, you sti
ll have your sound sleep.
If today your enemies surround you with clubs, bows and arrows to take a
way your life as they did to me in 1996, what will be your reaction? Be sincere
now. Will you panic for fear or will you still be your normal self? Let us learn
a lesson from our Lord Jesus Christ - “And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefor
e art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. And, beh
old, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his swor
d, and struck a servant of the high priest s, and smote off his ear. Then said J
esus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the
sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my F
ather, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how
then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?---- And the high
priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these
witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered an
d said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou
be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: neverthele
ss I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right ha
nd of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” – Matthew 26: 50-54,62-64.
Read Acts 26:19-32 and note with interest the confidence of the Apostle
in God – “Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:
But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all th
e coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn t
o God, and do works meet for repentance. For these causes the Jews caught me in
the temple, and went about to kill me. Having therefore obtained help of God, I
continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other th
ings than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: That Christ sh
ould suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and
should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. And as he thus spake for
himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much lea
rning doth make thee mad. But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but spea
k forth the words of truth and soberness. For the king knoweth of these things,
before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things ar
e hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner. King Agrippa, believ
est thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. Then Agrippa said unto Paul,
Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. And Paul said, I would to God, that
not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altoge
ther such as I am, except these bonds. And when he had thus spoken, the king ros
e up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: And when they
were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing
worthy of death or of bonds. Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have
been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.”

3. THE PEACE OF GOD ON BOARD – MARK 4:36-40
“ And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the s
hip. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great st
orm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he w
as in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and s
ay unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked t
he wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there
was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that y
e have no faith?”
The worst thing that can happen to any body is going through this world
without the Prince of peace – Jesus Christ. His presence in you life is manifested
in your approach to the storms of this life. The storms of the whole world put
together do not disturb the Prince of peace and if He is on board with you then,
RELAX, and again I say, RELAX.
Moses know the danger of leading the Israelites through the wilderness w
ithout the presence of the Lord so when the Lord threatened to let them go alone
, Moses said – “If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up thence.” Exodus 33:15
Barak also requested for the presence of God through Prophetess Deborah
else he would not go for the battle against Sisera – “ And I will draw unto thee to
the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin s army, with his chariots and his
multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand. And Barak said unto her, If t
hou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I wil
l not go.”
Read II Kings 6:1-7 and write in your own words what would have happened
if the Prophet Elisha had not gone to Jordan with the sons of the prophet.
“ And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place whe
re we dwell with thee is too strait for us. Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan
, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we m
ay dwell. And he answered, Go ye. And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go
with thy servants. And he answered, I will go. So he went with them. And when th
ey came to Jordan, they cut down wood. But as one was felling a beam, the axe he
ad fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowe
d. And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he
cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim. Therefore said
he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The absence of wars and rumours of wars does not necessarily mean peace.
Peace is a state of the mind; the relaxation the mind enjoys irrespective of th
e pressures of this life. Again, read and meditate on Matthew 6:25-34 –
“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall ea
t, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not t
he life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air:
for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly
Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking
thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment?
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they
spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed
like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to
day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you,
O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or,
What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these
things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need
of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousnes
s; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for t
he morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficien
t unto the day is the evil thereof.”

LESSON TWO
NOT AS THE WORLD GIVES
JOHN 14:27,28 – “ Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world
giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afra
id. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye
loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father
is greater than I.”
PHILIPPIANS 4:6,7. – “ Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supp
lication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the pea
ce of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds thr
ough Christ Jesus.”

In this lesson, we will consider the source of relaxation of the mind, w

hich we studied in the previous chapter. The efforts of the whole world put toge
ther cannot and will never afford peace to the human mind. This is divine and co
mes as a result of the peace you enjoy with God.
The pleasures of the world and the supposed peace they offer are counter
feit. It does not endure the test of time. Take for instance one who desires to
forget his sorrows by drinking too much liquor. As soon as the influence of alco
hol vanishes, his sorrows surface again. The same thing applies to all pleasures
of this life. In fact, to an extent, they add sorrows upon sorrows.
The Bible describes Satan as “the god of this world” – II Corinthians 4:4. who
“as a roaring lion walketh about, seeking whom he may devour”. – I Peter 5:8. The que
stion therefore stands clear – how can Satan give peace to the world he intends to
devour? He has a three-fold ministry of stealing, killing and destroying – John 1
0:10. Every thing he does, no matter how good it may seem to be, aims at the ful
filling of his three-fold ministry. It may seem too good and peaceful, but the e
nd is destruction.
The peace of God we are studying in this volume cannot be analysed by th
e human mind. It flows from the very throne of God through the Holy Spirit as a
result of our cordial relationship with Jesus Christ – our Redeemer. It cannot be
valued. It cannot be hindered by circumstances of this life. It drives away sorr
ows and restores confide4nce in the mind of the believer.
Is there any way you have substituted the Peace of God with the pleasure
s of this world?

THE SETTLED MIND IN GOD

1. PERFECT PEACE – JOHN 14:27
“ Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give
I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
In this text, we see clearly the source of lasting, genuine peace. Jesus
knows that eventually men will seek for the relaxation of their minds from the
wrong source, either as a result of ignorance or of willful negligence of the pl
an of God for the salvation of mankind. Knowing that the world cannot afford it,
He reserved it as a precious treasure only to the believing-sinner.
Mark 5:25-34 records the story of the woman with an issue of blood. When
she encountered the Prince of peace, she went home with these words – “--- Daughter
, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.” – v 34.
What did Jesus say made the woman whole? The same earned her peace.
Also in the book of Luke 7:36-50 is recorded the story of another woman
described as “a sinner”. Definitely she had no peace but when she met with Jesus, sh
e smiled home with these – “--- Thy sins are forgiven. --- Thy faith hath saved thee
; go in peace.” Vv 48, 50. Again, what did Jesus say saved the sinner-woman? The s
ame earned her peace!
“ Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: becau
se he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH i
s everlasting strength:”
Write a commentary on these verses, taking into consideration, “thou wilt” a
nd “thou shalt”.

2. BE ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING – PHILIPPIANS 4:6,7

“ Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thank
sgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which pa
sseth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Anxiety and prayer are two forces that oppose each other in one’s Christia
n life. Anxiety destroys while prayer builds up your faith. The anxious mind is
always unsettled and receives nothing from God.
When a believer commits all his cares to God in prayer and worries about
them no more, he enjoys a steady inner tranquility. This is beyond human compre
hension because it manifests in full dimension the love and care of God.
During the second famine on earth in the days of Isaac, the Bible gives
us a picture of a man whose trust is in the Lord. Isaac did not panic like the m
en of the world rather he rested in the God of his father and prospered in the m
idst of famine. Read Genesis 26:1-6,12-16 with care-“ And there was a famine in th
e land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went
unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. And the LORD appeared unto hi
m, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee o
f: Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto
thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the
oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; And I will make thy seed to multipl
y as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and i
n thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham o
beyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. A
nd Isaac dwelt in Gerar:--- Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the
same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him. And the man waxed great, and
went forward, and grew until he became very great: For he had possession of flo
cks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines e
nvied him. For all the wells which his father s servants had digged in the days
of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with ea
rth.”
When you cast all your cares upon Him – I Peter 5:7, He will do exceedingl
y abundantly above all that you ask or think, according to the power that works
in you. His power in you!
Write a brief commentary of Ephesians 3:20 – “ Now unto him that is able to
do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power t
hat worketh in us,”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
It sounds impossible hearing that the human mind can be settle, free fro
m worries of this life. Remember, “all things are possible to him that believeth.” – M
ark 9:23.
Remember also that “ this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if
we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he he
ar us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of
him.” – I John 5:14,15. So, we can by this confidence live a life void of worries de
spite all odds.

LESSON THREE
LIVE IN THE SPIRIT
JOHN 14:15-17 – “ If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, a
nd he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Eve
n the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not,
neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in
you.”
ROMANS 8:5-9 – “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; b
ut they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally m
inded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carn
al mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither
indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are
not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in y
ou. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
The worst thing that had ever happened to the devil is the ever presence
of the Holy Spirit abiding with the believer. On the other hand, it is the best
thing that can happen to the Christian because it guarantees steady flow of God’s
love, joy and peace.
Without the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian, life
on this earth is meaningless. The devil desires to see the Christian always fru
strated, discouraged and sorrowful. But with the presence of the Comforter, the
Christian ignores the effects of the attack of Satan. This is possible because o
f the assurance of the glory of Christ revealed to the church by the Holy Spirit
. The Apostle Paul says – “ For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time ar
e not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” – Romans
8:18. Also in I Corinthians 2:9,10 it is written, “ Eye hath not seen, nor ear he
ard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepa
red for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: fo
r the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” Take note of the
phrase – “BUT GOD HATH REVEALED THEM UNTO US BY HIS SPIRIT.” It is this revelation tha
t guards the believer’s heart in times of trouble.
Peace is the fruit of the Spirit manifesting in the life of a Spirit-fil
led Christian. This peace is love-reposed, stability in crises. The peace that u
nderstands why Romans 8:28 is part of the Bible. It enables the believer to appr
eciate God and other people despite the pressures of this life.
Life in the Spirit is a Spirit-controlled life, which always resist the
flesh. It focuses on God and cares for nothing other than the will of God. It re
sts in the love of God.
To be led by the Spirit is to be no longer subject to the law and dictat
es of the flesh, which aggravates sorrow. The question therefore is – “Have ye recei
ved the Holy Ghost since ye believed?” – Acts 19:2. If not, desire and ask the Lord
Jesus to baptize you with His Spirit.

PEACE THROUGH HIS SPIRIT

1. OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S WORD – JOHN 14:15

“ If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
The doing of God’s word is a necessary prerequisite for the indwelling of
the Holy Spirit. For us to live a Spirit-controlled life, we must be prepared to
obey the Word of God unconditionally. As we trust and obey Him, His Spirit will
bear fruit – PACE – in us.
Abraham’s faith in God earned him righteousness. A righteous man of course
enjoys the peace of God. “And he believed in the LORD: and he counted it to him f
or righteousness.” – Genesis 15:6.
In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus likened the man who obeys His word to a wise b
uilder who builds on the sand is a replica of one who ignores the word of God. N
ote that the rain, the floods and the winds descended on both but the difference
was clear. “ Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I
will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain
descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; a
nd it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these
sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which
built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and
the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall o
f it.”
Write a brief harmonious commentary of John 15:10,11 and Ecclesiastes 12
:13 –
“ If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have ke
pt my Father s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken u
nto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” – John 1
5:10,11
“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his co
mmandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” – Ecclesiastes 12:13

2. THE PROMISED COMFORTER – JOHN 14:16-1
“ And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may
abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receiv
e, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelle
th with you, and shall be in you.”
The presence of the Comforter in the life of a believer makes it impossi
ble for sorrow to dominate the heart. The Holy Spirit comforts, counsels and enc
ourages the believer in the face of troubles.
Despite the persecutions that came upon the early church, the Holy Spiri
t gave them comfort. The Scripture says – “ Then had the churches rest throughout al
l Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of t
he Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.” – Acts 9:31. In tim
es of trouble the Holy Spirit gives you rest and comfort.
The Apostle Paul prays thus - “ Now the God of hope fill you with all joy
and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Ho
ly Ghost.” – Romans 15:13

3. TO BE SPIRITUALLY MINDED – PEACE – ROMANS 8:5-9
“ For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that
are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is dea
th; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is e
nmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can b
e. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the
flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if a
ny man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
The whole world lay in wickedness. Any attempt to depend on the supplies
of the world attracts serious heartache and sorrow upon sorrow. To be free from
the cares of this world, the Christian must wholeheartedly mind the things of t
he Spirit according to the measure of His grace.
Jesus taught a simple lesson on how to avoid heartache and sorrows of th
e heart when He said - “ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where mo
th and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up
for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, an
d where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
The Apostle John says that this whole world lay in wickedness – I John 5:1
9 so, bearing this in mind, write a commentary on I Corinthians 2:12-14. Remembe
r, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
“ Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which
is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.Whic
h things also we speak, not in the words which man s wisdom teacheth, but which
the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natu
ral man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness
unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” - I C
orinthians 2:12-14.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The Christian is bought with the blood of Jesus and is therefore the tem
ple of the Holy Ghost – I Corinthians 6:19,20 – “ What? know ye not that your body is
the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are n
ot your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body,
and in your spirit, which are God s.” So, “let the peace of God rule in your hearts
, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” – Colossians 3:1
5.
WHY SHOULD THE PEACE OF GOD NOT RULE IN YOUR HEART? Keep the answer to y
our self!

LESSON FOUR
BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

ACTS 19:1-7 – “ And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having
passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they
said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And
he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John s
baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, sa
ying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after hi
m, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the nam
e of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost
came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were
about twelve.”
ACTS 4:7-10,13 – “ And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what powe
r, or by what name, have ye done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, s
aid unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be
examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made who
le; Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name
of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, e
ven by him doth this man stand here before you whole.--- Now when they saw the b
oldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant m
en, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jes
us.”

In lesson three we discovered the importance of the presence of the Holy

Spirit in the life of a believer. We also discovered that PEACE is the fruit of
the Holy Spirit manifesting in the believer’s life. In this lesson, we will consi
der the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
The Christian is in the world but not of the world’s system therefore, for
a believer to go through this world successfully, he needs the comfort of the H
oly Spirit. This is what sustains a genuine Christian in this sin-sick world.
Our Lord Jesus knows what it takes to live a comfortable Christian life
here on earth hence He says – “I will not leave you comfortless.” – John 14:18. He promi
sed to come back again but before then, He promised to send the Holy Spirit to t
hose who love Him and keep His commandments. In other words, those who accepted
Jesus as their Lord and Saviour will be sustained in this wicked world by the po
wer of God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. That is why it is importan
t for every believer to have the Holy Spirit abiding with and in him.
The principle is very simple. You must love the Lord Jesus so as to keep
His commandments. Or, the keeping of His commandments demonstrates your love an
d obedience to Him. Then, the Holy Spirit is yours by asking. However, He does n
ot fall upon you anyhow; you have to desire Him earnestly and ask God to fill yo
u with His Spirit. Jesus says – “ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gif
ts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Sp
irit to them that ask him?” Luke 11:13.
The believer possesses the divine nature of god as a result of the indwe
lling Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit of God that helps you to be like Jesus. Read
II Peter 1:1-9 and list the eight divine natures of God contained therein. “ Simo
n Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained li
ke precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus
Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, a
nd of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all thing
s that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath c
alled us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and pre
cious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having
escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, givi
ng all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to know
ledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to
godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these th
ings be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor un
fruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these th
ings is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged fr
om his old sins.”

BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. UNAVOIDABLE EVIDENCE – ACTS 19:2,6.

“ He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they s
aid unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.--- A
nd when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they
spake with tongues, and prophesied.” Read from verses 1-7.
Like every other inward work of grace, the initial physical evidence or
demonstration of the spirit through a believer is usually speaking in an unknown
tongue and prophesying. This unusual charisma coupled with new zeal makes the w
orld to wonder at the believer. The Holy Spirit uses the members of the believer’s
body to manifest God’s attributes.
Read Acts 2:1-4 and 10:44-48 and point out common evidence, which showed
that the people concerned had been filled with the Holy Ghost.
“ And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one acc
ord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mi
ghty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appear
ed unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And t
hey were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues,
as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
“ While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which
heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as
many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the g
ift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.
Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized
, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be
baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------
The Apostle Paul says – “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye a
ll:” – I Corinthians 14:18. What do you understand by that? Does it agree with your
evidence of being filled with the Holy Ghost? Or are you still denying such clea
r evidence? It is my prayer that you will get your theology right.
2. UNUSUAL BOLDNESS – ACTS 4:7-10, 31
“ And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what n
ame, have ye done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them,
Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, If we this day be examined of the
good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; Be it known
unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ
of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth
this man stand here before you whole.--- And when they had prayed, the place wa
s shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the H
oly Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.”
God does not expect the fire of His Spirit to be quenched in the life of
His children. He releases the anointing peculiar to the circumstances before us
at any given period. Rededication and renewal of the anointing of God upon a be
liever’s life is necessary hence there are opportunities to be constantly filled w
ith the oil of the Spirit. The result of this is an unusual boldness to proclaim
the gospel of the Lord with power, signs and wonders.
The book of the Acts of the Apostles is also known as Acts of the Holy S
pirit because it recorded the manifestations of the Holy Spirit through the disc
iples.
The Apostle Peter held his first city-wide crusade and spoke with such u
nusual boldness immediately the Holy Spirit came on him – read the account in Acts
2:14-36. As a result therefore, about 3,000 souls were added to the church.
Stephen was chosen, as one of the deacons because he was “a man full of fa
ith and of the Holy Ghost” – Acts 6:5. He exhibited an unusual boldness as he was ad
dressing the elders of Israel in Acts chapter 7. Read it through. In Acts 6:10,
the Bible says – “And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit which h
e (Stephen) spake.”
What would have turned an anti-church crusader into a church planter if
not the power of the Holy Ghost? Saul of Tarsus was born again as he encountered
Christ and was filled with the Holy Ghost in Damascus and thee and then began t
o declare that Jesus is the Son of God. “ And Ananias went his way, and entered in
to the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Je
sus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou
mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And immediately t
here fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith,
and arose, and was baptized. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened.
Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. And strai
ghtway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.”
Have you noticed such an unprecedented boldness in your life since you b
elieved? Explain in your own words the above text pointing out the role of the H
oly Ghost in the taking off of Paul’s ministry in Damascus.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The manifestation of the Holy Spirit cannot be avoided or ignored by any

serious minded Christian. He is the believer’s strength. Jesus and all the Apostl
es manifested the initial evidence of speaking in an unknown tongue. You do not
need to understand it. It is a divine utterance given by the Spirit Himself. It
is for you and your children and all that God shall call. There is no time limit
. The gift of the Holy Ghost is for all generations. “ Now when they heard this, t
hey were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apos
tles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and
be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of s
ins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto yo
u, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord
our God shall call.” – Acts 2:37-39.

CONCLUSION

Having come to the end of this study, I strongly believe that your visio
n of “self” has changed for peace. It is not magic; it is the spiritual likeness of
God, which is just restored to you by the power of the Holy Spirit.
However, if by now you still feel guilty of your sins, it means you have
not accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. So pray this prayer by faith.
Dear Father, thank you for sending your Son Jesus Christ to die in my stead on t
he cross of Calvary. I believe His blood atoned for me. Thank you for forgiving
me all my sins. I surrender my life to you from today onwards. In Jesus’ name I ha
ve prayed. Amen!
That is all you need. Believe it and begin to walk in the newness of lif
e, which is given to you by Jesus.
The Bible says – “ Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with Go
d through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this
grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” – Romans 5:1,2.
