SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description CV Joint Puller Tool Number 205-241 (T86P-3514-A)

Impact Slide Hammer 100-001 (T50T-100-A)

Removal 1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. 2. Disconnect the positive cable from the battery. 3. Remove the battery cover, hold-down, and battery. 4. Unclip the constant control relay module and position it aside. Remove the battery tray bolts, pull the tray away from the air cleaner housing, and remove the tray. 5. Disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connectors. Disconnect the crankcase vent tubes from the air cleaner assembly. Loosen the hose clamp at the throttle body, disconnect the clips, and remove the air cleaner lid. 6. Disconnect the 10-pin harness connector. Remove the bolt retaining the harness bracket (located at the top of the transaxle). Position the bracket aside. Disconnect the 42-pin connector and the Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector. 7. Disconnect the harness locator. Remove the nut retaining the battery cable harness locator (located at the coolant housing beneath the upper radiator hose). 8. Install the left front lifting bracket 014-00797-1 to the cylinder head, near the front cover. Install the top two bolts to the head finger-tight, then install the third bolt. Securely tighten all three bolts. 9. Disconnect the washer fluid hose and hood support rods from the hood. Install a suitable hood support. 10. Remove the wiper motor assembly caps. 11. Remove the plastic screws and the clips retaining the cowl vent screens to the inner panels. Remove the upper cowls. 12. Remove the nuts retaining the vacuum valve block to the lower cowl support and position it aside. 13. Remove the wiper motor connector and grommet from the cowl top extension. 14. Remove the screws retaining the lower cowl supports to the bulkhead. Remove the lower cowls and the drain tube.

15. Remove the transaxle fluid level indicator and the nut retaining the manual control lever to the TR sensor. Disconnect the cable from the bracket and position it aside. 16. Install the right rear lifting bracket 014-00797-2 to the cylinder head. Finger-tighten the bolts. 17. Raise the vehicle. 18. Securely tighten the rear lifting bracket bolts. 19. Remove the retaining screws from the air deflector and remove the deflector. 20. Lower the vehicle. 21. Remove the front wheel assemblies. 22. Remove the wiring harness from the routing clip on the front struts. Remove the suspension height sensors from the sensor ball studs and secure the sensors aside. 23. Remove the left and right upper sway bar link retaining nuts from the strut. 24. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from the tie rod ends. Using tool T85M-3395-A, separate the tie rod ends from the front wheel knuckles. 25. Remove the nut retaining the air pump tube to the rear support insulator bracket. Remove the rear transaxle support insulator nut. 26. Lower the vehicle. 27. Remove the top three transaxle-to-engine bolts. 28. Install Three Bar Engine Support D88L-6000-A and suitably support the engine assembly. 29. Raise the vehicle. 30. Disconnect the HO2S connectors and locators from the front and rear of the subframe. Remove the nuts retaining the dual converter Y-pipe to the exhaust manifolds.

31.

CAUTION: Take care not to damage the heat shield on the transaxle while removing the exhaust system from the rear manifold studs. Remove the bolts, nuts, and gasket from the converter outlet and resonator inlet flange. Loosen the nut at the slotted bracket for the exhaust hanger (located at the front of the transaxle). Remove the exhaust bracket bolt and the converter assembly. Remove the clip nut for the exhaust bracket retaining bolt.

32. Position a drain pan. 33. Remove the transaxle pan bolts, lower the pan, and drain the fluid. Install the transaxle pan and retaining bolts. 34. Remove the drain pan.

35. Remove the nuts attaching the steering gear to the front subframe. 36. Remove the bolts attaching the power steering line retainers to the subframe. 37. Remove the nuts retaining the lower ball joints. Using tool T64P-3590-F, separate the ball joints from the lower control arms. 38. Remove the plastic screws from the transmission housing cover and remove the cover. 39. NOTE: The four pushpins near the crankshaft pulley must be removed to gain access to the pulley. Rotate the torque converter, using the crankshaft pulley, and remove the converter-to-flexplate nuts. Discard the nuts. 40. Using mechanics wire (or equivalent), secure the outer tie rods to the brake hose brackets. 41. Remove the nuts retaining the front engine support insulators to the front subframe. 42. Position the powertrain lift under the vehicle with Rotunda Engine Cradle Adapter 014-00766 and raise it to the subframe. 43. Remove the subframe retaining bolts. Carefully lower the subframe approximately one inch and push up on the steering gear, to separate it from the subframe. Remove the coolant hose locator from the front of the subframe. 44. Remove the air pump bracket assembly retaining nuts, bolt, and pushpin. Disconnect the hose from the metal tube and the electrical connectors from the pump. Remove the bolt retaining the power steering line to the front subframe. 45. Continue lowering the subframe and remove the assembly from under the vehicle. 46. Install extension T86P-3514-A2 into CV Joint Puller T86P-3514-A1. Install Impact Slide Hammer D79P-100-A into the extension. Carefully remove the halfshafts from the transaxle. (A prybar may be necessary to remove the left halfshaft.) Support the halfshafts with mechanics wire to an underbody access hole. 47. Remove the starter wires, ground cable nut, and cable. Remove the starter bolts and starter motor. 48. Disconn ect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor connector and the pushpin retaining the harness to the transaxle fluid tube. 49. Remove the three bolts retaining the transaxle-to-engine bracket, located at the front of the engine. 50. Remove the retaining clips, disconnect the transaxle cooling lines at the quick-disconnect, and position them aside. Place protective caps over the open lines and fittings. 51. Position the transmission jack under the vehicle and raise it to a secure position.

52. Remove the five remaining transaxle bolts, separate the transaxle from the engine, and carefully lower the transaxle from the vehicle.
